Description

In transparent, jargon-free language, Paul Brunton makes truly accessible the essence of modern and traditional sudden-awakening teachings. (Advaita, Zen, Dzogchen, Mahamudra etc.) He calls them "Short Path" teachings. A simple recognition, a brief moment of grace, can make what seemed like a far-off spiritual goal actual here and now. The Short Path to Enlightenment abounds with inspiring, reliable pointers for how to cultivate these moments.

As a Nichiren Buddhist, I am always interesting in learning about other sectors of Buddhism, as well as, other Religions. I was gifted a copy of the book“The Short Path to Enlightenment, Instructions for Immediate Awakening” by Author Paul Brunton (Compiled by Mark Scorelle & Jeff Cox) by Larson Publications.
"The Short Path to Enlightenment, Instructions for Immediate Awakening" is not your average novel, so if that’s what you’re looking for this is not it, however the book flowed very nicely and was very easy to read. Matter of fact is stated on the cover of the book “... Read this book as you would a scripture or a sutra and let it open your eyes to eternity.” (Adyashanti) and I agree with this statement wholeheartedly.
Although the book is titled “The Short Path to Enlightenment, Instructions for Immediate Awakening” the book does not actually instruct you on how to achieve immediate awakening, it’s actually a guide, and this book guides you as you enter the various stages of self realizations.
The author Paul Brunton explores the modern and traditional teachings of Buddhism teachings; however I would not call it a book about Buddhism or Christianity or any other Religion. This book guides you on how to move from the long path of enlightenment to the short path of enlightenment by going beyond your ordinary way of thinking and seeing.
I really believe that regardless of what sector of Buddhism or Religion you belong to, everyone can apply the teachings and exercises in this book to their daily lives. I think the point that author Paul Brunton was trying to teaches us is…everything that we need in order to change a negative to a positive in our lives is within us. We have the power and the tools to build the lives that we want and the sooner we are awaken to the fact, the sooner our long path becomes our short path because we are awaken to things that we take for granted, starting with ourselves and our own fears.

“Those who find that beyond the Light they must pass through the void, the unbounded emptiness, often draw back affrighted and refuse to venture farther” (23-8-35 The Short Path to Enlightenment, Instructions for Immediate Awakening, Paul Brunton)

I received an ARC from the Publisher and NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

This is such an interesting and well written non-fiction book. The author is very straight-forward in his presentation and makes it very readable and enlightening.

I have personally used several of the techniques and was pleasantly surprised by the results. I feel more in tune with my inner self.

This book is written to help the reader find a shorter path to enlightenment than the traditional years of meditation required to allow you to live in the moment and view reality from a more spiritual perspective. The reader is offered steps that bring about awareness in a fairly short amount of time -- which is very helpful compared to many of the books I have read. It offers concepts that might need some deep thought to grasp if the reader is new to the idea of spiritual enlightenment from this perspective, but has a glossary attached so that it is truly accessible to every reader.

In this era of information overload, addiction to technological devices, and constant external connections, this book is literally a breath of fresh air. Allowing the reader to turn inwards and understand the true self as it is without distractions is a true gift and that is exactly what this book offers.

I recommend taking that gift and putting it to (immediate) use.
