Description

"My mentor and former boss Alf Wight said that the life of a vet is never dull and how true he was. It is funny looking back that he found fame through his James Herriot books, and now his former surgery and myself have been taken to the nation’s heart once again through our show The Yorkshire Vet".

"It just shows what a nation of animal lovers we are and these past few years have been particularly challenging for all of us with the Coronavirus outbreak. But what it has shown me is the comfort and support our pets give us in times like these. All the same, it was this, along with recent changes to my working life that gave me an opportunity to reflect, so I want to look back at some of my favourite cases and share them with you."

A love of animals, the gift of story-telling and a sense of humor have made Peter Wright a TV star with his show The Yorkshire Vet. Those skills also helped him deliver a laugh-out-loud memoir of the animals he’s met in his years of practice in rural Yorkshire. I had no idea that ferrets were used to catch rabbits, that using chloroform to anesthetize large animals was a hit or miss proposition or that people bring snakes to their local vet for treatment. I also learned a lot about donkeys and about how sheep have a secret desire to die. Wright also discusses the business of veterinary medicine, the affect the long hours have on family, new techniques and designer dogs. The Tales and Tails of a Yorkshire Vet is a must read for animal lovers everywhere. 5 stars.

Thank you to NetGalley, Ad Lib Publishers and Peter Wright for this ARC.

The perfect companion for fans of Yorkshire Vet! This book is written in such a way that you feel as though you’re sat at Peter’s feet whilst he tells you the story of his career. The writing style is very gentle and there’s nothing for any age group to take offence to. There’s some humorous anecdotes and where there’s some sad parts, they’re written with great respect for the animal whilst still being pragmatic. I’ve already recommended this to several family members

Such a great insight into the life of a vet. I love these kinds of TV programmes so I'm always keen to read the books based on the shows. I loved the little background info of some of the characters from All Creature's Great and Small.

As an animal lover, it was a mixed bag of emotions with births, deaths, and everything in between. I really enjoyed all the characters that Peter came across both humans and animals!

What a great collection of stories. I loved it

In another of his delightful books, Wright shares stories of a vet's life in North Yorkshire. What I liked best about this book was the chapters sharing his own lie, especially the chapter "My Life in Pets," which had delightful tales of the cats and dogs he's owned as an adult.
