I thought this was a great way to present boundaries and consent in different ways. Using the alphabet was interesting, but sometimes I thought the message could be confusing to a child. However, i also think it provides a great opening to further discuss these topics.

Thank you NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for the eARC!

Such a cute book! The title says it all but I love this as a book for young children. It explains in a super easy to understand way and the illustrations are beautiful!

A wonderfully illustrated depiction of “consent”. The narrative is to be interpreted in many ways by the reader, more subliminal than outright it is the perfect seed to sow into young minds.

YES!! Every child needs this book and every parent/guardian needs to read it to them.
Beautiful artwork on top of an extremely important message. This book checks every box.

Consent is something I've been very open about with my children and we have a couple of books on the subject and this is definitely one I'll be adding to our collection.

The rhymes flow nicely and the book covers a lot of areas regarding consent and the paragraphs are clear about the message they're trying to convey. The illustrations are bright and eye catching, really pretty!

Krystaelynne Sanders-Diggs is blowing me away. This is my second book by her and I love how each book has been empowering, informative, colorful and welcoming to all children. Teaching children about consent is extremely important and this book does just that. However, my one issue is to ensure that this book isn’t just talking about “stranger danger”. Most people are abused by people they know and trust. I think adding that would be beneficial.

A clear and simple way to start discussions about consent with young kids. Some of the pages made me wonder how I would expand on the concepts but overall I liked the book. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC of the book.

The ABCs of Consent clearly state everything that a kid has to learn about consent. It's a great read if you want to introduce your child to the alphabet, all while putting in lessons about consent, decisions, and boundaries.

It's a great and colorful read that I'm sure children will enjoy reading. I would definitely buy a copy for my daughter for when she's a little older to understand this. My only problem with this is that some letters' additional content, if you will, don't quite make sense. They just seemed forced so the lines will rhyme, but they don't really contribute to the idea of the book.

I would recommend this to parents! Even if your child is a little older, it's always a good idea to give them more ideas about consent in a child-friendly way.

I think using the alphabet is a good way to introduce consent to a child. Loved the rhyming and colorful illustrations but there were some words my 7 year old daughter didn't know. She also had questions because some things she didn't understand. Overall a good book even if it was not 100% clear for my daughter.

Thank you Netgalley and BooksGoSocial for the opportunity to read this book.

I loved this adorable book! It’s super comprehensive and an amazing conversation starter for families and kids and their adults ages 6ish and under! While some of the images may be a little scary to younger kids, it definitely drives the incredibly important lesson Diggs is trying to convey home! I also loved the illustrations and the diverse representation in kids.

THIS BOOK IS AMAZING! We shouldn't need a book like this, but it is very needed and has been for a long time.
Parents need to talk to their kids about consent, personal bubble and more importantly that if someone does something to them tell you or a trusted adult. It is not their fault and children have to learn this

I love the way picture books can tell complicated and essential truths in a deceptively simple form, with words and images. The ABC’s of Consent does this well — highly recommended home and school reading for children.

This is a great book for younger kiddos about introducing them to the concepts of consent, boundaries, etc. while teaching them about the alphabet. For some reason, I felt that it needed a bit more, but I would still recommend it.

Consent is such an important concept to have in books for small children! Having access to books like this will empower children to voice their concern in situations that feel unsafe, but it will also teach them that consent goes both ways and they must respect the autonomy of others as well.

In addition to being a useful message, this book is adorable, with beautiful illustrations and fun rhyming couplets.

This would be a great addition to a preschool or kinder classroom, as well as for parents of young children.

Thanks for Netgalley for the advanced electronic edition!

Wow! What a beautiful book with essential messages for everyone! The bright colors and pictures give memorable images to attach to the messages being learned. The language is clear and accessible, even for toddlers to digest.

This should be in every public library, classroom, and home of young children!

Thank you to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for the opportunity to read this eARC!

The illustrations are beautiful and colorful and I definitely see them keeping a child's attention. Using the alphabet and rhyming is a clever way to make this serious topic fun. The narrative paves the groundwork for bodily autonomy and gives parents/guardians great framework to have deeper discussions.

Gorgeous illustrations and catchy story! The past about the zipper felt strange to read, though. Not sure if I took that the right way or not. I absolutely love the educational message and plan in reading this to my seven year old.

When I saw the word "consent" I immediately assumed that this book would be aimed at older children. However, it is about consent in all areas of life which I think is a really powerful subject to discuss. This book teaches valuable lessons to all children; however, I immediately thought this would be perfect to use when discussing certain special needs such as Autism/Asperger's syndrome. I have experienced a lot of children who do not understand personal space/property and this book would be a wonderful way to discuss that early on in a very positive and playful manner. It could be used as either a whole class read which might then lead to a discussion around touching other people's things or 1:1 with a child to explain these concepts to them. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and I love how diverse they are.
This is a really lovely concept which I think will be very useful both at home and in the classroom.

There are a few lines where the grammar/rhyming pattern is slightly off which is why I didn't give it 5 stars - for example "hugs and kisses I want" and a few lines with too few syllables which disrupts the flow a little.

This author has a unique style of teaching kids all about themselves. This book is quirky, fun, inspirational, and educative. An enjoyable book your kids would love.

This book has gorgeous eye catching illustraions that represent kids far and wide. The rhyme has good rhythm and pacing, the information is pitched at the right age as well. Page Y definitely balances the serious tone and lightness to the text well. Very informative, done in a clever way for children to access imperative knowledge.

This is a great book to introduce children the concept of consent and boundary. I'd say its never too early to have boundaries! And even the lines rhymes, i love it.

This is a good way to teach consent to young kids that uses pictures and word to help you get your point across.

I absolutely loved this book with the exception of the letter 'Y'. I felt it was quite misleading to use the word never.
However, overall what a great message!! Easy to read and understand for little minds, and explained in 26 different ways. The rhymes were cute and made sense, and the message was loud and clear. Highly recommended!

Where do I begin? This is a very much needed book in this day and age. I think it is important children read and understand a book like this. It takes about a very important thing every child should know. So big kudos to the author for making the book so understandable and talking about such an important topic. It was very enjoyable and easy to understand. Not to mention the pictures were beautiful. Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for an arc of this book.

I enjoyed reading The ABCs of Consent! There are a couple picture books out there with the same theme, but this is the only one I've read. The book starts out with A for Ask, B for Body, and C for consent, so that is a great start to give kids the idea of consent; however, consent is a new word for this audience and is not directly defined, and kiddos may need direct clarification on what the word means. Another example, J for Juvenile, also will take a bit of additional explaining. I would say this is a book for a parent to share with their child to create an important conversation space, and not just for a child on their own. I think it is a book I might keep in my classroom, but I would say it is more of a tool for family safety. I loved the illustrations and the poetry, and it emphasized independence and selfhood, which I loved. I am giving this 5 stars, and it is a tool I would use with my own family.

This little book teaches important concepts about consent, with every letter of the alphabet standing for something important, such as "C is for Consent. I say yes or no." and "D is for Decision. It is mine to make".

It is never too early to start teaching little boys and girls about the power of "No" and what it means to be respected and respectful towards the decisions others make.

This book will teach and inform while opening up opportunities for further discussion.

The illustrations were great.

Thank you net galley and BooksGoSocial publishing for providing me the opportunity to review this book.

First of all this book visually is stunning! The color and illustrations are beautiful. Very eye-catching for children. The content I think is great. I used to work with children for 13 years in ECE and human services. I feel this book is needed. I understand some reviewers had some concerns about some of the letters being a little misleading. But you have to remember it is in the context of explaining about body awareness and consent of individual adults, children and especially with those that are strangers. So I think if you explain to the child and what it really represents I think there shouldn't be an issue. I worked with some traumatized children. This would be a great book at like a Children's Justice Center. I think this is a good book to introduce all children (all centers) so they have an understanding of what they're comfortable with regards to their body and body awareness. One of the things I experience with traumatized kids is they didn't know they had a choice to say no when they are being abused. Some were not even aware of some of those things can even happen. And in the mind of the child they often think they're the only person in the world with that problem. With that said that doesn't mean all children experience those things. However I think all children regardless of their experiences would benefit from this book. But that is just one example. It's especially important because I've seen so often parents trying to make their kids hug other people, students, strangers. That's something parents should never ever do because it teaches the child to go against their instinct when they are not comfortable. We do that so much in society especially with little girls and young women. Having to constantly second guess yourself. So this book I think is an excellent way to introduce those conversations a.d to be aware.

Quick review for a quick read. It's been a while since I've picked up a children's book like this, and it was very cute! I definitely think it's a great thing that this is a reference book based around the issue of consent, particularly for how it's structured to be easy to remember with the rhymes and with beautifully drawn illustrations. There are some concepts I feel here might be a little too advanced depending on how young the child is. On one hand, this can be great for a parent who wants their child to ask more questions about what it is or what they may mean by the words. But on the other hand, it could be source of confusion for a child. "A is for Ask", "B is for body," "N is for No" and their descriptions - spot on, well done, for example. "J is for Juvenile" I had a little bit of hard time thinking that may be easy for a kid to click with with the concept and meaning (though I understood it!). "Z is for Zips" is a little hard to work too from what I saw, because I know a kid would probably ask "What does that mean?" Most of the rhymes work really well otherwise and I think they did a good job of syncing - overall - the illustrations to each of the phrases and concepts.

I'd give this a solid 4 stars and I would certainly recommend it to my family, friends, and people in my community to refer to. Please make more books like this!

Overall score: 4/5 stars.

Note: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, from the publisher.

This book is excellent!!! Such a great message for kids of any age. The wording is clear and easy to understand, and the illustrations are gorgeous and eye catching.
Some of the language and words seem a bit grown up (ex. juvenile) but it’s easy enough for parents to stop and use it as a teaching moment for new words.
I highly recommend this book for any parent of young children!! It’s such a good tool to start an essential conversation that may be hard to have.

I looked at this book with all of my grand children and is served well as a conversation starter. The youngest took the message about strangers but the older ones (both boys and girls) were surprisingly candid about how this affects them. Perhaps it was easier because we are so used to discussing books together and it was easier than approaching consent from a more personal beginning. This is a great way to approach this difficult subject.

We need more books focussing on consent from children. Where respect from adults to children and children to adults is on par, because that is STILL not always the case. I feel that I have earned the right to say this, seeing what some adults try to force my young kids to do. No matter how innocent it seems… ‘You are making me sad for not hugging me’ … ‘Don’t say no! I’m coming to give you a kiss … ‘You NEED to finish your dinner’ ’ There isn’t ill intend, however it’s trying to cross the boundaries comfort the children and it needs to stop. People need to know that a child NOT hugging or wanting to be kissed on the cheek/forehead or not finishing their dinner does not mean they don’t like that person or the food. It simply means they are not bothered about it or hungry right now and that is OKAY. We don’t always feel like hugging or kissing! We are all human beings. No matter how young.

So now my rant is over… back to the book! Each page has a different letter with a term associated with consent. Everything from boundaries to some general safety tips for children such as staying in groups, not trusting strangers or getting in their cars, and letting your parents know where you're going and who you'll be with.

The Illustrations are very pleasing, the colours are beautiful. It’s really a joy to look through them.

It would be a very good book to read once in a while to your children or make it available for them to read themselves whenever they want to. Open that conversation. Show them that it is okay to say no, by leading by example and maybe show this to the adults that try to (maybe innocently) do any of those things to the children, so that they realise it’s not you as a caregiver being ‘funny'‘ about this, but that it is REALLY NOT OKAY.

Absolutely LOVED this book - it’s a must-read for all children (and even for adults & other family members…). Consent is an important subject that EVERYONE needs to be educated in. This book had the perfect way of illustrating consent, boundaries, and respect specially tailored to kids. The art and illustration was beautiful, loved the rhymes; I kept saying YES, YES, YES to each letter!

I adore books for kids that teach concepts like bodily autonomy, independent thought, and the concept of consent. This is filled to the brim with easily digestible concepts for children with gorgeous illustrations to help drive the point home. I liked the incorporation of both children and adult interpersonal relationships. The only real bone I have to pick here is the use of strangers versus family. I think it’s important to also include a little bit of acknowledgement that even family members must respect consent and boundaries; the concept was a little vague on that for the family end of things. Maybe a little note included for parents at the back for how to approach some of those topic ideas in a kid accessible way could give more room for that convo, especially since a lot of older generation family members really harp on requiring kids to interact affectionately as a show of respect. Having that at the end to facilitate dialogue can also give parents and adulte caregivers a reminder of a child’s autonomy and the like as well! Some folks really need that nudge. It also might be good to include having a talking point for when parents override a yes/no of a child for direct safety concerns, because kids are experts at finding the loophole of things haha! Giving parents a little tidbit on how to tackle any contradictions that kids may raise put in at the back to reference a kid friendly way without having to think of it on the fly would be so helpful to reinforce such a good message of the overall text, I would definitely still stock this in classrooms and doctor and therapy offices, and certainly would make a GREAT gift for anyone who has a new kiddo or for a baby shower wishing well gift. Highly recommend this.

“Wear your consent like a golden crown.”

Yes! I love children’s books about activism and consent and expression. I’m in charge of selecting and purchasing books for a progressive children’s experience on Sundays and I’m so stoked to add this to their library! We also love this book as a family.

Thank you so much to Krystaelynne Sanders Diggs, BooksGoSocial, and NetGalley for this ARC!

Consent is something everyone should know and understand. If you have children, this is a great book to open the floor for discussion and educate them. I loved the bold colorful illustrations. The rhythm of the writing style flows nicely and is catchy. The message is extremely important, I do wish the Author incorporated more of a "it's those close to the family and who you think you can trust are ones who can hurt you" in somehow if that makes sense and not just a stranger danger situation. All in all, this is a great book and a must read.

Thank you NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for the eARC.

This books tackles a crucial topic for today’s children. Consent is not a point of discussion reserved only for high school aged children - it can and should start from when a child develops an awareness of their own body and this book seeks to aid that discussion.

I think that the illustrations are wonderful and if read in class these will no doubt be a great point of extending discussion. The bright colours and the diverse children represented ensures that this book, which aims to cover potentially challenging topics, is approachable, welcoming and engaging to all early years and KS1 children.

I found that some of the letters were linked to more abstract concepts such as W being tied to “worth” - a topic that would need further exploration with children. Occasionally, a couple of the letters may also need further clarification or simplification such as K being for kindness - which the book highlights is sometimes its “too good to be true”.

I appreciate the way in which this book tackles a challenging topic and look forward to sharing it with my class when we cover consent in school.

The ABC's of Consent is such an important book because it really explains what consent means. The book uses each letter of the alphabet to explain parts of consent. For example is letter C is for Consent and R is for Respect. Each page uses a four line rhyme to explain what each word means. The illustrations are very colorful and bright. They go along with the descriptions on the page, and they make it easy to follow along with the content. I read the book with my 10 year old daughter, and we were able to have a discussion after each page. She said that the book helped her to understand how important it is to set boundaries. We used examples of boundaries at school and at home. The one example that stuck out to her the most was H is for Hugs. She said that it helps to know that it's her decision to hug someone. I would recommend this book to anyone with children of all ages.

A great introduction to young children to open the conversation of consent.

This book provides a sweet rhythmic tone to each sentence along with colourful graphics of young people. I am glad to see of the diversity of skin tones displayed within the book and wish we could've had some disability representation also, to help centre everyone in conversations of consent and inclusion.

I appreciated the different themes within the book and the ways the discussions are opened, however T is for Touch was a little more confusing than I felt it needed to be.

Overall, a welcome introduction to the topic for young people.

Here comes another wonderful Krystaelynne Sanders Diggs book for young readers on important topics! As with her other fabulous children's books, this one is empowering, informative and holds the belief that children can understand important topics, in this case consent, if presented in an age appropriate way. With colourful illustrations and large text, this is a great book for young readers to share with their parents or for health teachers to introduce a lesson on abuse prevention. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me and giving me the opportunity to review it.

The ABCs of Consent by Krystaelynne Sanders Diggs is an awesome resource on teaching children about appropriate touching and consent. Ms. Diggs uses the ABCs to teach children in easy-to-understand words and definitions about what is and is not appropriate touch. I think The ABCs of Consent is a great resource for anyone working with children need to have in their library. Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this book. My review is also on Goodreads.

I love the illustrations. Each letter has a full color page dedicated to it with a diverse representation of children enacting the words. The words are said as they apply to the person, almost like affirmations. “I am in charge of my body.” Children can internalize those words to be theirs in their minds. They can hear someone else say it as well as hear themselves say it to be true.

This is a beautifully illustrated book. It introduces the topic of consent in a really accessible manner for younger kids, with lots of opportunities for open discussions.

A must for all schools and parents to help teach children what is appropriate and not.

This is a really great picture book! It deals with very important topics that all young children should hear about. Each page has a letter of the alphabet and something to do with consent that corresponds with that letter. I highly recommend this book, for any age really.

This is an excellent book. I think it would be great to introduce ideas to very young children, without getting in too deep about how nasty the world can be. I think think book could be a great tool to start teaching the younger generation about consent. The pictures and writing style are cute and fun.

This is a very useful and important children's book, which shows an A to Z of how children can give consent to what they want or don't want, for example with people hugging them, touching them, being close to them etc.

The graphics are bright and colourful, and the text is easy to read. The book is 30 pages long, and the reading age is around 3-7 years, although children outwith this age would find it useful too. Highly recommended!

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
