Description

A mountainous thundering bull breaks up fighting tribesmen, summoning destiny’s heroes, as an unseen monster turns tribes against tribes, kinsmen against kinsmen, and class against class. Its insatiable greed and divisiveness threaten to plunge mankind into a ravenous den of wolven overlords.

A miraculous seven-headed, winged horse soars from the East to unite destiny’s chosen ones: Sunu, Rufus, and Keresaspa. They must learn from one another and the seven gods in all their myths whose wisdom the horse oracles to arm them against the universal monster and its rising wolfmen.

Sunu the Saxon poet is swelling with pride, making him feel superior to his humble tribesmen and bringing him into dogged conflict with his father, who sees his son’s desires as a betrayal of their virtues. Newly famed for slaying the mountainous thundering bull, Sunu is torn between his family and people against the fame and respect he craves.

Rufus the Roman Stoic loathes fame, warfare, and his father’s sword. The murder of his family by the Empire made him flee to Bohemia, where he lives among warring tribal factions he cannot unite. He’s been assaulted by their king and his wolfskins, and as fate would have it, he’s become a fatherly voice to Sunu, who saved his life.

Keresaspa the Sarmatian priestess bears anger toward a kingly suitor who fatally attacked her after causing their tribe’s separation. Now, her mind is haunted by barking dogs, symbolic of her death, and howling wolves, a reminder of imminent danger. In this tumultuous world, two strangers, Sunu and Rufus, the miraculous horse and the mountainous bull, are the only ones who can keep her and humanity from falling apart.

Advance Praise

“Readers will be intrigued…Hermannson will draw in action fans…Sunu’s character arc, while epic in scope, is charming and fun; [the horse] often brings the hero back to Earth…There’s also an engaging secondary character in the warrior Keresaspa, who sees through Sunu’s callow attempts…The hero learns much through experience, however, and further exploits would be welcome.”—Kirkus

I was hooked from the first page and glad I was able to read this, it had that historical fiction element that I was looking for and thought it worked together in this universe. Hildebrand Hermannson writes a strong story and I’m glad I got to read this.
