Description

A lighthearted story about the consequences of rash decisions and the importance of problem solving, responsibility, and acceptance for kids ages 4-8.

Told in rhyming couplets, The Barefoot King recounts the story of a young king named Creet who rules a land where people walk around with bare feet. Easily distracted, one day King Creet stubs his toe on a rock and is shocked by the pain. Never wanting to experience that discomfort again, the king decides to cover his whole kingdom in leather, with unfortunate consequences.

This short and playful story helps parents discuss concepts of acceptance, awareness, and responsibility with kids. Seeing the consequences of King Creet's decision, kids will learn to navigate challenges in their own lives and the opportunities for growth that obstacles provide. A short "reader's guide" accompanies the story, aiding parents and teachers in discussions of how to handle life's bumps with conscious breaths and mindful steps.

I absolutely love how this book's format is rhyming. Especially for the reader's target age. Rhyming makes this book easier for kids to read, which is fantastic! I love how this book teaches children lessons they can actually use: problem solving, mindfulness, acceptance, and responsibility!

The Barefoot King is a fun fable that tells about the invention of shoes. I loved how the King came up with the idea to cover everything with leather after he badly stubbed his toe. It is there that the kingdom comes to realize that the King's well-intended solution actually has ended up leading to a series of even more complicated problems! Through trial and error, the King and his trusty advisors end up coming up with the amazing solution of shoes!

With clever rhymes, Andrew Jordan Nance tells the story of King Creet, a king suddenly desperate to create a solution for himself and his barefooted people upon hurting his toe. Unfortunately, his impulsivity leads to more inconveniences in his land. People are disappointed with their king. Finally, King Creet seeks counsel from his wise minister, opening himself to problem solve in a way that could benefit others and not only himself. You’ll enjoy seeing what invention was birthed from this one king’s trouble.

“The Barefoot King” is a good talking point in helping children see the value of others’ wisdom and ingenuity over our own rash, fear-based decisions. I’d imagine children ages 4-8 will enjoy this light-hearted tale.

A cute story that encourages kids to not overreact. My kids loved the prose and thought the king extremely silly. The illustrations were so fun and fresh.
