A magical Christmas story in the spirit of Dickens finding redemption at this special time of year.

‘Matty’ is a frail old lady living alone in a rundown house which has a perfect view of the cemetery she finds comfort in, regarding from her rocking chair.
Most mornings a man pops by to check on her, she assumes do odd jobs like clear her path of snow.

The author implies all is not as it seems but there is nothing sinister to be felt. Indeed she is more scared of the children she chastises for sledging near her property. Things change for her when a young girl slips and stumbles in her haste to get away. Left by her friends, long since fled, the only person around to help is Matty herself.

The measure of Christmas and her own memories are tied up in this potential act of kindness.

The writing is beautifully paced and the story progresses with a even spread of clues that all is not fully as it seems. Yet it is written in such a way the reader cannot speculate; I for one wouldn’t want to this is the author’s story, let him tell it.
Indeed I was caught up in it; not just the sentiment that comes where people give and consider others at Christmas but the depth of story. It is really a wonderful tribute to a woman’s struggle to overcome the loss of her husband and family, yet carry on even though broken. It also demonstrates we should never view the elderly as empty vessels or without memories. Often their life holds sadness and regrets we cannot imagine in our rapid, interconnected worlds.

The skill of the writing is that it is so simple; one wonders why we are not all published authors. Then the story twists and turns; and completes a satisfying bow and you feel this guy is perhaps quite good. But with practice I can replicate this type of narrative, then the writer explains how the idea for the story came about and you see the creativity in process and you marvel at how so much joy and hope can be drawn from a short work of fiction.

Ghost stories and the Christmas season seem to go together like crackers and party hats. I loved this story and feel a warm glow in its aftermath and I haven’t touched the Sherry - yet!

An old woman who lives alone learns a valuable lesson at Christmas in DP Conway's short story 'The Ghost of Christmas to Come'. This is a tiny little tale - you can read the whole thing in under an hour, a ghost story that has zero scares but enough feel-good fuzzies to warm your heart and make you smile.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I thought this was very sweet. This old lady all alone till I figured out she was a spirit. When the little girl got hurt and she was able to help. That was very cool. I fet bad for the family when the news was broken to them.

In Massachusetts lives an old woman near a hillside cemetery. She is asked each morning by a man if she is ready to go and she always says no. When it snows, she yells at the kids sledding down the hill to leave as someone might get hurt. The kids run off while calling her names. One day as the kids were running away, one little girl fell. She doesnt get up. Will the old woman help the little girl? What will the little girl do?

This is a story that reminded me of the love of a life with a family in their home. Due to that love, there is a reluctance to leave. It’s a story that questions why someone is reluctant to leave there cherished home. It is full of emotion including love, loss and hope. I remembered how I felt when the government bought the house I grew up in. My parents had to find a new home to live in. For me, it was never the same. I always felt like a visitor in my parents new home. It’s a must read for remembering the love of a home.

The Ghost of Christmas to Come is an endearing novella about an elderly woman named Matty. Matty has experienced devastating loss in her lifetime, and the uncertainty of this life causes her to become a recluse. When an injured girl appears at her doorstep, Matty assists Aubrey in dressing her wounds and calling her parents to retrieve her. Aubrey’s parents are so grateful that they invite Matty over for Christmas Eve dinner. Although they think they are just providing Matty dinner, they end up doing more for her than Matty could have imagined. Although this is a sweet Christmas tale, there is just the right amount of spookiness to keep you reading!

This is my first opportunity to read D.P. Conway's writing, and I was quickly pulled into the story of Matty, an elderly woman living alone in a disheveled house near Cemetary Hill. This short story really impacted me emotionally as my 90-year-old father lives alone and I'd hate for him to be as lonely as Matty is. Her simple act of kindness - far outside her confort zone - puts in motion a life-changing chain of events. I especially loved that this story was inspired by a discovery "accidentally" made in the author's life.

I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. Interesting plot. Kind of spooky, so I think it would be good for Halloween Month 🎃.
