Description

Told with a touching sensitivity, these wide-ranging stories and essays cast a spell that often envelops the reader in another time and place. Along the way, striking events and memories illustrate the value of courage and perseverance, as well as the unrelenting elusiveness of time.

Kay Cora Jewett takes you on a journey that chronicles her early bout with polio, her tumultuous and sometimes dangerously naive school years, and her unusually diverse careers. Accompany her on a walk through the mean streets of 1960s Chicago as she visits her welfare clients, or witness an encounter with a Vogue photographer as she flirts with the possibility of fame. Laugh at her problem-plagued but inspiring time as a magazine publisher. Follow her through the challenges of a remarkable life, including the deaths of a child, a sister, and some cherished and memorable friends. Get lost in the enchanting tales of her many beloved and exceptional animals.
"Over the Fence, Into the Heart" is a mix of humor, hope, derring-do, and sometimes tragedy. The author's observations are based on a unique and perceptive view of life. Readers will find themselves alternately laughing, crying, and shaking their heads, but always reading on with anticipation.

It is co-authored with the author’s cat Mick, aka Catatonic, so named because he sleeps a lot and because he slurps tonic (with a little gin mixed in, of course!)

"This collection of fascinating stories, derived from the author's newspaper column, is a nostalgic reflection on life's various facets. This book is a delightful read that encourages readers to reflect on their own life's journey while celebrating the passage of time. It's a book that resonates with the heart and leaves you with a sense of nostalgia and a smile on your face. What truly stands out in this non-fiction gem is the author's ability to make the past come alive, infusing it with warmth. I found nothing to dislike about the book. This memoir is not just a recollection of one woman's life but an exploration of the shared experiences that connect us all. It's a poignant reminder that life's journey is filled with both challenges and cherished moments, and it's our resilience and the bonds we forge that make it truly meaningful.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it's not just a book. It's an emotional journey that touches the very core of your heart. With every page, you'll find yourself immersed in the author's life, her trials and joys, and the love that bound her family together. It's a tribute to the importance of family, the value of relationships, and the power of memories. This book is a heartfelt reminder of the beauty that can be found in the ordinary moments of life. I recommend this book to individuals seeking a touching and thought-provoking read and also to people who enjoy reading about personal life journeys and reflections — Ebere Writers Concept

5.0 out of 5 stars I thought I'd read a few of these delightful essays at a time, but I couldn't stop until the end.

My first positive impression of Kay Cora Jewett's book was the structure. Seven Parts, each with about 15 delightful short essays encouraged me to think I'd read a couple of essays a day. But each essay was so chock full of memorable events, insights, comfort, humor and drama that my plan went out the window and I couldn't put the book down. Kay Cora's life unfolded with such honesty and amazing memories of the details of her experiences that I found myself wishing I had been her friend throughout her journey. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to meet a woman of courage, with a positive view of life in spite of many challenges. Her insights, wisdom, humor and keen observations kept me reading to the end and hoping there are more stories she's willing to share in another book. — Pat Goodell
