Description

No one should ever be on a date wondering if they have actual magpie poo mixed with snow in their hair, running down their back, and soaking into their underwear.

After three years under the thumb of a cretinous boss who’s sucked all the joy out of working a 9-to-5 job, twenty-eight-year-old Kendall Whitney has had enough. She flees San Francisco, her annoying roommates, and her overbearing mother, and takes refuge in Bozeman, Montana, where it feels like the big sky’s the limit.

Safely ensconced in her best friend’s guest room, she promptly launches a three-pronged plan: to live alone for the first time in her life, develop a successful graphic design career, and figure out what she wants in a relationship.

She embarks upon Operation Kendall Independence, only to realize that she doesn’t know the first thing about adulting. Hangovers, homemaking, freelancing, friendships, and modern cowboys bent on monogamy . . . it’s enough to send a single girl running for the gin & tonics.

With self-deprecating charm and endearing humor, Adventures of an Urban Homesteader is the raucous and heartwarming diary of a young woman who’s determined to seek stability and security on her own terms, and to make her own safety net in case she fails.

No one should ever be on a date wondering if they have actual magpie poo mixed with snow in their hair, running down their back, and soaking into their underwear.

After three years under the thumb...

Advance Praise

"1- An entertaining tale of a young lady's adventures on her way to becoming ""an independent young American woman"". What I especially enjoyed about this story - it's amusing situations - completely relatable - with easy bite size entries. Very light and uplifting and it put a smile on my face! An amusing pleasure to read!

2 -Like peeking in your best friend's diary. Whether you're a young professional, starting life, or a seasoned Pro, long beyond those early struggles, there's a lot to laugh about, and think, oh yeah, I can relate to that. Fun, fun read, whether a Summer beach read or a Winter cozy, a new author to watch

3- This is a delightful, laugh out loud, big city girl meets the small-town story. I also love that this is a coming of age for the late twenties which isn't focused solely on finding a man. It's about a young woman finding independence from her family and former location, finding confidence in her career and professional abilities, and yes finding friendship and love. It's a great story of growth while keeping you laughing until your belly hurts. I absolutely loved this book and found myself staying up way too late to finish it. I highly suggest this and am looking forward to seeing more from this very talented debut author! Buy it, you'll love it."

I adored this. I am a similar age to the protagonist and found large parts of it very relatable as well as laugh out loud funny.

Ha! Laugh out loud funny! I just couldn't get enough of this story. Seriously the funniest book of "adulting" I've ever read. I don't recall becoming an adult being as difficult as it is appears to be for the younger generation. Just put one foot in front of the other... and fall flat on your face---sometimes! Eventually you get the hang of it. It's quite the adventure tale, with romance. Fun book!

A funny and heartfelt book about changing your life. Sometimes it doesn’t happen like you plan it in your head and that’s okay.

This was super cute and light. When Kendall wants to leave her big life in the city she chooses to follow her friend to Bozeman Montana and start a life living on her own. I feel like a lot of us did this this year with the quarantine learning how to be alone and fix things and being scrappy. So it was super relatable. I liked that we were reading her thoughts in her journal and not like a narrator telling the story. I thought her voice was super relatable when trying ot figure out relationships and housing projects.

I found it hard to believe she was 28. It seemed a bit immature how she called condoms man wrappers, and vibrators fun sticks. At first I thought it was funny then she called them that throughout the entire book and it sounded like what a teenager calls a condom because they are embarrassed. But at the same time she was parenting her mom and sister at some point so it was a bit confusing.

Overall I'd give this book a 3.75. It wasn't mind blowing but it was enjoyable and transported me away from this crazy time.

The author wrote a witty dialogue that keeps you turning the pages to see what else Kendall is going to get herself into! She finds herself living alone and that being a responsible adult is not always going to be a walk in the park!

Kendalls journey of big girl adulthood comes with many dramas and the author weaves in some hilarious moments and growing up for her character!

To avoid any spoilers you have to read this book if you want some laughs and romance!

I received an advanced copy from NetGalley and these are my willingly given thoughts and opinions.

Ah Montana - the mountains, the cows and cowboys that you need for them, and then there is the cold! Lots of cold. Bozeman where our heroine moves to, is noted for being trendy - and snow can fall for 3/4 or more of the year! So coming from San Francisco was surely quite a shock to her. Clearly hadn't invested in the correct undergarments - try Uniqlo in future... they even have self-heating jeans.
I liked the format of the book and the writing style was engaging and fun. Her 'adventures' with cows and cowpats and 'wild' creatures were amusing and I liked her friends and her boyfriends.
This was a lively book to read and enjoy in the less than freezing temperatures of Southern UK where you can giggle at our current 17 degree c in mid November and all the flowers blooming – and no need to put on woollies – wellies yes thought as it has rained a lot!
Oh and do look up the blog from High Country News which gives 10 reasons not to move to Bozeman – funny. The author is debunking all the people who say move to Bozeman for the laid back life etc. A small paradise it is often said.
So number 1 reason is the Name – lame.. and number 2 is the weather… it has been known to snow heavily in June. That said, snow in the UK comes later – or earlier – in the year, depending on how you look at it, in the South rather than the North, and has frequently snowed on our son’s birthday late April – but only a sprinkling.

Tired of working tirelessly for a boss who doesn't value anyone, family dramas and the hustle and bustle of life in San Francisco, Kendall moves to her best friend's house in Montana, looking for a new life of independence and, who knows, a new love. But would be this process as linear as it seems?

Kendall is one of the most comical characters I have ever met, in fact, she is so clumsy that if we made a list of the most unusual and shameful moments that could happen, she not only would fulfill all the items, she’d actually made things ten times worse. However, one thing that sometimes displeased me was his lack of maturity and over-sensitivity, but the truth is that this is part of the character and helps us to see his great evolution in terms of self-knowledge, self-esteem and personal growth - which was what I liked the most.
With a very fluid narrative, Brooke L. Davis's book is ideal for those moments when we want a light book, with a bit of romance and lots of humor. Without clichés, this book warms our hearts as we read it and leaves us in that lively and cheerful spirit, ideal at this time of the year!

[🇵🇹]

Adventures of an Urban Homesteader is a new twist on the classic coming of age story. Kendall has decided to leave her job, with a boss referred to as "The Toad", in the urban setting of San Francisco. She's ready to start her own graphic design business in the back of beyond, also known as Montana.

Kendall stays with her college roommate until she finds a place to live and a part-time job. We can all sympathise with her as she struggles with the problems of adulting: malfunctioning plumbing, a series of Mr. Wrongs, the soul killing cold of Montana, etc.

I would highly recommend this title to anyone who loves chick lit.

In the interest of full disclosure, I received a free digital copy of this title to review from Net Galley.

Kendall was likeable and the setting of Montana made me want to travel.

It’s fun reading about Kendall trying to figure it out, while also trying to figure out similar things in life, like how to adult. Does anyone actually know how to adult? Just a feel good story for everyone.
