My Thoughts on the Book:

Ok, so when I started this book, I wasn't sure if I'll like it, because of the veteran thing, but surprisingly I did.

The Summer I Found You is a beautiful YA contemporary read about two people that had suffered a surprising event in their life that had changed their lives forever, and about how they're coping with it.

First of all, I have to mention something that I disliked after reading this book. This book isn't set in the summer, so why the title? I actually quite like the rest of the title, it fits the story, but it should've been The Spring I Found You, not summer. This book is set in spring! It's like the one that came up with the season haven't even read the book, so I really doubt it's the author, probably the publisher or someone else responsible for marketing who thought it would be better title so they can promote it as a summer book. I don't know for sure, I'm just guessing & rambling, so don't mind me. Anyway, back to the book and what was inside it ;)

Kate was likable enough character, even though she didn't want to face the reality about her health. She was just going around, pretending that nothing is wrong & nothing has changed, like maybe if she pretend it didn't happen, it will go away by itself. I could understand her acting like that, but I also liked that when someone finally got through to her about how serious it actually is, and how her decisions influense on her health & on the rest around her, she doesn't act stubborn or pretend anymore, but does everything she can to help herself, because in the end, if you don't want to help yourself, no one can help you when it comes to a condition like that.

As for Aidan, poor Aidan. He's actually quite an amazing guy, and I really liked him as a character. And I really liked that he still doesn't give up, even though often wants to. But, he pushes on & somehow goes on, day by day, even though he doesn't know what to do with his life anymore.

I really liked the interactions between Aidan & Kate. There was just something simmering between them from the moment they met, some kind of connection. They start to hang out together, more for a distraction, but what starts like a distraction, slowly turns into something more, and I really enjoyed seeing their relationship develop & I really liked them together.

What I didn't like was the fact that Kate wasn't as sincere with Aidan as he was with her, especially after he thoroughly opened up to her, and she kept hiding her condition, which I just thought it was plain not fair to him. So, of course, everything blows up in her face, and she gets quite the wake up call. I didn't want to be in her shoes right then, but she definitely deserved it.

I really enjoyed The Summer I Found You because the couple worked for me. It was good, fun & sad read, without a lot of drama, yet dealing with some serious issues, and overall I enjoyed the complete package, so I recommend this book!

The Summer I Found You is a sweet story of diabetic Kate and one-armed veteran Aidan. Kate is struggling with a break-up and trying to forget she has a disease. Aidan is wounded from war and is dealing with demons of his own. They become a distraction for one another. I loved their chemistry and the realism of their first meeting and time spent together. Perry did a wonderful job portraying Kate. Her actions are believable for a seventeen year old girl; from the way pines for her ex to the way she tries to ignore her disease. I really liked Aidan’s character also. His disability was handled with grace. This book deals with some sensitive issues and I think they were addressed well, although I would have enjoyed had they been explored just a bit more. I liked this story; it was well written and well-paced. While I think it could have been fleshed out a bit, overall The Summer I Found You is a good, quick YA/NA read.

It’s six weeks until her senior prom and Kate’s boyfriend of a year has just broken up with her. If that wasn’t bad enough, she’s dealing with her still recent diagnosis of Type I Diabetes.

Aidan is living in his aunt and uncle’s garage apartment, trying to get his life on track after returning from a tour of duty in Afghanistan. He was involved in a bombing and lost one of his arms. The Army had been everything to Aidan, so to have his career pulled out from under him plus lose a limb, he’s not sure what direction his life should take. He is dealing with survivor guilt after watching his sergeant die right next to him and is having trouble going to visit his widow, a move that may give him some closure to the situation. Aidan is only nineteen and when his cousin suggest he goes out with her best friend to a couple of high school parties, he reluctantly agrees, not really wanting to get involved with a high school girl.

The more time the two spend together the more they find out just how much in common they have. Aidan helps Kate get over her break up and Kate helps Aidan find out where his place is in life. The problem is that Kate hasn’t shared her diabetes with Aidan, something that is going to come back and haunt her. Will Kate’s lie by omission be the breaking point between the two? Or will Aidan’s demons from war haunt him to the point where a relationship just isn’t possible?

I don’t normally read a lot of YA books, and this would definitely be in the YA category vs NA. It was slightly spicy but for the most part pretty tame. The relationship between the two was fun and explored a myriad of feelings that might appear when dealing with the very grown up issues of PTSD and disease management. Both characters are really just kids, but the way in which they deal with things evolves over the course of the book, reflecting the maturity gained along the way.

This was a quick read that I enjoyed. The PTSD and survivor guilt issues were well handled and Kate’s inability to control her disease serves as an important lesson that mismanagement can be the difference between life and death.

The Summer I Found You really is a quick and fun read. It embodies bravery, perseverance and honestly that makes it more fun! I may have found some aspects that I didn't fully like, but overall, I would still recommend this to readers who love semi-serious but quirky stories!

I'm pretty sure I have a weakness for broken guys. Aidan definitely falls into that character. All I wanted to do through this whole book is just hold him and cuddle the hell out of him. Even though he had just gone through hell and didn't know how to get out, he still tried to crawl his way out and owned who he was. He learned to accept his circumstance and forget the regrets.

Both of these characters were very relatable. I feel like they were in different stages of a traumatic experience and handling it different but you could understand and put yourself in their shoes. Kate was definitely frustrating at times but she grew so much by the end of the book. Aidan of course stole my heart and turned it to mush. I felt his pain at every turn and wanted to comfort him. This felt like a real situation. It wasn't all sweet and magical like some books try to portray when a soldier comes home. It was real.

Anything veteran, military, Afghanistan, catches my heart strings. Really enjoyed this book.

It was cute story that dealt with real issues some young adults do face in their life. I did appreciate the supporting characters: the family and friends. Aidan is a young wounded solider and I think his character was portrayed perfectly as well as the issues he faced after his military career was over. On the other hand, I could not stand Kate, she was a very fickle and annoying character; the way she wanted everyone to trust her, but did nothing to better herself was frustrating. It is kind of hard to trust someone to be responsible when they keep passing out in random places; for example, at school, hanging with friends, while driving and etc.

A sweet romance, sex- positive, and I liked that the MC was dealing with disability and PTSD, something that's not often seen in YA.
