Pepper Basham's Hope Between the Pages is the most exquisite time slip novel I've ever read. Her characters are rich and lively and pop right off the page and into your heart ( I can't decide if I love Oliver or Max more!)

The scenery is lush and floods your every sense, whether it's the fragrance of an English garden or a delicious chocolate delight. And a book about books? Sign me up!

I've read many of her books, but this one is my favorite--until the next one comes my way, I'm sure (actually, this will always be my favorite--just didn't want the other Basham books to feel neglected😀).

So if you catch me staring off into the distance with a dreamy gaze and a tear or two falling... just blame it on a Basham book!

One of the most romantic books of 2021!
The mystery surrounding Blackwells Bookshop & the Biltmore Estate will have readers enchanted from the first chapter. The romance was swoon-worthy and stirred my heart in a big way. There are so many beautiful characters and places described in this story, I feel I have traveled to places yet unknown and came home a wiser, happier person. Lovers of literature will love all of the bookish quotes and references that helped bring this story to life. This one will be one of my top five books of the year! Unforgettable!

It’s so lovely to find an author you’ve not read before but whose writing you now adore. That’s the case with Pepper Basham and her newest hf novel, HOPE BETWEEN THE PAGES. The dual timeline tale works well, skipping between the story of Sadie at the Biltmore Estate in 1915, to Asheville in the present with Clara’s quest to find the deed to Blackwell Bookshop. Romance, a mystery surrounding a 100-year-old love letter, and splendid descriptions of the Vanderbilt’s estate and England’s Peak District keep you rapt. Highly recommended!

Being a reader and having visited libraries since a young girl, this book struck a definite cord with me. Loved the time-slip which was seamlessly done. The characters were well described and you start to enjoy them so much. It was wonderful to see the long ago romance. The scenery lives in your own mind as you read their descriptions. You are there and you see it and feel it.
I loved Sadie who works in the library of the Biltmore estate but is not to be seen. The romance is perfect and sweet. There is so much to enjoy about this book! So happy that I read this exquisite book. There is even a little mystery to follow and it's just good!

I received an ebook copy from NetGalley. All thoughts are my own.

This book pulled me right in from the very first chapter, and I had a hard time putting it down. The split time story is very well handled. I loved the characters (well, except for the “villians”), and was sad to have the book end. The setting of the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC, makes for a wonderful backdrop to the story, and you can look up pictures of it online. If you have a chance to read Basham’s novella, Between Stairs and Stardust, it is also set at the Biltmore Mansion, and has connections with this book through a book of fairy tales called Finding Ever After.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it, especially to those who love books and fairy tales and “real” romance.

This book is part of a series called “Doors to the Past” - visiting historic American landmarks through stories full of mystery, intrigue, faith, and romance.

I received an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of this book with no obligation to post a review

HOPE BETWEEN THE PAGES by PEPPER BASHAM is a beautifully written split time novel which moves effortlessly between Clara Blackwell and her great great grandmother Sadie, and also between Biltmore, Asheville in North Carolina, and Fenwick in Cumbria in the English Lake District. Through it all there is the love of books and reading together with a strong Christian message. The characters are unforgettable, and although there is no doubt that Clara and Sadie are the heroines, I love the author's portrayal of Oliver Camden, Max Weston and Robbie. These men, in my opinion, are real men!
The story starts in 1915 with Sadie Blackwell, a servant working for Mrs Vanderbilt at Biltmore House. She is in charge of the library and chooses books for the various visitors to enjoy during their stay. This is where she meets Oliver, who seems to be a real kindred spirit, although he is way above her, being part of the upper class.
Clara and her mother own Blasckwell's book shop in Biltmore. The shop was started by granny Sadie. In order to keep the shop, Clara goes to England to try and find missing paperwork that will prove that it did indeed belong to Sadie. Here Clara starts on a real life adventure that has all the elements of exciting fiction.
This is all I am going to tell you as I do not want to spoil things for you.
This novel is a real keeper and one I will read more than once. I highly recommend it as a most enjoyable read.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Barbour Publishing. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

Pepper Basham does it again! I was enchanted almost from the first page.
This book, which happens to be her first dual time novel, I believe, is a bit different than her other writings, but it is oh-so-delightful!
Which time period did I like best? Now that is a hard choice!
Sadie Blackwell of the historical one, well she was such a charmer. A servant in the Biltmore Estate, and she worked in the fabulous library. Her job was to stay invisible when guests came around, and to make sure they had the reading materials they were wanting.
And then there's Clara of the current day. A storekeeper in the Blackwell Bookshop. When their bookshop is threatened, Clara is determined to track down the actual history of their bookstore and save it.
These pages sweep you back and forth, into the past, and then back to the present. I loved reading about the Biltmore Estate, and almost feel like I've visited it now....(although I would still like to see it in person). This book also takes you to England, and that was quite the experience.
Both of these heroines, these time periods, have their own bit of romance. Sigh. Both were a bit unexpected, and yet, not so much. But they were just perfect. Pepper Basham has such a way of writing romances. Sweet, swoony, and yet, not overly much, just the right blend.
This book also has a mystery. One that Clara must figure out. And soon…it seems that the future of Blackwell’s Bookshop rather depends on all of this. What exactly happened to Sadie Blackwell? What was her connection to the bookshop? And of course, the ever important matter –where is the deed to the store?
I loved reading as they followed clues and made discoveries. Both of these ladies learned so much, and grew as the story progressed.
For lovers of historical fiction, I would say this is a must read.

What an inspiring book for everyone. As I face uncertainty and challenge in my life I have been inspired to hope again as I read of the things Sadie overcame. It reminded me that God has a special place and purpose for my life and that I need to find that and walk in it.

What a beautiful book this was!

The alternation between two stories, one in the past and one in the present, is not usually my preferred type of narration. Here, however, it worked like a dream. On one side, we have Sadie, a library housemaid in America in 1915, who discreetly shares her love of book with the guests of the house in which she work and thereby captures the attention of Oliver, a young British gentleman. On the other side is Clara, Sadie's great-granddaughter, working to save the bookshop her ancestor opened a century ago and having to travel to England to do so.

Although the trope may seem unoriginal, it was still appealing, in particular for any self-respecting avid reader, who cannot pass the occasion to read about fellow book lovers! The alternance between the two parallel and intersecting stories was masterfully done: while I would usually prefer the historical side in such narration, here, I loved both equally (with perhaps a small preference for today's side, even!) and was always sad to leave Clara or Sadie at the end of each chapter. The fact that Sadie's side was written from her point of view, and Clara's from an external point of view made it easier not to get confused between the two sides. I particularly appreciated that in the very last chapter, Clara gets her own voice and narrates the last part of her story.

"Hope Between the Pages" was poetic, very well written, with many references about books and some quotes. The beautiful way in which it was written allowed us to travel through time and continents with the lovely characters and descriptions. Although not all characters got their happily ever after one would expect in a fairy tale, the life path they took made they grown and allowed us to gain some wise teachings about life, hope, perfection. Sometimes things don't work out the way we wish, but they work out in another way - God's way, for those who believe, like the characters in this book. For the small anecdote, it's funny, on the day I finished it, I received a postcard with the quote "Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together' and it fit this book so marvellously. It's also a good thing to remember in the challenging times we are facing today.

I would have had a hard time believing a book could rightfully get 4.93 stars on Goodreads before reading it, but I see why now, and will had my own 5 stars to it.
After such a fantastic book, it's hard to move on to the next one... But to live up to Oliver, Sadie and Clara's love of books and honour it, I will move on to my next read soon. Perhaps one of the classics quoted in "Hope Between the Pages"?...

'Some dreams required hard work. Others require miracles.'

Pepper Basham brings us a poignant and powerfully told dual time slip novel in Hope Between the Pages. Set in WWI Asheville, we are treated to the wonderful Biltmore estate as most of the setting where servant Sadie Blackwell tends the magnificent Biltmore library and inadvertently becomes a library fairy to a visiting Englishman, also a book lover just as Sadie is.

'In her beloved books, she knew the ending came with a happily-ever-after, for the most part. At least in the books she loved best.'

Present day finds Clara Blackwell owning a book shop passed down to her by her great grandmother Sadie. The discovery of a hundred year old letter has presented a great mystery. A mystery that involves Sadie greatly.

Any book lover, like myself, will adore this enchantingly rich story. Like a beautiful fairy tale, it weaves its magic into your heart and you find yourself weeping at the beautify of it. Highly recommended.

My thanks to the author and publisher for a copy of this book. I received no compensation and the opinion in this review is entirely my own.

Hope Between the Pages is an enchanting split time story set in modern day Asheville, North Carolina and Fenwick, England pre World War 1. Clara Blackwell sought to unravel her great grandmother Sadie’s fairy tale life. As with any fairy tale, there is a villain or two, a wicked witch, a damsel or two in distress, a couple of fairy godmothers and a prince charming or two who came to the rescue. Since this is a split time story separated by one hundred years, most modern day characters have a counterpart in the previous century. I really enjoyed the similarities in generational traits and the discoveries confirmed those ties.

The author did not fix all of the evils that her characters faced which gave the book more of a true to life feeling. My only complaint would the last chapter ended too quickly for my liking!

My favorite quote was from Sadie Blackwell, “Courage wasn’t courage without fear, and as my heart trembled from the uncertainty of the great unknown, I held to God’s assurance. Whatever the future held, He was already there.”

I received an ARC of this book from Barbour Publishing through NetGalley.

This book was honestly beautiful. So much so that I stayed up way later than I should have because I just had to finish!
As is the case with only the best of split time novels I had a hard time deciding if I loved the historical or contemporary more. They were both so beautifully done and intrinsically woven together.
Sadie and Oliver had the purest of relationships, like two halves finding their whole they were made to be together and it was obvious from the very first moment they were on the page together. I refuse to spoil anything but know they had me laughing, melting into a puddle, and crying and I absolutely loved them.
Clara and the contemporary storyline kept me guessing for a good bit as to just where her story was heading but I know better than to worry when it comes to a Basham tale and it hit its stride perfectly and I loved it. When she and Max met it was like all the boxes clicked into place and even though their romance happened in a short amount of time it felt like it was timeless and unfolded beautifully.
The book lover in me was obsessed with the way books were the very heart of these stories and the history nerd was soaking up every bit about the early days of Basham’s beloved Biltmore!
In short I loved this book and Barbour hit the jackpot with this series!

I loved this book! I was hooked as soon as I read the first sentence and my attention was fully engaged throughout the entire story.

In this book the author creates an exquisite fairy tale by using a dual timeline with one thread featuring Oliver and Sadie who met at The Biltmore House in 1915 and the other thread featuring Clara, Sadie’s direct descendant who owns a bookstore in present day Asheville, NC who meets her special someone in England. Every proper fairy tale needs a dragon that must be faced and fought and this story features two in the forms of Sadie’s mother-in-law and Clara’s dreadful uncle. The lives of these remarkable characters are intertwined and as their stories unfolded, my curiosity was piqued by the mystery that ran throughout the book and I was enthralled and, at times, moved to tears by their beautiful love stories.

This story is a keeper—one to read again and again. I loved it! Highly recommend! I was entrusted with a copy of this book by #NetGalley and this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

The second novel in the Doors to the Past series, Pepper Basham does an excellent job of bringing the Biltmore House to life. It’s a dual timeline novel, featuring a Library Fairy and a Book Goblin, which speaks right to a book lover’s heart. As their story unfolds, we see the travesty of social class, the cost of love, and the fulfillment of dreams. Their story influences the future generation, as Clara seeks to understand their relationship, and the mystery surrounding what hasn’t been told. With her own bookstore in jeopardy, she travels to Europe to uncover the truth and fill in the missing pieces, beginning an adventure she didn’t expect to find.

While the story began a little slowly for me, I couldn’t put it down until I reached the end! The intrigue of historical locations, the mystery unfolding through a dual timeline and characters with heart and passion, make this story worth the read!

A big thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC, and the opportunity to post an honest review.

The opening line of this book hooked me: Any story that begins with a library is bound to be an excellent tale. Hope Between the Pages not only begins with a library, but it also includes a book store, a perfect duet of reading enjoyment.

Sadie Blackwell is the keeper of the library at the Vanderbilt House in Asheville, North Carolina. She is dusting when someone (Oliver Camden) comes in and talks about the kinds of books he likes to read. She has hidden herself so that the owner of the voice won't see her. When he leaves, Sadie pulls some books and leaves them on a table in the library with a card with his name on it. He leaves the books on the table the next morning with a note for her, calling her "The Book Fairy," and signed "The Book Goblin," with requests for his next selections. Over the course of the days of his visit, The Book Goblin interacts with the Book Fairy and even though he was from an "upper crust" society family in England and she was a servant, they fall in love. He asks her to come to England to marry him and she agrees to come.

Generations later, Clara Blackwell has inherited the bookstore founded by her great-grandmother, Sadie, but the fly in the ointment is that the deed to the shop was never recorded in the county records. This puts Clara in the midst of a mystery with only a limited amount of time to solve it. In the midst of the searching, she ends up taking a trip to England to find search out the house where Oliver grew up. Clara finds out more of her own history, as well as the history of Oliver and Sadie.

Pepper Basham is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. She understands the mind of a reader so well that she sprinkles her own brand of fairy dust throughout her books. I especially loved this line: Books without readers are like homes without people. Her characters are fully fleshed out and she uses biblical values without beating the reader over the head with them. I especially like how Clara reacted to Maxwell's burn scars. She made the point of seeing Maxwell, the man; and not Maxwell, the scars. Another line I loved says something about living life to the best we can, however long or short it is.

This is a five star book, with two thumbs up, and Belle's library to sate any reader.

Barbour Publishing and NetGalley.com provided the copy I read for this book. All opinions expressed are my own.

I have not read any of peppers books before this but now she is on my must read list! Split time books are either a hit or a miss for me, bit I loved this book! A unique premise, unlike any other books I've read, with enough intrigue and romance to keep me happily turning the pages!

If you had told me I would fall completely in love with story about a Library Fairy and a Book Goblin, I would have laughed and said it was impossible. But guess what....I fell head over heels in love with a story about a Library Fairy and a Book Goblin and it may have just become my favorite book ever!

This was the first book I've ever read by Pepper Basham and she grabbed my attention before I even started page one! Two words sucked me in...Biltmore and Vanderbilt. I have been fascinated with the Biltmore estate and the Vanderbilts ever since I read "Maid to Match" by Deeanne Gist. The story is written in split time, the character from the past written in first person and the character from the present in the third person. Chapter One begins with, "Any story that beings with a library is bound to be an excellent tale", and I would have to wholeheartedly agree. What bookish person would not love characters who cherish books as much as they do? Her masterful writing never failed to pull me along, I was never bored and each page delighted and endeared her characters to me. Like Sade, this book "breathed to me". I could easily picture the scenery and hear the voices of the characters and this beautifully written love story brought me to tears on more than one occasion.

Pepper Basham writes of letting go of fear and having the courage to see the magic in every day life. To not lose sight of the beauty God gives us through His truths, the beauty of overcoming and persevering and trusting in times of trial. Sometimes there is greater beauty in something other than the "fairy tale ending", for it is in those times that a love so deep is revealed that transcends both time and space. "Love makes us brave".

If you enjoy historical or split- time fiction or enjoyed "Wonderland Creek" by Lynn Austin or any of the "Lost Castle" series by Kristy Cambron, then I think you would enjoy this book. I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend!

Hope Between the Pages will be available for purchase from you local or online book retailer, April 1 ,2021. It is part of the Doors to the Past Series, but I did not read the previous book and obviously I loved this one! I will be reading it again and again!

Thank you, Pepper Basham, Barbour Books and Net Galley for the free DRC of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

I LOVED this historical story! Absolutely enjoyed every minute of reading it.

This is a dual timeline book. In 1915 is Sadie - the library maid at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. And in present day is her great-great-granddaughter, Clara - who is managing the family's 100 year old bookstore. Until a missing deed sends her on the discovery of a lifetime!

Sadie's story is amazing. She comes from humble beginnings and is in charge of the library at the Biltmore. There she meets Oliver, and discovers their mutual love of books. She leaves books for him after overhearing his interests and he leaves her notes after reading her suggestions. Oh those notes - so sweet! In spite of their situations and lives, they fall in love. And when he returns to England, he sends letters - such lovely letters. - until Sadie joins him. Such a beautiful love they have!

Clara is completely unaware of this part of Sadie's story - until she's faced with trying to locate the deed to the family's bookstore. Armed with only a location and Oliver's name, she heads off to England in search of the origin of the deed. Once there, she finds out Sadie's story and so much more!

This is one of the best historical fiction books I've read in a long time. I thoroughly enjoyed this story!

I am a huge fan of dual timeline stories and Pepper Basham's first venture into this genre is a resounding success! The very first line of Hope Between the Pages sums it all up nicely, "Any story that begins with a library is bound to be an excellent tale." And so it is!

Hope Between the Pages has everything I love in a good story, fascinating characters, fabulous descriptive settings, and captivating storylines complete with dual mysteries to solve that will leave readers on the edge of their seats! To have all that centered around the amazing library at Biltmore Manson and a bookshop too will make any bibliophile absolutely swoon!

This story is a feast of epic proportions when it comes to memorable quotes. I highlighted so many lines that spoke truth and touched my heart, I just wanted to go back to the beginning and read it all over again. That rarely happens! A few of my favorite lines to whet a readers appetite:

~"I'd never considered how some of our greatest losses lead us to choices that God uses for bigger things than we could ever have imagined."
~God allows us the gift of memories to tide us over to eternity."
~"Isn't it a wonder how God fashioned my desires into a greater story framed by a beautiful binding-like the two covers of a book."

And this beautiful passage for it's lyrical poetic quality:
~"The gentle, relaxed rhythm of this quiet, idyllic life suited Clara. The earth and the sky. Tea, books, and gardens. A vastness of rolling hills and lush countryside. Of birdsong and rain-scented air. How strange to feel a sense of belonging in a place she'd never been before."

It's all too wonderful for words! I thoroughly enjoyed Pepper Basham's exquisite writing and outstanding storytelling! Hope Between the Pages will be on my Favorite Books of the Year List and I highly recommend it! I appreciate Barbour Books making a copy, through NetGalley, available for review. All thoughts and opinions are my very own.

"God allows us the gift of memories to tide us over to eternity."

Oliver and Sadie just became two of my newest literary favorites! Their story is grand and beautifully sad at the same time. My heart wept from the poignancy of a love that lived on beyond the physical.

"Keep to your Bible and to your fairy tales, sweet girl. One is for your soul and the other is for your daydreams. Both will help you through this, and in both you'll find your story."

Max and Clara are brought together as Clara seeks answers about her bookshop, and in the seeking discovers love. Upon first encounter with Max, his damaged soul burrowed deep and I knew I loved him. Together, they bring hope–and healing–between the pages.

"I've given up enough of my life to fear. I don't want to lose anymore."
Almost exactly what her mom had said to her. She and Max were more alike that she'd realized. Perhaps that was why they understood each other so well.
"And...when you're with someone who sees beyond the scars, then the scars don't seem as large anymore."
Neither does the fear.

Basham has dipped her proverbial ink pen into dual-time fiction and I must say, not a drop is wasted. Anyone who has read her individual historical and contemporary works knows that passion flows liberally and not just the romantic kind. There is so much I could say about this book but I’ll just say this —Hope Between the Pages is a truly beautiful dual love story that fans will want to put on their keeper shelf!

I received an electronic copy of the book for review purposes. No review was required. No compensation received.

First time I read this author and I loved her writing style and storytelling.

This is a dual timeline, two stories: Clara in the present, and Sadie in the past. I also loved the settings of Biltmore and its library, the bookshop, and England. Such lovely, lovely settings.

Clara is looking for the deed to the bookshop her family has owned for over one hundred years. If she can't find the paper, she may lose the bookshop. She's also looking to uncover a mystery regarding a name she found in a letter, which sets her on a trip to England.

Sadie, who's Clara's great-great-grandmother, works at Biltmore as the librarian maid. She loves the job and is very good at recommending books to the guests staying at the estate. One of those guests is Oliver and, despite their class differences, they form a friendship and fall in love.

There was nothing I didn't like about this story. I especially loved the gentleness of the main characters and the sweet ending.

I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

I had things to do today but thus far, none of them have been done because I couldn't put this book down no matter how hard I tried! I enjoyed the two aspects of the story - That of the past and the present. The author intertwined them both beautifully.

The book had great characters and I definitely loved the heroes and heroines - the scenery was also beautifully described. I enjoyed the mystery element and the author did a great job of putting it all together while making it all make sense.

I got this in exchange for a honest review but I would definitely buy it after having read it and will be recommending it to others/purchasing it for my library. I read that this is to be part of a new series, in which case sign me up! I loved this book!

Hope Between the Pages by Pepper Basham is an excellent dual timeline historical fiction novel that has it all: history, wonderful characters and message, mystery, suspense, and romance. I loved this book!

It is the second book in a collective series: Doors to the Past, with each book focussing on a real landmark. This book revolves around The Vanderbilts and The Biltmore Estate.

I loved how the author was able to seamlessly weave a tale between 1915 with Ms. Sadie Blackwell, a maid living in the estate and working for Mrs. Vanderbilt (a job mainly involving the in house library and the associated reading materials), and current day Clara whom is a direct descendant of Sadie.

The mysteries and obstacles that are placed within the narrative really add a wonderful complexity to the story. The dual timeline was pulled off with perfection and I loved both periods and the character casts equally. I also loved the addition of the romantic aspect as well. Tastefully done.

I really loved this book and I highly recommend it for anyone that loves an excellent historical fiction novel.

This was such a fantastic book in the Doors to the Past series.

This was a novel written in time slip. In the past, there is the story of a young maid who meets an upper class young man named Oliver. They share a love for books that draws them close together.

In the present day is the great grand-daughter of Sadie, Clara, who is the owner of Blackwell Bookshop.

The things I loved:
-the characters love for books and how they came escape their current circumstances.
-I loved how the characters were woven together so seamlessly.
-the ability of the characters to persevere when their circumstances were extremely difficult.
-my favorite Bible verse was highlighted Isaiah 43:1-3

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the arc. The opinions are my own.

I think I'm going to say what a beautifully written story that will have you all in from the beginning to end and will leave you thinking about these people long after their story has ended.
I love and enjoy Ms. Basham's books very much and this one is no exception. She just has that amazing way of telling a story and bringing it to life for us readers while at the same time offering hope, love and joy all at once. You know, all those good feels of a sweet love story that will make your heart melt.
That's how I felt about this one.
I will be adding this one to my keeper shelf and to my list of favorites for 2021.
Thank you Ms. Basham! Wonderful job well done!

This is a story about saving a family bookstore, but it is so much more, it is about finding your soulmate. Two people who are destined to be together, no mater the distance, no mater your lot in life, the sparks are there.

A beautifully written tale of love and loss, so tender that you will be trying hard not to cry, but we follow theses loves and others throughout the century as they touch so many.

I loved the setting of Sadie Blackwell's portion, Biltmore, can you imagine staying there? Better yet, falling in love with one of the guests, a forbidden love, but beautiful.

The next love, is Clara Blackwell, and her journey to save her great-grandmother's bookshop, with her odyessy taking her back to Biltmore, and England.

We are not only given those love's that only come along once in your life, but we journey to find a deed, and with this mystery comes danger. Who actually owns the bookstore? Come along as we look for answers, and surprises!

I don’t know if I can go justice to this book. It utterly destroyed me in the best of ways. I’ve never been the biggest fan of split time books, but this was SO good. The heartbreak you absolutely knew was coming just wrecked me. I’ll admit: as a Special education teacher during the COVID pandemic, I’m burnt out. So a lot of really sad, deep, or whatever books I just can’t get into. I just need a happily ever after, preferably in a light story. But this was not, and I could not put it down.

Read this book. Seriously. I received a copy of this book from the publisher, but I am going to go get myself a paperback copy because it is beautiful!

This book had so many profound thoughts. I loved the different characters that played such a vital part in each others lives throughout the generations. How the past and the present were linked through experiences and family. The similarities between Sadie and her great granddaughter Clara. Also the men they fall in love with, are two of a kind. There is definitely hope between these pages. This is a wonderful book that I would highly recommend reading.

Who doesn’t love a book about books and a bookshop?!
This story is told in dual time lines, each other just as interesting. You can’t help but fall in love with Sadie &Oliver and their story. There’s a bit of a mystery in the book too.
I really enjoyed this book.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the early copy

I am a little surprised how much I enjoyed this story. My favorite genre has always been historical fiction. This was historical, but also a double romance and a mystery thrown in as well. But I found it a very enjoyable read. I have been several times to the Biltmore House in N.C. Now I want to go and see it at Christmas. It also made me curious to do some research about the Vanderbilt family. I rather enjoyed the split time aspect of the story. It was a bit predictable, but that did not spoil my enjoyment of a story well-told. I enjoyed the peek into England as well.
Thanks to NetGalley for opportunity to read this book. #NetGalley

Hope Between the Pages is a lovely story for a book lover looking for a sweet romance. This is the second installment (standalone) in the Doors to the Past series and I am so excited that this was another enjoyable read. Thank you to the publisher for the eARC.

Clara Blackwell is running a small bookstore in Ashville, NC and living a very narrow lifestyle. Her father has passed away and her mother is ill. She has spent her years with books or taking care of her ailing parents, never really seeking out a life of her own. The discovery of a letter and a fight to maintain a hold on what is rightfully hers leads her to an adventure beyond her wildest dreams. Hope Between the Pages alternates between Clara's story in present day and a past romance that is both powerful and sweet.

Hope Between the Pages by Pepper Basham. Barbour Publishing, Inc., 2021.

This wonderful book tells two stories, one each of Sadie and Clara and their shared love of books and reading. In 1915, Sadie works in the Biltmore Library at the fabulous Vanderbilt estate, she meets Oliver and falls in love. Over a century later in the same North Carolina town, Sadie’s great granddaughter Clara struggles to keep Blackwell’s, the family bookshop. As the story alternates between Sadie and Clara, we see that each has developed a special approach to identifying books that readers will enjoy. Searching through property records takes Clara from the home she shares with her mother, to the Biltmore estate, to Camden House B&B in England’s Lake District, following Sadie’s much earlier path.

Barsham is particularly adept at weaving the two stories together while keeping each easy to follow. Sadie tells her story in the first person, while Clara’s is relayed in the third. Her descriptions of the settings are amazingly visual - we can smell the books in the Biltmore Library as Sadie peeks out through upper stacks to see whether visitors accept her recommendations. And we are with Clara through dusty attics and outbuildings in the Lake District. And spend time with both on village streets.

There is everything to enjoy about this book. Warmly recommended – it is a lovely read.

This dual-line novel is a sweet love story paired with a modern mystery. Clara Blackwell runs the family bookstore in Asheville, NC while her ancestor Sadie works as a maid at the Biltmore Estate in the early 1900s. When Clara suddenly needs to find the deed proving her family owns the building housing the bookstore she uncovers secrets in her family history.
A light and entertaining novel that required some suspension of disbelief. Certain characters "act out of character" in order to provide key clues to unravelling the family history and evidence serendipitously appears. But an engaging book nevertheless.

I've read my fair share of time-split novels but this one was absolutely spellbinding. I fell in love with both protagonists (Sadie and Clara) and I loved following the parallels of their stories. Despite knowing some aspects of the ending of Sadie's story given Clara's historical discovers, I found that I was still surprised and captured in the moment. What I thought would be the end was definitely not the way things went.

I loved Oliver's character and I found Max to be very endearing and original. I had to warm up to Clara's vintage style, but she was too likable to have her obsession be too annoying. I loved that Sadie's perspective was told in first person and Clara's was told in third, as I feel that this distinction allowed me to really get into Sadie's story even if I felt like I knew the end of her story (which I really didn't).

There were some great plot points and pretty good villains, though I would have liked to have seen Uncle Julian more fleshed out. I feel like he didn't really have a purpose of any kind aside from being Clara's hidden adversary in her search for the deed to Blackwell's.

Overall, great story from Pepper Basham. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing an eARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A lovely dual timeline that takes you to Sadie who is in charge of the 1915 Biltmore Estate library as one of her many duties there, and Clara who in the present time, is on a quest to save her bookshop as soon as she finds the deed. Each woman is trying to solve their own mystery. When you add in a 100 year old letter and a trip across the ocean, you will find you can't put this book down. I found this book extremely well written, very descriptive from a historical and tourist view. I was given a complimentary copy of this book by Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

Hope Between the Pages by Pepper Basham is a dual timeline historical fiction novel which is part of the ‘Doors to the Past’ series. The very first line of Hope Between the Pages sums it all up beautifully: "Any story that begins with a library is bound to be an excellent tale." For a book lover like me, Ms. Basham had me at library.

The dual timeline story finds the reader moving between the story of a young bookstore owner in present day and the story of a woman who worked for the Vanderbilt’s at their Biltmore Estate Library in 1915.

Ms. Basham uses the dual timeline extremely effectively to pull together the pieces of the past and the present to create a mysterious and heartwarming family story that needs to be unraveled. I was very pleased with Ms. Bashams use of beloved childhood fairy tales and her reverence for classic books. There are so many parts of this story that are a Bibliophile’s dream!

The romances that spring out of this story are sweet as well as surprising.
Hope Between the Pages has everything a good story needs. It has endearing and memorable characters, beautifully descriptive settings and captivating story lines.

This is my first book by Pepper Basham but I can assure you it won’t be my last.
Well done!

This is a compelling story that begins in 1915 at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. Sadie Blackwell is a Housemaid who loves books. She recently was given the job "Book Maid" that involves taking care of the massive library which she does lovingly. She also enjoys suggesting books to the Biltmore visitors. One such visitor, Oliver Camden, especially enjoys talking to Sadie about books as they discover their mutual love of reading.

Jumping to the present day, Clara Blackwell,, great-granddaughter of Sadie, along with her mother, Eleanor and cousin Robbie run the family bookstore, Blackwell Books and Things, founded by Sadie many decades earlier. A few blocks away a new chain bookstore has opened that threatens their business and wants to buy the building that Blackwell Books is housed in. Clara's uncle, who is her late father's half-brother is using intimidation to suggest the Blackwell family doesn't actually own the building. To prove him wrong Clara is on the hunt for the deed, which appears to be non-existent. All she can find is a very old letter from the former owner indicating that the ownership of the building has been transferred to Sadie and the deed would be forthcoming. This, however, is not enough legal proof of ownership.

As this story goes between the early 1900s to the present time, the beautiful, heartfelt story of Sadie and Clara unfolds. The search for the deed leads Clara on the same path to England as her great-grandmother Sadie. Both Sadie and Clara discover the power of love and how it can restore lives and bring healing. Most importantly they experience how God uses our greatest losses to lead us to places we could never have imagined.

This is a beautifully written, intriguing story with remarkable characters that will touch your heart

Hope between the Pages by Pepper Basham is the story of Sadie Blackwell who is in charge of the library at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC in 1915 and her great-granddaughter, Clara Blackwell, who currently owns a bookshop in Asheville in the present day which was left to her by her father. There is a problem though, as Clara and her mother cannot find the deed to the bookshop and her uncle is trying to take it from her. Was it lost or did the family never have it? Clara is determined to unravel the mystery and her inquiries take her to England where she meets some of her relatives who help her try to solve the mystery. What else will she discover on foreign soil?
This is a great read. It is a mystery but so much more. There is the family relationship between Clara, her mother and Clara’s Uncle Julian as well as his son Robbie. Clara hits many roadblocks as she investigates her family’s history to solve the mystery. It kept me intrigued and glued to the pages from one to the end. The chapters go back and forth between Sadie’s story and Clara’s so we sometimes know more than Sadie does. The characters just reached out and touched my heart. As much as wanted Clara to find a deed I had to ask myself could God have a different plan for her? The ending is great! This book gets a 5 of 5 stars; it deserves it and I highly recommend it.

Hope Between the Pages is an absolute delight for any book lover. This book is a duel time line story that revolves around the love of bookshops and stories. The setting is the Biltmore in North Carolina as well as across the pond in England. The book captures the scenery and allows you to be a part of the history and mystery. There is so much to like about this book. The 1915 story reminds me of Cinderella and the present day story seems to be a nod to Beauty and the Beast. Which is a win win! The characters come alive and you get sucked into the mystery. You will love each and every character. With the exception of the antagonists, but that makes it even more of a page turner. I smiled at the love between the heroes and heroines and the precious romance that each time line shared. This is a heartwarming story that will leave you with a smile as you read the end and savor the happily ever after.

I’m not normally a fan of time-slip novels, but Pepper Basham is definitely one to watch out for in this sub-genre. From the settings to the scenes and emotions of the characters, I felt as though I had been plucked from my life and were in the story itself. Pepper continues to be a go-to author for me. If she writes it, I’ll read it, and I know I’ll love it.

An absolutely phenomenal story from Pepper Basham! Hope Between the Pages was the perfect story for my bookish soul. Poignant and deeply fulfilling, this story will captivate the hearts of anyone fortunate enough to read Basham’s writing.

This is the first book by Basham I have read, and I have been missing out in a major way. Basham has an absolutely incredible gift for storytelling, unique and powerful and utterly enchanting. I could not put this book down! Very few books make me cry, but this book made me sob. I fell in love with the characters, and despite the tragedies thrown their way, Basham wrote their triumphs in a fantastically satisfying and inspirational way. I fell in love with Max within pages of meeting him, and Clara, Sadie, and Oliver will live in my heart for a long time as well.

Hope Between the Pages is an absolute must-read. I do not have enough words to describe the beauty of this book. It is intensely emotional and fulfilling to the soul. This story needs to be moved to the top of your TBR list! 5/5 stars

Hope Between the Pages is pure delight for any book lover's heart. Pepper Basham weaves past and present together in this extremely enjoyable novel about family, faith, hope and love. Basham's first split time story takes the reader from America's beautiful Biltmore estate to Derbyshire, England. The author's love for the Biltmore is apparent in the lush descriptions and rich historical detail.

The discovery of an old letter sends present day Clara on a journey to uncover a century-old family secret that may save her family bookstore. As she learns more of her great-grandmother Sadie's life, she discovers a heritage that brings hope and love.

The magic of Sadie's romance swirled through the pages of the story, becoming embedded in my heart with the knowledge that the sheer joy of reading this story will last forever.
