Geography Alphabet

My son and I loved this book! We love to travel, and we love geography. Many of the key words are highlighted and many of the pictures have word labels so this is a great one for early readers, too.

A cute alphabet book for kids that ties each letter to a different geographical feature around the world! I thought this was cute and liked the illustrations!

Great book to teach early geography! There are plenty of geographical terms introduced and defined to give kids of all levels good understanding of what they are talking about. There are also examples of animals that inhabit those locations or things that happen there, which give further context to the geographical terms. Perfect for older toddlers to young children.

Since I've been lulled into expecting lyrical picture books with a story, I was a bit disappointed with this book initially but that quickly changed. Like many children's books, it's deceptively simple yet packs quite a bit of info into its pages. This one offers up both words and illustrations by RM Smith. They're realistic without being detailed, if that makes sense, capturing the general looks of earth's many features without striving to make them look like photographs. My favorite, I think, was "island". The colors are appropriate for the feature/place focused on, with a wider variety. All have additional things/items with labels. Those were a nice touch and ranged from things like boats and waves, to cars and trucks, to a mama bear and cubs, plus more. Smith nicely captured the colder climates, too, with blues and white/blue ice features.

I have to admit, I was curious to see what the author would use for some of the less obvious letters such as U, X, and Z. In my mind, being in Alaska, I was distracted briefly at each page as I tried to imagine how I'd illustrate a book on Alaska's features. Given some of the interesting Native Alaskan names common here, that wasn't that much of a reach, I must admit. In any case, after giving Smith a silent round of applause for using K for Key, as in map key/legend, I liked the choices. Again, all were strengthened by the use of other words/things added to the illustration, then further used in the written description of what you're seeing.

All in all, a fun book. Not necessarily a bed time story but one that can be used to supplement learning and discussion. And, hey, since Alaska has active volcanic activity, loved the moose running away from the lava in the V illustration. Thanks #NetGalley and #BooksGoSocial for sharing this one with me early. It was fun and stimulated my own imagination.

A very good alphabet book, this one focusing on geography, as the title clearly states. The writing and the illustrations are crisp and it is a good primer. A good addition to learn the alphabet books, I enjoyed it.

I think this is a wonderful picture book to help either introduce or review geography vocabulary with children in preschool and elementary school. Geography can be confusing for younger kids and this book is helpful and the illustrations with labels that accompany each word are very helpful. I even learned a new word..yardang! I can't wait to use this in the classroom and with my toddler son at home.

Geography Alphabet is a wonderful introduction into the world around us. My children enjoyed learning about different geographical terms as well as some of the animals that inhabit these areas. I would highly recommend this book to people with young children!

It was a great introduction to kids on different geographical homes and the animals that live there. I recommend this book to parents with both young and older children. I loved the illustrations in Geography Alphabet so much -- there are so many details to pore over! I enjoyed each of the words chosen, and I feel like this book could work well in a primary grade classroom to cover basic (and not-so-basic) geography concepts.

Side note: I thought the use of "slow" instead of "slowly" on the glacier page was an error, but apparently that's an example of a FLAT adverb. So I learned about geography AND grammar from this book! ;)

I read this with my first grader and thought it was a good introduction to geography terms. I liked the illustrations.

Geography Alphabet was a wonderful, beautiful and educational book that would be great for any curious children who always want to learn more.

This book was a perfect fit for our Social Studies/Geography curriculum in our homeschool. The pictures were concise and illustrated the terms very well. We also learned new vocabulary and discussed where in the world we might see it. The words under the picture, allowed us some sight word reading. I just LOVE books featuring ABCs and then especially the original/creative ones. Like with animals. Or with fantasy creatures. So when I saw this one up on Netgalley well I had to read it. Combining two things I love (ABC and Geography)? Sign me up!

My initial thoughts were that this one would be a simple ABC book featuring geography with multiple letters per page and maybe some explanations, but it is much more than that. Each letter has its own page, and not just that there is a delightful big illustration for each letter featuring that place/area with a fun scene or something that encapsulates what it is along with words showing what the sights we see are. I think I would have liked it see more balanced because now some places have 1 or 2 and others have 4+. Like Glacier just mentions the Arctic Stern, but Jungle has Sloth, Monkey, Toucan, Tree Frog, Jaguar. Still, I am happy that the author decided to add words to the sights!

Plus, something I didn't expect but was delighted to get was that each letter has a description of that geographic location/terms with key words highlighted. For instance for Antarctica words highlighted are coldest, windiest, driest, snow, ice, South Pole. Thus kids now instantly know what kind of words to use to describe that place with and instantly get an easy short way to remember this location/term. Handy, fun, and smart! 

I definitely was looking forward to what terms/locations we would get for each letter and I especially was curious for the harder letters, Q, X, Y, Z. While Q and X and Z had no surprises just fun and creativity, Y was a surprise, as I didn't know what Yandang was! So thank you author for learning this adult a new term! 

The letters are mentioned in both capital and lowercase so kids can easy see how each is written. 

The illustrations were really fun and I love the style. 

All in all, this is one heck of a fun book and I would 100% recommend this one! It will be fun for kids to learn not just the alphabet but also geography and animals/nature. I think they will really enjoy it!

This is a well-thought-out book that covers various geologic features. It would be a good resource in an elementary classroom or library as well as a public library non-fiction section. The illustrations are clear and child-centric and the descriptions are geared toward mid-level readers.

This book is a step up from A is for apple, B is for bat, and so on. It is an educational treasure that teaches kids not just about their letters but also about places, things, people, places, and lots of interesting geographical facts and new words.

“Geography Alphabet” introduces young children to physical geography in an entertaining and visually pleasing way. Each letter of the alphabet features a different part of our natural or human made landscape.

The text is simple to understand with key words in a different color than the rest of the text. R.M. Smith’s illustrations are somewhat whimsical and invite the reader to explore. Objects in the illustrations are often labeled.

This is an excellent example of an alphabet book for young children. It would also be a great example to have in a classroom of older children (even high school) if students are creating alphabet books for a younger audience.

This is a lovely book which does exactly what it says in the title. It covers a range of different features and would be a lovely addition to a classroom bookshelf or library to keep children thinking about the vocabulary.

Oh my goodness. This book was so cute. I loved the colors and illustration. I can’t wait till I can buy a copy so I can give it to my friend to read to her students.

Not only is it a simple alphabet book. It’s informative and is good for not just younger grades like preschool to kinder but it would even be good in a first and second grade class.

This will be a perfect addition to my social studies classroom. I find kids are really lacking in geography vocabulary. This book has fun illustrations, is colorful, isn’t too complex in reading level, and is visually appealing. There are a few out of the ordinary terms that will intrigue them as well.

This was a cute surprise. I thought it was going to have actual cities from the world, but it had actual places. The writing was in words easily understandable by children and the facts it provided were clear and informational. They were all places that a child could understand with the most important facts.

A surprisingly good A-Z of geography and nature. We get just the one page per letter, but for all the doubt that you won't get 26 legitimate pages for all 26 letters you'll be impressed. Yes, it's Y that has the higher-grade-of-Scrabble-friendly word, but all the other posers the alphabet provides are accomplished with levity and glee. The visuals are very nicely crafted, and whether we're looking at a Highway or an Island we get critters or something peppering the design, with their own labels. All in all this is a lot more advanced than some A-Z books – it won't take a genius to read but it is at a step above many that I get to see, and therefore might even count as a tougher than average entry to the 'my first geography book' shelf. If you want to instil an interest in the world outside this is a wonderful option to consider. If you don't, tie a knot in it. Four and a half stars.

Alphabet Geography was such a fun and educational read. The colorful illustrations made learning fun and entertaining. What better way to learn the different cases of the alphabet, geographic terms, as well as locations?

Alphabet Geography is a must have addition to any child's library. Five stars.

I would like to begin this review by writing that at 39 years old, I had no I idea what a yardang is.

Geography Alphabet is an awesome book that not only exposes your child to geography, but it also has related words written in their own color and a bit bigger. (it's 1am. I know there is a better word, but it escapes me.)

Wonderful book kids will enjoy reading and look through.

I think this is a wonderful book that goes through the alphabet and has a specific vocabulary related to geography word for each letter. The illustrations are so bright and engaging. I think kids would really enjoy this book and could understand it.
