Such a lovely book! I’ve made some natural perfumes before, but not for awhile now, and because of this book I’ll probably get back to it again. Everything is clearly explained in the book, and the pictures are beautiful. It’s a great hobby to make your own perfumes, and it’s easy to get hold of all the things you need, just remember to check the prices before you decide what to make. Some essential oils are expensive.

I’m a bit scared of these herbal oil infusions, although I don’t think I should be. So, I’ll use a couple of these instructions, and I will try again. I have failed in the past. These seem straightforward and easy enough. After reading this book I believe anyone and everyone is capable of making their own natural perfumes.

I recommend this book to everyone interested in making natural perfumes. Just go for it!

All-Natural Perfume Making: Fragrances to Lift Your Mind, Body, and Spirit by Kristen Schuhmann is a great resource on how to make your own perfume using natural ingredients.

I've been trying to remove as many chemicals from my life as possible, so I was very excited when I saw this book! I can now control what I use in my own perfume!

This book is pretty easy to follow, the beginning of the book details what you will need to get started. There is a chapter all about perfume making, blending, herbs, and my favorite, recipes!

I'm so grateful to Kristen Schuhmann, Quarto Publishing Group – becker & mayer!, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this ARC ebook in exchange for my honest review.

All-Natural Perfume Making by Kristen Schuhmann is a very complete guide, starting with a run down on the difference between oils, water and absolutes, the material needed for perfume making, the existing essential oils and their attributes, the basics of head note. Middle note and base note, how to make an alcohol based perfume, an oil based perfume and a solid perfume, how to make herbal extracts with cuttings from your own garden and flower water and oils and many other useful little things. And of course a good number of precise recipes for either specific goal, or a note. But the book really encourages people to try their own hand at inventing a unique scent, with good guidance of course.
The pictures are truly lovely and there is a very calming feeling to the book overall. The author is very much into aromatherapy and energy, which isn’t my thing, there is a whole chapter on scents linked to chakra points which I admit skipping, but that takes away nothing from the usefulness of the rest of the book. The explanations are very clear and simple, this is very much aimed at beginners and home hobbyists and that is exactly where I stand, so the book was perfect for me. If you know anything about making perfume then it’s probably not the right book for you, but I think many people will be happy to discover how easy and accessible the art of perfume making is.

This book makes it all seem so simple!

I think this is a great book for beginners like me, or anyone giving more than a passing thought to essential oils and perfume making. It finally makes the distinction between essential oils, absolutes, and other names you encounter in this journey and that at first seem so many and complex.

It is very nicely organized, starting with basic ideas and components and then it offers blends ideas and information about their purpose. I liked the facts that it offers ideas for all 3 types of perfume types and other kind of products like extracts and flower waters, and it also features some information about adding flowers or crystals into the mix.

It's a lovely gift for beginners, it feels like a complete guide. Maybe people who know more about these natural essences and perfumes will not find a lot of new information here but for beginners it's a true gem!

This is a good jumping off point for at home hobbyists interested in natural perfumery. Some of the new age chapters may not interest everyone but the basics are still laid out in a sound manner, with easy to follow instructions and ingredients that are accessible to all skill levels. I felt what let this book down was the stock photography- I would have liked to have seen a more personal touch from the author instead of widely used 'wellness category' photos.

Do you long for a more personalized scent, than what stores are offering to you? This book will help you to create your own scent, complete with handy hints and helpful tips to create the quality scent that you desire. There are resources for finding ingredients, as well as tables that describe the notes of perfumes, so you will be able to create a well-balanced scent.

Perfect for those with allergies, you can find scents that don't trouble you and concoct your own recipe to delight the senses. The recipes are created with all-natural ingredients, so you know exactly what is included in your products, instead of chock-full of nasty chemicals that you can't even pronounce the names of.

There are several types of products that you can create, including alcohol-based, oil-based, and solid perfumes. Herbal extracts used for making Bay Rum as a perfume and Vanilla Extract for baking. Hydrosols and Flower Waters for a lighter scent. With glycerin extracts, herbal oils, and Chakara perfumes there is something for everyone to spray, dab, or swipe across your skin.

A very nice book to have upon your shelf, it has the potential to teach you many things.

Many thanks to #BeckerandMayerBooks and #NetGalley for the complimentary copy, I was under no obligation to post a review.

This is a helpful and beautifully illustrated book, though the images are all from Shutterstock and tend towards glossy generic ones instead of step-by-step photos of actual perfume making. It's got good information about the basics of essential oils, hydrosols and so on, and about top notes and things like that. It gives you info on how to make natural perfumes and then provides an assortment of recipes. I would have preferred lots more recipes, but it gives you all you need to start and then some.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.

All-Natural Perfume Making is a tutorial and recipe guide for home perfume making written by Kristen Schuhmann. Due out 23rd March 2021 from Quarto on their becker&mayer! imprint, it's 128 pages and will be available in hardcover format.

This is a beginner friendly tutorial guide for processing and blending perfumes and scented products at home. The introduction includes a short overview of tools and supplies and some info on how to use them. The following chapters cover essential oils, absolutes, tinctures, bases, hydrosols, and other perfume related terms and concepts. The author does a good job of defining terms in layman friendly language and most readers won't have any trouble understanding what she's talking about. There's an emphasis on safety and responsible blending throughout.

Chapter 2 - Blending Basics contains one of the better explanations of perfume "notes" and how to blend them that I've seen. There are lists with top, middle, and base notes and which will coordinate best instead of clashing. The note proportion diagrams which the author has included are especially illustrative and easy to follow.

The recipes include enough variations to keep makers busy for weeks or years. Recipes include ingredients listed bullet style in a list followed by step-by-step instructions. Many of the ingredients will require specialist suppliers. The author has included a resources and links list in the appendices which will help with sourcing ingredients which are difficult to find.

The photography and graphic layout throughout the book are well done (but mostly stock photos). I also liked that the human models were diverse (representation is important) and inclusive. This would make a good selection for home hobbyists, maker's groups, and school/library activity groups (with adult supervision).

Four and a half stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Perfumes are the one area of Eco-conscious living and was thrilled to see this book pop up! Kristen Schuhmann presents a thorough handbook for the novice and advanced econut looking for that next level area to dig into. One aspect of this book that I really appreciated was the lack of dependence on Essential Oils in the recipes. Explaining the options for extracting aromas from plants on one's own was refreshing to see. I look forward to trying out some of the recipe combinations in this book and developing my own signature scent. The only aspect of this book that prevents a 5 star review from me was the inclusion of the Chakra aroma section, I would have liked a more thorough explanation of chakras and their 'yogic philosophy' for the broader audience who may not realize the origins and importance for another culture. Also, providing some form of note in the final section for recipes that appear to tackle significant health concerns to talk to their doctor, etc. I appreciated the additional resources and the glossary and always appreciate book recommendations to explore further. Thank you for a thorough and beautifully designed reference book!

This book has the most gorgeous pictures in it!! The book goes along with all the things you need, what type of perfume you would like, and detailed instructions on how to make things. I loved how it went through all of the popular essential oil scents and what each of them can do help you. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to begin or just learn more about perfume making!!

This book was a lovely read, I get to know a lot of about fragrances, what are they good for with a special combination, how can I make my own perfume at home. It was a really interesting read. I highly recommend for anyone who is looking to try out some perfume making, this book gives you great basics before you dive into the magical way of making your own perfumes at home.

Such a fun book! It was fascinating to read more about perfume making and I love that so many of the recipes contain natural and/or easy to find ingredients. I think I found a new hobby!

This introduction to natural perfumes includes recipes and instructions for making everything from bay rum to lavender oil. Detailed step-by-step recipes and lots of color photography. If you're a believer in essential oils, you will find useful Schuhmann's table of which scents are best for which mood or purpose. (If you're a skeptic, you can still enjoy the recipes and tips.)

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

All Natural Perfume Making is a beautiful book. The photos and graphs are pretty and useful.

I already have a beginner’s knowledge base for using some essential oils for aromatherapy, and I thought maybe that would be the bulk of this book. That’s not what it is at all!

The author went to great pains to make this a fabulous introduction on different ways to make perfume. There are some very basic recipes and overviews, but really the reader is inspired to just try something. Just pick out what kind of perfume you want to try and go for it!

Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book. I was really interested in seeing how one could make some all natural perfumes. I think that during quarantine times, I have just been so interested in finding hobbies that don't necessarily involve technology or sitting around. The idea of making perfume sounds fun!

So, I really liked this book! I want to try it out. I have a lot of the tools already around the house and they could easily be found again by upcycling or recycling instead of throwing out things like glass jars. I think this book was easy to follow, accessible in its aims (like.. it's not that hard to do, but at the same time I would need the book to do it, so it's valuable). It's got great illustrations and instructions that are easy to follow.

All-Natural Perfume Making: Fragrances to Lift your Mind, Body, And Spirit
By Kristin Schumann

Having walked through the souks and wanting to go into the perfume shops filled with hand blown perfume bottles and interesting herbs and spices has made me interested in the process of making perfumes. With many plants and flowers in my garden I hoped that this book would tell me how to make my own scents and that it would be easy to do. There are some in the village that distill rose petals and distill grapes to make high proof alcohol – both of which could be used in making perfumes. That said, I think it might be easier and safer to buy perfume from shops than to make my own for now.

What I liked:
* The illustrated list of tools needed
* Terms used with definitions for them
* Basic plants, flowers, barks, etc that can be used for scent/perfume and the impact they have on the body/emotions
* The warnings, cautions, and safety information
* The information on top, middle and base notes in perfume making
* The information on energy – scent used with crystals n specific chakras
* Recipes for specific blends
* How to make extracts – this is one item that I believe I could actually tackle without worrying that I made endanger myself or someone else ;) I have made vanilla extract in the past and might try a floral one in the future
* Reading about Bay Rum, how and why it was created, and that it is still being made today.

What I didn’t like:
* Worrying that I might use too much of an essential oil or other ingredient and end up doing more harm than good.

- Did I enjoy this book? Yes
- Is it likely that I will try making my own perfume? Maybe…but probably not. I might make extracts, though.

Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto knows – becker & mayer! For the ARC – This is my honest review.

4-5 Stars

Several years ago, I read a book by M. J. Rose titled "The Book of Lost Fragrances". It was a book completely out of character for me, but I was confined in the hospital after having a stroke, and it was given to me by a kind nurse who wanted me to keep my mind active. I found it intriguing, and it ignited an interest in the science and development of perfumes. Always thought it would be fun to travel to Grasse, in France, and see how the process really works. And now the travels are on hold, due to Covid.
Then along comes this book! It has re-ignited my interest in perfume development. The book is full of interesting ideas, easily understood perfume "recipes", and is very well photographed. Until we can travel again, this book has given me the opportunity to explore my newfound interest.
I received a copy of this book as an advance reading copy from NetGalley, in exchange for a fair review. I guess the fact that I liked it so much that I ordered an actual physical copy to keep and refer tells you how much I enjoyed it, better than any words I could write!

A lot of people don't realise that a lot of perfume is made synthetically compared to how they used to be made, using essential oils and all natural ingredients.
Before you even get to the idea of producing your own scents, you read through the history of how and why perfumes were first used.

For protection from spirits to general health and wellness, it's fascinating to learn how nature has inspired the products we use today.

Then we get to the science of actually crafting a combination of scents to get a desired perfume result.
From clear diagrams explaining proportions, and how you can accentuate one type of scent over another, as well as tried and tested examples to try, I really felt more like I was being taught rather than simply 'following instructions'.

I wasn't aware that perfume could have different bases (alcohol or oil based for instance), plus it even covers how to make solid perfume (think like lipbalm but for perfume).
