This was a very readable version of the original story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It has been simplified for a younger age group but the dialogue between Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson still retains its original energy. The story engaged me more as I progressed through the book.

Occasionally, an explanation box describes some unfamiliar item or idea, which is a very good ploy. The cartoon style drawings are great, succeeding in lightening the tone of the story. It is a fairly short read and I would recommend it to any fans of Sherlock Holmes who enjoyed the original stories. I enjoyed the book greatly and will look out for other books in the same series.

Thanks to Netgalley and Sweet Cherry Publishing for providing me with an advance copy. It will be available on 14th May 2020.

This publisher does an excellent job of adapting classics for younger readers.  In this instance, the choice is one of the most well known of the Sherlock Holmes canon.  Readers will become engaged in the story which is enhanced with cartoon like illustrations.  Hopefully, young readers appetite for more stories of Holmes and Watson will follow.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review.  Of note is that the adapter explains the meaning of some of the words that may be unfamiliar to the young, modern reader.
