Courting Misfortune is the first in the Joplin Chronicles series by Regina Jennings.

Calista York is a young woman determined to prove herself as a Pinkerton agent. Sent on a mission to find a missing girl, Calista finds herself in the depraved town of Joplin. A town filled with miners, rich on Saturday and poor by Monday. As Calista tries to ingrain herself into the town, she is distracted by Matthew Cook, a young pastor bound to help the lost souls of Joplin. And it doesn't help that her cousins show up at the most inconvenient times.

Matthew has felt the call of God since he was young, and has made a promise to go to the worst place on earth. He finds just that in Joplin. His high moral standards make him a great hero. Was he being too idealistic? But he cared. He mourned the Joplin residents weaknesses.

Yet they both are encouraged by this verse. " And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due seasons we shall reap, if we faint not."

Humorous and light hearted, with a bit of danger and romance, Regina Jennings makes for interesting reading.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Net Galley and the publisher. All views expressed are my honest opinion.

You can count on this author for a sound, historical fiction set in the midwest. I was excited for a new series from Jennings, and this one was no disappointment.

After a somewhat slower start, the pace of this book accelerates and will keep you on the edge of your seat. I enjoyed that we have the main female character as a Pinkerton agent, and that the large majority of the tension revolves around that storyline. Matthew has his own agenda of course, but really it takes a back seat to the main plot. I loved Calista's personality and her heart, which comes through clearly on the page.

I read a complimentary eARC thanks to Netgalley. This is my honest review.

Very enjoyable story about a woman who is trying to land a position with Pinkerton detective agency and has to go undercover in a town packed with her relatives. It was a fun story to read and very entertaining.

You know it's a good book when you hate to reach the end. Such is the case (for me anyway) for Courting Misfortune. I love Regina Jennings and anything she writes, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Calista is a female agent for the Pinkerton agency. Her assignment is to find a girl that has been kidnapped from her home in Chicago. After a month of searching and not finding any signs at all of the poor girl, Calista is about ready to throw in the towel. The girl, Lila, has truly disappeared. While searching, Calista has met a man, Matthew, that makes her want to trust him with all of her secrets. Matthew knows there are things she is hiding from him, but he isn't certain why. He figures it out eventually, and she confesses to him. Eventually, it is he that finds what happened to Lila, and he tells her, at which point she must make some serious decisions. It's a great adventure that I will love reading again! Great, clean story!

Calista York wants to find her purpose in life, and after encountering a Pinkerton detective, she knows she’s found her calling. Even when Mr. Pinkerton sends her to Joplin, Mo, to find a missing teen, Calista knows God has her where he wants her. If only her extended family would stay out of her business long enough to let her do her job.

Her parents and siblings live a short train ride away in Kansas City, and a passel of cousins, uncles, and aunts live just outside Joplin. She races to finish her work before her Grandma realizes she’s in town or Mr. Pinkerton decides to send another operative. Once she proves herself, her Pinkerton job will be secure. At which time she can tell her family about her journey from debutant to detective, a life of ease to a life of purpose.

Her only problem? A sweet, but misguided missionary keeps putting himself between her and her job. He thinks she needs saving from misfortune and cluelessness. She just needs him to stay out of her way so she can finish her job. And then her cousins show up.

Matthew Cook answered God’s call to leave his tiny hometown of Pine Gap to help the downtrodden in Joplin. But he seems to spend most of his time rescuing a frivolous young woman from the bad choices she seems determined to make.

Matthew’s ministry goes slowly, but he knows with hard work and determination, he’ll fulfill the mission God gave him. If only the careless Miss Calista York didn’t need his protection.

Why I Love This Book

You won’t find fluffy romance with cardboard characters in Regina Jennings’ books. Her characters have unique jobs, relatable questions about how God works through ordinary people, spine-tingling intrigue, and sweet romance

A great story with lots of twists and turns, strong female leading character, an undercover detective and a sweet romance story. I enjoyed all the ways that plot continued to grow and change throughout the story as the story unfolded. The secrets that started to be revealed about two thirds of the way through the story were really attention grabbing. I really liked the two main characters and felt invested in them from very early on. I liked seeing them mature individually into who they were meant to be and how they were called to serve God. I really enjoyed the story of this book although at times it felt like the story moved slower than I liked. I'm still glad I read this book. I've enjoyed this author's other works and definitely feel like this is another fabulous story to add to her collection. Thank you netgalley for a free advanced copy of this book.

Calista York is trying to solidify her position as a Pinkerton Agent but things get complicated when she gets sent to investigate a kidnapping in her cousin’s hometown. She meets up with a preacher who’s trying to make a difference in this rowdy, mining town but she can’t be herself while trying to solve the case which takes her into many of the seedier areas of town. Soon her cousins and family are involved and things become a big mess….or do they? Sometimes what seems a mess to us is just another piece of God’s plan.
I enjoyed this book. Calista is funny and resourceful. She’s quick-witted and sharp tongued. She’s full of adventure and dedicated to her cause. She and Matthew are fun to watch together. She appears to be everything he isn’t looking for in a lady but he keeps finding himself drawn to her. This may be a good thing as she has a tendency to get into trouble.
There is a novella prequel to this series, but this book can easily be read as a stand alone. It’s a delightful read. I’d recommend it. Thank you to Bethany House for providing me with a free e-copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Pinkerton agent on probation, Calista York heads home to Joplin, MO for her latest case. She is trying to disguise herself and go places where no respectable women go, while attempting to keep her job secret from family. Matthew, an honest, wanna be missionary is trying to win souls in the mining community of Joplin, a little naive , but he knows something is up with Calista. Apparently there's a novella that has some of the previous characters? I didn't read that, but I followed along fine. The flaws in Calista and Matthew are both realistic and sometimes humorous. I enjoy Regina Jennings books, and found this one just as enjoyable as the others. I'll be telling my friends who like her to read this one.

An intriguing, valuable read from Regina Jennings! Courting Misfortune is a romantic, inspirational, and exciting story, and is one of my new favorites of Jennings novels.

The character connections within the story never failed to surprise me. Of course, I won’t give anything away here, but readers will be perpetually intrigued by the plot’s twists and turns! This story also gave me valuable reminders about the importance of not judging people whose shoes I haven’t walked in. I empathized with and felt for each of the characters in this story, and the lessons I learned from them will stay with me. There are also funny moments that made me smile, and wonderful imagery that captivated me.

Fans of authors such as Regina Scott and Tracie Peterson won’t want to miss Courting Misfortune! 4/5 stars

All Calista wants to do is be a Pinkerton agent. One last successful assignment is all she needs to prove herself. The only problem is that she is sent to Joplin where she has lots of family and Joplin is a wild town. How can she remain incognito when she runs into family at every turn. Then there's Matthew. He's trying to keep her from entering into the den of iniquity.

This is a good book that I recommend. Who knew that Joplin had such shady beginnings.

"Thanks for making me do what I didn't want to do. Thanks for making me be a better person than I want to be today."

Regina Jennings once again delivers a historical romance with wit, charm, funny laugh-out-loud scenes, and wonderful characters with a subtle undercurrent of intrigue and mystery. This novel kicks off her new Joplin Chronicles series set in late 1890s and it promises to be an exciting and adventurous series. Calista is an undercover Pinkerton agent in training who has been sent to Joplin, MO to find a kidnapped daughter of a Chicago mobster. Her enthusiastic devotion to her calling as an investigator, ingenuity, and cleverness are unparalleled though she does constantly get into one scrape or another while on the job. Her physical proximity to her large, influential extended family in Joplin hinders her work but provides for much amusement. Matthew is a farm boy who's followed God's calling to Joplin to preach and minister. His naive, good-hearted, compassionate nature is refreshing and lovely though he needs to learn humility in the hardened mining town. There are plenty of memorable scenes like playing charades, foray into seedy bars, volunteering at an orphanage, Bible studies in Matthew's little cottage, and a baby raffle in the midst of Calista and Matthew each finding the right path that God is calling them to. If you enjoy well-written, fun historical romance, you will definitely enjoy this book.

Impressions: This was a charming mystery and romance.
Rating: Alcohol, prostitutes, pregnancy out of wedlock, selling babies, assault, and deception.
Liked: I enjoyed all the characters in this book. They worked well together.
Disliked: At the beginning of the book, Matthew appeared to be more backward country. He certainly developed quickly in the ways of the world as he lived in Joplin. I feel like he would have kept some more of this country talk and ways even as he sharpened to the city.
Learned: Even when God calls us to do something our path may not be straightforward and clear. I was inspired by Matthew and Calista's why to their ministries: "And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due seasons we shall reap, if we faint not."
Quotes: "The church is for sinners, rich and poor. Some come to us already trained and disciplined, while others have only begun their journey. If we turned away everyone who hadn't surrendered their will, where else would they hear the challenge to do so?"
"You know, it's frustrating to be the one who sees what should be, young man. To see what no one else wants to see. But maybe that frustration is only telling you that you're in place to do the most good."
"Matthew had come to Joplin with the intention of interrupting the cycle that caught the miners --from the promise of easy riches, to poverty, to pain, to numbing the pain by utilizing the ever-present alcohol."

I love this new series. I especially love that this brings in people that were minor characters and main characters from previous stories. Calista thinks she wants certain things in her life but maybe she wants something else. Mathew needs to learn what some of the people go through each day before he can preach to them. I really enjoyed the laughs in the story. I loved the twists and turns. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

In Courting Misfortune, you'll meet a spunky heroine and an honorable preacher whose lives collide when Calista goes to Joplin on a case for the Pinkertons. At first Matthew thinks she's up to no good and is on a mission to save her. Calista struggles between wanting Matthew and needing to finish this job. This is an adventurous Christian romance written by one of my favorite authors. The extra characters (mostly Calista's cousins) help make this a fun romp!

Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review.

This was a fun lighthearted mystery. If you are familiar with and enjoy Ms Jennings’ books, you won’t be disappointed in this latest one. Good, solid storytelling with a moving plot and interesting characters

Courting Misfortune by Regina Jennings is the first in a new series Joplin Chronicles. I live close to Joplin, so I found it fascinating to see what type of town it was historically.

I enjoyed seeing the heroine, Calista, as the Pinkerton detective. The story kept me guessing as to if she would find the lost daughter. It was a very satisfying ending.

The author balanced humor and series storylines for an enjoyable read. Some of the scenes with Calista and Matthew, the pastor were funny. Matthew dealt with some interesting situations trying to be a pastor to this unusual group of miners.

I was pleased with the author’s ability to create strong female characters that were also likable.

I look forward to more in the series.

With Courting Misfortune, Regina Jennings has once again crafted a book with a great cast of characters and plenty of incentive to keep turning pages.

I love a good Pinkerton story, and Courting Misfortune did not disappoint. Calista’s determination makes her a great detective, and I enjoyed watching her go about the city trying to find Lila. Matthew’s presence not only provides a distraction but also conflict that threatens to keep Calista from her goal. The resulting tension is delicious and keeps you turning pages.

And the secondary characters definitely provide comedic relief. The antics of Calista’s cousins had me laughing out loud, and I loved their interactions with both Calista and Matthew.

I loved the reminder that not everything is as it seems. Matthew assumes Calista is a sheep gone astray, not realizing she has a deep faith that sustains her. A lot of this issue stems from Calista’s willingness to enter a gray area in order to progress in her investigation. I think this definitely gives Christians some food for thought. Is it important how we present ourselves to the world? And does our conviction to witness to lost souls sometimes lead to an inflated sense of self-importance? Matthew’s frustration that his mission wasn’t going the way he wanted definitely made me wonder about this. Do we want to serve God or create a name for ourselves? I think it’s an easy line to cross.

I think Matthew’s zeal and the lessons he learns also deepened the romance with Calista. Their determination to help others is what makes them a great couple, even if it sometimes creates conflict between them. But all that conflict made the ending that much sweeter.

I could say so much more, but I want to avoid spoilers. Let’s just say Jennings takes you on an adventure filled with misunderstandings, mishaps, and an unexpected twist.

Overall, Courting Misfortune is an entertaining read historical romance readers will love.

Some books are a pure joy to read! I found that while reading Courting Misfortune that I was just smiling the whole way through it and even laughing aloud in some parts. Calista York's family was so entertaining and reminded me a bit of my family. The baby raffle in the story was definitely one of the most outrageous things I've ever read about but is a real event that has happened in the past. I love Matthew's very black-and-white attitude, it's people like him that lead the charge on change and reform. People with a very black-and-white attitude are most effective when they have someone by their side who have the same hunger for justice but are able to see the gray areas and soften their edges and approach. Such a person is Calista, who's pursuit of justice is sincere though the way she goes about it isn't as straight cut as Matthew's. Their first meeting was so much fun to read! So take a journey to Joplin, the raucous mining town in Missouri. Follow Matthew as he tries to right the wrongs of the city and Calista as she attempts to work undercover while hiding her true motives from her family. Courting Misfortune was both entertaining and enjoyable, you won't be disappointed!

An entertaining story to start off a fun new series

This story reminded me a lot of Jen Turano's books, though the comedy's a little more understated, not quite as "madcap".

Calista is trying to figure out how to find & rescue a missing young woman, so she can become a Pinkerton detective. Matthew is trying to figure out how to rescue lost souls, so he can become an effective pastor.

They're both earnest, a little light on life experience, & slightly bumbling, and eventually decide to work together - especially since Calista's surrounded by relatives trying to keep her out of trouble despite herself. It makes for both funny and occasionally dangerous situations. It did feel a little laggy toward the middle, but nothing excessive.

It's an enjoyable story that has a bit of a twist at the end to keep you second-guessing things along the way - I totally recommend it!

*Romance level: sweet kisses, nothing graphic

*Religion: Christian, but organic to the story & not heavy-handed at all

I really enjoyed this book! I think my favorite part of this novel was the characters. They are spunky, independent, fierce, and endearing and I liked Calista and Matthew instantly. Their banter throughout the story is entertaining and fun to read. I liked their interactions and their growth. The addition of the mystery and suspense of the novel only serves to make the story even richer and deeper, and some of the levity is broken up with the hilarious scrapes that Calista finds herself in throughout the story. The spiritual theme of finding God’s calling is clear in the novel and really applicable to my own life. I greatly enjoyed this novel and look forward to more in the series! There is a novella that preludes this book but it is not absolutely necessary to read that first. However, I highly recommend both the novella and this new novel!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

I enjoyed Ms. Jennings writing style. It makes reading her books very enjoyable. In fact I mistakenly picked up the first I read of her books thinking it was a different author. As I read I kept thinking how much better this one was than the last I'd read. It was only after I finished that I realized she was not the same author. And this Ms. Jennings was so much better.

I liked the main characters. Calista is a strong female that doesn't seem to have much fear, even when she maybe should. And she is determined to do something good with her life. Matthew also has those same desires. He is determined and desires to do good in the world. They both learn a lot over the course of the book.

I also loved the secondary characters. Calista's family seems to be filled with fun characters and some parts of the family are particularly quirky. Loved the cousins and the grandmother. It appears that this series will all take place in Joplin. I hope that means some of these fun characters get their own books.

As far as the missing persons mystery goes, I kinda figured it out before the reveal but I wasn't entirely correct. Saying anything more than that would be a spoiler.

There are some Christian themes in the story which were perfectly natural in these characters. No big sermons in your face.

I'm giving this 5 stars because I really can't think of anything that I just didn't like about it. It was an enjoyable read.

Sex: leering, propositioning - not overly graphic
Language: no
Violence: yes - not overly graphic

Fans of Jen Turano will love Regina Jennings' Courting Misfortune. Calista York is an independent, young woman of means who is an undercover Pinkerton agent-in-training looking for a Chicago mobster's missing daughter who was last reported as being seen in Joplin, Missouri. Matthew Cook, new to Joplin, is a young pastor called to work with the miners hoping to strike it rich in the ore fields, miners who frequented Joplin's bars, gambling halls, and brothels. Matthew and Calista both want to serve God by helping others, but will that calling unite or separate them? Jennings has the perfect mix of history, romance, humor, and mystery. The full cast of fun, quirky characters make for a fabulous, fun read. I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy of Courting Misfortune from Bethany House via NetGalley without obligation. Absolutely fantastic!!! That’s how I feel about “Courting Misfortune,” the new book by Regina Jennings. Calista York is a refreshing female lead who is trying to develop her career in an area most often dominated by men. Matthew Cook is the missionary who is trying to make a difference in Joplin, Missouri, a town that appears deep in sin. Calista is sent to Joplin where she must discover the whereabouts of Lila Seaton, who has been kidnapped. Jennings does so much more than just tell a story. She entertains the reader in a way that keeps one thinking and laughing and loving all at the same time. Her addition and development of the characters that make up Calista’s family in the Joplin area put this story over the top and add an element that keeps the reader smiling.

Courting Misfortune begins Regina Jennings new Joplin Chronicles, which is a series based in the rough mining town of Joplin, Missouri in the late 1890s. Calista York is the daring, yet somewhat naïve heroine of the story whose eagerness and escapades endear readers to her dangerous and comedic life as an undercover Pinkerton operative. The mission that Calista faces holds more danger than merely finding the kidnapped daughter of a dangerous mob boss. Calista must go undercover to find this missing woman in her hometown. Not only must she face dangerous groups and nefarious people, but Calista has to keep her family from discovering her true reason for being back in Joplin. If Calista can successfully complete this case, she will be able to finally become a full-fledged Pinkerton detective. Can Calista find Lila Seaton unharmed before others get to her?
A chance encounter leaves Calista sitting across the table from a young and pleasant missionary pastor, Matthew Cook. Calista doesn't know if she should be infuriated by his interference with her mission or appreciative of his concern for her safety. Regardless, Calista must not let Matthew see through her disguise and the many inconsistencies with her excuses and stories. In his young life, Matthew Cook had never experienced the wide array of corruption that he now sees vividly in his new mission field of Joplin. The only confusing thing to Matthew is his suspicion that Calista isn't as truly down-trodden and far from truth as she pretends to be. When Calista keeps changing her story, Matthew becomes more and more suspicious of her true motives and her heart. Can Matthew help her to see the truth? Will he be able to help her to keep away from the danger she always seems to be drowning in? Will he be able to keep his heart from being tangled with hers? Can Calista find this young lady and help save her life without letting her disguise slip?
Courting Misfortune was a very entertaining, wholesome, and hilarious tale full of intrigue, romance, mystery, adventure, faith, family, and much more. I truly enjoyed the constantly changing and adventurous plot and the relatable and realistic characters that Ms. Jennings crafted for this book. As much as I enjoyed the plot, characters, and well-crafted storyline, I honestly appreciated the strong themes of family, faith, and humor that Ms. Jennings filled this work with. I am a fan of her writings, but I particularly enjoyed this exciting tale full of danger, humor, and of course a sweet love story. I hope you have the opportunity to read and enjoy Courting Misfortune as much as I have. Happy readings!

Calista York is a probationary Pinkerton agent searching for the kidnapped daughter of a Chicago mobster somewhere in the rowdy city of Joplin, Missouri. She must work undercover to save the missing girl from harm, and nothing can stop her-- not her nosy extended family in the area, the seedy crowd of miners and fallen women of Joplin, and especially not the handsome missionary determined to keep her safe.
Matthew Cook is a missionary trying to reach out to the fallen community known as “wicked Joplin.” When he learns that the local children’s home is raffling off a baby to raise money, he is determined to stop the spectacle while continuing his Christian outreach to the unruly miners he befriends. The only thing that could possibly distract him is the confounding and beautiful Calista York, who always seems to be hiding something and getting herself into trouble.
Can these two find a way to face their feelings for each other with such important missions on their hearts? And will they be able to intervene and help those who need it the most?
Regina Jennings delivers a spunky and exciting tale full of adventure and romance that keeps you intrigued until the very last page. This was an extremely enjoyable and upbeat read with just enough danger and mystery to make it exciting. A cast of colorful, offbeat, and sometimes exasperating characters like Calista’s cousins bring humor to adventurous plot, but did try my patience at times. This may very well be the intention because they annoy our hero and heroine to no end! Calista’s recklessness and Matthew’s overrighteous attitude at the beginning were not quite to my liking, but their character arcs show growth and maturity in the end, which makes the book less predictable and therefore much more entertaining. The romance between the two was both sweet and swoon-worthy! There were some great scenes between the two that made this such a well-written love story. Both the romance between the two charcters and the overall plot had twists and surprises that made this book impossible to put down. I loved this tale of adventure, mystery, and romance from Regina Jennings, and I cannot wait for the next books in the series!

From Calista’s drive as a Pinkerton agent and ability to back herself into corners to Matthew’s heart to reach lost souls in a town full of darkness, Courting Misfortune drew me in. Calista’s extended family kept me there.

Regina Jennings has once again written a historical romance full of wit, humor, and memorable characters with an underlying thread of mystery to solve. And the theme of finding your calling is clear throughout the novel.

If you’re looking for an engaging read that will make you laugh out loud at moments, look no further.

Regina Jennings takes a whole new look at the Pinkerton agency in this one of a kind, baby raffling, laugh out loud historical novel filled with romance, a darling hero, a determined heroine, and her meddling family.

I have been looking forward to reading this book since it first came out, how could I not with a title like "Courting Misfortune" and a cover that just jumps out begging to be read?!

Calista York is the kind of character that I would not expect to like as much as I did, only because I did not think there would be as much character development as Jennings so carefully wove throughout her newest novel.

I knew I loved Matthew Cook from the start, he is the kind of hero that I like reading about, (but may or may not love in real life, ;)) and I love seeing how like-minded characters come to have their own romance even when it is unexpected.

With an abundance of missteps, numerous tales woven and nearly forgotten, and twists that will keep you guessing this historical work of fiction is one I am happy to say I highly recommend.

Content: Dealings with prostitution, and other likewise topics.

I always enjoy novels by Regina Jennings. I can always count on her to provide me with a mostly fun read with unique characters, witty dialogue, precarious situations, and of course a potential romance that could have a few hurdles to overcome. Courting Misfortune it all and more.

Calista is living the life she always dreamed of as a Pinkerton detective. At least she hopes that her latest assignment will prove her skills once and for all to the agency. The only problem is that the assignment is in her hometown and it could be well nigh impossible to keep her secrets from the family members she is bound to encounter while there. Not only does she run into several of them rather quickly but she continues to cross paths with one Matthew Cook, a country preacher who feels called to win souls for the Lord in the sinful city of Joplin, Missouri. He is uncertain about what to think of Calista but finds himself drawn to her and to be her protector.

I thoroughly enjoyed this tale and found myself chuckling more than once at the antics of her interfering cousins. The author did a wonderful job describing Joplin’s past and her insight into the lives of the miners and their families was revealing. Home Bible studies and baby raffles do not quite seem to belong in the same story but I loved how everything came together to work out perfectly. Plenty of plot twists and surprises were enough to keep things moving and hold the interest of most any reader.

If you enjoy historical fiction with a touch of humor and a bit of mystery and intrigue topped off with a generous helping of romance, the Courting Misfortune is the perfect book for you.

Calista York feels a calling to become a Pinkerton agent and help save people. While undercover on a case, she finds herself in a seedy part of town. Matthew Cook is in Joplin trying to save the lost sheep. When he runs into Calista, he gets tangled up in quite a mess.

I loved how unique this story was and that I didn’t know what would happen next. There were a number of things I didn’t see coming.

This book is connected to Graham and Willow’s story in Intrigue a la Mode (Harvey House Brides), but it can be read as a standalone. Intrigue a la Mode is an excellent story, so I suggest reading it. 🙂

Calista has a large family and at the beginning it got a little confusing with all the characters, but they were all different. I enjoyed learning about each family member.

This book was a good lesson in not judging people. You never know what someone else is going through, and you often don’t have the full story.

I enjoyed reading the author’s note at the end and learning about the history and research that went into the writing of this book.

This was a great start to a new and interesting series.

I was so excited to find out that Regina Jennings has a new series coming out at the end of this year. I was even more so when I had the opportunity to read the first book from The Joplin Chronicles series, Courting Misfortune. I was not disappointed. What a fun read! I was entertained by the history and mystery, as well as, the laughs. I could not put it down. It is so very good.

I am giving Courting Misfortune a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy clean historical romance. I look forward to the next installment from The Joplin Chronicles series.

I received Courting Misfortune from the author, but was not required to write a reviw. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

I loved this book! Just when I thought we were nearing the end, it kept going. There was danger, heartfelt human connection and a good picture of the human heart. I loved some of the predicaments that each character found themselves in, this is not a normal storyline!

This book was so fun to read! I enjoyed watching Calista try to find a balance between being herself and being a Pinkerton. The best operatives seem to have a little bit of themselves mixed in to their disguises, but when Calista is surrounded by her big and boisterous family the lines tend to get even more blurred. I loved hanging out with her unique family. Far from being a society lady like her, they tended to be blunt and truthful to a fault. I just couldn’t get enough of them. Calista and Matthew shared a great connection, and I enjoyed watching their chemistry. Seeing a seedier side of town was a unique adventure, and I could easily imagine a woman getting herself in way over her head. I loved seeing Matthew as a pastor and his heart to help those around him. I could picture his outrage about the “baby raffle” and couldn’t imagine someone actually doing that! I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Romance. I received a copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers and was in no way forced to post a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

The story takes place in 1898, featuring a strong female lead who’s flying by the seat of her pants, determined to keep the stories straight that she’s telling people; like the one about her being a nurse. How could she pull that off when she fainted at the sight of blood? She would make it work because Calista was trying to become a full-fledged Pinkerton operative. Currently she was an agent in training but not for long. This is the first book in the Jopling Chronicles series where readers get to know Calista York, her family and how she uses her agent skills. Things were going ok until Calista takes a missing person’s job in her hometown Chicago. She tries to keep her family in the dark as to what she’s up to, but they are everywhere, literally. Calista likes to keep things simple and business like, but she finds that almost impossible with family around. Her family is a hoot.

Matthew is new to the city; he is a pastor trying to get to know the locals. In order to do this he starts to work in the mines. Matthew learns a lot and gets to know the men better. He hopes to invite them to a bible study in his small cottage. Matthew genuinely cares. Then there is a whole thing with a baby raffle that Calista and Matthew cannot believe is taking place and the whole town is embracing it.

Calista is determined to keep the main thing the main thing but there are so many unexpected distractions. One of them being a handsome man named Matthew. Both Calista and Matthew are willing to give their all to make a difference in the world and help the people around them.

I enjoyed Calista’s quirky family, especially her grandmother; she is fun. I liked both main characters, their witty dialogue, an array of quirky minor characters that make you smile, and a wonderful blend of mystery, clean romance, with splash of suspense. This is a delightful, light-hearted, fun getaway, that will have you smiling in the end.

I really enjoyed this first book in the Joplin Chronicles series! It was extremely interesting learning the history of a town I've been through many times. The heroine was spunky and clever. I loved the premise of her being a Pinkerton agent on a case in her hometown. It created a lot of conflict, especially when a handsome missionary comes onto the scene.

The author did an excellent job setting the stage for this series with a cast of fabulous side characters - Maisie! - that will hopefully got their time in the spotlight soon! Can't wait for the next story!

I so thoroughly enjoyed Calista's story that for possibly the first time ever, I was disappointed that it was a love story, since that would mean her personal story changes.

Calista's family was an excellent addition to the mix - very "can't live with em, can't live without em." They were sufficiently frustrating, interfering... and protective, helpful and loyal. And hilarious. Honestly, if I could it my way, this story/series would have taken after The Gresham Chronicles, covering many years and multiple family story lines, all woven together, so we could read about the antics the cousins get into over the years and I could have had more of Calista as a Pinkerton.

There was so much to appreciate in this story. The subject matter was surprisingly heavy (kidnapping, human trafficking, prostitution, alcoholism, etc), but balanced with levity at just the right times and in just the right ways. There were moral disagreements between characters without a clear "right" answer, which was a healthy departure from the way moral dilemmas are typically handled. Characters exercised restraint in challenging or tempting situations. Faith, prayer, provision, waiting on answers from God were all present themes and well-applied.

*SPOILERS*
The plot was pretty clear and I felt disappointment simmering under the surface, knowing that Calista's unique and interesting path was going to be coming to a close. Her work as a Pinkerton agent was an original tale and I was so bummed that it was over already. She may have been lacking in a few areas as an operative - putting herself in obvious danger without adequate defense and missing some necessary skills (her fabrication and evasion needed some work, haha) - but reading about a young, resourceful, independent, intelligent female agent in historical times was fascinating.

I was also disappointed in Robert Pinkerton's decision at the end. I'm not sure if this was done to give Calista one clear path, but such an attitude by a pillar of justice was certainly a let down.

My only solace is that this is the first in a series that just HAS to involve more Kentworth cousins, which is a guaranteed good time.

What I Loved:
There’s nothing I love more than a well-crafted mystery. And, boy, was I in for a treat here! I had portions figured out but not the whole thing, so it was a joy to watch it all unravel. I also have a sweet spot for a Pinkerton story. There’s just something fun about the historical setting and the undercover agency.
Add to that a sweet romance and solid Christian characters, and we’re in for an entertaining novel! I also found the historical details about Joplin very interesting.
Truly, I have no complaints. I love reading Jennings because she keeps a solid Christian message while telling an engaging historical romance.

Rating and Recommendations: I’m giving Courting Misfortune 5 stars. I highly recommend it to Christian historical or Pinkerton fans.

This is the first book in the Joplin Chronicles Series set in the very late 1800’s, and it sure promises to be an amazing, fun, laugh out loud and charming Series!
Calista York is a Kansas City girl and an undercover Pinkerton agent in training, and this new assignment she’s been given may be the perfect opportunity to secure her job. A little unexpected, though, as she is sent to Joplin, Missouri, where she has an extended family that may get in the way of her keeping a low profile in order to succeed in her task, which is to rescue Lila Seaton, the kidnapped daughter of a Chicago well known mobster boss.
Matthew Cook is a former farmer turned into a missionary preacher and sent to Joplin, known as a sin city full of many lost souls: gamblers, drunks, women of ill repute, and the miners that still have many things to learn about living a godly life. He sure is having a hard time at it, but things get even more complicated when reckless and captivating Miss York arrives to town and seems to be getting in one scrape after another, always putting herself in danger.
But Calista doesn’t want a man -or anyone else- interfering in her investigation. But it seems that instead of keeping her identity undercover, she is attracting more attention than she ought to… That is, if she wants to find the mobster’s daughter and finally get the recognition she craves.
Things get more complicated as the local people organize a raffle for the orphanage, where the prize is a baby, and Calista’s name is entered in the drawing. Can you see the trouble brewing? And will Calista ever find Lila, before she ends up kidnapped herself or worse? Will she and Matthew, opposites as they are, ever have a chance of acknowledging their growing feelings? I won’t spoil the story, you’ll have to read it for yourself to find out. I’ll just say it was a delightful journey, full of everything I love in my novels: sweet romance, humor and laugh out loud moments, mixed with intrigue and danger. The plot kept me engaged the whole time. There are unexpected twists and lots of action and funny moments. The romance is sweet and clean, a bit hard for them to let down their walls, but so endearing. Most of all, I loved the characters: Calista’s spunky, naïve and straightforward nature had me smiling a lot. And Matthew was funny and too, especially because he took everything so seriously, and how he sees Calista as a lost sheep at first. His feeling of helplessness is deep, and he will have to learn and mature in regard as what is most important in his mission. Calista will be a help in that. They both have heart of gold and are selfless and interested in. helping others. The book has an inspiring message that wasn’t preachy at all.
The secondary characters, especially Calista’s cousins, were a wonderful addition and made the story more fun and enjoyable. I can see some characters in this book getting their long story later in this Series.
The book is well written, the descriptions enough detailed for me to transport myself to Joplin and the characteristics of the place and people in that era.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone! It was delighful and endearing! A great escape for these days!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Wow, what an exciting start to the Joplin Chronicles series. I was very intrigued as I went forth reading this and it was a quick read for me. I have read books about Pinkerton Agents before but not about a woman one and it piqued my interest all the more.
Calista's family is lovely, helpful maybe to the extent of being too helpful but I enjoyed getting to know all of them. Her family would stick by her through the thick and the thin.
I must say I really enjoyed Calista's character, she's just doing what she believes will bring her success for the case, what her heart tells her is the right hing to do even though it may make her seem like not the most likable person. Matthew is spunky and stands up for what he believes in,always looking for the best in a person especially Calista.
I enjoyed the faith filled message in this book as well.
The author uses humor to balance out the story . Fun,entertaining and I really enjoyed the history lesson on Joplin and the mines.
So looking forward to reading more in this series.

Courting Misfortune is another delightful story by Regina Jennings. This comes as no surprise to me since I've gotten to know her writing through her Fort Reno Series.

Not only filled with mystery, humor, romance, and quirky characters, it has strong spiritual themes that are prevalent. Matthew is a man on a mission. Literally. God has called him to the ungodly city of Joplin, Missouri, to help turn men from their sinful ways. I loved his strong faith and his desire to follow God's calling even though it appeared his work was unfruitful. His diligence in following the Lord was admirable.

One of my favorite scenes was when Calista, who had a room at a six-story hotel next to the cottage he rented, spied on him when he spent the morning in the garden praying and studying his Bible. I also loved watching him live his faith every day. Willing to step into the shoes of the miners he sought to reach.

Calista also had a calling. Hers was to fight the evil in the world by using her detecting skills as a Pinkerton. She was so delightful! I loved the way she used her seeming innocence to ferret out information. Her secrets were a source of great consternation to Matthew and her family.

I laughed aloud at Calista's cousins, Amos and Masie! I hope that they appear in future stories. Their initial meeting with Matthew was so funny! While there were, in fact, many laugh-out-loud moments, they were well-balanced with the weightier matters of the miners' struggles.

If you enjoy historical fiction with a strong Christian message, you won't want to miss Courting Misfortune.

This is book one in the Joplin Chronicles series, what a great place to start. Calista York comes from a unique, loving and involved family. While she tries to hid her true job, it may be harder than she thinks once she is assigned a job near family. Matthew Cook was a little harder character for me to connect with, but when I did I liked him. This book is full of misunderstanding, mystery, history, family and romance. I look forward to reading book two in this series. I look forward to learning more about the characters that we met in this series.

Undercover Lady!

It is 1898, and Calista lives and breathes to be a Pinkerton agent. But she is still under probation for the job, and must prove herself to become a full-fledged operative. She goes to Joplin, Missouri, undercover, to see if she can find a woman whose last known location was there. The area is notorious for the large number of women working in the world's oldest profession. Is the missing woman part of that, and how can Calista safely infiltrate the operation?

While trying to figure that out, she is sidetracked by her many relatives that live in the area. Will they blow her cover? Can she convince them she is there for something else so she doesn’t have to reveal her true reason for coming?

Calista has many mishaps with her family, along with the new preacher, Matthew, who has set his sights on saving Calista from the bad lifestyle he believes her to be living.

Serious and dangerous situations are paired with some funny episodes that make this an exciting story. Can Calista keep her job as a Pinkerton agent, and, at the same time, have a relationship with Matthew? Will she be able to keep her true identity from him until she solves this case?

The reader will find themselves on the edge of their seat from the tale’s action and thrills, but also laughing at hilarious antics Calista finds herself a part of. Christian faith also plays a part in this book. Fans of well-written, fast-paced stories with a sprinkling of humor, will love this five-star story.

I really enjoyed everything about this book! The cover is beautiful, the story is very well written and hard to put down and the characters are very relatable. This is the first book in the new Joplin Chronicles and it promises to be an exciting series! One of my favorite things about the book was how much each character grew throughout the story. Calista feels like she needs to prove herself and solve this case (she is still on probation). So she will do almost anything to solve this kidnapping and rescue the girl; however, her constant (and inconsistent) lies are getting her into trouble and her family is making it almost impossible for her to do her job. She also wasn’t expecting to meet Matthew.

Matthew knows that God has called him to be a preacher to the mining community in Joplin, MO; however, he didn’t realize how hard it was to actually get people to listen to him. He is a bit naïve, but has a good heart and genuinely cares about the miners and their families. When he keeps bumping into Calista, he knows that God wants him to help her, but how do you help someone who doesn’t want your help?

Overall, I loved everything about his book – especially liked the end (I didn’t see it coming!) This story has so much packed in between it’s covers – a baby raffle (who would think that is a reasonable solution to an orphanage problem!!), hilarious cousins, romance, some laugh out loud moments and even a bit of intrigue. I definitely recommend this book if you like historical romance or if you just want to start a new series that will definitely make you laugh.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars!

This debut novel in Regina Jennings new series, The Joplin Chronicles, was delightful. I especially enjoyed learning about the background of Joplin, Missouri and it's rough and tumble start. Calista is a probationary Pinkerton agent whose case is to find the kidnapped daughter of a crime boss whose last known whereabouts was Joplin. Calista's bumbles at attempting to find a job in Joplin and to locate the missing daughter lead to hilarious high jinks that kept my interest from start to finish. With twists and turns throughout, along with a budding romance, this well written novel would please historical fiction readers.

Courting Misfortune takes us into the belly of Joplin, Missouri, a town that needs a lot of help and guidance. That is why preacher Matthew Cook has come to town. He has heard of the immorality and wants to offer hope to the miners and the women of questionable reputations.

Calista York comes to Joplin as a Pinkerton agent looking for a missing, kidnapped girl. The girl's picture haunts Calista, but Calista also wants to prove herself a capable agent, as capable as any man. And she needs to work this case on her own. However, Calista's family lives near Joplin and she can't hide from them. I don't even know how to explain her family. They are quite a bunch and bring much needed humor to this story. With a family like that you should never be lonely. I liked them, their oddities, closeness, and camaraderie.

Matthew is drawn to Calista and tries to save her from herself. Calista must continue to act as a ridiculous young lady as she searches out the nightlife for the missing girl, poor Matthew is only trying to protect her. As he also tries to stop a most ridiculous and bordering on illegal if not certainly unethical plan that the children's home has come up with to raise money.

Two people come to Joplin to help others. Both have pure intentions just very different missions. Neither one of them expected to fall in love. This was a fun one. I look forward to more of author Jennings humorous and slightly dangerous stories in the town of Joplin that is in serious need of redemption.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

Fun and faith-filled:
This was an enjoyable, lighthearted book. Nothing too deep so good if you are just looking for a quick read to entertain and lift your spirits. Whilst there are some serious and sad moments, overall it is a story of hope and redemption.
It was fun seeing Matthew and Calista fall in love even though circumstances often conspired against them, especially as she had to keep her true identity hidden from him for so long. I enjoyed seeing Calista try to make her way as a female Pinkerton agent and I loved her tenacity and spunk! There was a nice faith filled message that I think would resonate with many readers today.
This is the first book in the series and it looks like there could be plenty more crazy times ahead for the residents of Joplin. I look forward to reading all upcoming books by this talented author.

I loved this book. Calista York is a new Pinkerton operative and she want to succeed and solve her case but she is sent back to the bastion of her family where her grandmother has an eye on everything that is going on and her well meaning cousins, aunts and uncles all keep showing up and throwing a monkey wrench into the works. On top of that a young man named Matthew Cook who came to the area as a Pastor / Missionary to the miners keeps trying to convert and already converted Calista but she can’t blow her cover.

This book had some funny moments, some sad moments, and some annoying moments but it was well researched and a good historical as well as “love story.” I would highly recommend this to other readers.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from NetGalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Calista York is undercover. When she was sent to work on a case in an area where many of her family members live, she could not figure out. How hard could it be to find one woman? Very hard when you have meddling relatives and a need to act opposite of how you are in real life. She definitely confuses Matthew Cook who is trying to start a church for the Joplin area miners. At one point, she is spouting Scripture, then she is entering into places that are not fit for a lady? Is Calista able to solve the case?

This was an original story full of mystery, history and humor. While there were a few uncertain moments, this was not really a suspenseful book. But the reader does try to solve the case. (I figured out parts of the storyline.) I loved the fact that the author included historic episodes into a minor part of the plot. And there were many parts of the story that were laugh out loud funny. (Charades anyone?)

Faith is also an important part of the book. Pastor Matthew wants to make a difference being a part of everyday life with those he is trying to serve. What drives Calista to want to be an operative is because she truly wants to make a difference in the lives of others. This book reminds me of the idea that our deeds need to show our beliefs.

I have not read any books by this author before. I would definitely read more. A big thank you to Bethany House Publishers and to NetGalley for letting me read a copy of this book. All opinions are my own, and the review was my idea.

Jennings has written a historical romance that has humor and wonderful characters with an undercurrent of intrigue and mystery. This novel is set in the late 1890s and it promises to be an exciting and adventurous series. Calista is an undercover Pinkerton agent in training who has been sent to Joplin, MO. to find a kidnapped daughter of a Chicago mobster. Her only drawback is her large, influential family that lives in Joplin, threatens to hinder her work as she is working undercover. Matthew is a farm boy who’s followed God’s calling to Joplin to preach and minister. He is instantly attracted to Calista and she to him, but she cannot get too close because she is not who she says she is. There is much within the pages to keep you interested, scenes like pretending to be looking for work as into seedy bars, volunteering at an orphanage, Bible studies in Matthew’s little cottage and of all things,a baby raffle. …. If you enjoy well-written, fun historical romance, you will definitely enjoy this book……I received an ecopy of the book from Bethany House Publishers via NetGalley and was under no obligation to post a positive review. A sweet read with great characters and twists. Regina Jennings is a favorite author -- a launch to the top of my to be read pile with each new release. Courting Misfotune shifts to Joplin in its heyday of crime and chaos. This romp will keep your attention as Calista tries to prove herself -- that she has indepedent value. Matthew wants to improve the lives of those around him as a missionary. There's such a sweet intensity to him. I really enjoyed their story.

Calista York is a probationary Pinkerton detective who needs one more good case solving to earn her permanent position. Her case sends her to rough-and-tumble Joplin, Missouri in search of kidnapped Lila Seaton, the daughter of a mob boss and suspected of being forced into prostitution. As Calista begins her search in unsavory places, she keeps running into Matthew, a young missionary determined to rescue those in Joplin heading down the wrong path. Matthew isn’t sure what to make of Calista. Her actions and her words don’t always add up, and he’s pretty sure she’s spouting all kinds of lies, but he can’t figure out her motives. She’s also putting herself in all kinds of danger, and despite himself, Matthew grows a little more attached to her every day. Calista is juggling a lot... her search, remembering who she told what story, her meddlesome cousins and grandmother, and the far-too-handsome pastor. But secrecy is key, and she is determined to earn her job as a Pinkerton and to save Lila, no matter the cost. But is the cost too great?

Courting Misfortune is the first book in Regina Jennings’ Joplin series. I always enjoy Regina’s books, though they never quite rush to the top of my TBR for some reason. I got a copy of this one from Netgalley and I moved it up on the stack, and here we are! I usually blow through books, but for some reason this one took me awhile to get through. I think it might have been Calista, though I liked her spirit and her desire to do the right thing, she far too often “courted misfortune” and took unnecessary risks with her safety and reputation. I definitely found myself siding with Matthew often! I feel like she could have used her family connections, used her connection with Matthew and his friends to have gone about her investigation in a far less deceptive and risky manner. That’s definitely it, my struggles with the book I think boil down to this point. All the deception in the book seemed so unnecessary. I understand the secrecy of the Pinkertons, but surely Calista could have let a few trustworthy people in on it far sooner (because eventually she did anyway). She would have had so much less danger and insult and far greater success in her important mission. She spent far too long getting nowhere in her search pretending to be all different types of characters.

The story definitely did pick up as you got in deeper, and I did read the climax all at once. It was the getting there that took awhile, but I am glad I stuck with it. I did really like Matthew, though like Calista, there are choices I wish he would have made along the way that would have made more sense and would have made things easier for everyone. I loved his heart for the people and his style of friendship evangelism that brought about slow and steady, but truly effective, ministry.

In conclusion, I enjoyed the story and look forward to the rest of the series, but I don’t know that I would re-read it as I would some of Regina’s other stories I have enjoyed more.

I received a copy of this story from the publisher and Netgalley for the purpose of review. My thoughts are my own.

It’s always a pleasure to read one of Regina Jennings’ books. This author knows how to tell a fun, compelling story with wonderful characters, and this book is one of her best. Calista York is a wonderful main character who is spunky, intelligent, and caring. Matthew Cook was the perfect counterpoint to Calista, and their story is an interesting one. There are twists in this storyline that kept me eagerly turning pages to see what Calista was going to do next. I admired her steadfastness to do what she felt was right, and how she was willing to do that even at a high personal cost. This book is an excellent example of Christian historical fiction that is well-written and inspiring.

Regina Jennings has quickly became a favorite of mine after reading her novella in The Kissing Tree collection. When I saw she had a new book coming out, I excitedly jumped on it, and was not disappointed!

The banter in Courting Misfortune is well done - I’ve gotten to where I love banter in a book as long as it isn’t forced, and Jennings let’s the conversations flow naturally between her characters.

The plot moves along wonderfully, and the character development leaves nothing to be desired.

Courting Misfortune is only the second book I have had the chance to read by Regina Phillips, but it certainly won't be the last. This was a great way to kick off a series and I for one cannot wait to read more.

In Courting Misfortune, we travel back to the late 1890s where we meet Calista- a probationary Pinkerton agent seeking the missing daughter of a mob boss and Matthew- a missionary taking on the rather chaotic city of Joplin, Missouri. I have found that when it comes to historical fiction, I so enjoy female characters who are independent and full of sass, and that was certainly the case for Calista. Not always likeable, but certainly entertaining. I enjoyed the humor within the story. History fans will enjoy getting to know some of the rather unique history of Joplin as well. Overall, I found it to be a good blend of romance, history, humor and adventure. If you enjoy historical fiction, this is certainly one worth checking out.

**Book received for consideration. All thoughts are my own.

Calista is in training as a Pinkerton agent. She was sent on a mission to find a kidnapped young lady she is sent into a rowdy town full of miners and questionable characters. A young preacher decides she is a young lady headed for trouble and their paths are destined to cross frequently. This is full of mishaps, troubles, secrets and a little romance. Serious happenings but some oh so fun mishaps that kept me reading and wondering just what Calista would get into next. I requested a copy through NetGalley , no review was required. My review is voluntary.

What a fun historical mystery! I've always had a fascination with reading books about the Pinkerton so this book was perfect for me. I absolutely loved following along with the mystery and romance. It was such an interesting story that I will definitely be rereading again in the future!

Regina Jennings is a great author and I really enjoyed this book! After being introduced to the main character in a previous novella, I knew I wanted to read more about her.
While Calista was great, I loved Matthew! Her character grew on me, just as she grew in the story, but Matthew was strength and integrity from the beginning.
I’m so glad there will be more books in this series!

It took me a little bit to get into the story, but it picked up momentum and then was hard to put down. I had to know what happened. Calista is on a kidnapping case, undercover, but in a town where much of her family lives. So much had been fabricated for her in order to do the research she needed. Matthew is a preacher who felt called to the same town. He couldn't figure Calista out, but realized she was putting herself in danger. Subtle humor inserts when her cousins come into the scenes. God's plans orchestrate each of their paths, leading to an interesting and unexpected conclusion .

Calista York is a probationary Pinkerton Agent with everything to prove. When her boss sends her after a kidnapped woman, she must go undercover. But working so close to her grandmother’s ranch puts in her hot water with the family, and the handsome preacher living next door to her hotel.

I love Calista. The push-pull of her situation keeps her, and readers, off kilter the whole story. Every time she thinks she has a step forward, her family or preacher Matthew Cook throw a wrench in her plans. Her bravery and desire to do whatever necessary to find the kidnapped girl is incredibly commendable. If only she could tell Matthew and her family so they wouldn’t think her wayward ways were real.

Matthew is a bit more challenging to get to know. On one hand he is an over-zealous missionary and yet in someways naive. Attempting to help Calista complicates things in a good way and I like how his determination to do to good is at the root of all his actions. It makes him the perfect hero opposite Calista.

Courting Misfortune is a fun historical romance set in the troubled city of Joplin, Missouri. Nothing in that town is as black and white as it seems.
