Description

Having spent the last seven years in Texas, Border Patrol Agent Peyton Cote is returning home to northern Maine, hoping it will be a safer environment for her young son.

But the criminal element has turned what was once a quiet corner of the country into an illicit trade route...and there's no telling what they'll do to protect their interests.

When Peyton finds a baby abandoned in a frozen field near the border, she's pulled into a deadly conspiracy that puts everything—her life, her career, her family—at risk.

"Packed with thrills and high-octane action" (Tess Gerritsen, New York Times bestselling author), Bitter Crossing takes fearless heroine Peyton Cote on a breakneck journey through the underground world of dangerous smugglers who play for keeps.

"Bitter Crossing is my favorite kind of page turner, enlivened by a compelling heroine—U.S. Border Patrol Agent Peyton Cote—and set in a place so strongly described it is almost a character itself: the remote no man's land between northern Maine and Canada."—Paul Dorion, author of Massacre Pond

This mystery introduces us to two new characters - Border Patrol agent Peyton Cote and the beautiful landscape of Northern Maine. Peyton and her son have returned to her hometown in search of a quiet life, but when she tries to bust a marijuana dealer but instead finds an abandoned baby, she finds that life in a small town can be as dangerous as anywhere on earth. Peyton is a fearless, feisty heroine and I hope to follow her on many more of her adventures.

Growing up on the US border where Agent Peyton Cote began her career, I was interested in reading about a US Border Patrol agent--especially female and her view toward her job. The story line was intriguing, starting with the finding of the baby and then all of the odd things that began to come along. I did not particularly like how the plot worked out, but it was believable and possibly unique to the location and coincidence of people and places coming together at the 'wrong' time. Peyton Cote is a hero that should easily appeal to readers wanting something out of the ordinary, and the location reminds us there is a border we forget can be as dangerous as our southern one. I look forward to a continuation of the series.
