"Hit and Run" by Lori Matthews is a well-written mystery/romance book. The heroine and hero are equally matched, and you feel a kinship with the heroine and her reasons for being in the situation she is in. As a reader, I found myself cheering Daniella on with her mission, and feeling her fears, pain and misery. I would recommend this book to other adult readers. The plot was well-planned and kept the reader reading.

I am loving this series! This is the third book in this series but can be read as a standalone! This book has everything! It had intrigue, drama, suspense and action packed! It has some steam to it too! I definitely recommend reading this book and series! Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for sharing this book with me!

Hit and Run is the third standalone novel in the author’s Callahan Security series. In this book, Gage is back in the US and frustrated as hell after running around Europe in the fruitless search for a computer programmer who he was assigned to protect...only to find out she’d been hiding out in Alaska the entire time. Computer programmer and hacker extraordinaire Dani considers the dark web to be her second home, but she realizes she’s in too deep when multiple attempts are made on her life. Dani begrudgingly accepts Gage’s help when it becomes clear to her that without him, there’s no chance that she’ll make it out alive when she heads to New York to deliver her cutting-edge facial recognition software. Their alpha personalities clash and the chemistry between them grows as they try to make it to New York in one piece.

I do love me an enemies-to-lovers “ohh nooo there’s only one bed so I guess we’ll have to share 😒😏” trope. I liked the main characters in this story; Gage was wonderfully grumbly and Dani was a spitfire and I can DEFINITELY relate to a heroine who gets hangry. This was a pleasant and well-paced military-romance/romantic suspense novel that will keep you turning the pages without wearing out your brain trying to figure out what happens next. The side characters (especially Dottie & Co.!) add enough humor and levity to keep the story from getting too dark or serious.

Kate Bathon Shufeldt Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

This is my first read by the author. I wish I had read the previous books in the series. I wouldn't say they are completely necessary, but I would have gotten a fuller picture of the storyline. The story was fast paced and had a lot of action. My only issue was that it seemed like there was no real reconciliation after the blow up. There was a lot of hurtful things said on both sides and the author seemed to gloss over it during the wrap up of the story.

Romantic Suspense Author Lori Matthews Releases Third Book in the Thrilling Callahan Security Series

HIT AND RUN

A Callahan Security Novel

By Lori Matthews

Lori Matthews, author of Break and Enter and Smash and Grab, returns with the last installment in the thrilling and sexy Callahan Security Series trilogy, HIT AND RUN .  In this novel, Gage Callahan knew his latest assignment with Callahan Security was going to be a disaster. He traipsed around Europe to locate the computer programmer he was hired to protect only to discover she’s actually a hacker hiding in Alaska.

Tensions mount when she narrowly escapes becoming roadkill as a vicious organization comes after her. It will take all his ingenuity to rush her to safety, especially when Gage’s primary objective…get her and the prototype to New York…becomes secondary to protecting his heart from a fatal attraction to the spunky woman.

Dani Pierce is used to working on the dark web but now she is truly scared because deadly trouble has arrived at her front door. The self-reliant hacker knows she’ll need help to survive her contract to build facial recognition software. The aggravating yet handsome man hired to protect her makes it clear he detests her, but that doesn’t stop her from developing feelings for him.

It soon becomes apparent to Gage that Dani’s in deeper than she’ll admit but her answers don’t explain why the deadly gang after her is always one step ahead. It will take his military skills and her hacking know-how to save not only their butts, but the budding love they’ve discovered in the midst of danger.

About the Author:

Raised in Canada, Lori grew up in a house filled with books and readers. Some of her fondest memories are of reading in the same room with her mother and sisters, arguing about whose turn it was to make tea -- no one wanted to put their book down.

Lori was introduced to romance because of my mom’s habit of leaving books all over the house. One day I picked up a Harlequin novel by Janet Daily. Little did she know at the time that it would set the stage for her future. She went on to discover mystery novels -- Agatha Christie was her favorite -- followed by suspense and authors like Wilber Smith and Ian Fleming.

Intrigued by the thought of combining her favorite genres, she attempted to write her first romantic suspense novel while in high school. "I wrote the first four chapters and then exams happened and that was the end of that. I desperately hope that book died a quiet death somewhere in a computer recycling facility," says Lori.

After a few years (OK, more than a few), two degrees, a marriage and kids, Lori attended a workshop in Tuscany that lit her spark for writing again. She has been pounding the keyboard ever since. She lives in Princeton, New Jersey with her supportive husband and two children.

Fast paced action, keeps you on the edge of your seat:
I enjoyed catching up with the Callahan brothers and the culmination of the series. These books definitely need to be read in order and I wished the author had of provided a few more hints at the beginning of this one to remind us what had transpired previously.
I liked that there was an emotional depth to the story and whilst there were some light-hearted and fun moments (largely thanks to the grannies), there were also some sad and more intense times too. I loved all of the mystery and suspense, yet the romance was great too. These brothers all seem to have a soft spot for "bad" girls! Gage and Dani initially clash yet walls start to come down the more time they spend together. There are however a number of obstacles to be overcome on the way to their HEA.
Overall an enjoyable and suspense-filled read although I wished that there had of been more closure as some threads were left unexplained.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.

Dani has been leading the Callahan Security team on a merry chase. gage has been trawling Europe for her but she has been hiding out in Alaska! It takes her attaining a possible assassin to make her wise up and admit where she is hiding! She may be a great hacker but she is a crappy informant LOL.

Gage starts off in a bad mood and not exactly wanting to be Dani's knight in shining armour. Sure She's pretty but she is also a hacker - he through she was a dweeb in a lab somewhere, a genuine IT whizzkid.

I read an ARC copy from NetGalley and I had to become a bit of a code breaker as lots of words had the “fi”,“ff” and “th” missing. It didn't corrupt the story but did make it exceedingly jarring to read. I do hope that has been fixed in the copy now released.

Solid 3.5 star read in my opinion, only let down was the missing letters. Gage was fabulously grouchy and Dani really knew how to punch his buttons. Some of the best scenes were on a Cruise ship with some very entertaining OAPS!

Hit and Run is my first book by Lori Matthews, and whilst I did enjoy it part of me wishes I had read the previous stories in this series not that it would be necessary to understand this one, but because when it starts it feels like it's picking up a story rather than beginning one. So for me, I felt like I didn't quite have the whole picture. But it certainly lived up to the genre, and it had some moments of action going on, not to mention some humour. Thanks to a group of grannie's, who Dani befriends whilst she and Gabe are trying to make their way safely back from Alaska. And I did quite like Dani and Gabe, but I wasn't one hundred percent convinced by their romance. Plus, I felt like the ending was too neat and tidy, especially considering how they initially parted. Yet all in all it was a satisfying and intriguing story, and having a second chance to read it error free really helped me discover that. Which is why I changed my rating from 3.75 to 4 stars.

Would recommend, especially to anyone who is a fan of the series. 🙂

Gabe and Dani do not trust each other when they first meet. He saw his best friend die in Iraq due to the enemy had hack into military intelligence and gave them the wrong information. Gage had been ordered to find his friend and attempt to save him - he was too late. To this day Gage had never trusted hackers.

Dani does not trust easily after being raised in the foster care system - her foster mom was abusive to her as she was growing up. Dani remembers her foster mother forcing her to learn to swim by forcing her in deep water and to survive by swimming to her. To this day Dani can not be around the ocean or a large body of water without having a panic attack,.

Dani and Gabe meet after he has been attempting to find her in Europe to protect her against someone attempting to kill her . Dani has managed to keep her location in Alaska a secret until a woman resembling her is killed. Dani calls her contact to request help with keeping her alive.

Gabe learns after meeting Dani that she was hired to hack and develop a face recognizing software for a major hotel company. She stole the main program from China and believes they are trying to kill her to get the program back.

The story read like a comedy of errors, but it also is an action adventure, ex-military story that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat throughout the story..

Boom! This book begins with a bang and just keeps running!

After following Dani's trail all over Europe, Gage finally has her in his sites. Her ability to prevaricate, has kept her safe so far, but now she really needs Gage's help. As a top level hacker, Dani 'helped herself' to facial recognition software developed by a foreign government, trying to help a friend find her family. They're not happy and want their intellectual property back.

Hit and Run follows Dani and Gage running from one situation to another, using Dani's hacking skills to get them to safety, and if that fails, using Gage's guts and brawn. Soon, they realize there is a mole somewhere in the organization Dani and Gage are working for. It's not difficult to figure out who is working against them and I was surprised that Dani and Gage were surprised when they finally figured it out! Then, there is the granny brigade who help Dani when she thinks she needs to get away from Gage and they are hilarious!

Suspense, romance, and hilarity. This book was predictable in the end, but it did hit all my buttons. I really enjoyed Hit and Run. It is the third book by Lori Matthews in the Callihan Security series. I do recommend reading the series in order. There is so much back story in the first two books, and I feel that history is needed to fully appreciate Hit and Run.

The story raced from scene to scene with almost no downtime. Dani is an exceptional hacker. And is contracted to develop a sophisticated facial recognition system to assist Jamison Drake to find his missing sister. Dani is being followed and feels threatened and asks for protection from Drake, and Gage Callahan arrives to protect her. From that moment on, the pace is non-stop as Dani and Gage race to avoid capture and death.

Hit and Run is the third book in the Callahan Security series.

My issue is I saw no development of the romance. They were so busy avoiding capture that every scene they landed in a new drama. Now, this would not be a problem if this was a thriller, but Hit and Run is a romantic suspense. I still don’t grasp how their romance developed. My other issue was Gage hated hackers; he blamed hackers for providing intelligence that killed his best friend. Well, if Gage didn’t say once, he must have said or thought it over a dozen times. “I hate hackers;” therefore, Gage feels he can’t fall in love with Dani. I found Dani at times to be obstructionist and annoying. So I guess you could say I didn’t like this story.
Lori Matthews has a gift for plotting and a fast-paced, exciting story. The majority of the story was set on a cruise ship travelling through the Inside Passage to Vancouver. The story is action-packed.
Read this story for the thriller with a touch of romance. I still give the story three stars, but for me, as a romantic suspense reader, it didn’t hit the brief. I was provided this copy by NetGalley for an honest review.

Dani's an excellent hacker whose work has placed her in a bit of danger. Gage is hired by Dani's client to keep her safely out of harm's way. Although this book is part of a series, this was my first and I followed along just fine. Hit and Run checks all the boxes: mystery, romance, happy ending with a shipload of adventure in between. The loss of a star is for two reasons: 1. the premise Dani borrowing some code from a powerhouse counts as a tstl moment and 2. I'm all for being a strong woman but if you need help and a hero swoops in, you don't try to thwart his every move because of your independence. Throughout the book, the latter was a struggle for me. I couldn't find a single thing wrong with Gage who was alpha, gorgeous and with the patience of a saint. Secondary characters, including the Callahan brothers, Dani's landlord in AK and some helpers on a cruise ship added interest and humor.

If you're up for an adventure with a banter, some often amusing byplay and a bit of mystery, I'd recommend Hit and Run. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the arc on which this review is based.

This is a well-written story. I really liked the two main characters, Danielle Pierce and Gage Callahan. I kept rooting for them as I read. There's plenty of action and the storyline is fast-paced. This is the third book in Ms. Matthews' Callahan Security series. I haven't read the first two books in the series but I believe this book works as a standalone.

Daniella (Dani) is a computer programmer/hacker. Gage Callahan is one of 3 brothers who own the Callahan Security Company. Gage has been all over Europe seeking Dani as she is in danger while she creates a software program for their friend Drake. Now Dani is actually in Alaska running from the danger she has found herself in. When these two finally meet up sparks fly but egos get in the way. As Dani and Gage leave Alaska her skills come in handy to protect them from danger and continues right till the conclusion of who is behind what and why. I love the characters whose personalities and reasons for their actions are well developed, you like and root for them both to get out of trouble and to realize they are right for each other. Though the 3rd book in the series it did fine as a standalone. I hope we see many more books from Lori Matthews.

While many people reviewing have said that they had no problem following along even though they hadn't read the previous books in this series I didn't have that problem as I am a firm reader of the series as in i have read both of the previous books about the Callahan Security firm. Like the others in this series this is an action packed story with a healthy dose of romance.

Gage Callahan isn't to happy he has spent all his time traipsing over Europe only to find that the hacker he has been tasked with protecting has been in Alaska all the time but he has finally tracked her down and now he can do his job. Dani Pierce is ion the final stages of perfecting a facial recognition program governments want it but criminals and terrorists don't Soon she is the cross hairs of those that want to stop her and it will be up to Gage to keep her safe So they are soon on the run but romance blossoms and soon Dani is more than a contract to Gage Can he keep her safe You will have to read to see

Hit & Run is a book that is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.

A quick aside: I will admit that going into this read, I did not realize it was the third in the series. This is an issue that was 100% on me because I simply didn’t pay attention. I didn’t find out until I actually went to post my review on GoodReads and read someone else’s review that mentioned this. That alone should speak to the fact that Ms. Matthews did an excellent job making Hit & Run function fully as a standalone, something that can be hard to do.

Now for the actual review:

I’m a huuuuuge fan of romantic suspense. Huge. So when I read the blurb, I snatched this bad boy off of NetGalley with a swiftness. Add in a bit of enemies-to-lovers and I am digging it big time.

In the beginning we meet a grumpy Gage. Which I find entirely too charming. Okay, that’s not the actual beginning, the actual beginning involves a body flying through the air, but I digress…

Our boy has a legitimate reason to be a bit ticked off after scouring Europe for a woman he’s been hired to protect only to learn she was in the US. Let’s not forget that once he finally finds Dani, he gets a shaky shotgun pointed directly at his forehead and… Yeah, I kinda understand the grump.

Dani is a genius hacker who… has made some bad decisions. Some very bad decisions. Since I know people in real life who are very smart and completely lack common sense, I have lumped Dani into that category. Sorry, doll, you can’t “borrow” secret code from a government and expect it to all be peachy keen.

Yep, she did that.

And now that she has people after her to the extent that they killed her doppelganger in a hit and run, Gage is charged with protecting her. They flee the Alaska town where Dani had been hiding to try to find some place that is safe enough to regroup, eliminate the threat, and get her back to her normal life.

But, their time on the run has resulted in a spark that turned into a massive flame as the chemistry between them exploded on the page.

Ms. Matthews does an exceptional job of world-building and her descriptions are so lush and rich that I am green with envy over her immense gift with words. You are immediately sucked into Gage and Dani’s world… for better or worse.

Hit & Run is a fast-paced romantic suspense with a delicious enemies-to-lovers trope and a deep looming threat that Ms. Matthews did an excellent job chilling my bones with.

Will they find in themselves to accept the other completely...

I confess I had this book downloaded but it’s Netgalley release date was set in two weeks. Yet an other author sponsored it as being released yesterday.
Gosh!
So I switched my reading schedule to add it for today.
I did not know the author but from time to time, I love a good romantic suspense.
Dani and Gage are two persons very set on their way, both so stubborn they will nearly blow to dust their relationship before understanding how each was relying on the other.
Dani did not grew up in a loving environment, so after the abuse she suffered in her foster home, it is understandable she could not follow a straightforward path. She made herself and choose her own path. Not a clear road but one bordering shadows and laws.
Gage is the down to the rules guy, he believes in laws and justice not in chaos. He is honorable and his words are vows he always keeps.
So Dani is his antithesis, worse his nemesis since his best friend’s death.
It was fun to watch them working together, trusting then doubting, going for the jugular then putting their life in the line of sight.

I haven’t read the previous books but Gage’s brothers were fun. While the end contains the most of the emotional scenes.

This is the first time in reading this author with the story tidbit that intrigued me. Of course it had a security company and they always seem to make for a far from normal reading. Gage is after one he was supposed to protect but soon discovers misinfo has it being something else. What seems to be after Dani is life or death and with Gage's help might just see the life part of it. Other things develop that adds spice to the story with it being one reason to jump into this one. The banter that opens is also delight added but it does have its mix of danger. Glad to have given it a try with it certainly keeping your interest while you are reading it.

Hit and Run is the 3rd book in the Callahan Security Series, I hadn't read the previous two books but I had no problems following along with the storyline. I found the book to be very well written and a easy book to follow along with, I will go back and read the rest of the series also. Gage and Dani have quite a bit of chemistry between them, but Gage has some major issues where hackers are concerned. I would recommend it to others.

I received a ARC from NetGalley and the publisher and was under no obligation to leave a favorable review, all opinions expressed here are my own.

This was my first experience reading this author's work and even though this was the 3rd book in this series, I was able to follow along without having read the first two. I received a copy from NetGalley and I was unable to read it due to some corrupted files so I was graciously given a PDF to read. Unfortunately, reading a PDF is not quite as enjoyable for me as reading a mobi on my Kindle, and because of that I'm giving this read 4 stars. The storyline, the pace, the suspense and the characters kept my interest and I like the writing style of this author. The whole dark web environment was quite informative and interesting and I'll definitely be reading more from this author. I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC for NetGalley.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

While this is the third book in the series, you do not have to read the prior stories to enjoy this one. This book really started with a bang! Or I should really say, a hit and run. The suspense doesn't really stop there and the action gets really intense at times. There was a section in the book that really brought me to tears. I needed several tissues so a word of warning.

Dani Pierce is a hacker. She is working on a project that just may get herself killed. She has no family as she grew up in foster care, except for Carly. Carly is another foster child who is dying of a brain tumor. Dani and Carly are sisters in the best sense. Gage Callahan, has been sent by Drake (the man who commissioned Dani for the software) to protect her when things start to go sideways. Being a hacker, Dani was good at throwing people off her tracks. Except the bad guys are closing in and Gage is as well.

The action is fast paced and kept me highly entertained and glued to by e-reader. The scenes were well written and the plot flowed smoothly. This is a sexy read. The author did a great job of using as few words to get the scene(s) done is a manner, that should not offend most. If you prefer a clean, sweet read, then this isn't for you. I highly recommend this to someone over the age of 18.

Hit and Run is the third book in the Callahan Security series. This book is told from dual points of view by Dani and Gage.

This book starts out with Dani seeing a hit and run. The person who was hit looked and dressed just like her, so it is to be believed she was the intended target. After the Hit and Run Gage shows up to keep her protected. Not realizing she was a hacker and not a computer programmer.

Gage lost one of his best friends to a hacker and has a hard time with Dani's profession. As Gage is protecting her, he realizes there is more going on, and her life may be in danger. Can Gage keep her and the program he's there to protect safe? Can they escape the danger? Will they get their happily ever after?

I really enjoyed this book, and am liking this series so far. It's a suspenseful romance which I found fun. You never knew what was going to happen next!
