Description

A guide for anyone who wants to live conscientiously and make a positive impact

Western society makes it challenging for those of us who desire a just world—one of shared prosperity—to live a life that is consistent with our values. Handbook for an Integrated Life provides both philosophical principles and practical steps that you can use to bring your actions in line with your goal of creating a world that works for everyone.

Sharon Schneider, a philanthropy consultant to some of the world’s wealthiest families, distills her expertise into pragmatic guidance for all of us—even those on a budget. She lays out seven foundational principles on which you can base your everyday decisions, helping you:

• Identify the cultural norms that lead you away from your goals
• Differentiate between giving back and simply giving
• Reconsider your buying habits
• Resist the allure of convenience
• Align more of your spending with your values
• Harness the full power of your household
• Raise socially aware kids

Schneider supplements this guidance with useful steps and real-world applications to help you employ the principles in multiple areas of your life, including in food choices, clothing choices, finances, the workplace, relationships, and more. You will come away feeling, at last, equipped and empowered to follow your internal compass.

Advance Praise

“In her Handbook for an Integrated Life, Sharon Schneider takes a simple idea—shared prosperity—and makes it concrete and actionable. Whether you are an entrepreneur, an employee, or a member of the community, the distilled wisdom of her principles is a solid base to build an impactful business, a thriving community, and a healthy environment that works for everyone.” —Brad Feld, Foundry Group partner

“Sharon Schneider’s Handbook is a wonderful guide to aligning your heart and mind, allowing you to simultaneously find greater peace and do more good in the world. The guide will help you adjust your consumption, investments, and philanthropy to activate your values rather than conflict with them. This is a must-read for everyone looking to become the person they aspire to be.” —Devin Thorpe, author of Superpowers for Good

“While we all aspire to lead a life integrated with our values, everyone’s road has its own twists and flat tires along the way. Fortunately, Sharon Schneider has created a map to help us get closer to our destination.” —Seth Goldman, cofounder and CEO of Eat the Change, cofounder of Honest Tea, and chair of the board for Beyond Meat

“Sharon Schneider’s Handbook for an Integrated Life is a must-read for all of us compartmentalizers—quick to separate what we do, how we transact, and what we consume as though none have anything to do with the other, as though each are discrete refrains unto themselves, as opposed to one long song. Reading this book made me look in the mirror and feel at odds with my own self, seeing the gap between my quotidian choices and the moral compass I purport to hold. Even me—someone who ‘does good work’ in her day job but knows deep down she can do more to cocreate a better world. Schneider holds a mirror to that struggle, lets us know we can do better, and gives us practical, if not inspirational, micro-methods to nudge ourselves—and in so doing, the world—to be the more just version we all know we can be. I am excited to imagine what we collectively make possible as a result.” —Maria Kim, president of REDF

“In Handbook for an Integrated Life, Sharon Schneider offers both voice and direction to our collective desire to live with greater, positive impact—to combine purpose with our life practice. It’s a must-read for the impact generation of any age!” —Jed Emerson, author of The Purpose of Capital

Featured Reviews

It may seem impossible to go against the flow of our culture of more, but Schneider offers some helpful, and *gentle* approaches, both general principles and practical suggestions, that can help us do just this. This will be of particular use for American readers, since many of the resources provided are directed toward an American audience.

This book was accessible, inspiring, hopeful, and hit the perfect balance between ideas and application.

(Note: I've posted a review on Goodreads and will post mini-reviews on my blog on July 23 (weekly roundup) and July 31 (month-end 'Head and Heart' roundup)
