Description

This board book version of David Bowie – from the critically acclaimed, multimillion-copy bestselling Little People, BIG DREAMS series – introduces the youngest dreamers to the incredible life of this starman who dazzled audiences with his music.

As a child, young David lived with his family in a tiny house on an ordinary street, but he had a head full of songs and ideas. At school he was loved music and dance, and he was inspired by his brother's rock and jazz records to pick up the saxophone and start writing his own songs.

After earning his stripes in some of the coolest bands in London, David splashed onto the solo scene. David knew that to be a star, he had to combine great songs with great performace, and so from this point on he took on a range of shapeshifting personas, from Ziggy Stardust to the Thin White Duke, but really, he was just being himself, expressing his art on the stage.

His songwriting talent and musical skill made him one of rock and roll's all-time greatest artists. Babies and toddlers will love to snuggle as you read to them the engaging story of this fascinating star, and will also enjoy exploring the stylish and quirky illustrations of this sturdy board book on their own.

Little People, BIG DREAMS is a best-selling biography series for kids that explores the lives of outstanding people, from designers and artists to scientists and activists. All of them achieved incredible things, yet each began life as a child with a dream.

This empowering series of books offers inspiring messages to children of all ages, in a range of formats. I work in a school, and my class name is 'Bowie' named after the starman himself, so when I saw this available I jumped at the chance to request it. NetGalley were kind enough to provide me with a copy for an honest review.

What a brilliant idea! This is an inspiring series of books; a perfect way to introduce iconic figures in history in a completely accessible way for children.
The story of David Bowie is told concisely with beautiful illustrations to match and is a delight to read. Bowie is an inspiration in the way that he didn't fit any particular box, and didn't try to. Instead choosing to be himself completely, without thought. It's a wonderful message for children to be who they want to be and who they are inherently without worrying about what the world might think.

The "Little People Big Dreams" collection is one that, in general, can be counted on. The board book version of David Bowie is meant for toddlers to be read aloud to. As usual, the illustrations are meticulous and colorful, making the reading experience fun. I do feel like in this book, some of the texts feel rushed and could have used some more thought, and the story seems to end rather abruptly. I also feel like this one just tells the David Bowie's life story without some underlying lesson or inspiring message like I was used to from the other books. Overall a nice childrens book, but there are some better ones in the series.

Another great addition to this series. Once again the illustrations are just so lovely (particularly liked the ones that showed his real onstage costumes) and the language is great for kids being introduced to Bowie. Only scratches the surface of such a maverick but then again, quite a lot about his life is probably not suitable for kids.

David Bowie is not a name I you would have thought of to add to this Little People, Big Dreams series. Having read it now, and comparing it with some of these books already reviewed, this iconic Rock superstar deserves his story to be shared. My initial reluctance to absorb his hype is perhaps due to him being part of my growing up and introduction into learning my own musical appreciation.
Bowie's ordinariness is the first aspect of his life that grabs your attention. Thereafter, it is his drive, his desire to be the complete performer in terms of music, design and personality. At a time when everyone was emerging from familiar musical roots; he made deliberate changes to his sound and image.
The key to the success of these books are the lack of words; potted facts are shared and gloriously enhanced by simple but detailed illustrations. The words shared are well chosen, as they build a clear picture and promote an intimacy with each subject.
Bowie's music came to be played when the first moon landing happened and his lyrics have fashioned cult TV detective shows in the U.K. He deserves this short biography and hopefully it will enable family conversations around pop culture and find Bowie's unique sound.

David Bowie by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara is another lovely addition to the Little People BIG DREAMS series, a collection that continues to charm and delight. This time, the focus is on the incomparable musician, David Bowie, and the contributions he made to the arts during an impressive and ever-evolving career. I did find the text a little light compared to previous books, but very much enjoyed the illustrations which are never short of detail, and are always full of joy and light.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Childrens for the opportunity to read an ARC of this title.

Charming, colorful, and a very brief once-over of the great man for the sake of the kiddies. I imagine that Vegara earned her pay by figuring out what to include and what to excise. If you’re a fan of the singer and want to introduce young children, this is a great way to do it.

Obviously there’s great fun in reading this as an adult, too.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for the advance read.

Fun book for children about David Bowie! I loved the colorful illustrations and the author does a great job of succinctly summarizing David Bowie's life and impact. That being said, the text was a little stilted and choppy. I think parents who are Bowie fans will enjoy reading this one to their kids! This book is best for very young readers, age 2-3.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this ARC.

This short book full of lovely illustrations around David Bowies life made me very happy. It is a cute way to introduce basically anyone regardless of age to the sensation that Bowie was.

I have really enjoyed these board books that give a mini biography about famous people through out history. I have always been a fan of David Bowie and I liked how they went through his childhood all the way up to him choosing to be himself.

The artwork is great, and my daughter likes having something different to read about someone whose music she has heard and liked. :-) Nicely done!

A beautiful, collectible children’s book that is charming in its vintage style. I loved being able to share this with my son. The colours and images are captivating and the insight into Bowie as an icon is very special. In a world where there is so much pressure on today’s youth to fit in, its great to be able to encourage their authentic self.

This is a very sweet and cute little book about being yourself (or being David Bowie, if you can be). The illustrations are adorably simple. They even managed to include the origin of the strange eyes without it being anything other than cute. It's a very cute and colorful introduction to a colorful character.

A lovely juxtaposition of images and text. I love this entire series, and I love how it almost works like a picture book, but with elements of graphic novel included. I especially enjoyed getting to read about David Bowie in this entertaining format.

I was so glad to have the chance to read this lovely little book.
I have always been a great David Bowie fan, and I think his genius and his love for music really changed the world for the better. He was one of those people whose personality and whose ideas have brought light to the lives of many many people and we should be glad we had the chance to have a man like David Bowie with us. A man who walked on a fine line for all his life and who helped people accept themselves in the best of ways.

These books really are a blessing. I think young kids can really get the best from them and learn about great minds and great people. The illustrations are the cutest and I can't recommend this series of book enough.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

This book is another fantastic short and inspirational book for children about famous people who had dreams and went after them.
I didn't know David Bowie wasn't born with different coloured eyes and will be researching more into that out of curiosity.
The only thing I wish this book would have included is David Bowie starring in the Labyrinth film as its one of my all time favourite films but thats just an idea that could have been included. But as always, the book flows smoothly, makes sense and sparks questions and interest about the person it is written about.

This is another great book to add to the Little People, Big Dreams collection and their My First range!

I love this series as they are perfect introductions to young people about some of the most famous and influential people from our past and present and are also a reminder about how these people have also changed our history.

5 stars from me for this one, very highly recommended and can't wait for my daughter to get involved in the series

This very colourful book is not so much about the personal history of David Bowie but what an unique person he was, and how his fame and weirdness in public spoke to other people and inspired them to do their own thing.

There is a rundown of his most famous customes, and of course, Ziggy Stardust is depicted.
A fun book if you want to share your favourite musician with your little ones while they may be still to small to understand the lyrics.

I recieved a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this short picture book about David Bowie's life. As a big Bowie fan, I want to share this book with the kids in my life. The artwork is clean and detailed, and the story gives just enough to spark a child's interest in learning more about this amazing man.

Cute and adorable, child appropriate book that conveys a message of acceptance and pride in being yourself. Bowie is portrayed as unique and creative but it's not presented in a way to make it seem like he is "weird". No negative connotations are given and I love that. We don't need more "othering" to promote acceptance. The best way is to present things that show that everyone is different from everyone else and thats normal and fine and no big deal. I'll definitely be buying this one for my daughter.

I love all of the books in this series and this is no different.

It gives just enough information for early readers to pique their interest and maybe find out more.. Even reading this now as an adult, I've found new information. I think this is another reason I love this series of books so much.

This would be a welcome addition to any classroom;.

Cute book about David Bowie. We learned a lot about him and his childhood and how he became a star. Thanks for the review copy.

This short and sweet little book about David Bowie is an excellent introduction to the musical legend.

I think books like these are not only great to introduce younger readers to famous individuals, but great for showing the unique life many people have led. Not everyone is "normal" or had a "normal" upbringing. Look at David Bowie and his incredible journey - he's such a wild card of a person and he's loved for it.

My favourite part of this book is the pages where it shows David in all of his wild outfits. Nothing screamed David Bowie like that page - the creativity, the uniqueness, and the nostalgia I felt for that rockstar. Maria did an excellent job with this book! I am thoroughly impressed. These illustrations literally scream David Bowie in all forms!

My only critique is that I wish this book was a little bit longer. There could have been a little more about his creativity and songs since he does have all of the exuberant outfits and performing history.

Overall, I thought this book was amazing! It's a great little read for young readers!

Three out of five stars.

Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing for allowing me an opportunity to read this story!

This was a super cute simple rundown of Bowie's life. I especially enjoyed the art of his various costumes.

My daughter loves music so she got really excited seeing this book. It's a quick, simple read which means it's a bit vague about his life. My daughter though loved the story and told me that he was very creative, unique, and inspiring. She enjoyed the illustrations as well and made sure that I knew that he was portraying an alien not just someone in a very strange outfit. She looks forward to more books in this series and wants me to find another book on Bowie.

I adore these types of books and I feel like David Bowie is one key artist to inspire tons of children around the world. The illustrations and colors used are absolutely gorgeous, but I just wish the story was a big longer and it explored more about his sexuality and androgyny, since I think it could help a lot of kids coming to terms and accepting themselves.

This series is a really lovely way to introduce some of the world's biggest icons. It tells a very simple story about how David Bowie grew up loving music and creating his own style and how it let to him becoming one of the world's greatest stars. It's easy and accessible for children to read and the illustrations are lovely and stylish too.

This was a short and fun read with pretty illustrations, and I’m sure kids will enjoy it a lot. A great addition to the Little People, Big Dreams series.

This was my first time reading one of the Little People, Big Dreams collection. I’ve seen and heard so many good things about these books, so when I saw this one on Net Gallery I knew I had to request it straight away. I am very thankful for Quarto Publishing Group for accepting my request.

I read it with my 11 month old daughter and she was so intrigued by the bright illustrations. The illustrations captured the star perfectly and the text was simple to follow.

Personally, I really enjoyed the fact children can learn about the infamous legends and icons that shaped our world. I love how these books can inspire children to be whoever they want and to follow their dreams. I also learnt some interesting facts myself, like how David Bowie eyes came to be two different colours.

I will definitely be ordering more of this collection, in the future for me and my daughter to read together.
