A enemies to lovers story about two people forced againts eachother by a war.
Sol and Kelan have been tought to hate eachother but when fate brings them together they start to wonder if everything is the way they were told. Fighting against themselves Firefrost is a really good debut with fresh writing and great characters.

Can't wait to read the sequel.

Fun, easy, and well written.
I read through this in a night! I enjoyed the characters very much although I did feel like the romance was a little rushed, but I'm a big fan of the slow burn. I was able to get past it though, and go along for the ride. The world building, for me was sufficient. I didn't feel lost, and I didn't feel overburdened with details. It was done in a way that let me fill in some of the blanks without much issue, which I enjoy.
. All in all 4 stars. It was a nice, light and entertaining read.

Firefrost is a novel that kept me at the edge of my seat the entire way through. I read it in a single day and could not put it down! I never knew what I was going to expect next on this wild adventure, which made it even more intriguing. The chemistry between Sol and Kelan is perfect and well paced, and the magical elements to this book are original to anything I've ever seen before. I'm really happy that there were not many parts of this book that seemed like filler, and I always felt engaged with what was going on.

I'm looking forward to the sequel!

This was the book that kept on giving! The plot was fast paced and contained loads of twists and action.

I adored the relationship between Sol and Kelan, which was a beautifully written enemies-to-lovers romance. Sol was such a strong female lead and I felt Kelan brought out the best in her. I think their relationship was a little rushed initially, but I still found their love to be believable and strong.

I am looking forward to the sequel and can't wait to discover more about Sol's heritage, Saint Katrine and the royal family.

Thank you NetGalley and to the publisher for providing this arc in exchange for an honest review.

Like another reviewer said, this book is totally binge worthy. I may or may not have spent all day just reading it!! 😉

The story really is pretty good, and I’ll be impatiently waiting for the next installment. I really liked that Sol wasn’t one of those heroines that is tough but questions EVERYTHING. She’s strong and sticks to her instincts. I liked how the “prisoner falls for the captor” dynamic played out in this book. It was refreshing. The books covers a bunch of plots in very cohesive way. Perfect ending to setup the sequel.

Wow!! This book hooks you right from the start!! The author has created an incredible novel detailing the story of two seemingly different characters who when intertwined spin this story of love, loss and adventure. Plot twists all the way through. This book is unlike any of the others I've read before with unique storylines that will grab you and keep you wanting more! Couldn't put it down! Both Sol and Kelan are written extremely well each with enough of a backstory to explain more about their characters and their reasoning behind hard decisions. 100% recommend this book!

This is a typical enemies turn into lovers scenario, but in the best way possible. The story captivated me immediately, as the author plunges the characters into a dangerous, action-packed adventure. There was so much going on throughout the book, but I never felt overwhelmed or to the point where I had difficulty remembering everything that had previously transpired.

The beginning of Sol and Kelan's romantic relationship did feel a bit unnatural at first, but I think this helped showcase how difficult it was for them to overcome their racial differences. It definitely had a forbidden romance vibe similar to Romeo and Juliet where the rest of the world couldn't fathom or understand how they fell in love.

The only cons I had were in the beginning, there were times where the dialogue was very cringe worthy, but it smoothed out after the first chapter or so!

My final thoughts: Overall, this was a magical adventure that left me wanting more, and I can't wait for the next installment!

My Overall Rating: 4/5

Disclosure: I received a complimentary eARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes. I'd like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me this opportunity!

I LOOVE Firefrost! I am quite impressed by the book. The book , set in the mountains was definitely unexpected, but the world-building is good, and the characters are well-developed too! Kelan is my favorite, especially considering how he goes through his own struggle for control from his pyra. Sol, took me a bit more time to get used to, but in the end... I ended up enjoying her character. I am a huge fan of the enemies-to- lovers trope and while the romance was a bit rushed... like fire, i think it should've been slower, but overall... I honestly can't wait for more! the plot knows how to pull you in and I found myself devouring this book

Thank you Netgalley and Camille Longley for letting me read this book!

I love me a good enemies to lovers story! This story was action packed and had me on the edge of my seat. I found Sol and Kelan to be interesting characters. I thoroughly enjoyed their journey together to outrun and survive the burning war. I do wish that there had been a bit more world building. I was left with many questions about the different kingdoms and who Saint Katrine. Overall, this was a good read. Can’t wait for the next!

This was a great slow burn romance lost in the snow adventure with a side of prejudice and self hate. Hate in the deacon within got a bit old but still a good book.

An enemies-to-lovers fantasy story, Firefrost is an adventure-filled prequel to the Flameskin Chronicles. Sol, a huntress, leads a group through the mountains, she knows the journey is dangerous. Flameskins an enemy race have targeted Princess Isabella, one of the people in Sol’s party. They are attacked, but that isn’t the only trouble that lurks in the mountains.

An avalanche kills all but Sol and Kelan, enemies on the opposite sides of a raging war. In order to survive, Sol and Kelan reluctantly travel across the mountains together. The pair have been taught to hate each other, but, as they travel across treacherous territory, they begin to question all they know. The enemies turn to friends, and they realize that their feelings for each other are the least of their problems. They must face the war that continues to rage, the political deception that they are unwittingly pulled into, battles for power, the dangerous land that they travel, and the prejudices that threaten to tear them apart.

The fantasy elements in the story are unique and immersive, as is the world that the author created. Flameskins, for example, have the power of fire because of the pyras that live inside of them and constantly try to take them over. Once the pyra takes over, the person is lost to the demon forever. Mages and nature that has magical components are equally dynamic, as is the setting. I could easily visualize the frigid mountain, the icy, frozen paths, the epic battles, the villages, and other elements of the setting.

Sol is a fantastic protagonist. Strong, stubborn, and hard, she grows so much throughout the story. She has strong biases against Kelan’s race. Sol idolizes her deceased dad, who told her how evil the Flameskins are, and she has no reason to doubt him. However, the more she gets to know Kalen, the more she thinks her father is wrong. Watching her slowly come to terms with her ever-growing feelings and her fear of giving in to love is fantastic!

As much as I like Sol, Kalen’s character is equally fascinating. Trained from age ten to fight and embrace his pyra, Kalen struggles between his duty and his desire to not lose himself. Kalen is a strong-willed warrior who fights to maintain control over his pyra. He is also quicker to show his feelings and fierce in his desire to protect Sol. I found his character to be complex and intriguing.

Of course, my favorite part of the story is the romance between Sol and Kelan. I’m a sucker for a good romance, and Sol and Kelan won my heart. They both have to face their life-long prejudices in order to work together and survive the mountains. You can tell how uncomfortable they are at first by their stilted and awkward conversations and Sol’s angry refusal to compromise. Kelan even tries to joke with Sol at times, but she still grapples with hate and anger. However, traveling together in extreme conditions softens both of them, and they grow to trust, rely on, and even like each other.

I love how their relationship grows. When Sol asks Kelan to wait for her, his response is so sweet. “For a thousand years he would wait, if he had to.” These are two wounded and conflicted people who have suffered loss and have insurmountable responsibilities. However, they learn that they are stronger together than they ever were apart.

There are also some great messages in this story about what it means to be a family, the long-lasting and detrimental effects of racism, facing inner demons (literally and figuratively), and embracing love. Political intrigue, found families, secrets, potential kidnappings, and more make for a richly developed and action-packed plot.

A binge-worthy romance/fantasy, Firefrost is a wonderful prequel to the Flameskin Chronicles, and I can’t wait until the first book in the series is released. Thanks so much to Netgalley for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I received an ARC of FIREFROST by Camille Longley thanks to the publisher though NetGalley. It is a marvelous Romeo and Juliet novel with fire magic and wildness like an icy-filled Starry Eyes. It is everything I could possibly want concept-wise in a book.

The first half of FIREFROST followed this concept perfectly. I could live in that mountainous terrain forever and listen to the banter and hatred and warm, fuzzy feelings. Sadly, this did not last for the whole book. While I understand that the plot requires more than this (trying to withhold spoilers), I think I would have preferred a duology where the mountain area plot was expanded upon to create book 1 and then the fallout was book 2.

I think this is my long-winded and whiny way of saying I wanted more books because I loved it and having more time to expand upon it would make it even better.

Sol and Kelan are truly incredible characters with such strong morals and sense of goodness that their polarity draws you in.

On top of all of these already amazing reasons to read this book is the fact that it tackles a huge struggle of society: discrimination. It does it in a way that is not overpowering, and it’s resolution feels a bit too real (which is more a comment on life rather than the novel).

If you enjoy tension, war, magic, and a romance for the ages, this is for you.

Just finished Firefrost by Camille Longley. I finished it in two days because it has all the things I love: strong female characters, a slow burn romance plot, lots of mythos building, and cliffhangers. Definitely a series I will be following.

If you haven't read the summary yet here it is:
Sol is a huntress. She has grown up in the Ulves mountains and they are a part of her. Sol is asked to help lead a princess over the mountains for a diplomatic marriage but along the way she meets Kelan who is a Flameskin, a group of people she has been raised to hate. They have to work together and they find themselves confronting their own prejudices and beliefs about each other.

My review:
I genuinely enjoyed this book. It was a quick read for me, and I was in the mood to read fantasy novel like this that builds a world and the mythology around it.
Pros: Loved the enemies to lovers romance storyline (I am a sucker for those) but I also liked that it wasn't the be all end all to the story. There was lots of action and twists and turns to the story which I enjoyed. I also liked how some things weren't tied up in the end so that gives me buy in to the next book. I also really liked how this books tackles prejudices against groups of people because of something they can't control.
Cons: Some of the characterization felt rushed. I felt like there were moments where everything happened really quickly...There's a part where Sol says that she feels like whenever they felt safe something would happen. I started to feel that way too (almost too many survivals if that makes sense).

I definitely would purchase this book for my classroom. I have a lot of students who enjoy fantasy so they would like this.

I'll admit that when I first walked into this world I wasn't aware that it was a prequel to a series so please take into account that my review and rating are based off of reading Firefrost as a standalone.

This world is exciting (wow!), enthralling, and absolutely brimming with adventure and angst!

This beautiful book (have you seen that cover?!) is told in dual POV (yay!) and is a classic enemies to lovers tale! The story follows Sol, a huntress born in the mountains tasked with accompanying a Lady through the frozen mountains to an arranged marriage. Her party quickly becomes accosted by Flameskin soldiers, those born with the ability to wield fire, and her world is turned upside down! Enter - Kelan, a Flameskin lieutenant who is rescued by Sol and falls to her mercy as they precariously try to escape the grasp of the mountains.

Watching the character growth was magical and I was on the edge of my seat for a lot of this book as the twists and turns just kept coming! I appreciated that although this story contained romance it wasn't solely driven by it. The magic system felt unique and original and even if I found myself wishing for more world building throughout the story I now realize that that information may be gleaned from Camille's future books.

My main reason for knocking a star off on my rating was in regard to follow through, I wanted to experience more at every twist and turn. I wanted to be able to live in the captivating scenarios for more than just a paragraph or two. Kelan and Sol have so many exciting and amazing things happen to them on their journey and as a reader I wanted my involvement with them to last longer in those scenarios of intense growth or turmoil.

With all that said, if you are looking for a unique story chock full of plot twists, adventure, betrayal, romance, and excitement then this book is likely for you! I would definitely recommend it to fans of Shelby Mahurin and Danielle Jensen. I look forward to checking out the rest of the books in this series!

Huge thank you to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for an e-arc in exchange for an honest review!

Sol was like the mountains, an unchangeable part of the land. Eternal and unbreakable.

This book was received as an ARC from BooksGoSocial in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

I have been searching for a long time for a extravagant, addicting and compelling YA Fantasy book and I think my search is over. Also, I am all about unique character names but these were a little bit on the extreme especially when they appear quite often like Sol and Kelan however, while reading I completely understood the mindset Camille Longley was going for in writing the story. My heart was racing, jumping and skipping at every chapter and I did not want to stop reading this book. Reading this book was like getting a brand new shiny toy that you just want to keep on playing with. I wanted to keep reading Firefrost over and over.

Not only will we consider adding this title to our YA collection but I am definitely going to be first in line to buy it at its release date and I know it will have a home on my bookshelf. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

When this book ended, I was so upset that it was over, and I couldn't read more about these characters! Sol and Kelan are adorable little cinnamon rolls - cinnamon rolls that could kill you. This book is beautiful (hello cover!) and classic enemies to lovers tale.

The world-building in this book is wonderful, descriptive, and very creative. The different kingdoms and how they relate to one another is very well throughout, and the plot had me turning page after page with a unique magical world. The development of Sol and Kelan's relationship is perfect and timed so well, with romance and so many surprising and adventurous plot twists! She is a huntress trying to save her home and village by leading a party through the winter mountains. He is a soldier fighting for his very soul. They come together in order to survive, but they soon find themselves in the middle of a war that threatens them both.

If you are looking for romance, adventure, twists and turns, with beautiful world-building, this is a book for you to read! As a note, this book is a prequel to a series that takes place in the future. It could easily be read as a standalone.

Thank you so much to Netgalley and BooksGoSocial for the e-book arc of this wonderful book in exchange for an honest review.

I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Firefrost was definitely giving me vibes of other books and some movies. Not sure why I was thinking of Elsa or Pocahontas towards the end.. but I definitely was. Other than that, this was giving off some wicked king vibes as well. Either way, I enjoyed this book because I just love enemies turning into lovers. There's just something addicting about them.

In it, you will meet Sol and Kelan. She's a huntress and a mage. While he's a flameskin and technically an evil demon in her eyes. Yet, he hasn't given himself away and continues to fight his inner demon/pyra. Along the way, they meet each other. I mean, they did try to kill one another plenty of times.. and so did a possible avalanche BUT details!

This whole world and mountain were pretty cool. I wanted to know why people hated one another and why people were just killing them based off of who they were or born into. Didn't really seem fair to me but eventually Sol's hatred for Kelan floated away. She no longer saw him as the demon she was always taught to see.. but as a human being.

After the ending, I'm super excited for the next book. I want to know if my Disney vibes will continue to grow and what is going to happen next on this new island.

LOVED THIS! I expected another straight forward fantasy YA but each time I thought I had this book figured out, it surprised me. It seems like your typical chosen one young adult fantasy with a Romeo and Juliet style romance but it’s more an exploration of this fantasy world told through this couples struggle to be together.

Longley does an amazing job at reeling you in with the story and all it’s little subplots. It’s a binge-worthy book and I can not wait to read the next one. I already signed up for her mailing list to get my hands on a prequel novella.

Thank you to netgalley for the ARC copy of this book in return for a fair review

This book was good, really good - but the pacing drags it down. I prefer to start with the positives though so here they are: the locations are simple and interesting, which makes it easy to follow. I loved the enemies to lovers plot - a trope I always tend to enjoy! The characters were interesting and I liked the revelations about their histories and such - I won't say much more so as to not spoil it for anyone reading this review before reading the book. I love the idea of the Pyre, and spent most of the book wanting to know more about them - what are they, how does it happen? What does the possession feel like?

Unfortunately it's never explained.

The chapters are short and fast paced, something that is both positive...and negative.

The pacing of this book is my only real negative. This book should have been 2 books, or roughly the size of Priory of the Orange Tree. Things are hinted at and then revealed almost instantly. There's no waiting for something you've guessed to be revealed, you'll find out almost immediately in the next chapter, or the one after. There were so many points where I felt like it would be a good ending only for the book to just...keep...going. I found myself longing for more time in each chapter, each location, rather than feeling as if I was sprinting full speed through the plot.

In summary - 4/5 as I liked the story but the pacing was so off putting. I like a bit of tension and this had next to none. Things happen so quickly.

I really enjoyed this story. I liked the main character and how she grew as a person throughout this book. She started off as a huntress in a small town, only really knowing her mountains, her village and her father's stories. She grew up hating flameskins and fire magic. But when she is faced with one "demon" she realises the world is not black and white. That you can't judge someone easily. It really shows how prejudice based on fear and hatred is often wrong and mistaken. It felt similar to the situation in my country, where LGBTQ is considered an evil, dangerous ideology by half of the people, the Christian Church and the government. This book shows how hatred can spread and let to unimaginable suffering caused by people who do not even try to understand the other side.
As for the romance I got a bit annoyed with the constant back and forth on Sol's part, bit I always rooted for Kelan and his happiness so I never stopped hoping it would work in the end.
I got a bit confused with the ending and felt like a lot of things were left unfinished. Then I realised it is not a standalone, but a #0 in a series. So that makes more sense.
All in all would recommend.

The book started of well with an interesting plot but in between it became quite repetitive, with the constant confusion between Sol and Kellan, and them being hunted. The parts which could have been explored felt a bit rushed while the romance took the forefront throughout the book. The characters are likable, and I definitely would have like a more elaborate world building of the haven. The ending while interesting did feel hurried but it was intriguing enough that I would, still pick up the next book.
I would have liked a little 7 in the world building and character development, but all in all, it was light-hearted quick read.
My rating: 3.5

Holy...guys. I think I just found my new favourite book and author?

Okay so here we go. This is probably one of the most original and compelling ya stories I’ve read in a long time. The characters are likeable, the story takes turns I didn’t expect and I never truly knew if the characters I was falling in love with were truly safe. I was genuinely scared for them, staying away worrying.

The characters are relatable, their relationships fleshed out and realistic. The world building and magic system is beautiful and yet simple. This is a stand-alone prequel I think? And yet it doesn’t feel any less important. I honestly can’t stop myself from wanting to read more and this author is definitely one worth watching!

A wonderful addition to a horrible year, this book has made me laugh, cry, lose sleep, almost have an anxiety attack. All in a good way.

To avoid spoilers I’ll just say everything is well fleshed our and it doesn’t feel like a short book. It feels like an epic story and the pacing is amazing honestly. Just go and read it!

Kelan is a Flameskin. He lives every day with his pyra, the voice inside his head that will someday consume him, whispering for him to burn the world to its knees. Sol is a huntress with a hatred for Flameskins inherited from her father.

When an incident in the wilderness leaves the two of them as the only survivors, they must rely on each other to survive the journey onward. The fiery dynamic between Kelan and Sol keeps the reader turning pages to find out what happens next.

Their journey is refreshingly unique. Longley weaves a story with many unexpected twists and turns. When I read, I’m constantly trying to puzzle out what’s coming next. “Firefrost” left me delightfully surprised and hoping for a sequel.

TL;DR:

“Firefrost” is a refreshingly unique fantasy that will keep the reader questioning until the last page. Add this one to your wishlist now!

I received this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Firefrost follows two enemies on opposing sides of a war. Sol, who is a hater of flameskins, huntress for her village and Fire mage, though she has sworn to never use her power and Kelan, a flameskin soldier who has resisted possession by his ‘Pyra’, the demon that lives inside him and gives him his fire ability.

Sol and Kelan’s story is a delight to read. You will quickly find yourself attached to them as characters and immersed in their banter as they are forced to rely on each other to survive.

Firefrost gives an interesting twist to the enemies to lovers trope as the very thing which can extinguish Kelan’s ability to use fire enables Sol to utilise fire herself. But what happens when both of them are forced into circumstances where they must make a choice: Become what they despise or perish.

This book has quite a few interesting twists and turns, the further i read the more interesting it became. Especially towards the end.

As the war rages on, lines are crossed, feelings are fought and sacrifices made. Can fire thaw hearts full of ice?

Rating-
⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ /5 (overall)
❤️❤️❤️/5 (romance)
🧭 🧭 🧭 🧭/5 (adventure)

Firstly, I love the whole idea of this book, there is so much potential for future novels! The characters were likeable. Sol was a badass independent woman who supplied her village with food, she had great character development as the series progressed even if she had random mood swings (relatable, right?). Kelan, once Sol opened her mind and let her guard down, turned out to be a squishy cinnamon roll who would do anything to protect the ones he loved or deemed innocent. A man of morals and integrity.

I very much enjoyed that the book was multi-pov! I loved seeing the story from both perspectives and seeing how each interpret the others words and actions in comparison to how they were intended and how their different backgrounds and upbringings impacted this! However, for an enemies to lovers book, the romance, whilst sweet developed a little too quickly for me, with this trope I personally prefer a much slower burn and a build up of tension.

I feel there were parts that could’ve been elaborated on more. I found the idea of the Pyra interesting, but I was a little confused when it came to the differences between a Flameskin and a Mage and how they occurred, as there were families that had both. I’d like to see this elaborated on and explained a bit more as the series continues! Dryads were also mentioned but not much information was given so I hope to see more of them and their relevance explained a bit more too! Some important characters were mentioned fairly early on in the book but when it came time for them to appear, powers were mentioned but not explained, I feel that they would’ve had a stronger impact on the reader if it were explained why they were so feared, what they/their powers were, there was mention of it but not in great detail!

And damn! I was not expecting to be ambushed with a battle pretty much straight away but I am here for it. It gives you a sense of powers early on and has you wanting to read on. The ending definitely left me wanting more!

All in all, I believe this was a good introduction to the series, it’s the authors debut novel so I expect we’ll see things ironed out as the series progresses. Great for YA fantasy lovers! I will definitely be picking up book 2 to see what happens! This is definitely an author I’ll be keeping and eye out for!!

I would like to thank Camille Longley & BooksGoSocial for my copy of the ARC. Due to this kind gesture, I have decided to leave an honest review.

I am in looooove!! I loved the cover, I loved the description and I completely loved the book. I haven't really been impressed with books lately so to actually enjoy this has brought me great joy, 4 stars!

In a world where an age-old war is still blazing (literally) Sol must help move Lady Isabella to meet her Prince to help gain troops to win this thing once and for all. But when a close encounter with the flameskins turns sour, what happens when human/mage must team up with the Devil to get back home safely? Can Kelan show Sol he's not the demon that she thinks he is?

Aw I loved this so much, then I found out this is just the start, it's prequel before the actual story and I am SHOOK. I genuinely don't know how to feel? I absolutely adore these characters. They overcame so much together. Freezing cold winter, hunger, everyone trying to kill them, family prejudice, their own prejudice! Now we need to say goodbye to them?! URGH.

There were a few characters but the love I have for Kelan is real. He is just a sweetheart right from the start! He is battling his own demon, loves someone who is ice, just wants to be free! He is perfect. My heart always ached how he always just thinks he's not good enough, he is.. HE ALWAYS IS.

I am looking forward to reading on in the series. It was fun, good paced (even with complete cringe moments) and I even had some Pocohuntus vibes going on! I just can't wait to see where it goes.

I found this book pretty good!!
It was intriguing and it gripped me almost immediately! I liked Sol, she was super loveable and she had this fiercess about her that made her character all-the-more interesting.
The slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers romance was cute, but I found that I couldn't get fully into it. I also wished we'd gotten more wordbuilding and how it works!
Overall, a nice read, I recommebd it to lovers to YA fantasy.

I originally wanted to read this book based on the cover alone - because it is just gorgeous! The description of the book was interesting to me as well as I tend to enjoy YA fantasy novels. This book did not disappoint me.

I would give this a solid 4 stars on a 5 star rating scale.

Sol is a Huntress in the inhospitable Ulves Mountains, and was raised to hate the Flameskins - fire demons who possess people. One fateful journey through her beloved mountains brings her into contact with a Flameskin, Kelan, whose actions make her reconsider everything she thought she knew about a people she was bred to hate.

Enemies to lovers is the general description of the romance but for me, I saw it as so much more than that. This is the story of a young woman struggling within herself to follow her heart and to not just blindly hate because that is what she was taught. For me, it was a heartwarming story of a young girl not only coming of age, but of coming into her own personal power to choose her own path - despite the prejudices of her past. It raises the age old question of can 2 people from very different worlds put those differences aside and become something greater together?

There is a lot of action in this book too, although I have to say that the action that occurs in the natural world was far more enjoyable for me than the "battle" scenes.

Thank you to NetGalley and to the author, Camille Longley, for the opportunity to receive this advance copy. I am looking forward to future installments in this story.

"She’s a huntress:

Sol and Kelan are enemies in an age-old war, forced to depend on each other to survive a perilous journey through the mountains. As fire melts the ice in Sol’s heart, she questions everything she’s been taught to believe, and Kelan becomes more desperate to fight the flames that consume him. Together they discover that their struggle will have repercussions for both sides of this burning war." ( Description taken from Goodreads)

*****

This book was something different.
First of all, I love the enemies to lovers thing, which was written so nice and good and so that you can'T really tell. Then. The moral choices. This book is such a deep dive and discusses some really deep things that makes us really bound to these characters, because they seem real because of their choices. Can someone be truly evil? Are we evil from the beginning? What is a good moral? What is right, what's wrong?
And next to these question is a great world building, an even greater story telling and just lovable characters. Definitely one of my favorite reads this year!

Thank you to Netgalley and BooksgoSocial for my eARC in return for my honest review.

Firefrost by Camille Longley is an excellently written fantasy novel. Focussing on Sol d’Hillerod, a huntress struggling to feed her family in the wake of her father's death the previous winter; and Lieutenant Kelan Burke, a ’flameskin’ the enemies of Sol’s kind. Each chapter of the story is written from the perspective of one of the two, alternating as their tale unfolds.

I found it interesting seeing how the two see their same world and the historical incidents that have indirectly impacted on their lives. Despite their differences, the two are also incredibly similar in their views and reasoning for what they do. They both feel loyalty to their families and endeavour to honour those who are no longer with them in their actions; for Sol, it is her father, that has her following in his footsteps as a hunter an provider for the less fortunate and Kelan it is the loss of his mother that has him fighting against his inevitable fate.

Firefrost has several storylines running linear with one another, the tale of seeing through inbuilt presumptions is the main one but there is also a love story between the two. Their love reminded me initially of Shakespeare’s tragedy; Romeo and Juliet as I have previously said, Sol and Kelan are enemies by default of their birth and the hatred they both feel for one another’s kind. Inevitably, they are forced to realise that whilst there is indeed justification for their prejudices, the two are not the same as those they have previously encountered.

Time spent together allows the two to see each other clearly though of course being young, mistakes and presumptions hinder them both but unlike Romeo and Juliet? They are stronger together than apart and refuse to allow others to come between them.

Longley’s tale of how Flameskins were initially created is an interesting one and I would enjoy knowing more about it than what insight we are given in Firefrost. I don't want to tell you the story, it's so well done that it's worth learning for yourself but I imagine you too will want to know more. I have a feeling there is so much more than what we (and our two protagonists) are told. I can easily see from the story, just why there is such fear for Flameskins and why those who have encountered them react the way they do. Fear of the unknown after all breeds distrust and further fear and we often destroy those that we do not understand.

That problematic human trait is seen in those villagers who have been Sol’s friends and family when they initially meet Kelan and seeing Sol’s desperation to show those she loves that Kelan isn't like the others was heartbreaking to read. You can fully relate to her fury and fear that they cannot see what she sees in him, and I found myself cheering her on as she fought for what she believes in.

Her emotional growth along with Kelan’s is refreshing and I enjoyed reading their story unfold - especially when things were extremely hard for them both. Longley doesn't make it easy for the two of them both in their survival physically and emotionally - so often in other books what is supposed to be ’gritty’ is far from it and it lacks a realism that is still a necessity for a fantasy novel.

Not in Firefrost.

Sol maybe a huntress and Kelan may have fire in his fingertips but winter is their enemy and they struggle to survive. There's nothing in their traps to eat, and Kelan is afraid that fire will inevitably consume him as he's running out of time to still be himself - everything that could go wrong for them, does and everyone who could possibly come between them? Does.

Firefrost is a wonderful story and an excellent introduction to this series and I am really glad I read this first book. I am certain the series will be a firm favourite and for those as the ’blurb’ says who enjoys the tales of Maas and Tahir. Camille Longley’s name definitely belongs alongside these fan favourites and I’m sure there will be many more tales from the mountains and forests of this new fantasy world.

One of the sweetest, NA "enemies-to-lovers" fantasy romances I've read lately!

From the first few words, I was hooked into Camille Longley's world. Firefrost's world, where people with pyrokinetic abiliities are treated as monsters (and so they become monsters), is as intricate as it is believable. The characters are grounded and defendable, even when we can see they're wrong in their convictions.
The slow burn from enemies to lovers between Kelan, the Flameskin lieutenant and Sol, the hardened huntress who is in denial of her own nature is done so well, you find yourself immensely wrapped up in the tribulations of these characters. You just want them to be happy and safe together, damn it! The romance is on the sweet side (mostly fade to black) but although I'm used to reading more explicit scenes in fantasy romances, I felt that it was the right choice for the characters and for the vibe of the book in general. All the emotions and high stakes were there, anyway, so you don't really feel like something is missing.
There are a lot of things happening throughout the course of this book, and at some point you do get a bit "okay, what now? what fresh hell is this?" as you witness the MCs jumping from trouble to trouble. But the conclusion (no spoilers) is very satisfying and, if anything, leaves you wanting more.
I'd happily return to this world for more adventures!
P.S. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for offering a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

4.2/5 ☆ = 5

In a world filled with war and magic, we follow Sol - a hunter/mage - and Kelan - a flameskin. Even though they're on the opposing side of the brutal war between humans and flameskins, they have to work together to travel across the Ulve Mountains. Their lives depend on cooperation. Secrets are uncovered, the hunter has become the prey and their lives will never be the same again.

The book is filled with a lot of room for the characters to grow, as well as some action scenes. At first, the book dragged for a bit during the start but got way better at the end. There was also a lot of repetition in the plot, which made it a bit boring at times. But at least the end was good. Honestly, I sometimes feel like the ending was a bit rushed. However, it also kind of wound up perfectly at the end.

Moreover, the world-building was a bit lacking. Of course, the whole war and between the humans and flamskins, and their struggles were definitely well written. However, why did the war really start? What created the stigma towards the flameskins? What are the different creatures? Obviously, this is a prequel. It's just introducing us to this new world. Yet, I would have liked to travel through the world and learn more. More about the different cultures and etc. However, I will say that the author was amazing at giving clues which would be vital by the end. A great buildup of tension!

I absolutely fell in love with both Kelan and Sol. Headstrong Sol and complex Kelan, who was practically raised to hate each other. But their character development, oh the development! I love how their relationship grew as they began to finally trust each other. What can I say, I do love a good enemies-to-lovers, and this book delivered just that! The romance was definitely swoon-worthy.

The focus was mainly on Sol and Kelan's relationship, which I understand. Yet it dragged the opportunity to have a more engaging and creative plotline. Moreover, secrets were unveiled and the characters learned more about themselves. However, after a revelation, things seemed to be just normal. It was almost no big deal. I really wished the author dug deeper into Sol's ancestry.

In conclusion, I found myself enjoying the story a lot. This prequel was a pretty good buildup for the upcoming series, and it definitely got me excited for the Flameskin Chronicles! I got my hands on the novella Flamecursed, so I'm looking forward to reading it soon!

Over and out. -Nora <3

This book centered on the romance between Sol and Kelan, an enemies to lovers theme. That part of the story was pretty interesting, although I do think their romance progressed rather quickly, but I attributed that to their long time together.
What I would have loved to find out more about was what made them enemies. I knew the gist of what started the war but it would have been nice to know why the King did what he did. Maybe that will be explained later on in the series.
I enjoyed this book and I definitely want to continue the series and see what happens in their future.

(8/24/2020) Thank you to Netgalley for an e-arc copy of this novel. (4.5 stars)

Firefrost is a great action-packed adventure with a great enemies to lovers romance. The book has two protagonists and has a dual POV structure. We have Sol, a mountain huntress from Hillerod and Kelan, a flameskin warrior. The continent of Nordby is plagued by war and terror, stemming from King Anton Bruun's execution of his flameskin wife and daughter. Others across the continent, especially the Tokkens, have taken up arms against the flameskins, vowing utter annihilation of their race in order to prevent the burning of their lands. The novel shows how internalized prejudices and war can destroy nations and peoples, leaving countless innocent victims both within and outside of the armies.

I really loved the magic system of Firefrost. Flameskins are beings with magical fire powers; these powers manifest themselves because of pyra, a seemingly demonic that is able to possess flameskins after excessive use of their powers. Pyra have a penchant for destruction and chaos and feed on anger and other negative emotions. These aspects of pyra ultimately scare non-Flameskins and they harbor extreme prejudice against flameskins. The only way to keep them at bay is by not using powers and/or using an emberstone to extinguish the pyra's presence. Mages can also use emberstones in order to use fire magic; however excessive use of emberstones leads to mages becoming emotionally extinguished (emotionally blunted). There is also mentions of powers granted by the goddess Maja to the "saints" of Nordby.

The character development for Sol was great. Her feelings towards Flameskins changes drastically throughout the novel and we see her overcome what horrible ideologies she was taught. The great thing about the novel is that there is no purely good or purely evil character. Each has their faults and many are just victims of their environment. But we get to see both Sol and Kelan grow past their faults. They are both desperate to live a life of somewhat normalcy but are both used as tools. But in each other, they find the belonging they always wanted. The romance was heartbreaking and sweet. Both Kelan and Sol struggle with their emotions and it was nice to see how the romance developed in tandem with their development.

I only docked a point because there was a lot of redundancy in the beginning of the novel and it took me a little bit of chugging along to get through around the first 20%. After that it was super action packed and didn't let up for a second (much to the chagrin of Sol and Kelan).

For future novels, I hope to see some kind of resolution to the war in the future because it ends somewhat abruptly. I also want to see more worldbuilding and learn more about the other three kingdoms of Nordby outside of Tokkedal and Cassia as well as different races like the dryads. There is a lot of potential for this universe that Longley has created and I can't wait to see what she has in store next!

This book drags you in right from the start and features two very different characters with the classic trope enemies to lovers. This epic story features love, loss, and adventure. Some of the plot twists are predictable, not all, but some are not and keep you asking for more.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me early access to Firefrost! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is a book about Adventure, Fate, War, Love, Family, Destiny, and Heritage. As I've seen several other people say this book is binge worthy! Once I picked it up I didn't want to put it down. I adored Kelan and Sol's enemy to lover's relationship. It was beautifully written. All in all, I loved everything about this book. From the magic system to the politics. The world is so detailed I could picture myself right there alongside the characters. The characters were very well written and as far as I could see there were no plot holes. Everything flowed together nicely and linked back up.

I give this book five stars and I can't wait to continue Sol and Kelan's story! #Firefrost #NetGalley

Two people were destined to be together, yet doomed from the start.
In Firefrost by Camille Longley, we witness a few ugly human characteristics play out in a fictional fantasy setting. Sol is a girl born in a small mountain community and is led to believe that the “Flameskin” people are evil from birth, long before they even begin to display their affinity for fire. Kelan is a boy born with what he feels is a curse – the ability to wield fire. He agrees that it’s a dangerous trait, but he can’t help how he was born. It’s immediately clear that they’re both born and raised to be enemies without a chance at civility between them.

Sol and Kelan cross paths when Sol, posing as a man, is leading a princess and her guards through the dangerous snowy mountains. Known to the princess and army men as “Hunter”, Sol is their leader on the dangerous journey because of her expertise in the mountains. Her status in the village was once held by her father. Since the passing of her father, Sol has been the provider for her family and thus poses as her father to keep the job.

We are human first. We’re not as different as we think.
A common theme throughout the book is Kelan’s desire to be seen as a human and not a demon. There are many Flameskins who have committed tragic offenses against villagers; yet, there are terrible humans who have murdered their people as well. The basic nature to protect their own by harming others actually makes them the same while they’d like to believe they’re very different.

The build-up of Sol and Kelan’s love worked well because it took natural stages. At first they were just civil with each other for survival. Then they started to warm up to each other and became allies. Friendship and love built upon those stages. It wasn’t a quick jump to love that we tend to see in YA books. Thereafter, Camille Longley provides multiple stages of conflict among Kelan and Sol. Love is never easy after all.

I enjoyed this story of love, danger, and compromise very much. Sol and Kelan work hard to see past what they were raised to believe. It’s even harder for them to try to influence their own family and friends. Needless to say, trying to end a war between Sol’s people and the Flameskins seems impossible but necessary. In Firefrost nothing is every easy, and no step that is taken comes without a personal price to Sol and Kelan.

Firefrost is a really good debut novel with excellent writing and a great storyline. I always loved enemies to lovers storyline. This one's about two people forced against each other by war. Sol's and Kelan's characters were very great and looking forward to reading more about them in the sequel.

Sol is a huntress pretending to be a man to help her queen cross the mountains, Kelan is a soldier for a group of people overcome with fire demons.

This is the epitome of a haters to lovers story and I adored it. This book does a wonderful job of explaining what the stakes are in a situation, and then taking them through to their conclusion. There is no shying away from death, casualties of war, or hiding the way that organizations will work until their goal is achieved.

I found both Sol and Kelan incredibly compelling. Their backgrounds do a wonderful job of shaping who they are, what they can do, and how they react to everything around them. There are some twists and turns in this book that I never would have expected, and some that I did but still really enjoyed.

I really did enjoy this book. It took about a quarter of the way through to really pick up for me but once it did I couldn’t put it down. As it were, I read 84% the first day before I decided 2am was late enough. Then devoured the rest when I woke up. I love the concept behind the magic and class differences but I would really like more exploration of that. This is a very character driven plot with very little background history, which will not work for some people. It’s also very romance heavy which I actually really enjoyed but also that may not be for everyone either. There was definitely action and battling and so much tension though that you were brought back from the ‘aww’ to the very real problem that they were being hunted and in a constant state of fear. I loved Sol and her loyalty. She was a survivor. I loved Kelan and how passionate he was. I’m definitely interested to see how the rest of this series goes considering this seems to be a prequel of sorts. I’d recommend this to anyone who likes a fresh fantasy concept with an enemies to lovers romance.

I absolutely love enemies-to-lovers trope, there is no way I was missing out on this book.

The world-building was pretty decent, not overcomplicated, the concept of pyra and how it overcomes a person was an interesting one to explore. The same could be said about the style of writing, it was refreshing and I flew through the book. The plot was intriguing and I couldn't predict its direction, which is a great pro for me.

The romance was a bit rushed and it was difficult to find it believable in the beginning, but I liked the characters and it was a great adventure to read.

I'm not sure why, but this book gives me Elisa Kova's vibes.

It was a great read and I can see myself picking up the sequel.

Firefrost introduces us to a world in the midst of a war. We're introduced to Sol, a young huntress who comes from a small village and just wants to help provide food for her family. Kelan is a solider, a man that has the unique ability to control fire, and he's managed to keep control the powers from overtaking him. Due to unique circumstances, they're tossed together in the middle of the snowy mountains. To find out more, you'll have to read the story for yourself!

I think the premise and the world behind Firefrost is really interesting. Those were what made me download the book after reading the description. I loved discovering more about the world as I was reading. I loved the world building that we did get from the story, and I wanted to know more about the magic system and the world itself. It seems that this is a prequel to other stories, which I wasn't aware of when I first picked up the book, so I'm hoping we can learn more about the world in the next books.

The romance, for me, felt extremely rushed. I knew from the summary that this was an enemies to lovers story, but it felt like the transition between those two states was too abrupt. I would have liked to see more character development that led to that change in feelings for them. There was a lot of focus on their survival, and there was a lot of the book that revolved around them hiking from one place to another. The journeying chapters were often slower and more repetitive than some of the more action-filled chapters, but I felt that all of the chapter were short enough that the story didn't drag, despite the time that they spent walking between locations. I also enjoyed having both Sol and Kelan's perspectives and being able to see inside of their heads.

Many thanks to the author and NetGalley for the free copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book is absolutely perfect!! I devoured it and desperately want more!! I feel like Kelan and Sol's story isn't over and I so hope there is more.

This was quite the refreshing read! Firefrost takes us into a world of Flameskins and Tokken soldiers who are at war with each other. And among this war and politics we see Sol, a young girl trying to find a way to feed her family and Kelan, a Flameskin soldier. By unexpected events these two end up alone in the mountain ranges amidst the snow. Now they must try to survive.
I really loved the pull and push of feelings that comes with a haters to lovers trope! The characterization was really good and so was the pacing. I loved to see Sol struggle with what she had been led to believe all her life and what she was actually experiencing. Much of the things in the book could be related to real life issues and that representation was much needed.
I don't usually like to read Fantasy that revolves around war or politics a lot, hence this was a surprisingly good read!

The concept of this book was interesting and as I got further into the book, I connected more with the characters. Classic enemies to lovers but I was able to understand the validity in each of their viewpoints. Sol is a huntress who learned important skills from her father. Kelan is a Fireskin but not what anyone would except. He is incredibly strong to resist what should have overtaken him long ago. The story was well paced and side characters added to my enjoyment.

As a slow burn trope lover, I APPROVE OF THIS BOOK!!! I felt like my heart was being squeezed from all the feelings this book gave me all throughout the book. I was literally screaming!!!! You know what reminds me of this book? Six of Crows’ Nina and Matthias!! It’s like reading about their story and their journey to finding a safe place except it’s super detailed, extra action and adventure, and SUPER romance filled.

As a fantasy AND a romance lover, I really liked this book. But just a reminder for those who doesn’t like a lot of romance on their fantasy book, this might not be the best one for you. (IT IS FOR ME THOUGH)

Reading this book also felt like I was reading a whole series. Except for the one main conflict, there were so many (maybe too many?) other conflicts in it that were solved almost instantly. I think I prefer less conflict with a longer time before they’re solved (more exciting!!!)

All in all, this is a great read!!

Thank you so much to BooksGoSocial via NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review! All opinions are my own.

So we have a classic enemies to lovers story, set against the snowy and magical Ulve Mountains. The Flameskins are a race of people who coexist with a demon called a pyra, and once their soul is fully consumed they essentially turn into demons. The nonmagical people and army of Tokkedal are attempting to eradicate this army of fire demons, a war which was been ongoing. With atrocities like cutting out the hearts of, and then burning flameskins being commonplace, the hatred and prejudice and fear of the nonmagical citizens runs deep.

The world building was really quite well done. We learn all about the snowy and inhospitable mountains, their legends, and the people who inhabit them. How they live, what they eat, how they feel in regards to the ongoing war. The political aspects got a bit confusing because even though a Tokken King was mentioned several times, a queen ended up being in power? Other than that I enjoyed the world quite a bit, especially the place at the end. Cough no spoilers.

The magic includes the Flameskins who have their demons, or mages that have similar skills but must use a stone to achieve them. There is so much intricate detail about the pyras and mages and their respective curses, that I was pretty impressed for the first 40% of the book. Even the history and prejudices and course of the wars were pretty interesting, as were all the ways in which the fire could be used. From firesharing to Saint Katerine and her powers, there were a very wide range.

The characters are a bit of another story. Sol is her village’s huntress, and ends up on a confusing journey of survival with a Flameskin commander named Kelan. They have to rely on each other for guidance, food, warmth, and emotional support while more or less having to escape both armies and everyone else they meet. Their goals change as they go, but safety is hard to find in a world where there is no place to be together.

Can they trust each other? Should they hate each other or jump into a bedroll? Can Kelan fight off his Pyra and stay human despite the fact that Sol is a bit of a moron and forces him to use it all the time? The relationship and inner monologue between them got so repetitive during the 35-70% part of the book that I just had to skim at times. There were no new revelations and yet every few pages I had to read about their very repetitive feelings and confusion towards each other. 1.5 stars docked right there, I would have just preferred a shorter book or to spend those pages maybe hearing more stories about the mountains, the Saints for sure, or literally anything else.

Kelan was a pretty interesting and complex character, while Sol just drove me nuts until she got her sh!t together and figured out which side to be on. I get that watching your pa cut out a Flameskin’s heart would have lasting effects, but it took her a very long time to come off her high horse and work cooperatively with him to survive.

I was on an easy 5⭐ course until I hit the middle of the book doldrums that some of the early reviews mentioned. There was still action going on but just so much repetition. This looks to be a prequel book to the rest of the series, taking place 100ish years before the next book occurs, so there was just no reason for it. I once again encourage YA authors to give their readers some credit and back off the repetition.

Fans of enemies to lovers, found families, adopted families, fire magic, superstition and lore, keep an eye out for this one! It releases September 21st!

Firefrost is the prequel to a new fantasy series called Flameskin Chronicles set in a world where some people possess a pyra, kind of a fire spirit that give them powers but that also controls their actions if they let the pyra take over their souls. I found this premise very interesting and I also discovered that it includes an enemies to lovers romance which is my favorite trope of all type so I knew right away that I was going to love this story.

Sol is a huntress that has to begin a journey through the mountains to escort a princess whose marriage will guarantee the safety of Sol’s home. On the road, they come across a group of flameskin, the people that threaten to destroy everything that Sol knows and loves. They decide to attack but an avalanche kills everyone except from Sol and Kelan, a flameskin that fights to not give his pyra the control and lose himself in the process. They are forced to work together if they want to survive the cold of the mountain winter and Sol soon realizes that, maybe, Kelan is not her enemy.

Firefrost has two main characters, there aren’t many characters apart from them that have a very important role in the story. The two of them have a lot of depth thanks to all of the internal conflicts that they have to face throughout their journal across the mountains. They also suffer a huge evolution because of having met each other.

My favorite was, without a doubt, Kelan. I think that his psychology was really interesting, he is always fighting his own nature, this fire that lives inside him and that wants to take away his change to do good. I grew very fond of him and he has become one of my favorite characters ever that is going to stay in my heart for a long time.

Then we have Sol who is the one that evolves the most, in my opinion. She grew up in a place that encouraged the hatred towards the flameskin and she has never considered that what her parents told might not be the truth. The questions that she asks herself plus all of this moments in which she doubts her family, specially her father, give her a lot of complexity. I connected pretty quickly with her, I think she is very strong and that she has a lot of perseverance.

Firefrost is a character driven story. It mainly focuses on the relationship that appears between the two main characters, their feelings and internal conflicts. This doesn’t mean that nothing happens or that the author doesn’t develop the worldbuilding. On the contrary, the action scenes and the survival have the same importance than the slower scenes that give the characters more depth. I really enjoyed this combination and I think that the balance is just right.

One of the things that surpised me the most in this book was how much it hooked me from the very beginning. I don’t know exactly how long it took me to finish it but I think that I didn’t last me more than a day and a half. I found something within the pages that kept me inside them without the possibility of stopping.

As I have already mentioned, this book contains an enemies to lovers romance with has become in the past few years my favorite trope. The romance is the main focus of the story so, if you don’t usually enjoy romances, this might not be your book. I personally love to find books like this one when I am in the mood. Sol y Kelan start off the book hating each other, specially Sol. She thinks that Kelan is a demon but feelings start to grow between the two of them. I think that the romance is not rushed or anything like that, the more intimate scenes are just beautiful and I loved their relationship.

The worldbuilding is very different from what I usually encounter in this kind of books. It is explained enough to understand but it also leaves some topics without answers so I think that they are going to get explored in the rest of the series. What I found the most interesting is the pyras and the fire magic, it is a concept that I am looking forward to exploring more. It is true that, maybe, the world is not developed as much as the romance, for example, but I understand it and it doesn’t bother me at all.

The ending is closed, the story of Sol and Kelan finish with the last line of the book because, from what I understand, the next installment called Flameskin is going to follow another bunch of characters several years later. I can’t wait for it to be published.

I read this thanks to NetGalley.

Well, if you like a good dose of fantasy - YA, I would say - then you'll have a lot of fun here. Sol is a huntress, Kelan is a soldier, they are on opposite sides in a war to the end - so, yes, of course, blah, blah, blah.

The fun is in the getting there, and the plot twists. It started out and I thought "Oh, yeah, this is this kind of book", and then suddenly we switch to something else and something else. So many ideas here, interesting world building, and plenty of room for more books from the world Longley has created.

Firefrost alternates between Sol of the Saints and Leland of the Flameskins. Sol is the huntress of her village that is entrusted to safely see Lady Isabella to her fiancé. Leland, a recently promoted lieutenant is ordered to assassinate Lady Isabella.

A major elemental disaster occurs leaving Sol and Leland the sole survivors. Sol and Leland try to survive the mountains and winter until they can get to safety.

Sol and Leland come from two different spectrums of society. Throughout the novel you see the burning hatred caused by the upbringing of discrimination from Sol and Leland's cultures towards the way they treat each other.

I was impressed to see how much growth both characters made throughout the entire book.

Sol was funny, quirky and was really independent, she didn't need anyone to save her. I really enjoyed that she wasn't the sappy lovesick one in the relationship.

Book was great, constant action every single chapter, Loved it.

I absolutely loved this book and it reminded me so much of one of my favourite books that I had to go back and re-read it! This is definitely one that I will be buying to put on my bookshelf to read again and again as it was just so good to read. There is violence, betrayal, love and vengeance, it has everything a good fantasy novel should have in it.

My only criticism is that some of the book seemed to be breezed over where it could've been made longer to really enhance the story.

Amazing book and I can't wait to read more from this author

Thank you to the author and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy in return for an honest review!

Sol is a huntress. To feed her family, she takes on a mission: guide the lady Isabella and her guards through the treacherous winter pass in the mountains. Kelan is a Flameskin, able to wield fire magic, but possessed by a pyra – a demon waiting for its chance to take control over him. Sol and Kelan are enemies in an age-old war, but when fate throws them together, they have to depend on each other to survive the journey through the mountains. As they learn more about each other, they start to question everything they thought they knew.

Firefrost is the prequel to the upcoming Flameskin Chronicles series. It serves as an introduction to the world, but I assume you won’t have to read this one to understand the “actual” series later on. That being said, I can really recommend this book.

I am intrigued by the setting in this book. The kingdom, the neighboring countries, the mountains,… But also the people: there are mages, Flameskins, mentions of dryads, ice wolves, and so on. I wouldn’t have minded more information about these things though. In fact, it took me some time to figure out what the different factions were, what a pyra is, what the difference between a mage and Flameskin is, and what the politics are. It all becomes clear later on in the book (except maybe for the political elements), but it would have been nice to have a bit more world building earlier on.

The reason why there wasn’t that much world building is probably the fact that Firefrost is very much focused on the romance between Sol and Kelan. Which I didn’t mind at all. I mean, I knew it would be heavy on the romance and that’s why I picked this book. But the romance was also cute and I loved reading about these two characters falling for each other. The way they fought their feelings because of prejudices, and how they overcame the latter.

I loved both main characters. Kelan’s struggle with his pyra was hard to read at times, because he’s clearly a great person who was forced into a role he never wanted. He might be a Flameskin, but he never felt like he belonged with them. It took me a bit longer to warm up to Sol, because she was very headstrong and set in her ways, but I ended up loving her just as much as I did Kelan. She went through quite a journey as well. From idolizing her father to realizing he might not have been as perfect as she’d always thought. Which is something we all learn about our parents when we grow up, albeit not to this degree (I hope!).

Sol and Kelan did fall in love fairly quickly, though. I had expected it would take at least 200 pages before they realized/admitted their mutual attraction, but – due to time skips in the story – that happened a lot sooner. That doesn’t mean the rest of the book was smooth sailing and honeymoon vibes. Oh no. Things went wrong, threats appeared all over the place and Sol and Kelan were forced apart. So don’t expect some slow-burn romance that ends with both characters finally confessing their feelings. Instead, the second part of Firefrost focused on the struggles they have to go through to be together.

I have one tiny remark about their romance and the way it was written. There are several instances where things get a bit heated between them (pun intended). They’re always interrupted, but this creates the impression there will be some sexy times later on. Except… that never happens. It’s not that I *demand* smut, but with the way their interactions were written, I was kind of waiting for it. But that’s probably just my dirty mind! So don’t worry, Firefrost is perfectly suitable for younger readers!

All in all, Firefrost is a great book that made me curious about the rest of the series. If you’re looking for a YA fantasy novel with a heavy focus on enemies-to-lovers romance, I can recommend this one. You can find it in stores on September 21st!

From enemies to lovers, Sol - Huntress/Mage and Kelan - Flameskin, must find a way to be together and end the war.

It’s hard when two people don’t want to be what they are and hate each other... at least in the beginning...

"I hate you," she muttered, clenching her teeth and willing tears to stop. How had she let herself cry in front of him? She wrapped her arms around her body. Now that she wasn’t wearing the emberstone manacle, the cold bit into her, nipping her uncovered face and fingers.

"Fire isn’t evil. We use fire to cook, to light and warm our homes. Without fire, humankind wouldn’t survive."

"But it is evil to use it like this. To be tainted by it. To let it enter the blood."

"I won’t apologize for saving your life."
"It’s better to die untainted than to let the poison take you."
"Maybe we aren’t so different," Kelan said softly. " We’re both afraid of what fire can do to us."

Sol and Kelan have to keep each other alive through the winter mountain pass after a dreadful accident. I’m doing so they find out about each other and ultimately find, they want the same things.

She blinked rapidly, fighting back the tears. Then she looped one arm around Kelan’s neck and pulled him in, meeting his lips with hers. His lips were hot, and kissing him was like tasting the first scents of spring after a long winter, it was the heady exhilaration of the hunt. He held her close, wrapping his arms around her waist, and the warmth of his body enveloped her. She pressed herself against him, hating how much she wanted his warmth, how much she wanted him.

This story is character driven and not much works building, which is fine. I mean you CAN feel every bit of the cold and killings they go through but not much else. Either way, I very much loved Sol and Kelan and I look forward to their next adventures!

The first thing I can mention that I liked was how fast paced and easy it was too read. You kind of flew through it but not too fast. I also love the Enemies to Lovers trope, and this book didn’t let me down on that part.
Though sometimes I wish the author didn’t make the characters realize their feelings so quickly. I want it to grow during a much longer time. But Longley still did a great job with the trope.

The Flameskins are a kind of people in this story that are born with fire in their blood, a Pyra. And when they get older they give in to this power and let it take over their mind. They get possessed. The Pyra has a voice that speaks to them in their head and all it wants to do is basically to kill and set things on fire. I think it was a pretty interesting concept, even if it got a bit annoying at times.
Sol have a hard time accepting her slowly growing feelings for Kelan. Because her dad always told her that the Flameskins are terrible people. And in one part of the book it’s quite ridiculous how many times she goes from calling Kelan a “Demon” to on the next page tell him that she didn’t mean it and of course he is human just like her. That went on for a while and it actually made me laugh.
I enjoyed Kelan’s character much more than Sol’s, because she got pretty annoying at times. Neither of them are perfect though, both makes morally grey choices during the story. But it makes it all a lot more interesting.
The first half of the book was great, but I was waiting and waiting to see more of the war. Because as many YA fantasy books there’s a lot of focus on the romance. And I’m not complaining, sometimes you just want more of other things in the story too.
And that was exactly what we got in the second half. I mean, there was something happening almost all the time. Especially to our main characters and at one point I was thinking “Please give them a break and let them breath.”. In the second half we also truly got to see some character development and I enjoyed that so much. I even started to like Sol more.
In the end I would have been happy if we had gotten some more detailed explanations for a couple of things. But it isn’t something that bothers me honestly.

I am not sure what else I can say. I’m sure I’ll figure out a lot more as soon as I post this.
Over all it’s a great book that I recommend if you want a good, fast paced fantasy with enemies to lovers, grey morally choices, a lot of fire and to just have a good time reading.
The more I think about this book since I finished it, the more I realize how much I enjoyed it.

If you’re a fan of enemies to lovers and romance set in a fantasy setting, then you’ll love this book.

Thank you to Netgalley for approving me for an Earc for this book.

I loved this story, it was a classic enemies to lovers story without too much of a cliché. The story opens with action and enough intrigue to keep you intrigued and keep reading in one sitting. I loved the two main characters from which there are 2 POVs. They both have internal struggles which develop throughout the story, you really get a feel for each of their troubles with the opposite kind but also how they’re dealing and learning to appreciate each others troubles, the author really has spent time creating the character arcs and making you feel for each of them and also route for their budding romance and bid for freedom.

The story is pretty fast paced and flows really nicely, if you’re looking for a relatively quick read that’s easy to follow then I would definitely recommend this book. There’s a few action scenes which aren’t super long but the story moves and then there’s another which I don’t mind, especially when the final fight scene is quite epic (as it is in this one).

The world building is done well as well, I think this helps with allowing the story to flow well as you don’t have to struggle to get your mind around where they are or the magic they possess because it’s too complex. There were some plot points that I didn’t see coming toward to end of the book which is so refreshing as I can usually tell where a story is going, but they’re kept tight within the writing and was a genuine surprise when it came to those moments. I cant wait for the next instalments and see where the story takes Sol and Kelan.

5 stars for Firefrost! I started this book late last night, and finished it this afternoon. It was such a fun read! Both of the main characters jumped off the page, and I instantly cared about what happened to them. I am so excited to continue reading about this world.

Completely binge-able new series that is part fantasy, part romance. This series reminds me of Victoria Aveyard's "Red Queen" series. Sol is a huntress who is a very strong female character stuck in the mountains of the Ulves after and avalance with Kelan, a Flameskin. This starts as a love-hate relationship; until the two learn there is more to each than what is on the surface.

Loved every page; completing in one day. This is definetley a series to keep on your radar.

I really enjoyed this! I love survival stories and Sol and Kelan making it through the snow and mountains and their many enemies was definitely exciting!

I felt a bit of Wicked Saints vibes from this and I loved that book so I'm not surprised I liked this as well. Sol is a capable girl and I admired how she perservered and pushed Kelan and herself through so many obstacles to get back to her family. She does have prejudices at first, but once she gets to know Kelan she begins to shift her thinking. You have to feel bad for the Fireskins at least a bit, they can't really control giving into the pyra demon inside them and to kill children because of how they're born is really terrible.

Most of the story is Sol and Kelan trying to survive against cold, lack of food, injuries, and being hunted. It feels like they can never be safe, but the romance that comes out of it was lovely. I like them as a couple and the way they both have a soft side for helping others.

The only part I didn't quite understand was the different races (?) I guess you'd call them. The Fireskins and mages and Tokken seem very similar but for having fire abilities. I'd like some clarification there if possible.

The ending wrapped up pretty well, so I'm wondering what the next book will be about. Looking forward to finding out!

I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

This was a definite roller coaster of emotions in this clean, fantasy, coming of age story. Our hero and heroine are on opposing sides of a war and must repeatedly face situations that force them to choose between their personal goals and their sense of duty and loyalty. There were some plot twist that I wish were more fully developed, but overall I really enjoyed this story.

This book had brought me to an amazing time with Sol and Kelan !!

Of course, while reading this book, I couldn't not think or Romeo and Juliet's story.
But this story literally ate me !! I couldn't stop my reading, until I had finished the book.

Kelan and Sol are enemies, well, at least their kind are ennemies, but little by little, they'll know how to appreciate each other's company. Together, they'll face a lot of challenges, and it won't be easy for them.

Kelan is a flameskin, inside him live an entity, his Pyra. Kelan is doing whatever he can, to keep his Pyra inside him, he refused to let him take control and lose himself, that's not what he want, even if it's something that is normal to do for his kind. But, he wants his own freedom, he want to make his own choice.

Sol is a huntress, she is escorting Princess Isabela, who is supposed to marry a Prince, that will help them during the battle with the Flameskins. But things won't go as planned.
Besides Kelan, Sol will start to ask herself what she should do, especially since she seems to like Kelan the more they are together.
But a part of her, can't betrayed her father by falling in love with Kelan. She'll have to make a decision, a one that can change everything for the both of them.
It's well known, that love is stronger than anything.

This book touched me very deeply, I was sad when I finished this book, because I really enjoyed reading their story.

I really enjoyed this story. I liked the world building and the magical elements. I liked Sol and Kelan. I got pretty invested in their story. It felt a little repetitive at times but they were on the run so they were bound to get caught. I liked surprise plot twists and turns the story took. All in all it was a fun read. I wish there was a sequel. Thank you for the opportunity

Firefrost is such a satisfying and wholesome book. I really enjoyed the story and the development of the main character's relationship, which often made me laugh out loud!

I don't know what the rest of the series is going to look like but I know I am excited for it.

Thanks to NetGallery for this ARC

Okay, this is an interesting one, I would say don't let my 3 stars detour you from this self published-ish YA. I actually looked this up and this got published thanks to a fairly successful Kickstarter, so that's awesome. It's also volume zero in a series that hasn't been released yet.

TLDR Tropes

- Enemies to Lovers
- Zutara Vibes"
- warring factions
- grey moral choices

In this world, regular humans live side by side with "flameskins"- humans who are born with extraordinary powers of flame- and pay for it by more or less having a demon slowly consume their identity.

Due to these creatures largely being a danger and the demons inside them lusting for blood, these flameskin are killed by humans, creating a cultural divide and what appears to be a war between these factions.

Sol is a human/mage huntress. Kelan is a flameskin. When they are both put in unprecedented danger, they must learn to understand each other and survive, together.

What was really cool and interesting about this is that it really presents some interesting questions to the reader- namely, if someone has a 100% chance of being evil, is it worth valuing their life when they are innocent? How do you judge this? Who can make that call?

Unfortunately, while the author absolutely explores these themes, there is limited world building in favor of a heavily character and romance focused arc, which would be fine, but I was much more interested in this surface level world than the characters. NOT because the characters were bad, but because the ideas presented were really cool!

I ultimately was left unsatisfied due to this, as well as how quickly the characters ended up falling for each other despite extremely strong feelings of prejudice and hatred. There was a pretty limited build up for that that left something to be desired.

But regardless, this is one ton watch yall! Keep an eye out for this author, I will be!

Full of fast paced action! I highly recommend this book!

I feel that the romance between Kelan and SOl was a little rushed, and would have liked to see if grow throughout the book.

In A Few Words: Immensely binge-able, competent and independent female-main-character, admirably sincere male-main-character, atmospheric setting, intriguing magic, not instant-love romance whew!, interesting other characters, heartwarming at times sad at times, bite-sized packed-with-adventure-feels perfect for a start to an entire series.

My Own (?) Synopsis: Sol is a hunter who, disguised as a man to fit the job’s requirement so she could bring food onto her family’s table, takes on a task to guide Lady Isabella and her entourage to the next kingdom, through forests and mountains this winter for a marriage alliance. On the way they come across and fight an army of enemy soldiers who wield fire demons as weapons, known as Flameskins. They win, taking that enemy’s sole survivor Lieutenant Kelan along. But an avalanche then buries Lady Isabella and her escorts, this time with only Sol as the sole survivor from her group along with Kelan. The two of them find themselves as reluctant companions who have to learn to trust and accept each other’s help while trying to survive and make it through the snow-covered pass. Eventually prejudices and walls between them are broken, and they find themselves having to face both new and familiar enemies together.

My Review:

Firstly, I think the cover is just stunning.

Right off the bat I understood this as a magic and adventures filled story, with the romance arc being enemies-to-lovers one, and I trusted it to entertain me based on those. It did. Very much. From the official synopsis though, I thought Lieutenant Kelan would be a much older man somehow, and I couldn’t help feeling amused at myself when I realized he was young because I suppose my expectation made sense, as even the more senior soldier in Kelan’s unit questioned his quick rise through the ranks which really was biased after all, since Kelan was the leader’s nephew.

Sol was capable and rational, but also believably a teenage girl who struggled with her newfound realizations that what she was told and taught about the so-called enemies might not be as simple as black and white or fair to be a sweeping general label; I think she was really one strong heroine. Kelan was a pleasant surprise in that he was not this sharp or sarcastic bad boy type that again, I somehow expected, but instead was warm and kind despite Sol’s harsh early judgments about him, and earnest in his efforts fighting against the fire demon (a pyra was what it was called)’s temptations and provocations; I liked him a lot and got an urge to protect this child like a coddling mother, ha. The interactions, which involved growing understanding and acceptance for each other was realistic, given their situations. I also enjoyed meeting, getting to know the other characters and learning about their stories, relationships and struggles. My favourite character if I have to choose, though, would be little Azalea.

Overall, I would recommend this book to most teens for sure, and to those who are just starting to dip their toes in the fantasy genre. It’s a bonus that it is a standalone so you won’t have the anxiety of impatiently waiting for the next book; it’s a good prequel to see the potential what’s to come in an upcoming series set in the same universe. The writing is good, the characters are able to stand on their own, and the story is an enjoyable read you might be able or even want to finish in a short time. Personally, I would pick up the next book if I get the chance. A four stars out of five read from me.

Good luck to the author for the rest of the series, as well as congratulations and thank you for this enjoyable read.

Thank you as well to Netgalley and the publisher, for the book’s digital version of advance reader copy. All opinions stated are my own.

Firesfrost is a hate to love story in which we follow our two main characters Sol and Kelan, who each are on different sides of war and how they try to stay together throughout it.
While I’m not a fan of books that mainly focus on romantic relationships, I could not stop reading this one. Headstrong Sol was instantly one of my favorite characters, and the racial biases she had against Kelan and how she slowly overcame them were utterly believably written. Especially since she went back and forth, fighting between her believes she was taught her whole life and the reality she is confronted with. It made it feel more real to me.
This story was fast paced as heck and while the first half was really immersive (I could imagine myself trudging through a snowy mountain while sitting on my balcony in 40°C weather) the second half, for me, was TOO fast paced. There was so much haphazard information reveal thrown in, which should have gotten more attention, but didn’t.
I also would have loved to see more insight into the development of certain characters’ relationships. Though I understand, since the focus was centered on Sol’s and Kelan’s relationship.
It has to be said that this book is the prequel to the Flameskin Chronicles, so it would be interesting to reread this when I’ve read the first book.
Overall I liked this book very much, it was an immersive and action-filled story.

“Firefrost” by Camille Longley follows Sol, a huntress and Kelan, a Flameskin. Sol is skilful when navigating the mountains and uses her talents to put food on the table for her family back home. Kelan lives with a pyra which pumps fire through his blood and threatens to possess him. He fights in the Flameskin army and is taught to destroy all who stand in his path. Sol and Kelan are brought together in a world which has declared them enemies when they must rely on each other to survive.

I found “Firefrost” fast paced and constantly stimulating to read. When it wasn’t developing deep insight into the characters or drastically transforming their relationships, this novel was literally throwing fireballs across the page. Packed with action, romance and fantasy, I was holding my breath the whole way through. I have to admit, it wasn’t particularly unique as far as YA fantasy goes and I’m not sure I’d commit to reading the rest of the series but the novel was entertaining nevertheless. Anyone keen on fire powers and survival in the snow can dive right into this beauty.

An enemies to lovers story of two amazing characters, Sol and Kelan. The chemistry between them was great with a story kept me on the edge of my seat. I gave it 5 stars!

Enemies to Lovers? Yes please. This was a fun and enjoyable read about two enemies who fall in love. There is romance, action, adventure, and betrayal. The events in the book are fast and this book's pacing is fast. Sol and Kelan were nice protagonist, with Sol being a strong female lead. I did enjoy the magical elements in the story and look forward to how the journey of these characters continue in the sequel.

I'm always a big fan of enemies to lovers, though this romance did feel fast - which is honestly my one holdout with this book in general. All of it felt fast. The events of Firefrost could have been two (maybe even three) books if they had spent more time building the plot and the world around them in deeper detail. That's a good thing, though, in the sense that this absolutely is a story where I want to know everything I can about the magic system and how the world ended up the way it was. I look forward to more stories revolving around flameskins, and I hope it gives this world a bit more resolution and a lot more inner-workings. The ending, though in some ways happy, didn't quite feel like a victory when considering every flameskin that *wasn't* in that lucky group we, as the readers, were focusing on.
I wish I could give half stars - I would call this 3.5 stars. It was an entertaining read and I am a big fan of the way this magic system functions. I just wish it hadn't felt as rushed.

This novel was enjoyable read, bringing two enemies together. Love, romance, action, adventure, betrayal all occur in this novel. Sol knows her way though the mountains, they are her home. Taking a group through the mountains, they run into the Flameskins, who want to put an end to Sol's mission. Kelan refuses to let his "demon" control him. Everyday he fights to stay in control. Kelan and Sol are enemies, despising what each represents, for both sides have killed each other. They wind up in a journey together, planning to part ways once they reach their destination, but neither expecting the feelings that would develop between them. Old prejudices begin to wash away, seeing that not everyone is evil because of their "skin". They will have many obstacles that they will have to overcome to be together, even their own worries. War is brewing and both just want to live in peace, but they will have to fight for it.
I received this novel from net galley and the publisher as an ARC. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing this arc in exchange for a fair and honest review.

A more mature YA fantasy that reminded me in places of Shelby Mahurin and C. J. Redwine (both of whom I love, so this is good), Firefrost is eminently bingeable. I'm not saying I didn't finish it in one night and stay up way too late, but I'm not saying I didn't not, either. The headstrong, capable heroine rescues her enemy out of a sense of morality and need, and the two proceed to slowly break down the barriers of a lifetime of prejudice and misinformation and reevaluate what makes a person human.

Bonus points for magic-that-isn't-magic and a romance that drives the plot but isn't the only plot point.

This was a page-turner. I read it in one sitting. If you like an enemy to lovers' story this one is an excellent read. It started out with two young people Sol and Kelan on opposite sides of a war. Both believing the other is a monster. But when circumstances forced them to rely on each other for survival they begin to slowly understand that they were not so differnt.. Sol was known only as Hunter to Kelan. She was strong-willed and fought with herself over her interest in Kelan. Kelan in his own right was strong-willed and fought to not be possessed by his inner fire. Through their struggles to survive the cold of a mountain pass, the attempt by bandits to take Sol and kill Kelan their feeling for each other begin to emerge. Two very strong characters forged a union in spite of differences, wars, and what others expected of them. This story held my attention right to the last sentence. I am looking forward to the sequel and finding out more about Sol and how things turned out for her and Kelan.

Engaging from the beginning, it starts like a 'road movie' but with traveling on foot through snow and mountains. I do enjoy it when circumstances, usually extreme ones, force enemies to work together. "We're both afraid of what fire can do to us"

Sol is practical, straightforward, bossy and tough and you admire her strength. You can't help liking Kelan from the get go, he is the nicer one and more accepting. He also has a dry sense of humor.

Kelan's symbiotic relationship with the pyra is tenuous and I like how the inner turmoil is depicted. How the demon of fire taunts him and he fights it from totally possesing him. Also how Sol's conflict of her beliefs and her hate with actually liking Kelan is shown. This is a budding, confusing relationship, tinged with melancholy and the companionship of hardship.

The interchangeable 3rd person POVs have a straight to the point narrative with clear pictures of what each protagonist is experiencing. And you'll love those little details that makes the images so clear.

Emotionally charged, with wonder action, suspenseful and described beautifully (there are so many elegant picturesque sentences). Except for the growing feelings of the protagonists which you see coming a mile away, it is entertainingly unpredictable.

There is emphasis on how prejudice is not necessarily a fixed state and change to acceptance. Violence brings more violence, the wrongness of war, how it brings out the worst in people, how devastating it is for all sides.

An against the odds adventurous story. Heart-wrenching and wonderfully optimistic at the same time. With a great ending that satisfies but still promises more.

3.5

Sol and Kelan are the only survivors in a mission gone wrong. Unfortunately, they hate and want to kill each other. Over the course of the book, feelings turn to love and soon they will do anything to stay together.
I started off enjoying the book. I never go into a book with incredibly high expectations which lowers my chances of being disappointed. I enjoyed Kelan and Sol's relationship initially. Enemies to lovers is my favourite trope! But they so suddenly went from enemies to lovers. There was no falling in love and slowly seeing the other person, not as an enemy, but as a friend. I felt like I got whiplash from how quickly it changed.
Another thing that I noticed was her complete lack of pronouns. Paragraphs would be: Kelan couldn't believe it... Kelan pulled out his sword... Kelan fought his way out... Does that make sense? She just kept repeating names over, and over again. It would've flowed better to exchange quite a few of those with pronouns.
The writing wasn't bad. The characters weren't horrible. It was an overall enjoyable read for me, but it hasn't become my new favourite book. I might pick up the sequels.

Thank you NetGalley for the eArc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Sol is a huntress who is doing what she can to ensure her village survives the wrath of the flameskin army.

Kelan is a Lieutenant in the flamskin army who has spent his whole life fighting what he is.

Sol and Kelan are enemies from opposite sides of a war that started years ago. Due to unforeseen circumstances they must depend on each other to survive. As Sol begins to question her beliefs, Kelan becomes desperate to fight the fire that threatens to consume him. Together they will face many hardships that will have an effect on both sides of the war.

What I Liked about this book

The concept - I loved the idea of the flameskin's and how their powers work.
Kelan - He is my favourite character in this book. he is a complex character and is completely devoted to Sol.
The world - even though this book is centered on the flameskin's there are other magical creatures at work as well. This book mainly focuses on explaining the world and setting the scene for the next book.
What I Didn't like
The pacing of the book - the story seemed to jump from place to place very quickly in the second half of the book
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I would recommend this book to anyone who likes books such as Throne of Glass.

Firefrost is a young adult romantic fantasy set in an interesting new world. A young woman guides a princess through the mountains where she and her father hunted, while a young man fights to save his people from genocide while trying to resist the dark urges that come with using his magic. The world is well built out in bits and pieces that don't interfere with the character-driven story or overall plot. This feels like an introduction to a new world full of many potential stories - I'm excited to read more of them.

Kelan is a Flameskin lieutenant and Sol is a Tokken huntress.

The Flameskins are fire wielders that have something in them called pyri. The pyri take over the magic wielder eventually and they become one. And they live to destroy.
Some choose to numb their magic with an emberstone and don't allow the unity, so they don't wield their fire at all.
There is a war between the Tokken army and the Flameskins. Kelan and Sol are natural enemies, as it's all they have ever known. Can they change the course of their future and stop the war by uniting? Or will their friendship mean they will always be on the run from all sides?

This was an interesting read and not like most enemies to friends stories.
I found it to be relatable to some current events, while remaining in a fantasy world, which made it a bit lighter and an easy read.

This was beautifully written and had the perfect amount of romance for me.
The descriptions of the mountains, woods and many weeks of travelling through snow, were captivating and kept me intrigued throughout the story.
I do wish the ending was a bit longer as I felt it was a bit rushed, but it was overall a very satisfying read.

I was provided an Advanced Reader Copy by the publisher #BooksGoSocial and Netgalley for an honest review.

Firefrost by Camille Longley was an extremely engaging story; I couldn't put the book down. Longley has developed very likable characters, both the good guys and the bad, whose life situations make you yearn for a better, more understanding world. This first installment can be read as a stand alone but appears to be an introduction in to the world she has built.

Sol is a huntress tasked with leading her party across the treacherous mountain pass. She relies on this job to feed her family who live in a small village on the mountain. Sol must be wary of the Flameskin army, a race who can use fire as a means of weaponry, healing, and strength.

Kelan is a Flameskin who has been fighting his human nature. He refused to let the fire consume him and his mind. He fears what he can become.

Sol and Kelan are two individuals on separate sides of an intense war. They are thrown together and must learn to work with one another in order to survive. Can Sol overcome her distrust for what Kelan is? Can Kelan overcome his inner demons and save himself?

When I began this book, I was excited to read it. The blurb was intriguing, the cover was beautiful, and it was a fantasy. It ticked all the boxes for me!

The worldbuilding in this novel was great. I loved how Longley began the novel by jumping straight into the action, without setting up the world. I thought this was different and it got me hooked right from page one. There were times within the first couple of chapters that I was confused by the world because there was no explanation. However, this was rectified the longer I kept reading.

I loved how Longley switched perspectives between Sol and Kelan. I love dual perspective books, specifically those where the two chapters aren't the same plot twice, but advance the plot from the other character's eyes. I really liked how she portrayed Kelan's internal struggle. It was very well done!

I am not usually an enemies to lovers fan, but I was truly rooting for Kelan and Sol the entire novel. I did feel that even though it was a slow burn, the romance still happened very quickly. Also, since it was enemies to lovers, they fought very often. I thought a lot of their arguments were very trivial so I found myself getting annoyed with them.

The ending was nice and exactly what I expected! I was extremely satisfied with the ending.

I received a free ebook ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This book is a quick and easy read that you don’t have to think about too much (and I suggest you don’t). This book alternates POV between our huntress Sol, a woman of the mountains, and Kelan, a flameskin soldier. Initially, these two are complete opposite missions; Sol, to get a soon to be Princess to her new city safely and Kelan to kill that Princess.

Through a series of circumstances, our two characters find themselves trekking through the mountains together and falling in love. This book was non-stop action from just about the very beginning. I enjoyed that it was fast paced in this way. Towards the end, it did feel a little rushed and I think we lost some detail in that (I’m still not clear is a wraith is a different species or just younger flameskins?).

Overall, I enjoyed the ride and would definitely like to read the sequel to see exactly where Sol and Kelan end up.

I received an ARC from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Firefrost is a great example of a true execution of enemies-to-lovers that works. It’s not animosity based on a petty misunderstanding, but wider world conditions that have made it so that a romance between them is unlikely, and they initially both buy into it. However, it also walks that line where the situation demands they depend on each other, leading to them naturally transitioning into a romance in a believable way.

Longley beautifully conveys both the balance of diminishing hatred and growing vulnerability in Sol and Kelan’s dynamic, and the tension crackled throughout. Her prose was also fast-paced and engaging.

My one complaint is that I felt the fantasy world was a bit underdeveloped…I mean, it’s typical for YA fantasy to be less grand in scope, but I did wish it had something to distinguish it, given I’ve read some lately that did. However, I did like that this book included some illustrations, adding to my image of the characters.

As this is a debut, I’m curious to see where Longley goes from here. And if you like YA fantasy, I think you’ll be interested in trying this book.

This was somewhere between a 3 and a 4 for me, because I did like the premise and the story but it was still flawed. Decided to bump it up to a 4 because I did stay up all night to read it.

The good - I really liked the idea of pyras. Basically demon-possessed firebenders. I liked how the Flameskin and mages complimented each other with the give and take of fire. I liked Sol and Kelan, although their characterizations were a bit shakey at the start. Kelan as some kind of playboy? Yeah that doesn't sound right. He's way too devoted too quickly to be that much of a flirt, haha.

The not so good - the writing lacked transitions and was often repetitive. You'd be in the middle of a scene and it would shift so quickly to the next that it felt jarring. And it often felt like the same arguments or same conflicts happening over and over again - I wanted to cut a lot of repetitive dialogue and replace it with escalating transitions.

I also want to know more about Sol's origins, although since this is the start of a series, I'm assuming that'll be covered later. I'll probably keep reading the series, because I am curious what happens next (that ending was bit ??? ok I guess this is happening now) and I want to see what happens to Sol.

Fantastic, I loved every minute of this, I love the enemies to lovers trope so this was always going to be a win for me, it’s fast paced, fun and addictive reading from the start to end, I was sad when it ended as I needed more. Looking forward to more by the author and can’t wait for the next

I'll start by saying I did not know this was a prequel novel when I downloaded it from netgalley. The synopsis seems interesting and that cover looks great.

This is a dual pov kind of story. We have Sol and Kelan as our main characters. So the setting is in a fictional kingdom which is currently in a war. Kelan is a flameskin soldier and Sol is a normal huntress just trying to provide food for her family. So they are technically from different worlds.

Due to some accident, they were forced to travel together while hating each other. At the earlier part of the book, it was really a struggle for me because I dislike Sol. Something about her rubs me the wrong way. I almost dnf this book but halfway through I started to get attached to the characters and got invested on the story.

The book has lots of exciting scenes and surprising twists. Also, the characters are likable. I love how things wrapped up on the end.👍❤

***Thanks for netgalley, the publisher and author for making this available for review.***

The book centers around two individuals, Sol and Kenan, who are forced to rely on one another after an avalanche leaves them the only survivors. While this may not seem so bad—I mean, it is better to be in the wild with company than no one at all—Kenan is a flameskin and Sol has been taught to fear and hate people like him. Flameskins are humans who share their bodies with a pyra, a spirit or a demon if you will, that hungers for violence and death. It gives the human immense power but it also can take over their lives. Through much of the book, Kenan struggles to maintain his humanity while Sol only sees him as a demon. The more time they spend in each other’s presence, the more Sol starts to question her views of flameskins. As they get closer to their destination, the decision to go their separate ways becomes increasingly more difficult.

I ended up liking the book more than I thought I would. This likely has to do with some revelations I didn't catch onto until just before they happened as well as an explosive ending. Additionally, I am a fan of character-driven novels and Firefrost can be categorized as such. I was immediately intrigued by Sol when she was introduced. She is a complex character when compared to Kenan, and she also undergoes the most growth--Kenan doesn't change very much from beginning to end. The worldbuilding isn't the most complex and is a bit lacking in some aspects, which I hope will be further fleshed out in subsequent books. Unexpectedly, romance dominated the book and drove important decisions, making the power of love one of the dominant themes in the novel. I can try to point out additional good and less good things about the book but what it comes down to is that after I finished reading it, it just left me with an overall feeling of contentment. I'm not sure how else to describe it.

This book was everything I wanted and everything I hadn't expected.

When I added this book to my shelf to read and review, I was excited at the idea of fire magic. Any kind of elemental magic will always have my heart so I was ready to dive in head first. However, the magic in this book was not what I expected - but definitely not in a bad way. I absolutely loved how the author weaved in the magic into who the characters are!

She gave us two very different characters who in many ways weren't so different at all. They just had to overcome some obstacles to figure that out. Both know and can wield fire, but in very different ways. That was one of the things that surprised me. Most of the time, elemental magic is given such hard and fast rules that it can only be used in one way. So this dynamic was unique and surprising and really very amazing. It constantly surprised me and kept me on my toes.

The only thing I wasn't thrilled about with this book was the amount of time the main characters called each other Demon and Hunter. These characters were thrown together in very extreme circumstances and I would have liked them to have at least gotten on a name basis much sooner even though I do understand why the author extended the use of the titles.

Ultimately, the pacing of this story was good and the character development as well as world building was strong. I can't wait to dig into the next book when it releases. I want to know more about the world and the characters and their overall journey. If you like fire magic, unique worlds and magic systems, and well developed characters this book is for you. Give is a try!. I'm giving it a solid 4 stars. Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a free ARC so that I could review this book.

4/5 stars.
First I have to say that this story has awesome characters! It’s a really character-driven storyline, so to have Kelan and Sol be such strong and likeable characters makes it that much easier to read.
The story starts off quickly and then it both slows down but also never seems to stop. Kelan is a Flameskin and a soldier in their army. Sol is a huntress leading the Tokken army through the mountains. When their paths cross, the two are forced into a situation they’d rather not be in. This of course leads to some enemies-to-lovers tension (which I love!) and ultimately a full romance.
This story is a fantasy, but it’s primarily a romance story. The intrigue of the war and the Flameskins was a backdrop to the love story of Kelan and Sol. Two people who are fighting against all the odds to be together in the end, they are constantly facing new challenges. I really wanted to see them work it out, and that kept me hooked while I read this book.
I did find that it dragged a little bit towards the end, but it was also starting to feel a bit repetitive as well. We’re constantly reminded of how many things can go wrong, and how Kelan and Sol will never be able to be together.
Overall though, if you like a sort of doomed-lovers feeling trope that starts with some enemies-to-lovers, I’d recommend checking this one out!

An enemies to lovers book - and let's be honest who doesn't love that! Not to mention the added stakes of battle and you have yourself a winning novel!! Absolutely loved this book - found the pacing, characters and relationships gripping.

An interesting enemies to lovers story that has you gripped until tangential page.

This book is excellent, well written, with a good plot and a wonderfully crafted magic system.

I really enjoyed this book, and would definitely recommend it.

I’ll be honest here, I wasn’t expecting to love this one. Especially in the beginning, the writing felt a little clunky, but as it went on, it got SOOO much better. The writing isn’t super flowery, but it’s also not clinical. It’s that perfect mix of poetic and descriptive.

The pacing was good and the plot felt real and believable. The romance was also paced well. I don’t feel like it was over the top rushed or anything. The magic was also really interesting. The idea was something that I had never really seen before and it was nice to see a new concept being implemented the way that Firefrost did.

The characters, Kelan and Sol were interesting to read the perspective from and I loved them as a couple. The changes that they underwent together and their falling in love was wonderful to read about. The romance is an enemies to lovers and it had some angst and build up that I was 100000% here for. This is a prequel to the first book in the Flameskin Chronicles and I plan on reading the next in the series, Flameskin.

Interesting story and a new world is really something new. I did get mix up with the different people but would like to know how this story will continue. Love the end

Flameskins have this fire “spirit” thing inside them called pyra and when they grow up it consumes them and takes over. They are feared, hated and persecuted for it. Flameskins and a kingdom called Tokken has been at war for a long time. Sol, a Tokken huntress, and Kelan, a flameskin soldier, end up travelling together and things happen.

I really liked the idea of flameskins and how pyra just takes control pretty much turns them into a demon. We get the story from both sides as every other chapter is from Sol’s pov and every other is from Kelan’s pov. The plot revolves mostly around Sol and Kelan and their relationship from enemies to lovers. I liked Kelan instantly and I did like Sol, but she was so hung up on her ideals at first.

My complaints are that there was little of world-building. We didn’t really learn about like the cultures and people in it. Sold and Kelan are most of the book alone in the mountains but still. But apparently, this is a prequel to the actual series, and I hope the world-building gets better in that. And I would have liked less focus on romance and more focus on world-building.

That being said, I didn’t want to put the book down because I wanted to know what happens next. So that’s a good thing. A great debut book.

This story is solid and was told great. The plot was told very well. It does have a touch of romance in the book but it wasn't that over took the book! I loved the characters and the world building was great.

I highly recommend this read!

I received this book free as an ARC from Net Galley. All opinions are my own.

Firefrost is a sweet, hate-to-love romance, set in a high fantasy world. It has a beautifully developed romance with a great magic system and political backdrop. First and foremost is the romance but the setting was interesting and ties the whole thing together. If you love sickeningly sweet, star crossed lovers in a magical war torn world, this book should be great for you.

Some MILD SPOILERY thoughts. Look away if you want to keep all the surprises!

This book has one of the best hate-to-love romances I've personally read. It's development made total sense throughout and didn't have the highly toxic traits many hate-to-loves seem to have. They started off hating each other for excellent reasons; due to being on opposite sides of a war and racial prejudice. They had to work together for obvious reasons; they needed to work together in order to survive and would have certainly died without each others specific skills. They fell in love with a natural progression; they got to know one another over an intimate period of time and had to unlearn the bad prejudice they grew up with. The development felt natural and unforced to me. All the conflict was due to their own upbringings and prejudices or the war and them being on conflicting sides. I loved the self reflection process these characters went through and all the political elements made for a grounded story in a fantastical world. The only critique I would give the romance would be it could be a little sickly sweet at times. (Maybe that's just because I'm not the biggest romance lover.) If you love the cheese and all the romantic feels this should be a positive rather than a negative, but it depends on your taste.

Balancing the romance out nicely was the world. I loved the political elements and the themes of war. Neither side of the war were just, they both were working off of hate and prejudice from the people before them, which seemed very realistic and telling of real life war. There was an arranged marriage of a princess to align two kingdoms and I found these realistic elements brought this story to life and gave it a great grounded feeling. I like books that have realistic themes and both the relationship and the politics did that.
The magic system was what brought the magic and fantasy. There is a race of people in the story called Flameskins who can produce and control fire. This is because of of their pyra, their word for a demon. The demons live in the Flameskins minds, urging them to cause destruction, kill and burn. The pyra can take over or possess a Flameskin after time and it is why the humans hate them and believe them dangerous. The fire magic was fun to read about and I liked the demonic element. The pyra that spoke to our main character gave this story such depth, danger and reminded me of real life mental illnesses. It was fantastical and the morality throughout the story was great to see.

To enjoy a romance you have to like your main two characters and I did. They balanced each other out well and had good personalities. This book is duel POV which I enjoy and it was fun to see each others perspective on the other. Sol was a take no prisoners, knows what she's doing kind of character. She had a great internal process of unlearning the racial teachings of her father and community and it was fun to learn and grow with her. Kelan was sassy, funny and endearing. His internal conflict between him and his pyra was fascinating to watch and I found his character very likeable. Both characters were almost opposites of what you'd expect them to be from the outside and the fun was in watching them realise that they could not judge so quickly. They didn't feel stereotypical or cut out archetypes, they felt like people with personalities. They made a great team and fit well together.
The pacing was a little unusual. Not bad, but the story goes further than I thought it would. The hate to love process felt natural but the story continues on into more phases than I expected. When they fall in love and decide they are going to try and make it together, it's only halfway through the story and there is more to come. It was a nice surprise but did break the typical arc of most stories. It was both a good and bad thing I suppose.

Overall I loved the themes in this story. Internalized racism, lack of good sides and bad sides in war, self-control against bad thoughts and more. That coupled with a pretty healthy hate-to-love, star crossed lovers romance that sweeps you off your feet? Great combination. I recommend this for romance lovers who also love magic and fantasy sprinkled in and enjoy realistic and introspective topics subtly woven throughout.

Oh I am a sucker for enemies to lovers, however toss in some fantasy, SOLD! What we get with this book is an epic tale of war, passion and magic. I found this had great flow with some interesting twists and amazing attention to detail. Creating a world is never easy and I found the author gave great detail of this concept. There is some interesting push and pull between the characters. Overall, I found this book fairy enjoyable!

This was SUCH a good read! I was completely drawn in the whole time, and I loved every second. The main characters were so easy to fall in love with- they weren't perfect and it was 100% ok. I haven't been this into a new book in a long time, and would absolutely recommend picking this one up! I need to read more in this world!!

I received a copy of the book to review from Netgalley. Thank you for the opportunity.
I loved this book! It had great characters who were great to read yet relatable at the same time. There was plenty to get your teeth into, with fantasy, romance and plenty of adventure.
On the flip side, at times the action felt rushed and in particular, crammed in at the end. I would have also liked more world building and exploring of certain characters (spoilers!) at the end.
On the whole, a thoroughly enjoyable and beautiful read. Be prepared to stay up until the early hours of the morning with this page turner of a novel!

This book was full of adventure, magic, battles, and romance. This enemies to lovers romance had multiple twists and surprises, and kept me enthralled until the very end. Firefrost is set in a richly detailed world, with novel sources of magic and a battle raging between those with and without magic.

Sol is a huntress, hired as a scout to guide journey of Lady Isabella to her betrothed. A war is raging between Flameskins, those with fire magic, and Tokkens. While on their journey, a fight ensues with a camp of Flameskins who have been tasked with killing Lady Isabella to destroy an alliance that would add more soldiers to the Tokken cause. After a series of events, Sol and Kalen are the only survivors. Sol has grown up with a deep prejudice and hatred of Flameskins. Kalen is a soldier, trying to avoid possession by his pyra while also fighting those who would kill all the Flameskins in existence. What transpires is a journey through the mountains, through hostile lands, and to a happily ever after that seems to elude both of them.

I enjoyed this journey, but the ending left me wanting more. The ending leaves the story open for a follow-up or sequel, and I'd like to enter this world again. And I'm a sucker for enemies to lovers!

I like fantasy books that have a different twist on the magic in it. I liked the idea of the Flameskins and how they were persecuted, but also not innocent. I liked the two main characters and the overall plot of the book. Sol was interesting and I liked her connection with the mountains and how she overcame what she was taught. I found the book a bit rushed, it seemed like everything happened in quick succession. I also felt like you got introduced to a lot of characters at the end and I would have liked them to get more depth from them. This book read like a standalone, and then I saw it was a series and I was worried. But it turns out to be a prequel which I am okay with because I think the story for these characters is done. I didn’t think it was necessary for there to be two adopted children, they didn’t add really anything to the story and since the next books seem to be many years later they wouldn’t even directly be in them. If the book hadn’t felt so rushed for me near the end I would rate it higher than 3.75.

This was an interesting story that I found really interesting to read. The story is essentially a romance in a fantasy world, but the adventure the two main characters go on has laid the groundwork for the next book in the series. I am looking forward to reading more about this world

I didn’t know this at first, but this book is just spinoff prequel to the Flameskin Chronicles. It’s a fantastic introduction to the universe and I will definitely be looking into the main series to discover more about the magical world that was refreshing and wonderfully original.
The type of characters were distinct and well written with their magical aspects, you have the Flameskins who are humans born with a fire demon pyra who slowly possesses the host the more they use their fire ability until they are taken over completely, the Saints who are essentially Flameskins who are unable to be possessed by demons and have full control over their powers and Mages who can gain access to magic whilst touching an emberstone but will slowly lose a part of who they are the more they use it. Of course you also have the humans across the continent who fear those with magic and have declared war against them, except the Saints. I even liked the power of the mountain spirits who recognise one of their own and were acknowledged as gods and goddesses through out each magical land told through fables and stories, such as the Ulve Mountain gods with their ice wolves and seeds of magic.

The story itself was told through both perspectives of Sol and Kelan which helped build on their characters as well as the slow burning romance between them.
Both characters on opposite sides of a war, both intertwined through unfortunately circumstances, both having to work together to survive the journey through the snowy mountains, determined to use each other to their own advantage before betraying the other when the time comes. What they didn’t expect was to find a connection on their journey that will create an understanding and unspoken commitment to one another.

I liked Sol and her strong willed stubborn attitude and her bias against the Flameskins race after everything her father had taught her at the beginning. It really shows how much she matures throughout the story but I have to say, the love hate was a bit annoying to start with, I was getting fed up with Sol with the whole ‘I hate him’, ‘I think I like him’, ‘but he’s a demon so I hate him’, ‘but I do I like him’, ‘but he’s a demon’, ‘but I must like him’ aspect. I honestly don’t know how Kelan stuck around at times, Sol was so frustrating that even I couldn’t handle her indecisiveness. Not that I didn’t respect it or completely understand it. She spent her entire life fighting against the one person she now spends every moment with in order to survive, the one being her father fought to protect his family against was now keeping her warm at night – she sees herself as a disgrace to his father’s legacy and everything their village stood against. It’s no surprise she battles with herself when it comes to Kelan. However, I do have to admit, it’s only when she starts questioning everything she knew and comes to to accept her feelings for Kelan that the story really blooms. They come to rely on each other to survive, a romantic us v.s the world rather than fighting each other at every corner which was becoming a bit tedious at times.

Kelan had his good and bad moments, he could go from being a scary ass fire demon army lieutenant, to a scared cowering human in an instant. It was like sometimes he forgot he was born a soldier even without his demon inside him to rely on. How he clung onto Sol like a lifeline, he was too desperate for a fire warrior but it played the part to build up his character and the relationship between them so even I could appreciate that. You were able to see both parts of his character when he let go of his humanity and the person he was so desperate to be when he fought off his inner demon. The way that he was willing to do anything to keep Sol safe was heartwarming, even when she continued to fight and belittle him. I have to say though, even when they began to see something more between them, I really didn’t like how easily Kelan was manipulated to think the worse of Sol after he was willing to give up the world for her. Pick a lane!

The scenery was beautifully dire with the endless snowy setting that goes on for so long in the story, the slow perilous journey through the mountains gave you enough time to get to know the characters as they came to rely on each other. It created a magically isolated setting that tested their strength and patience, you could truly imagine yourself there keeping warm in a cave, hiking through the snow with snowshoes or coming across empty villages on their path to the city hunting for food. Even after they left the snowy mountains, the author took their time to really build up the world and the environment around them whether it was Sol’s home village, travelling across the country to escape the war that threatens to tear them apart or their escape to the dark forest of Hivid Wood full of wraiths and abandoned Flameskin children. The whole world building was fantastic and I can’t wait to discover more in the main chronicles!

Firstly the cover is beautiful and would definitely catch my eye in a bookshop.
The premise of this book has everything I enjoy in a fantasy young adult novel; enemies-to-lovers, huntresses, angst, and tension.
The dynamic between Sol and Kellan was great and I really enjoyed reading that part. I also liked the world-building and I found myself able to immerse myself into the book.

I will be buying a physical copy of this book.

This book was exactly what I was hoping it would be - enemies to lovers! and this book did it so well. Sometimes you just need a little love with your fantasy and I'm so glad to have read this one. I found the fantastical elements easily immersive and the storyline between Sol and Kelan to be entrenching. I really enjoyed getting to know the magical system as well as the characters - sometimes a book can concentrate on one and leave the other behind but I found them both to be so well rounded.
The growth between the characters as they face each other as well as the circumstances surrounding them was such a joy to read. I truly hope to read more books in the future by Longley.

The enemies to lover trope is one that's being overdone these day, but Firefrost took the right amount of enemies and the right amount of lovers to make world that was engaging and characters who came off the page as real. I liked the setting of the books and the way it showed different points of view.

Firefrost is a character driven story in which two enemies, Sol and Kelan, are forced together in order to survive a treacherous journey through a wintery mountain pass. In this book, secrets will be revealed that will force these two to grow and change their outlooks not only about the war, but also about themselves.

Sol is a huntress/mage where Kelan is a Flameskin, and at first they absolutely hate each other due to the brutal war that has been going on between the humans and the Flameskins. Then the accident happens and they are forced together to survive. During that time, their relationship grows from beyond enemies to lovers as they learn to trust each other. The character development of these two was amazing and was probably my favorite part of the book!

I won't lie, the world-building is a bit lacking, but I overlooked it since this is just a prequel to the Flameskin Chronicles and it is more character driven than plot driven. I will say though that the information that was in this book was very well explained. I look forward to reading the rest of the Flameskin Chronicle books!

Firefrost was an intense enemies-to-lovers fantasy novel set in the back drop of an age-old war with two characters who have incredible chemistry and how they must come together, put aside their prejudices in order to survive a treacherous mountain pass in the middle of winter.

If you are a fan of web comics and you have the Webtoon app, and you ultimately LOVED this book, then I can't help but suggest you read SubZero to quell your book hangover from reading Firefrost!

** spoiler alert ** I really liked that one! The action was well described, and realistic, reading it felt like watching a movie!

Watching Sol warming up to Kelan's condition and questioning everything she even known was beautiful. She really was the better human, this queen of the mountains.

The romance was beautifully paced too. Except for the wedding, that I still don't even know if it happened for real (I think not, but I'm lost here. Having a digital galley mean I didn't want to go back to check).

Many thanks to BooksGoSocial for the complimentary e-copy of this book through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

The characters nestled themselves into my heart pretty quickly in this one, which is probably good since this book had very little plot aside from following along with our characters.

It does get more intense and the world does expand as you get nearer to the end of the book and then it leaves you on the thirstiest trap of all cliffhangers! I do, in fact, need to know what happens next though, so mission accomplished.

The slow burn, enemies to lovers romance is done very well!

Some of the plot twists were fairly predictable but they are done well enough that they're still enjoyable.

Overall, it was a middle-of-the-road read for me and I'm good with that.

Thanks, Netgalley and publisher, for the opportunity to read and review!
"Firefrost" turned our to be a great way to introduce a prequel of a famous story. I knew I wanted to read it when I saw "enemies to loves", "fire magic" and "found family" - my all-time favourite elements in a good book.
The pyro-magic gives a very fresh feeling of a system I have no clue about, and it was truly thrilling to follow Kelan's story and his attitude towards such a supernatural gift. He was my favourite among the characters, especially after we learn what his heart wishes turn out to be and how tenderly he expresses them.
Sol, on the other hand, was a challenge for me to like. She started off as a fierce heroine with a set vision and grew into a thoughtful girl in love who needs to make a tough choice and question her beliefs.
It was fascinating to root for Sol and Kelan as a couple and to see how their hearts bloom in a very hot chemical reaction.
I haven't read the rest of the series but this book is how I envision a great back-story of a world.

Firefrost gave me mixed feelings.

I wasn’t certain on the first half of the book. I enjoyed the premise, but the enemies-to-lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers grew tedious.

This was partly due to the characters. I loved Kelan from the start: the boy fighting against his destiny, determined to be better than how everyone saw him. But Sol took longer to warm to due to her stubborn nature and refusal to let down her guard. It made her strong, but also made her cold.

The second half of the book, however, I loved. Relationships finally started moving forward, which gave the plot momentum and heightened the tension. We saw the characters – especially Sol – grow as they formed their own thoughts rather than what they’d been told. I liked both of them by then, and you rooted for them to find a way to be together despite all the odds.

I liked the magic system; more than one way to control fire meant it wasn’t as clear cut as we’re led to believe at the beginning. It gave all the characters power and limitations in their own right, and allowed Sol and Kelan to complement each other’s talents. The idea of a group of people being taken over by demons, decided from birth and unable to do anything about it, is an intriguing premise as well.

The plot in the second half was also stronger. It moved from just travel which, despite its perils, did grow a little tedious at times. As more characters become involved, the stakes are higher and you see the main characters flourish as they have to protect more than their budding romance. The pace also increases, which meant I was unable to put it down during the latter part of the book.

Overall, I found this a thoroughly enjoyable read. I looked to continue the series, but as it follows different characters, I’m not certain whether it would draw me in the way this one did. Maybe one day I’ll come back to this world.

Despite a slow start, Firefrost is an action-packed novel of magic, forbidden romance and overcome prejudices despite everything you’ve been taught. It’s an enjoyable read and one I’d recommend to anyone looking for a new fantasy world to explore.
