Description

Nouveau-Quebec, 1964. Nilliq, a young Inuit woman chafing under the sullen power of her father, mourns the many recent deaths in their remote hunting camp.

The appearance of Wallin, a handsome young shaman, gives her sudden hope for freedom... even love? Wallin has seen enough of the shabby settlement life and seeks a return to the old ways. But can Nilliq trust him, when he returns alone from a showdown with her father?

Their overland journey by dogsled, to find kindred spirits and enlist the aid of a sympathetic priest on the opposite coast, casts them as fugitives from the white man's justice.

RCMP Corporal Jack McLain, baffled by a series of unsolved murders, knows the latest case will make or break his career. Navigating his own shaky relationship with his Inuit secretary, Jack is resolved to do things his way even if it means bucking HQ.

The narrative alternates between Nilliq and Jack, as their paths intersect in this tense mystery charting a journey of personal and cultural transformation. The vivid and intimate portrait of a vanishing way of life is reminiscent of the film Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner. One reviewer calls Hunter’s Daughter “a fascinating story… by far the best book I have received through Library Thing's Early Reviewers' program.”
