I loved this little novella. A small town, second chance romance, that takes place in the best setting, a farm in Southern Vermont. This is a quick, fun read and very much gives me Hallmark movie vibes.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for a copy of the this e-arc in exchange for a honest review.
Whatever Happened to My Ex is a short novella featuring city girl Carly. After getting fired from her movie set job, she heads back to the house she inherited from her grandma in New Haven, Vermont. While she originally planned on trying to sell the house, she slowly learns how to once again fall in love with the small town and as well as the guy (Boone) she once has a short lived romance with back in high school.
This book was a quick read and a good clean romance. No foul language or spicy scenes.

This light, sweet novella about a second chance small town romance gave me all the Hallmark movie vibes! Although the book was fast paced to pack in all the feel good •blossoming• banter between Carly and Boone, I never felt like I was rushed through chapters. If you’re looking for a sweet love story with plenty of feel good laughs and everything in-between this one’s for you. I definitely look forward to future reads by Poppy Carter!

A SWEET AND FUNNY SECOND CHANCE LOVE STORY.
A cute little small town story.
If you’re looking for a quick read that is as sweet as sugar cane then this is the book for you. Carly is super relatable and a fun people pleasing character. She speaks her mind and is true to her self.
My only criticism I have for this book is the name for the Love interest. Boone’s name just didn’t do it for me and made it a little difficult to imagine his character as the leading man.
I was given this ARC by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This is my first short story read so my rating may be higher as I haven’t got any other novellas to compare it to. But it’s an easy fun read!

Fast-paced, quick read. Very sweet and wholesome with relatable characters. Full review on my Instagram, booknerdysam.
When Carly suddenly loses her job in the film industry, she decides it's time to tackle the farm she inherited from her Grandmother. Unfortunately, the formerly lively small-town farm has lost nearly all of its appeal in the three years since her Grandmother's passing. Fortunately, her Grandmother's farm hand is more than willing to pitch in and lend a hand save the farm.....but Boone isn't just a farm hand, he's also Carly's favorite former flame.
While I suppose this is a 'second chance romance' technically, it's definitely more for the Hallmark movie crowd as opposed to fans of Renee Carlino or Taylor Jenkins read. This book is 98% fluff, but 100% adorable. A fun, quick read for sunny romance fans.
Absolutely brilliant novella. I really loved Carly the main character and her interactions with Boone. There are a few laugh out loud moments too.
The story was very light hearted and easy to read. I normally struggle to connect with characters in shorter stories as there isn't normally as much depth to them in the limited pages but you got a real sense of the two main characters in this.
I really enjoyed the setting on the farm, the author depicted it beautifully.
I will definitely be reading more from this collection.
Oh, what a fun read! This was full of surprises and I loved reading about the characters. The author has done a great job creating a story centered around romance and slight comedy. The writing is well done and pulled me in from the very first chapter.

I really liked this book. It was sweet, refreshing and cute. Carly was trying to find her place in the world and that's not easy. Boone was very sure of himself and knew what he wanted. They were good together, I liked them. I just feel like the ending was a little rushed, that everything happened at once and at the same time. It was a small book but the passage of time was done very nicely
4 stars!
This one was really sweet! I love second-chance romances and small-town settings, and this one really delivered on both tropes. Being a novella, the story was very fast-paced and we’re introduced to the main leads and their history quickly.
Carly and Boone dated one summer in high school before going separate ways, but as fate would have it, they are thrown back together when Carly is fired from her NYC job and returns to the farmhouse her grandma left her in hopes of fixing up the place and selling it. Boone had been her grandma’s farmhand before she passed and is unhappy about Carly’s desire to sell the place. Obviously old flames rekindle (they hardly went out to begin with), and what we get is a sweet, short but satisfying love story.
The only thing stopping me from giving it 5 stars is that the ending felt very abrupt. I would’ve loved a small epilogue, even a one-page epilogue to make the conclusion feel less jarring.
This was a short and predictable (but adorable!) small town romance story of around 100 pages.
The protagonist is about 28, but it reads like a New-Adult book in terms of tone and language. It was full of witty humour and loveable characters.
BUT some of the main characters got a bit preachy and repetitive towards the end, and had opinions and moods that flipped quicker than a pancake! Although this is likely to keep it concise for the size of the book.
It was definitely cute, with themes of childhood sweetheart, second chance romance and small town romance all in its pages.
A lovely rom com novella you could read in one sitting, and I'd definitely read some of her other books!
This was a delightful short read that gave all the sweet, small town romance vibes with added farm life, baby animals, and a cute second-chance romance. The MC was a grumpy exterior, with a cinnamon roll for an interior; he cares for the simple life, family, nostalgia, and animals. While the FMC has been running through life just trying to keep everyone pleased and forgetting who she is and where her heart is. I liked that she got to reconnect with her childhood memories, and that there was someone there to guide and stubbornly love her through rediscovering what matters. Parts of the story were unnecessary because it was a short story; the side characters and their stories add value in a longer length novel but given how short this book was, their side stories made the rest of the book feel even more rushed. (I.e what's her mom running from? What about the fireworks between Donny and Sam (I think that's their names - I'm horrible with names admittedly!) And like, granny and Mr. B seemed to have some stories of their own not to mention that there was room for a spin off about her previous boss or even the dreaded director and why he is such a painful human.)

I don‘t often like novellas, they can feel super rushed and skip a lot to fir more in but this one was the complete opposite!
I loved reading about Carly and Boone. They were such fun characters and had the best banter.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review!
Poppy wrote just the feel good rom-com I didnt know I needed. It was a fun and quick read. I really loved the characters and the theme. I definitely identify as a helper so it was refreshing to see the positive and negative.of this role.
Thank you NetGalley, Poppy Carter and In Heels Backwards Press for the copy of Whatever Happened to My Ex. This is my personal review.
This was a wonderful small town second chance novella set in the beautiful state of Vermont.
Carly needs help getting the farmhouse she inherited from her grandmother ready to sell. When she gets to Vermont she finds a long-ago flame – Boone had been helping her grandmother on the farm.
The interaction between Carly and Boone is so sweet and perfect.
A sweet romance about a second chance with an ex. I enjoyed this, it would make an ideal beach read.

No preconceived notions here!
Carly is the most people pleaser of people pleasers and feels the need to help everyone. She works within film in New York and has big dreams passed down to her from her mother.
She was given land and a home to take care of after her grandmother passed away in North Haven, but hasn’t been back in three years. She decides to go back after being fired from her job to fix up and sell the place.
Carly faces her previous, teenage, summer fling, who’s been caretaker of the land while she’s been gone, and enlists him for help in fixing up the house.
They go through the journey of figuring out what to do with the house and the land while figuring out the adult versions of each other as well.
I am so excited to read the next books in this series!! This was my first ever ARC read so I highly appreciate Poppy Carter and Net Galley for allowing me to read this great short story and share my thoughts!
My only downside or negative thought about it is that it was too short 😩 I just wanted more!
This is perfect for someone looking for a quick, easy, lighthearted, small town, second chance romance with cute, funny banter!
This romcom was so fricking cute!
Second chance and small town romance? Sign me up! This was a really fun read. After Carly was fired, she visited a farm that she inherited and runs into her ex, Boone. They concoct a plan to have her ex-boss (a famous film director) to rent the barn. This was a quick, funny, romantic novella. It left me satisfied, unlike other novellas. I really liked both of the main characters, and their chemistry was great. I am definitely eager to read anything written by Poppy Carter!
Is a contemporary romance that follows Carlie and Boone as they reconnect as adults following a short lived teenage romance.
Carlie is in the film industry and after being abruptly fired from her current gig, she decided to head to Vermont to visit her fruit farm that she inherited when her grandmother passed. She’s been neglecting the property since her grandmothers death three years ago and she realizes she can’t put it off anymore. Upon arrival, she learns she’s just weeks from losing the place due to unpaid property taxes and with the help of her old fling, Carlie begins to try and find ways to stop the place be auctioned.
This was a short and sweet read, taking less than two hours to read from start and finish. I enjoyed the plot thoroughly and found both Carly and North Haven endearing. This was a textbook HEA romance with the cute small town, broody mmc, and cute fuzzy animals. Carter has a knack for conversation and Carlie’s conversations with locals and friends was fresh and quipy. The relationship between our hero and heroine felt a bit lackluster, though. There didn’t seem to be much chemistry and much of the conversation was stilted. I think this is because they didn’t get time to really explore their feelings and Carter didn’t explain much about their history. There was definitely an opportunity to dig deeper here. Also, some of the prose felt choppy and off. There were areas where it felt like the author was just throwing in the narrators thought with without working them in and explaining them. It was somewhat distracting and choppy. The ending was a bit rush and the conflict was almost immediately resolved without any really action from any characters. I just kept finding myself wanting to know more while also losing interest because I already didn’t know enough.
Carter definitely has a knack for storytelling and this was worth the read. I will continue with this series and I’m looking forward to watching her writing grow. I was given this ARC by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

After being fired, Carly decides to return to her grandmother's hometown, since she inherited her home. There she finds her high school sweetheart, Boone, who took care of Carly's grandmother at home while she was away.
Together they start renovating the house, but sooner than later past feelings resurface.
--
Carly is such a precious human being because she just wants to help everyone who seems to need a hand!
Boone is a little bit more grumpy but has a sweet spot for those in need of rescue animals.
This was a cute and heartwarming read but I felt like it was more about Carly and her dealing with the past and future decisions she has to make than about Carly and Boone's love relationship.

Tropes:
- small town
