This is a super cool coffee table book for people who love cryptids and weird creatures. I thought the illustrations were so delightful and interesting! I will say - this is probably best as a physical book, which highlights the best of this book!

Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Wellfleet Press for the advance reader copy of this book!

I thought this was a very well done manual on cryptids and monsters from around the world. I loved the illustrations for each one and learning about what each culture/continent around the world finds scary. I’d definitely purchase a copy of this for myself or loved one who’s into folklore and cryptids.

Thanks to the author and publisher for the e-arc I received via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

New scary monsters that will haunt your dreams!

What a fun little read! This book is filled with gorgeous illustrations of our favorite cryptids, and new ones alike! This would be great to bring out on Halloween and give the kids a little scare. The short spooky campfire stories were a good addition too. I’d love to give this to my little brother as a gift!

PS: Mothman is my favorite :)

Thank you to NetGalley and Wellfleet Press for this ARC.

I’ve listened to a few episodes of the podcast, and it is terrifying. While scary, it’s very well written and performed, so I was interested in picking up this book. I thought it was a great compendium of cryptids from around the world. There were so many I had never heard of! I felt like I got a mini history lesson from each cryptid. Even if you aren’t a fan of monsters, this is a great look at cultural lore. Thanks to Netgalley for the free copy in exchange for an honest review.

If you needed an encyclopedia for nightmarish creatures, this is your book. Chalk full of folk tales of scary creatures along with pictures. I love that it is divided into areas so you can see what is considered local to you, but still read some of the lore from other parts of the world. Amazing.

Love both the layout and the illustrations in this book. It has a great combination of quick facts and longer format details. Kind of makes me think of a D&D monster guide.

I really enjoyed this. The details were thorough and interesting and the pictures were very detailed. I especially enjoyed the “freaky facts” for the individual creatures. This would definitely be a fun coffee table book for anyone who loves spooky things.

I was lucky enough to get an eARC for this fun folklore book! This covers notorious folklore monsters from 6 continents, each with a history of the creature, a story, and a drawing. You will find such creatures as the Yeti and Mothman to the Kelpie and Yukon-onna. It was a fascinating read and I enjoyed learning about all of these creatures!

Ever wanted to read about the Bray Road Beast, the Canadian Waheela, the Zulu Tokoloshe or the Impundulu, or perhaps the South African Grootslag? Or maybe you want to know all about the Wendigo or the Yuki-onna of Asia, the Cherokee Spearfinger or U'tlun'ta', or the Yara-ma-yha-wo of Aboriginal folklore?
If so, this is the Beast Compendium you need!
It contains a brief history of each creature, followed by a short story about someone encountering one. Only a small proportion of the regional legendary beasts or cryptids from around the world have made it into this compendium.
(For a reference book with more creatures, I recommend the Elemental Encyclopedia of Magical Creatures: the Ultimate A-Z fantastic beings from Myth and Magic, but it lacks the stunning illustrations this one has).

With stunning illustrations of the monsters themselves, each beast comes with a description of its location, sightings, characteristics and classification, followed by a short story about someone who may have encountered one of the beasts.

This beautifully illustrated bestiary has 129 pages and is a treasure to have. It will be in stores on 16th July 2024.
I have the Elemental Encyclopedia of Magical Creatures. I will definitely be buying this one.

Beautifully illustrated and a must have!

This book was a fantastic read. The information about each creature was incredibly interesting, providing a captivating glimpse into the diverse world of folklore. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a broad knowledge of folklore, whether a casual reader or a serious enthusiast.

One of the most impressive aspects is the extensive range of monsters and mythical beings covered, from well-known creatures like vampires to lesser-known entities from various cultures. Each entry is meticulously researched, offering rich details about the origins, characteristics, and cultural significance.

The narrative style is engaging, making it easy to immerse oneself in the stories and legends. The illustrations are also noteworthy, adding a visual dimension that enhances the experience. The book is well-organized, allowing easy navigation through different sections.

In summary, this book is a treasure trove of folklore, offering a comprehensive and engaging exploration of mythical creatures from around the world. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the fantastical and mythical, and serves as a valuable resource for both personal enjoyment and academic study.
