Description

He's a refreshingly different hero, definitely not young and six-packed, but...

Retired reporter Jake Scott knows a thing or two about exposing the truth and unmasking frauds. Unfortunately, he walks a fine line between helping and interfering in investigations. Homicide Detective Dani Perez, with whom Jake has a shaky personal relationship, doesn’t always appreciate it, but he can’t seem to help himself.

The affable and shrewd, yet old fashioned, Jake is hot on the trail of a case when a body discovered in a bog and three suspects lead him to the doorstep of The Guardians of Truth, a shady organization with an opportunistic and charismatic leader. While the organization purports to offer everlasting support to its followers, Jake discovers just the opposite is true.

Now Jake and an insider, Cassie Wright, want to expose the leader and protect his followers from financial ruin or worse. Their harrowing quest isn’t without peril, as one will disappear and the other will be forced to fight for survival.

If you like your heroes to be, well, like you and I, the second book in the Jake Scott Mystery Series will draw you in and have you wishing you could dive in to help.

Retired reporter, Jake Scott, starts investigating a case after his "friend's" daughter's Mom (did you follow that?) is reported missing by the girls. The girls tell take it's not like Cassie Wright to leave without a note. Jake is interested and alerts his friend (and oh, does he want to be more) with Dani, who is the lead detective in Homicide. The case is referred over to Missing Persons, and Dani has her own case to solve which may or may not be connected. However, the reporter's instincts run strong, and Jake takes it upon himself to learn as much as he can about Cassie and the individuals in her life. This is a really fun read - with interesting twists along the way. Jake Scott is a wonderful character who I can't wait to read more about. Thank you to BooksGoSocial for an advance of this book - the opinions expressed are my own.

The second in the Jake Scott series sees the retired Ottowa journalist looking into a missing person case and finding himself embroiled in something much bigger.

Jake, a widower, is in the early stages of a relationship with homicide detective Dani Perez. When her daughter's friend approaches police after her mother goes missing, Jake resolves to help in the search. His investigative skills are still acute and he is looking for something to do to stave off boredom.

The dynamic between Jake and Dani forms the backdrop to the story. Their attraction is growing but neither is sure of the other's feelings, or how to progress. This dilemma is well handled and we hear both sides of the situation, giving a really strong knowledge of the characters. Dani isn't thrilled about Jake's forays into investigation, but realises he will go ahead anyway. But does he realise the danger he could be in?

The novel is slow paced as the tension builds. Jake discovers several important clues and gradually comes closer to the truth, resulting in a dramatic ending . Overall, The Guardians of Truth is a good addition to a series that is intriguing and refreshingly different.

This is the second book in the Jake Scott series but works well as a standalone.
Jake is a retired reporter who still uses his skills to help people and when Cassie Wright goes missing he wants to help.
It was a slow start but picked up speed and had a great ending. Good characters and storyline I would read this author again.

Jake is a great protagonist - he seems very real to me and certainly not perfect. I can see him being considered as much of a hindrance as a help sometimes as he finds his way into investigations despite being a retired journalist. The author does a wonderful job of immersing the reader in the day to day loves of the characters and this can make the darker aspects of the case all the more confronting.
