Description

Luka Bakker meets the charismatic Espen De Cleene in an awkward moment at a market in Amsterdam, but then he vanishes from her life as quickly as he’d appeared. A few months later, another chance encounter brings them back together.

With Espen, two other men enter into her life who become her best friends: Espen’s brother, Bas, and his friend, Stijn.

Luka, a cartographer, designs the order of her life like the charts she creates—carefully mapped outcomes. She is consumed by Espen’s energy and unshakable sense of purpose, which she feels she lacks.

Luka has a strong bond with her maternal grandmother who, along with her mother, are the two women she admires and respects the most. Yet she doesn’t recognize their strength in herself.

But her sense of duty toward her parents creates conflict between her and the outspoken, independent Espen.

She often reverts back to the stories and sun myths her father told her as a child, and they become her way of making sense of circumstances she is unable to control.

Luka needs to find faith in her inner compass when her smooth sailing ship is unexpectedly caught in a storm, and it feels impossible to steer her way out of it.

The Suncatchers is a novel about how our relationships shape our views of the world around us and the line between independence and loyalty.

It is also about accepting life and love’s sometimes inevitable outcomes, and the value of our human inter-connectedness.

A love story to pine for

There are few things more romantic than meeting the love of your life by chance.

Luka was just trying to buy ingredients for a dinner she wanted to prepare for her father when Espen approaches her. This random romantic interaction is the starting point of a fabulous book called The Suncatchers by Leonora Ross...

Fair warning: it’s almost impossible not to fall in love with The Suncatchers main character Luka. She is, in many ways, the ultimate female lead. She’s mysterious, extremely educated, effortlessly beautiful, kind, a devoted girlfriend, daughter, and friend...

But what makes her such a well-rounded character is her ability to stand up for herself in nearly every situation...She demands respect, maintains her devotion to her parents and her career, and refuses to settle no matter the cost...It’s a joy to read such an excellent female lead...

...I loved reading The Suncatchers and would recommend it to those who love smart female leads and a good love story. --Independent Book Review

Simply stunning.. The Suncatchers is a beautiful story about love, loyalty and purpose. Against the gorgeous settings of Amsterdam and Vancouver as well as some gorfous ocean backdrops, we are introduced to Luka, an intelligent protagonist with an adoration of cartography and myths involving the sun. She is fiercely loyal towards her family and her adoration and huge heart attracts the boundless energy and lobe of the effervescent Marine Biologist Espen, who fights tirelessly to save the oceans and those he loves. Luka is welcomed into his close circle of brother Bas and best friend Stijn. One of my favourite characters though is Luka's grandmother, who is majestically independent into her late 90s and 100s and holds a wealth of wisdom and love. The novel steers us on the course of the protagonists lives, mapping out the greater purpose and loves and meandering through some deep set questions. Ultimately it is love that steers the way and binds us all and at the root is the sunshine that provides life. There are some amazing references to different cultural folklore regarding the sun. I was hooked after a few pages of this book and desperately wanted to keep binge reading to see how everything panned out. I became emotionally invested in the lives of the protagonists. A beautiful read. #TheSuncatchers #LeonoraRoss #Netgalley

Luka is a cartographer who loves her family and myths about the sun. When she meets marine biologist, Espen, they develop a deep and loving relationship. Along with Espen's brother, Bas and best friend, Stijn, they form a very close circle of friends. Espen is deeply committed to saving the oceans from pollution and damage and forcibly makes his views know at every possible opportunity. When Luka takes a job with a company building high end, luxury yachts her relationship with Espen is tested.

This novel has so many strands, love, family loyalty, friendship, climate change and human interference. It also has an element of mythology in the stories Luka tells Espen about the creation of the sun. These strands are beautifully woven together to create a really rewarding read. I liked all the characters each of whom has a unique personality. Luke's grandmother is particularly special; a strong and independent elder lady. The observations the characters make about life, love, family, environmental damage and possible recovery are astutely described. I was really drawn into the lives of the characters and became very fond of them. The settings of Amsterdam, Vancouver and the oceans are perfect backdrops to the story.

If you enjoy a love story which has many more elements to it The Suncatchers is definitely for you. It is entertaining, charming, clever, profound and well written. Highly recommended.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
