This is the fifth book in the series but can be read as a stand-alone. Shivon tries to start a rebellion and she is sent to Torak. They may be fated mates but Shivon does her best to fight it. Steamy read with loads of drama and suspense. The characters are great and the story is fast-paced and draws you in, a great sci fi read. I really liked it.

When I first grabbed this book, I was hoping that it wouldn't be all about sex with an alien. That it actually had a good story being played out. Well of course it eventually does have the sex but there is the required resistance on Shivon's part first. But that was well done, she really did have reasons to trust no one. She trust herself and that's it. No man was going to turn her into a "Suzie Homemaker". She had so much more to offer and she wasn't sitting down and shutting up about it either. She goes toe to toe with Kage, the Overlord first and that rebellion gets her sent to Torak on the Relentless. Of course, Kage also has another motive as well, that does get revealed fairly early on. Well it does get revealed to Torak at least. It's pretty well known among the ranks that even as tough as Kage is, he is also well known for his matchmaking ways. And he's pretty good at it.
I liked both Torak and Shivon, they were both strong characters. Torak grew on me as more of his true motives came into view.
Kage, now there was someone I didn't know what to make of at first. He just seemed like an arrogant, over-bearing kind of guy. But wait there is more to him. And we get to see even more when he meets up with a high ranking
Sarronti woman named, Ezalondra (Eza). Their story will continue in the next book, "Overlord". Which is one that sounds interesting to me too.
There is some MAJOR twists towards the end of the book that just keep the story going. There is also a battle that goes on that brings some victories but not a total one. There is still hope for negotiations between the two races but it isn't a done deal.
So there is a H.E.A. for now for Torak and Shivon. Their relationship is more secure but the dangers have not all been eliminated yet when it comes to their daily lives.

WARLORD is the fifth instalment in Cyndi Friberg’s OUTCAST sci-fi, fantasy romance series. This is human female Shivon Roxtin, and Warlord Torak Payne’s story line. WARLORD can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion.

SOME BACKGROUND: The humanoid aliens known as Rodytes needed a home and settled on two planets they believed were uninhabited. Without any available mates, the male only Rodytes sent teams of Outcasts to kidnap any and all human females in an attempt to repopulate and find mates for their struggling males but procreation came at a price including the need for genetically matched DNA, a mutual metamorphosis, and magical intervention. A test for compatibility is filed and there may be as many as five males matched to a single female DNA. Outcasts were battle born; their mothers were Bilarrian prisoners forced to breed, with their Rodyte captors, in the hopes of restoring magic to the Rodyte people. To complicate matters, the planet they now inhabit hides a secret deep beneath the planet’s surface, a secret that is determined to take back what once belonged.

Told from several third person perspectives including Shivon and Torak WARLORD follows the building relationship between fated mates human female Shivon Roxtin, and Warlord Torak Payne. Shivon Roxtin found herself part of a group of rebels struggling with their place on the planet OP3- a group of unmated females who have yet to be matched with a compatible member of the Rodyte male population. Hearing that many of the females would rather return to their home planet of Earth, Overlord Kage Razel places Shivon in a position that will bring her face to face with her fated male. Enter Warlord Torak Payne, the man with whom Shivon will fall in love. What ensues is the building relationship between Shivon and Torak, and the potential fall-out when Shivon ‘volunteers’ to work along side her future mate in an effort to ferret out information from the enemy below.

Shivon Roxtin is a warrior at heart; a former interrogator with the US military who is struggling with the lack of positions for females on the planet she is about to call home. Torak Payne knows Shivon Roxtin is his fated mate but convincing Shivon to place her trust in Torak is met with trepidation and the possibility that working together threatens Torak’s need to protect the woman with whom he will fall in love.

Meanwhile Ezalondra ‘Eza’ Alonov, a Council member of the underground Sarronti, will come to the surface in an effort to align with the invaders known as the Outcasts. Meeting Kage Razel sparks something deep within Eza Alonov, something worth risking her own life in return for that of her imprisoned nephew Farlo.

The relationship between Torak and Shivon is one of fated mates; a genetic match based upon DNA but a match that Shivon struggles to accept based on past experience, and a lifetime of hardship and rejection. Hoping to prove Shivon is worthy to be his mate, Torak begins a slow seduction of the woman he loves. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Torrin and his mate Arrista, Arrista’s sister Merella, mistress Lady Isolaund, and Farlo Alonov.

The world building continues to focus on the search for mates; the political structure of the Sarronti Underground; and the preparations for battle with the enemy below.

WARLORD is a story of conflict and authority; struggle and acceptance; trust, honor, respect and love. The premise is intriguing and engaging; the romance is seductive and energetic; the characters spirited and strong. WARLORD is a wonderful, fast paced and captivating entry into Cyndi Friberg’s OUTCAST series.

Warlord
by Cindi Freiburg

Warlord is the first book in the new series of “Outcasts”. Shivon Roxtin is not the type of female that just sits back and let things happen. Nope, as one out of the three thousand females taken from Earth, she wants something to do. And being Susie homemaker is not what she has in mind. When on Earth she was in a Rangers unit of the military, and she wants to serve in that capacity again. OverLord Kage feed up with her antics of rilling up the other women, so she was given an ultimatum of meeting her first match and train for fighting or sit in detention.

Warlord Torak Payne, was tasked with either training or claiming the little rebel Shivon. After the first look he decided claiming it would be. But he’s in for a big surprise on how stubborn she can be. Torak is one who loves a challenge, but is this the time to take one on with the impending war with the Sarronti who are underground inhabitants.

No matter human or alien a male is a male. That’s the way Shivon views Torak and the others. Read for yourself on how she handles him, or is it how he handles her! I enjoyed the interactions between these two characters. This will definitely be a series to add to my collection.

When far from home, one of the most important things to remember: not everything will be the same. But independence is hard earned and Shivon is not willing to give up that freedom. Can her intelligence and strength be used to further the Outcast goals? Will her genetic match be gentle enough to calm her warrior spirit without losing any of the fierceness? Will the Warlord gain her loyalty and love?

My first book by this author and yes it's part of a series that's new to me but I was pretty hopeful that it would work as a standalone. So we have aliens that are pretty humanoid looking known as Outcasts who are attempting to colonise what they thought was an uninhabited planet . Alas they were wrong and it's inhabitants the Sarronti live underground so as this story begins already there have been skirmishes. The Outcasts have humans amongst them and one of them is Shivon who has absolutely no wish to be a brood mare and so is desperate to prove that she can be far more usefully employed if only the over protective Outcasts would realise that human women are not fragile . Well enter genetic testing that matches her up with five possible Mates and its decided that she should spend time with Warlord Torak. Their attraction is mutual but for Shivon the trust just isn't there. Can Torak tame this rebellious woman enough to make her accept him as her Mate ?
If I'm blunt I wasn't exactly wowed by the first half of this as there was for me just too much domination and sex scenes going on and I actually wanted more plot. So I'm happy to say that the second half of this story really opened up the world building in play here. The Sarronti are Elves with magical abilities and its clear there is dissension amongst them as regards not only to the Outcasts but also their own out dated way of life. Add in political machinations and finally scenes with Shivon being more than just a sexual plaything and I really enjoyed this story and will happily read more by this author.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

This is an excellent read. Shiron is a human and former military. She's determined, strong and intelligent. Total is an Outcast who is her genetic match. To say sparks fly when they meet is an understatement. The triaals.and tribulations they go to before their happy ending was great reading. Such a cute ending.
