Description
In this clean Regency romance, a woman with a scandalous past (and an even more scandalous secret) swears off love--until the man who broke her heart needs her help. What could possibly go wrong? Perfect for fans of Tessa Dare and Eloisa James looking for a low-spice, witty Regency romance, "Sense and Suitability is a sweet, second-chance Regency romance with an Austenesque flair." (USA TODAY bestselling author, Mimi Matthews)
After two failed social seasons, her family may think the third time will be a charm, but Emmeline Lockhart just wants to survive with her dignity (and singleness) intact. She thought she'd found her perfect match in Simon Reeves--charming, handsome, a veritable hero from a novel--until he vanished from her life without so much as a "farewell" or "my deepest regrets" (or even a vague apology scribbled on the back of a calling card). Lesson learned: never fall for a man known for his charm.
Fortunately, and unlike many of the other eligible young ladies of the ton, Emmeline has no need for a husband--because she's already found success in her scandalous (and very anonymous) profession as an author. Why bother with matrimony when she can make her own fortune and write men exactly the way she wants them?
But fate--or the misfortune of Simon's reckless patriarchs--has other plans. Simon's once-proud estate is in shambles, his family fortune has been gambled away, and the younger impressionable siblings in his care are running wild across his estate (and possibly across all of England). Simon is in desperate need of a wealthy, prestigious bride . . . and a friend.
Emmeline may not fit the role of heiress, but she can certainly be a friend. Just a friend. She'll help him find a suitable match, ensure his reputation remains intact, and keep things strictly platonic--no matter how dangerously appealing his new-and-improved sincerity and regret may be.
There's just one small problem: the undeniable chemistry that still smolders between them. Can Emme play matchmaker for the man she's still in love with without losing her heart all over again? And is it possible that some love stories--especially the messy, inconvenient, impossible ones--are worthy of a rewrite?
Filled with lively banter, adorable children, a frog named Blast, and swoony kisses, Sense and Suitability is the sweet Regency romance you've been looking for. Basham brings her signature humor to the Regency era where social strictures keep the tension tight in this second-chance, enemies-to-lovers romance.

This was an incredibly delightful read. A Regency romance that was exactly what I needed, sweet and funny and a little bit chaotic.
Emmeline and Simon met by chance, became friends and fell in love. But on the night they were to be engaged, he didn't show, just his note and no explanations. Two years later, he's back, now a Viscount of Ravenscross, after a sudden passing of both his cousin and his father. He was left with a title, debts, an estate in ruins and younger siblings in his care. His only hope, to marry someone with money. Emmie, seeing the position that he is in now, offers her help with finding him a suitable bride. But will they be able to be only friends or will their feelings just make everything even more complicated. And with Emmie carrying a secret that might tear them both apart, will they be able to find their happily ever after.
I loved this story so much. Emmie was such an amazing character, witty and so incredibly kind. I adored her. And Simon really redeemed himself. I loved how he was with his sibling and the way he loved Emmie.
His sibling were wonderful, Fia with her adorableness, Lottie with her fierceness, and Will with his quiet but insightful presence. They were such a great addition to the story.
So were Ben and Aster and Thomas. I would love to read their stories too.
Also, I have to say Aunt Bean's lessons were hilarious, I was laughing so hard. And Aunt Agatha did grow on me at the end. And of course, Blast-It-All deserves a special mention.
This was a story full of swoony moments, chance encounters, funny and witty exchanges and mischief. Full of heart and characters that made it special.
This was my first novel by this author, but I will definitely read more. I really enjoyed her writing.
I absolutely adored this novel for the most part. I really loved Simon and Emme. They were so fun and cute together.
Basham did a great job with these two even though some of it was a little repetitive I still found it an enjoyable and a funny read. A delightful novel that makes reading fun once again. This one made my day.
I really hated to say goodbye to these wonderful characters that I felt like had become family.
I finished this story in one evening because it was so good. I even found myself giggling in some places.
Emme just has this charismatic energy that made me love her instantly. Even though she did go overboard at certain times.
In certain ways she reminds me of myself which was why I was able to connect with her lol.
5 stars for a job well done in keeping my attention all the way through. I love this author so I knew I had to have this book. I wasn't disappointed at all!
My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine.

Sense and Suitability is a delightful Regency romance filled with humor, heart, and unforgettable characters. Emmeline and Simon's second-chance love story is both swoon-worthy and filled with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, especially with their quirky side characters like Aunt Bean and the lovable frog, Blast.
I absolutely adored Emme, she’s witty, kind, and relatable, while Simon's redemption arc is perfectly done. Their chemistry is undeniable, and the tension between their growing feelings and the complicated situations they find themselves in made for such a captivating read. The dynamics, the mischief, and the heartfelt moments kept me hooked from start to finish.
Pepper Basham’s writing is as charming as always, blending sweet romance with humor and just the right touch of emotional depth. If you love Regency romances with strong characters, witty dialogue, and a swoony, slow-burn romance, this is a must-read!
I absolutely loved Pepper Basham’s regency novel, Sense and Suitability! This is her first regency, and it’s perfect, with humor, and love, and social balls, and gossip and reputations and the amazing hero and heroine. All of this and more comes to you in a very easy to read, clean story that is full of memorable characters, and leads you in various emotions, in a good way! I’m hoping for a sequel! Wonderful book! I received an ARC from NetGalley, but this review is my own true opinion.
I haven’t read historical romance in such a long time, but lately I found myself craving romantic stories — and stumbling upon Sense and Suitability was such a wonderful surprise. Pepper Basham delivers a charming and witty homage to Jane Austen, blending Regency romance with a fresh, modern sensibility in a way that feels cozy, uplifting, and full of heart.
This is a short novel where the plot moves quickly, keeping you engaged from start to finish. I truly loved our heroine, Emme, and her “secret,” which made the story even richer. Her passion is something she’s willing to fight for, and that determination gave her character a special spark. Simon, our hero, did frustrate me at times with the way he acted toward Emme, but thankfully his character arc developed nicely by the end, making his journey satisfying to watch unfold.
Basham also shines in creating secondary characters who all have weight, purpose, and distinct personalities. Their roles enrich the story and deepen the world around Emme and Simon. I especially found myself wanting to know more about Arianne — and I sincerely hope that if there’s a sequel or companion novel, we’ll get to follow her story next.
My only small complaint is that I was hoping for the scene of the first proposal to be expanded — either given a longer chapter or even a chapter of its own. It felt like a moment that deserved just a bit more space to breathe. That said, everything else was so enjoyable and heartwarming to read.
With sweet, faith-filled themes of family, forgiveness, and self-discovery, Sense and Suitability offers a delightful balance of heart, humor, and historical flair. Perfect for fans of Austen retellings, clean historical romance, and feel-good love stories with thoughtful characters, this novel is a lovely addition to your TBR.

SENSE AND SUITABILITY by PEPPER BASHAM is a deliciously romantic Regency novel which takes place in England in the height of the St Groves season. Simon Reeves, nephew to the Viscount of Ravenscross, is about to propose to Emmeline Lockhart, the love of his life, when the news of his father’s and cousin’s deaths makes it necessary to marry for moey to save his family from ruin……..
With a broken heart, Emme goes from hurt and humiliation, to wanting to help save Simon and his family from ruin, even going so far as to try and find him a suitable bride. His delightful younger siblings have a great deal to do with her wanting to see his family restored……..
Emme is a published author at a time when women authors are seen to be scandalous creatures. She is supported in this by her clergyman cousin, Thomas Bridges. A great admirer of the author of Sense and Sensibility, she decides to write a novel that is more true to life than the gothic novels she wrote before. I like the way Simon and Emme’s story is compared to that of the characters in the Jane Austen novel……
The story is full of ups and downs, with witty dialogue and some hilarious moments, told against the rigid rules of nineteenth century society.
This is amost enjoyable read and one I highly recommend.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Thomas Nelson. The opinions in this review are completely my own.
After having her heart shattered by Simon Reeves, whom she believed to be her perfect match, Emmeline has endured two unsuccessful social seasons. As the daughter of a respected country gentleman, Emme enjoys a certain status, but she does not come from wealth, and she harbors a significant and scandalous secret: she is a published author. Simon, facing unexpected financial challenges, must seek a wife with a substantial dowry.
Unlike other young women, Emme feels no pressing need for a husband due to her success as a writer, especially since her heart belongs to Simon. Nevertheless, she vows to help him find his ideal match—a woman who can provide the financial stability he desperately needs. With both of his parents deceased, Emme is aware that aiding Simon in this quest is no simple task. He has the added responsibility of caring for three spirited younger siblings, and their estate is in disrepair, compounded by a family fortune that has been squandered away through gambling.
Amidst all this, there is undeniable chemistry between Simon and Emme. However, she is resolute in her determination to remain just a friend while assisting him in his search for the perfect bride. This story is enriched by intriguing characters and captivating situations. I found until the last page was turned, it was difficult to put down.

Can I call this Bridgeton on wheels? Sure felt like it. I loved the dialougue. I just finished another book that had cringe worthy dialogue and this was a great book to cure me! I love the characters as well, their dynamic throughout the story was well written and kept me engage. I also got frustrated at times, but not in a bad way, it's part of the plot 🤣 If you like a book with swoon worthy moments this is it.

After reading Some like it Scot, i immediately knew Pepper Basham was gonna be an auto-buy author for me.
And this book only makes me more sure of that.
When I tell you I had the time of my life reading Sense and Suitability!
Enemies to lovers with incredible banter.
Perfect book for anyone looking to read a clean feel-good romance book.
Thanks NetGalley for this ARC !!
This was such a cozy, romantic comedy ! It’s set in the regency era and gives Jane Austen vibes.
Low spice, banter, second chance romance, and lovable characters!!
If you loved the Bridgerton series give this book a try !! The writing was unique and made you feel like you were in that era with Emme our MC.

What a fun regency romance read with humor throughout. I don't read a lot of regency but this one was a lovely ready.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
It got my attention immediately with the prologue and made me want to read more. It's a story of a lovely, fun, young lady growing up where one is expected to marry at a certain age. She is not so very inclined as she wants love, not money. Meet the rogue and our story grows. but all is not as it seems!
There are the interfering family members, the nasty bad person and just society itself. There are is a lot of push-pull going on and it's much like an obstacle course.
I truly loved the view on women authors and how women are treated in the age.
This is a story to love and cheer for!
Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for allowing me to read this advanced copy.

This book delighted me from page one to the very last. It’s a nod to Sense and Sensibility with a delightful romance. The heroine is swilling to sacrifice her future for the benefit of the hero, while he is sinking under the weight of responsibility. Between a failing estate, the needs of his siblings, and the obligations to satisfy his aunt, he is struggling to find a path forward. The book is filled with sweet moments and a touching romance. I highly recommend this book to those who love the regency time period with romance and heart.

Oh, what can I say?! This book has it all: the longing, the yearning, the struggles, the rules and expectations of society, the friendships, the fun - with great characters, great chemistry, true romance and true love! The writing is just superb. All of the characters are beautifully delineated as real people with real emotions and struggles. And they really draw you in. You could just feel the emotions, the feels, the craving of affection, the impossibility of their love but oh, their love is real and heartfelt!
The secondary characters were a perfect addition to the story. Emme’s cousin Thomas was clever, so sweet, loyal and so supportive of Emme. I loved him being reasonable and kindly redirecting when his mother spouted one of her opinions. All of the siblings were real and such beautiful people: funny Aster, cutie Fia with her frog Blast, feisty Lottie and even shy William. The housekeeper Mrs. Patterson. Her father. You can only fall in love with all of them and wanting to hug them and care for them - so you can see why Emme did.
A special mention to the two aunts in the book: Emme’s aunt Bean and Simon’s aunt Agatha were so very different but such good additions to the story. Aunt Bean’s lessons on how to “catch” a husband were just as hilarious as ridiculous. And I felt for aunt Agatha who clearly loved her family very much and did what she could to provide aid and structure the way she saw fit.
Simon was so strong, but so burdened with the responsibilities and struggles that came with inheriting the title, the estate and his younger orphaned siblings. Emme has such a big heart, was so loyal, compassionate and loving to want to help Simon and his family… This truly is a heartfelt story, so beautiful!
I loved the comparisons to ‘Sense and Sensibility’ but how clever of the author to not make it in exactly a similar story. I liked that Emme was an author, too.
The book pulls at your heartstrings, makes you sigh, smile and feel for the characters involved, but also has a lot of humor and makes you laugh: The scene with William and Lottie discussing whether Simon was daft is hilarious, as are the scenes with Fia (and her frog!), the lectures by aunt Bean - I laughed and loved it!
Aster said: Your stories reveal the strength of the human spirit, the beauty of a generous heart, and the persistence of faithful love. The same is true of this story. I highly and wholeheartedly recommend this book. Go buy it and enjoy it, you won’t regret it!
Thank you Dragonblade Publishing, Netgalley and author for providing an advanced copy of this book. I voluntarily read and reviewed it; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
The incredible author, who writes beautifully in so many genres, has penned her first Regency historical romance with a nod to Jane Austen and I loved it completely! Janeites will adore it too with its compelling characters drawn with wit and insight. Highly recommended!
This is a fantastic regency novel full of Jane Austin inspired wit and swooning. I look forward to it being on my shelf one day. I hope that I get to read more of these characters one day, a few stories that I'm dying to find out! Thankyou for allowing me to be an ARC reader. It was just delightful.

This is how you write a historical romance. Reminded me of Jane Austen, which is the highest praise I can offer. Emme and Simon are a great couple to watch fall in love. All the characters were amazing. Little Fia stole my heart. This is a romance to make you swoon. It was clean, which I appreciate. They didn’t have to have multiple sex scenes to make this a love story. I wish more authors would take note of this. Sex does NOT equal love. Loved every single moment and character. I hope this author writes more of this genre. Definitely a top contender for one of my favorite books of the year.

Pepper has outdone herself with this one.
This is a wonderful Regency love story that often doesn't feel like a Regency. I loved that is was about a woman writer before women 'were supposed' to be writers.
I loved the children and the dialogue with them. I loved Fia and her frogs, diamonds and Blast!
This is a story filled with heart, hope and wit. It is romantic with lots of yearning. Yet there is no small amount of forgiveness and healing.
Around half way through I get weary of the "they can't be together' talk.
But I loved it anyway!
Thank you to Net Galley for allowing me to read this book. The opinions are entirely my own.
This is a book where hope defies all odds, bringing to life the dilemma of love versus duty in such a visceral manner. Sense and Suitability not only ripped my heart out while reading it, but it mended it right back up the more time I spent getting to see Emmeline and Simon in action. This captivating story is the most sublime second chance romance I've had the pleasure of reading where my emotions went along with the roller coaster between reality and dreams. Marketed as clean fiction, Christian readers will be delighted to know that there are powerful and overt themes about God as the Author of our lives, which translates well into how Emmeline and Simon need to look beyond themselves for solutions. At the same time, these two characters are the definition of what it means to keep doing the next, right thing in life, not sitting back as passive observers of their circumstances.
I love that Sense and Sensibility is heavily referenced, with much inspiration drawn from the characters of the book. There are also traces of Catherine Morland, Emma Woodhouse, and Fanny Price (including a funny misassumption) sprinkled throughout, with even more Jane Austen Easter eggs for the avid reader to find. More than anything, I feel like this book delves into Elinor Dashwood's heart with fine precision and in such a profound manner as to exemplify what sacrificial love looks and feels like. Readers who love Jane Austen will find that Sense and Suitability brilliantly captures the complex world of the Regency era by thoroughly examining the motivations of the heart versus the dictates of society. It's a wholly satisfying book that expounds on forgiveness, triumph, and character in the most suitable of ways.
Bridgerton season 4 preview had me in a mood and this book was just what I needed until we can watch it in 2026 🥹 loved the chemistry of our main characters they had me giggling at some parts. The banter 👀 if you enjoy regency romance this is definitely a book you need to have on your radar. Highly recommend. Comes out Sept 17.
I enjoyed this book! Very sweet romance.
I loved the inclusion of one of the characters reading the Austen novel 'Sense and Sensibility', and how relatable it was to the story overall.
For the most part the writing was great, although there are parts that were kind of repetitive, which made certain aspects of the story drag a little.
There was witty dialog, a bit of humor sprinkled throughout, and some very emotional moments.
Clean romance with mild kissing.
Interesting supporting and side characters.
I loved little Fia and her pet frog 'Blast" - lol - which proved for some interesting and funny situations.
I look forward to more of this style of writing from this author!
I received an ARC from NetGalley, but my review is my own personal opinion.
I highly recommend this book!

If this book were a debutante, it would surely be the diamond of the season. The banter, the pining, the mutual I-want-you-but-can't-have-you...it was cheff's kiss. This book is witty, funny and it touches on subjects that really touch on the reader's sensitivity and humanity to others. A man in an impossible situation, a woman who understands. This second-chance regency romance had me hooked from page 1 and I have been unable to think about anything else for the entirety of it.
Emme is tough, intelligent, witty and sharp. She's kind and compassionate, with a head for business and a heart for adventures. Simon is overwraught with responsibility, but kind nonetheless. His character is strong but troubled and he makes the most of what he receives. He is a good soul (and definitely a man written by a woman, cause he's perfect!) Their romance will steal your breath, without once entering the bedroom. Every kiss steals your breath and every brush of their hands will make you pine as hard as they do.
The children were so sweet and fiesty and fiercely good that I loved each of them for their unique personalities. I loved Aunt Bean's lessons in matrimony and Ben's friendship and character. Simon and Emme are both sweet, good characters, who's love endures the worst forms of torture.
Every moment of this book had me laughing, hurting, pining, loving and squealing!
This novel absolutely captivated me! That kiss! It's brilliantly written, packed with humor, and radiates so much warmth. The characters are a pure delight, each one a joy to encounter. I love how the story doesn’t take itself too seriously—especially those hilarious moments when the heroine finds herself in utterly ridiculous predicaments. It draws you in even deeper! I can already see myself diving back into this gem for a re-read! Reading it felt like a refreshing breeze on a sunny afternoon—light, witty, and surprisingly touching. I couldn't tear myself away! The playful banter and the slow-burn tension kept me on the edge of my seat. Plus, I absolutely adored that the female protagonist was a writer herself!

Pepper Basham does not disappoint when it comes to her writing. This lovely regency novel with some of the vibes of Jane Austen will leave you in awe. I will admit if I had to choose between having a husband or career I would probably choose the career. However things turned out for the best which is what matters in this book.
Our main heroine Emmeline thought she had found her handsome prince the dashing Simon. However, before they announced their engagement he disappeared without a trace. Instead of crying her eyes out she takes solitude in dedicating herself to her secret writing career. You have to admit she is brave in light of the situation and didn't resort to being dramatic.
However two years later Simon has returned and is in financial ruin. He is also responsible for his younger siblings and he needs a way to find a wealthy bride and fast. Emmeline being the kind and considerate soul she is agrees to help him. However, will helping him cause her to fall in love with him all over again.
Overall this novel was sweet and hilarious.
I received an arc copy from Netgalley and all opinions are of my own.
Delightful homage to “Sense and Sensibility”. This book is perfect for those who want regency romance without spicy scenes. There is definitely chemistry and kissing, but should be no pearl-clutching. This second-chance romance follows Emme and Simon, who were close to getting engaged until Simon ghosts her in a garden. Two years later, they enter each others orbits again as Simon, now head of a struggling estate, is seeking a wealthy wife. Emme decides he needs a friend after learning of his situation and meeting his younger siblings. Showing Christian charity, she decides to help Simon find a wife as well as befriend his younger siblings who have lost a lot in a short amount of time. This story highlights the societal pressures for women, and marriages. Nice, fast read that will hold your interest. Pick this one up at your bookstore.

This book just kept getting better and better! I love Pepper Basham’s delightful characters—so charming and full of personality. The witty banter kept me smiling, the comedic scenes had me laughing, and the sweet romance had me sighing and cheering for these two the whole way through.
There’s such a relatable warmth in this story, woven together with a strong sense of hope that lingers long after the final page. And for fellow Jane Austen fans—the Sense and Sensibility references are the perfect cherry on top!
A heartwarming must-read for 2025!

“Gentlewomen had to be rescued by patrimony, inheritance, or death, for they are not usually given a living and were certainly not allowed to earn one”
I have read a couple of Pepper Basham books and they are okay. I think Basham has found her sweet spot with this one. In fact, I would read a sequel/series of the characters in this book. Regency romance, humor, and family drama? Yes, please. Mark your calendars for October 2025 because that is when this beauty hits shelves.

This is Pepper Basham 's Regency debut, if I recall correctly, and she has hit it out of the park! So good!! I'm definitely a fan and have read a lot of her contemporaries as well as Freddie & Grace mysteries, and "Sense and Suitability" is now firmly my new favorite Basham book!
This book is so sweet, with two people who are soulmates separated by very real circumstance. There is some miscommunication in the beginning, but later I love how Simon and Emme are open and put each other's well-being first in trying to resolve their situation.
It's also a love letter to women authors, women's fiction, readers, Jane Austen, and above all "Sense and Sensibility"!

I absolutely loved this story. The characters were loveable!
There was so much passion without the spice, I loved that Emme wrote their love story and Simon got to read it.
Hilarious twist at the end with Simon joking about Emme proposing to him!
This is such a beautiful love story without all the graphic sex scenes. Would be happy to recommend this to my grandma and that is the highest praise

I discovered Pepper Basham's books here on NetGalley and fell in love with her writing and easy storytelling, she never disappoints. This book is a captivating romance, hard to put down. I liked how she wrote the second-chance and miscommunication tropes, nicely detailed.
In this book, she shows the reality that sometimes, love is not enough, but that it can overcome every adversity. Our main characters, Emmeline and Simon, have been separated for two years because of a slight miscommunication, which eventually ended happily, regardless of scandals, finances and aunts who want to help.
Overall, I give this book 5, well-earned stars.

What a delightful cast of characters.
I was rooting for Emmeline and Simon the whole time. Courting the love of her life only to be unexpectedly spurned and left behind. Emme devotes herself to her secret writing projects. Only to have Simon return to the area. A lot of mischief and mayhem ensues. Thank you to NetGalley for letting me read this lovely book in advance!

Emme had her heart broken two years ago by a man she thought wanted to marry her. She's moved on, pouring her emotions into her clandestine novels. Her aunt comes to stay, promising to have her married by the end of the season. She hopes her secret project will afford her the option of not marrying, though only her cousin knows her secret. When she discovers Simon, her former paramour, is back in town, she's determined to avoid him, though that turns out to be nearly impossible. Simon is struggling with the weight of his new and unexpected viscount title, the care of a mismanaged estate, and three of his younger siblings. If only he wasn't in need of money to help save his estate, he'd marry Emme in a heartbeat. His aunt has promised to support him as long as he avoids scandal and marries well. When Emme discovers Simon's struggles, she's determined to help him even though it means helping him find a more suitable wife. Can they move beyond their feelings or will they be able to come up with a way to get everything they want?
A very fun regency romcom with plenty of laughs, swoon, and heart.

This is simply a delightful, charming story that was so fun to read. I loved the humor, the sweet tender moments, the longing, and tension and the way the characters grew in understanding and acceptance. I really enjoyed Emme and Simon’s story, it was so sweet, so much chemistry and with so many obstacles to over because of society’s expectations. Their siblings, Aster, Lottie, Fia and Will add so much wit, humor and fun to the story. Emme’s Aunt Bean was so hilarious and ridiculous with her lessons on how to catch a husband. A great Regency romance, that makes you feel like you are really reading in that time period. I highly recommend this book, grab a copy and enjoy!
Thanks to NetGalley for this advanced copy, this is my own opinion.

Sense and Suitability by Pepper Basham is a charming Regency romcom brimming with wit and heart. Emmeline, a secret novelist healing from past heartbreak, faces societal constraints and her eccentric Aunt Bean’s comical marriage schemes. Simon, now a viscount, wrestles with a crumbling estate and family responsibilities, his heart still drawn to Emme despite pressures to marry well. Their chemistry sizzles through sharp banter, tender moments, and societal hurdles. Basham’s vivid period setting immerses readers, while Emme’s cousin, Simon’s lively siblings, and the hilarious Aunt Bean add humor and depth. This second-chance, enemies-to-lovers tale balances longing, growth, and a rival’s schemes, culminating in a delightful HEA. Dual perspectives enhance the heartfelt narrative, making it a must-read for Regency romance fans. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

What an absolutely delightful story with a unique plot and loveable characters, with the exclusion of those villainous wretches. I loved this book! Emmeline was such a fun character and I loved her so much. I love a regency lady who has a secret career everyone wouldn’t approve of. Simon was great and learning about what happened to tear them apart before was fun. I recommend!

Sense and Suitability was a first read for me. I enjoyed the story line of recapturing a love that has gone awry. Making right what went wrong and the ups and downs to get there--Knowing in the end that love will conquer all!!!
[Thank you to @netgalley and to Thomas Nelson for my gifted copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.]
What an easy five stars this was!
I adore Pepper Basham’s writing and humor (she nails the banter every time,) and her books are always some of my favorites. I was SO thrilled when I heard she was writing a regency romance, and this book was certainly all that I hoped it would be.
I loved the nods to Austen titles, especially “Sense and Sensibility,” and I absolutely loved Emmeline and Simon. The whole host of characters in this book were lovely. I want a sequel!
This book touches on the importance of fiction and how fiction can point people to truth and to Christ, just like nonfiction can. This is such an important conversation!
“Sense and Suitability” is a sweet/clean, second-chance regency romantic comedy. I did see the book advertised as an enemies-to-lovers romcom, but I don’t think that this title quite fits with my idea of an enemies-to-lovers trope, though there are definitely some *justified* bitter feelings. ;) Just thought I would share that thought, in case it could be helpful to anyone. As always, feel free to ask any questions!
I highly recommend “Sense and Suitability!”

I absolutely adored 'Sense and Suitability'! I love Pepper Basham's expert writing skills that hook me in and send me to another place and time, all with charm and an uplifting tenor. I didn't see how this could ever turn out positively for Emmeline and Simon, but with great diligence to the sense of the time period hope was fulfilled for me. I knew that there had to be a happy ending, but I just didn't see haw it could happen, but Pepper Basham skillfully wove the trail to happiness. I was sorry when it ended and I want more of these characters.

Gorgeous gorgeous novel that I stayed up later than acceptable to read! Second-chance regency romances are a little rarer to come by than the usual insta-love, so I really appreciated this treat from Pepper Basham. Simon's care for his siblings, Emme and Thomas' friendship, and of course the crackling tension between Simon and Emme brought this novel to life. Seeing Simon's reaction every time Fia called out the frog's name was priceless. And Thomas was a GEM: "It's one thing to love a woman for the way she makes you feel, but it's another thing entirely to admire her for who she is." - I need him in a sequel! My only small personal criticism is that from the blurb, I was expecting more of the 'matchmaking friend' element, but it stayed more in the 'hurt former lovers' territory than friends for the majority of the novel. However, I'm more than happy to trade that in, given Emme and Simon's iconic reunion scene a couple of years after he vanished- it's one that's going to be replaying in my mind a lot ;)

An absolute Austen! A delicious page-turner that embodies the very essence of a Jane Austen novel with a strong female lead, sprinkles of rom com, and, of course, social realism. With every character so thoughtfully crafted, I feel I must deliver no less than a 5 star rating (an absolutely rarity for me). A must-read for the fall!

First book I’ve read of PB. Really enjoyed it. It was well written, funny and had a good pace. I hope there are more books to come and this is a series of sorts cause I would really like to the stories of Aster, Ben and Thomas…
I was a bit leery when I first saw the title (Janet Austen is one of my favorite authors and I wasn’t too sure about the nod to Sense and Sensibility), but this book was an absolutely delightful regency romance that I think even Austen herself would be proud of! Sweet characters, engaging plot, witty banter, themes of redemption and devotion.
If you love Bridgerton but don’t want the spice, you’ll love this book!! 👏🏽 While it is definitely closed-door/no-spice, it still has some steamy moments. No language, violence or gore. I’d recommend to mature teens and adults.

What a fun read!! I love, loved this book!!
I have to admit that I’m a bit biased when it comes to pepper basham books - her storytelling is always top notch!
This is a lovely story about a heroine and who you wish her hero would be…. But it honestly seems to be an impossible thing.
The discovery of the how and the why was wonderful.

I think this might be my new favorite read of the year! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I plan to delve into Pepper Basham's other work very soon.
Two years prior, Emmeline Lockhart and Simon Reeves were about to become engaged after a three-month courtship. But when disaster struck his family, Simon was forced to choose duty over love as he learned to navigate his new life. However, two years later, when the pair are thrust together again, they are as much in danger of being as in love with each other again as they were before.
I want to take care not to spoil anything, but I must say that I loved this clean second-chance romance so much. It's not my usual trope, but Basham did this masterfully and I adored it!
Thank you so much to Thomas Nelson, Pepper Basham, and NetGalley for providing this ARC. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own in this honest review.
Pepper has done it again!!
I adored this story and simply could not put this one down. As a huge Austen fan and a Basham fan I was very eager to see how she would blend these two worlds together and it did not disappoint. If he does not yearn the way Simon does then count me out. My cheeks hurt from smiling so much. Do yourself a favor and pick up this book.

Anything involving Freddie and Gracie is a welcome distraction.
LOVED this mystery to the very last page. I laughed out loud, swooned over handsome Freddie and his love for his bride. I was really happy to see Blake part of this book again. He's a great character. Looking forward to the next one. No, I'm serious. When is it coming out?
What can I say except—oh my goodness, she’s done it again! This Regency story is brimming with heart, humor, and a good dose of romance.
Emmeline Lockhart has sworn off love ever since her almost-fiancé, Simon Reeves, left her standing alone in the garden. She has a secret, thriving writing career, with no intention of falling for another liar. Simon, meanwhile, let the love of his life, Emmeline, slip through his fingers when tragedy turned his world upside down. With his father and cousin gone, Simon became a viscount and must marry for money to save his family’s estate and keep a roof over his siblings’ heads.
Thrown together in polite society, Emmeline and Simon try their best to avoid each other. But between undeniable sparks and an accidental run-ins, old feelings resurface. Knowing she, a country gentleman's daughter, could never be what Simon needs, she agrees to help Simon find a suitable wife to secure his family’s future. What could possibly go wrong?
I couldn’t put this book down. Written in Pepper’s ever-clever style, it was pure joy to see Emmeline and Simon navigate their way from once in love to heartbreak and back to something even deeper. Whenever Simon’s siblings entered the story, they stole the page—especially his youngest sister with her messy person and a frog named Blast (Simon’s favorite exclamation!).
This story captured my heart, made me laugh, and kept me reading long past bedtime. Thank you for another delightful read. Highly recommend!

Pepper Basham can do no wrong in my book! I loved this take on a Jane Austen novel! Pepper has such a funny voice in her writing that is also relatable even when she's writing about 18th century England!

A charming and unexpected homage to Sense and Sensibility, Sense and Suitability delights with its wit, warmth, and a heroine you won’t soon forget. Emme is bold, unconventional, and refreshingly self-assured as she pushes against cultural expectations—not only to follow her own dreams, but to fiercely protect those she loves. Her journey is as inspiring as it is heartfelt. And then there’s Simon—evolving, earnest, and compelling in his pursuit of growth. Watching him grapple with whether he truly deserves Emme's heart against all odds adds a beautifully introspective layer to this clean Regency romance.
With Basham’s signature humor woven through every page, the story is packed with vibrant banter, endearing children, mishaps and true romance—all while keeping things sweet and proper. This second-chance, enemies-to-lovers tale brings just enough social tension to keep you turning pages, while celebrating the timeless virtues of honor, sacrifice, and love.
A must-read for fans of clean romance and Austen-inspired storytelling.

Emmeline Lockhart's journey through the complexities of love and independence is nothing short of captivating. After two unsuccessful social seasons, she is determined to maintain her dignity, especially after being ghosted by the charming Simon Reeves—an experience that leaves her wary of romantic entanglements. What makes Emmeline's story truly remarkable is her ability to thrive as a successful, anonymous author, finding fulfillment outside of traditional marriage.
The plot thickens as Simon's once-illustrious estate falls into disarray, compelling him to seek a wealthy bride while grappling with his responsibilities towards his unruly siblings. Emmeline steps in as a supportive friend, intent on helping Simon without compromising her heart. Their undeniable chemistry adds layers of tension and emotion, making the reader root for them despite their complicated history.
The writing is engaging, the characters are well-developed, and the themes of friendship, love, and self-discovery resonate deeply. This story beautifully illustrates that some love stories, no matter how messy, deserve a second chance. A must-read for anyone who appreciates romance that challenges societal norms!
This is one of those books that make you resent real life for interrupting your reading time.
Pepper Basham's Sense and Suitability is everything I love in a clean romance and more! It's a sweet, witty, and heartfelt read that pulls you in and doesn't let you go until the very last page. This is the second of Basham's books I have read. She has a way of crafting stories that feel like cozy cups of tea.
What sets this book apart is its engaging blend of Austen-inspired charm with a distinctly modern (yet timeless) voice. Basham has a gift for writing characters you genuinely root for (flawed, funny, and fully human). The chemistry is warm and genuine, the pacing is spot-on, and the dialogue sparkles. Best of all, the romance remains clean and wholesome, allowing the emotional connection and personal growth of the characters to shine.
I found myself lost in the storyline. Every time I had to put it down, I was a little bit grumpy about it. It's not just a romance- it's a feel-good escape that reminds you why you love reading in the first place.
Highly recommended for anyone who wants a story that makes their heart happy.
Why you should read it:
-Engaging, heartfelt writing style
-Clean romance with substance and spark
-A storyline that’s hard to put down
-Perfect blend of humor, heart, and hope
I can’t wait to read more from this author (though I may need to clear my calendar next time)!

This was the cutest book! First of all the cover is so cute and it made me want to pick it up! This is a closed door romance and I loved it so much!
Do you love reading Regency Romances but don’t love the bedroom shenanigans that might sneak up on you? This laugh out loud closed door romance is for you!
Emme’s aunt comes to town determined to find marriage matches for her nieces.
Our hero, Simon the Viscount, also has a meddlesome Aunt that’s determined to marry him off. Emma and Simon have a past with each other that needs to remain in the past.
If the plot doesn’t sway you into reading this book there’s also frog or two compliments of Simon’s little sister, Fia.

This book had me grinning, swooning, and muttering “oh noooo” under my breath more than once. A second-chance Regency romance with just the right mix of heart, chaos, and tension? Say less.
So here’s the setup: Emmeline and Simon met by pure chance, became friends, and yeah—fell in love. Things were moving toward an engagement… until Simon pulled a disappearing act. No explanation, just a note. Classic heartbreak. Fast-forward two years: he’s back. Now he’s a viscount, dealing with a broken-down estate, way too much debt, and three younger siblings depending on him. He needs to marry for money—meanwhile Emmie offers to help him find a bride. What could possibly go wrong, right?
Emmie completely stole the show for me. She’s sharp, kind, and just emotionally layered in a way that makes you feel for her. Simon had to earn his way back into my good graces, but watching him show up for his siblings and try to rebuild? Yeah, it worked. The sibling dynamic was adorable—Fia was a little ball of sunshine, Lottie had main character energy, and Will? Quiet, observant, and lowkey the most emotionally intelligent one in the house.
Also can we talk about the side characters? Ben, Aster, and Thomas—spin-offs please. Aunt Bean was unhinged in the best way, and her “life lessons” nearly took me out.
This story had everything I love in a historical romance: accidental proximity, witty chaos, a slow-burn mess of feelings, and characters you want to hug and yell at in equal measure. It was my first time reading this author, but I’m already stalking the backlist because this absolutely won me over.
Thank you to NetGalley & Thomas Nelson Fiction for the ARC!
When the gentleman is in distress and the damsel decides to help, you just know it’s going to be good ✨And It was the absolute sweetest read I picked up in June!
The story follows Emmeline, a secretly successful author, and Simon, the charming man who once broke her heart as they team up to save his estate and reputation without catching feelings again.
-💌- But spoiler alert: feelings are caught or rather they never disappeared in the first place 👀
This book was my first ever Regency-era read, and I honestly didn’t expect to love it this much 😍 Emmeline is smart, independent, and secretly a successful author (which I loved), and Simon is the charming-but-flawed man who suddenly needs her help.
There’s banter, there’s tension, there’s a frog named Blast, and subtle nods to Sense and Sensibility which I adored 🩷
It’s a no-spice, feel-good romance that had me grinning more than once. I gave it 5 stars without even thinking about it. It just made me happy. And now I want more books like this in my life 🥹✨🩷

An absolutely delightful romp through historical romance with a twist. The way I was rooting for these two idiots the entire time because neither had sense or sensibility and I ATE IT UP. Give me more more more. Perfect summer read. 10/10
Sense and Suitability by Pepper Basham is outstanding. Utterly outstanding! I was hooked from page one, and I refused to put this book down. Seriously, I would take it with me everywhere so my reading would be as little interrupted as possible. I read this amazing story all in one day. Yes, it is that good. I know I say this after every Basham read, but this may be her best novel yet. Emme and Simon are superb characters. They both equally captured my heart and I wanted so desperately to make everything better for them. I wanted their happily ever after so badly. Simon’s siblings are one of the best captures of children on the page. I simply loved these kids. They add a perfect layer of heart and depth to the story. Truly, I wanted to reach into the narrative and hug these babies so much!!! In addition to her gift of creating realistic, relatable, and endearing characters, Basham is also the QUEEN of crafting palpable romantic tension and that beautifully painful ache in a reader’s heart produced when two characters are supposed to be together — like there really isn’t any other option — but Society tells them they can’t be together, so they do everything in their power to obey Society. Gosh, I hate Society! Whatever the fancy word is for this thing that Basham does to my heart, she deserves every award on the planet for creating it in her books. I love stories that allow me to laugh out loud one minute and hide-cry in the corner of my living room the next. Sense and Suitability did this to me in spades. It was glorious. This book is glorious!!!
I know this review doesn’t really tell you much, but that is because I don’t dare spoil even one second of this amazing story. Seriously, if you love exquisitely written Regency Romances that make you feel the same way you felt reading Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility or Mansfield Park, then you need to order a copy of Sense and Suitability NOW. You will not want to miss out on this story. This is a story that will stick with the reader well after the final page has turned.

What I enjoy most about this author's books is my ability to get lost in her literary worlds. This author has written across different genres and each one are written so well I can immerse myself in that time, place, and location. There were many passages I highlighted that made me laugh. I thougth Aunt Bean was a hoot! The story was definetly romantic and poetic at times and at the right moments. I loved the author's parallel to the Jane Austen story. To me the ending had a sweet and grand but not over the top gesture. It was a great way to end the story. Overall, I loved the story, characters, dialogue and flow.
If you know me, then you know that Historical Romance is a guilty pleasure of mine. I usually read 4 books at a time and HR is always among them, ALWAYS, so saying this is now one of my more favorite HR is high praise. This book was written so well, the longing, the intensity of thier connection, how they actually fall in love with each other's character rather than just looks. It's just, chefs kiss, beautiful.
The characters are all so diverse, and so interesting. I loved how smart, caring and witty Emme is, how fearlessly herself she is. I loved Simon and his relationship with his siblings, he's so torturiously honest, struggling to be so many things for so many people without losing the essence of who he is. Thomas is so delectable, such a great person and dependable friend. I could just feel how much he cared for Emme, and thier banter was just so funny. Aunt Bean. Oh man, bless her heart, she's so misguided and yet her lessons on how to catch a husband were just hilarious. Little FIA, was just so utterly adorable I loved her. Charlotte and her inquisitive mind. Aunt Agatha just wanting the best for her family. All if them I loved all the characters.
I just loved the whole book in general. I perfer smut in my historical romances, and though there wasn't any in this one, I still loved every minute of it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this Regency romance from Pepper Basham and would proudly place it on a shelf with other masters of the time period including the great Jane Austen! I thought this had such a similar feel to Austen while also resounding with Basham's unique voice, wit, and charm. I hope for many more of this type of book from Basham, with well-developed and lovable characters of all ages, (including some you'll love to hate!) I enjoyed reading about life as a female author in this era, and I really appreciated the theme of forgiveness that grounded the book.

Oh how I loved this!! I thought the storyline was wonderful and the characters were endearing, yet complex. This was a delightful historical romance.
What a fantastic book! All the references to Jane Austin were great and the story was done so well. The writing was fantastic. The story was fantastic. The plot was interesting and there was the question of how things were ACTUALLY going to work out in the back of my mind the entire time. I loved the main characters and their families. I was invested in everything that happened. I didn’t expect to enjoy this book as much as I did! This is a book I will definitely read again.

This is a delightful Regency romance. Not really an enemies-to-lovers romcom, rather a forbidden love. The reference to Jane Austen's novel works quite well, and even the book in subject makes a cameo in the story.
Emmeline and Simon are exactly the characters one would expect in a Regency book, and the cast is complete with the playful and cheeky siblings as well as the straitlaced and meddlesome aunts.
Samantha F, Librarian
Emmeline Lockhart’s heart fluttered for Simon Reeves and the promise of a marriage proposal that night.
But she should’ve know better; he left her to deal with a broken heart, a slightly tarnished reputation and her aunt’s help to secure Emmy a good match for marriage this season.
Now Simon is the Viscount of Ravenscross, his responsibilities, expectations and, if rumor held true, his debts has grown exponentially, and his only solution is to find a good bride.
This is a second chance, friends to lovers romance settled in 18th century England’s, that starts a little bit slow paced but then you can’t put it down. Living up to its name, the characters in this book are very Jane Austen-esque and you can see a bunch of parallels between this book and “Sense and Sensibility”.
The plot moves quickly, but the characters are well developed and refreshing, showing their complexities and make you engage with their dynamic, through a vibrant banter, witty and swoony heartfelt romance that also explores self-discovery and powerful siblings bonds.
If you love Bridgerton but don’t want the spice, you’ll love this book!!

Pepper Basham’s foray into regency romance is completely perfect!! With her exquisite sense of humor and proclivity for mischief with main characters, I was delighted and entertained from start to finish. Emmeline and Simon are so perfectly suited and even when they know they can’t be together, their integrity and loyalty are commendable. Thank goodness love always wins! Their journey to happily ever after is filled with poignancy, humor, romance, and all the emotions that kept me fully engaged. Be still my heart – I’m OBSESSED with this book! Pepper, you were born for this! Your first regency novel and I just knew you’d knock it out of the park.
“Taking a woman’s book recommendation to heart might be one of the most romantic things in all the world.”
Can I get an AMEN for that amazing quote!? Lol Simon and Emme, a second chance romance for the ages. So many incredible references to Jane Austen’s novels in this one. Emme and Simon had courted and at the moment of expecting a proposal, Simon instead disappears without an explanation. Emme emotionally moves on and works tirelessly as a novelist. Incognito of course, as a female author was completely unacceptable during this time. She’s quite successful and accepts the fact that although she may be on the fast track to becoming a spinster, she’ll at least be able to support herself through writing.
Simon comes back into the picture and his charm is nearly impossible to resist. There are serious reasons as to why Simon pulled a disappearing act on Emme back in the day, but that doesn’t excuse him from having done so without an apology and explanation. Their chemistry is just as intense as it had been. Problem being Simon’s finances are truly struggling. He has his secrets and Emme has hers. You will love the way this story unfolds. Both characters are incredibly likeable. You’ll be rooting for them right from the start.
I dare say that Simon and Emme did more for me than Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. That statement alone should make you curious enough to pick up this book. Beautiful elements of faith and forgiveness woven throughout. A story that concentrates on the heart’s wants and needs over bank accounts or social status.

Emmeline is entering her third social season after two failed seasons in the past. She once liked Simon but then he left without saying anything. Now she is just trying to make it through another season.
Simon left Emmeline without saying anything because of some family problems that made the whole family fall apart. Now after a year, he is back in town and looking to marry. He needs a wife and money to keep his family together.
Emmeline helps Simon with looking for a wife for him. But can they spend all this time together without old feelings and desire coming up?
This is the second book I’ve read by Pepper Basham, and once again I’m not disappointed. I absolutely love how she writes and tells stories. There was never a dull moment in the story and it kept me engaged the whole time.
I loved the characters and how to get to know each other again. They resolved the struggles from the past and grew together again. The characters developed nicely.
I also listened to this book as an audiobook. The production was really nice and clear. The narrators were really good and I loved the different accents they did.
Overall this was a very funny and sweet regency romance. I recommend this read to everyone!

Love, love, love this! Loved the MFC Emme. Very comfortable with her life, including her 'secret' life that would have society shunning her. Loved the MMC Simon. Life is going along beautifully, then WHAM! His life gets a major turn around. Will he decide on what is societally expected of him or will he choose - Emme? Will her 'secret' life be accepted by Simon or will he shun her too? Absolutely love Simon's younger siblings. Spunk and curiosity and wit galore. Pepper Basham hit a home run with "Sense and Suitability".

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Made me feel like I went back in time. I loved the all the characters and the bonds formed. I think my favorite character might be blasted though. I loved seeing the main characters heart to help others and the relationship that formed from her being so vulnerable even after being hurt. I loved that i could enjoy a beautiful story without all the spice. I'll definitely be adding this author to my reading list!

This author is quickly becoming one of my absolute favorites. I’ve found myself completely drawn in by her unique writing style—filled with wit, emotion, and just the right amount of drama. Every book I’ve read by her so far has been a delight, and this one is no exception. From the very first page, I was hooked.
If you're a fan of Regency-era Christian romance, this story is a must-read. The setting is rich with period detail, and the characters feel so real and multi-dimensional that you can't help but become emotionally invested in their journeys. I found myself falling in love with so many of the characters, even while strongly disliking a few others—which, in my opinion, is a sign of great storytelling.
Emmeline and Simon completely stole my heart. Both of them have such strong, distinct personalities that clash and complement in the best ways. Their journey is not an easy one, and the challenges they face seem almost insurmountable at times. But through it all, you find yourself rooting for them, hoping that love, faith, and perseverance will be enough to carry them through.
There are moments of heartache, laughter, suspense, and tenderness throughout the book. It’s beautifully written and thoughtfully paced, with deeper themes of redemption, forgiveness, and trust woven into the romantic plot. I didn’t want to put it down—and now that I’ve finished, I can’t stop thinking about the story and characters.
This one will definitely stay on my shelf to be reread, and I can’t wait to see what this author writes next. Highly recommend!

ARC/ ALC REVIEW
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
To say that Pepper Basham’s latest novel, Sense and Suitability, is outside my usual read would be an understatement. While regency romances have had a huge resurgence in the book community (thanks in large part to Bridgerton), they are commonly filled with explicit content. Being that I read primarily clean/ closed door books, it made consuming modern versions of this sub-genre virtually impossible (at least to my knowledge).
Upon learning that Pepper Basham (one of my favorite clean/ contemporary authors) was penning her first regency novel, I knew I had to give it a try. I am so glad that I did. She not only made me fall in love with her story, but reminded me how much I love this time period. As a result, I pray she will put out more books like this!
I had the pleasure of consuming this book in multiple medias (e-book/ audiobook). While I found both options to be highly enjoyable, I truly feel this story needs to be heard. Fiona Hardingham and Christopher Ashman, the voice actors who narrated the story did a fantastic job. Just getting to hear their accents made this story come to life.
Read this book for:
-Dual POVs
-Second Chance Romance
-Enemies-to-more
-Slow Burn
-Found Family
-Lovable Side Characters
-FMC with a secret (female empowerment)
Favorite Quote: “Follow your heart, not your hurt.”

The journey is heartwrenching but so worth taking it. Simon's siblings were such a delight and constantly made me chuckle! Who wouldn't fall in love with these two lovebirds?! You don't want to miss out on this one. So highly recommend!
Regency Beauty!
🌷Amazing from beginning to end! The way each character is written is perfect. This book has succeeded in making me love, laugh, and get angry all in one.
🌷Her overall story is captivating and every character is memorable! I can't say enough about the beauty of this book.
🌷It is a must read! Also no language and no spice and trust me it does not need it.
I loved it! I loved Emme and Simon, they were so good together. I loved that they fought for each other, even though the odds were stacked against them.
I also adored all the side characters, the children especially. They were adorable, and clever, and just so sweet.
Overall, a super enjoyable, fun read.

Pepper Basham has written another favorite for book lovers. “Sense and Suitability” is the book you need to read, even though you didn’t know you needed it! This book is full of all the Jane Austen feels, coupled with a more current storytelling feeling. Pepper Basham brings readers another lovely set of characters that make me want to get to know these people! The wit and seriousness is perfectly balanced, and the plot moves along so well. Honestly, I adored this book! Emme is just the most likeable woman, and she shows such personal character growth. I need to be more like Emme, with her empathy, love, and care for others. Simon is a mystery to the reader at first. One just can’t tell if he should be considered a rogue or a hero. However, I did appreciate the personal growth that Simon also experienced throughout this story. Not to be outdone, the author has included many secondary characters who play highly important roles in this plot. Some of those characters (ahem Aunt Bean and Aunt Aggie!) definitely add the humor (and extra angst) to the plot. I highly recommend this book, I will be reading it again, it has also inspired me to reread some Jane Austen, too!
I love a well written Austen remake and this one is perfect. I loved that it wasn’t a direct rewrite but more an homage to s and s. It also had Easter eggs for other Austen stories and the characters we all know and love were embodied in their story in an endearing manner. This story had everything a regency romance needs to be entertaining and most importantly had a hero that Austen would have approved of.
Pepper Basham does it again! Her story telling wraps around you pulling you into another character another world. Sense and Suitability embodies the regency era bringing back the style of Ms Austen with its wit, honor and social classes. The swoony romance and family dynamics are my favorite parts. You can never go wrong with a Basham novel. So thankful to netgalley for an early copy my opinions are my own.
as someone who loves the spicier side of romance, i was fully expecting this one to be a bit underwhelming but BOY was i WRONG. this was so cute and delightful and felt like i was floating through the story in the best way. i loved!!!!

This book was a delight!! My favorite Jane Austen story is Sense and Sensibility so a whole book incorporating it and putting a spin on it was so fun. I loved Emme and Simon and their love/longing for each other was so palpable! I had a copy of the ebook and the audio and went back and forth, but I thoroughly enjoyed Basham’s writing style and also really enjoyed the audio—both the FMC and MMC voices were great.
This regency includes so many great elements—independent FMC, family relationships, MMC who falls completely head over heels, pining, longing, stolen glances, and becoming the hero of your own story.
This is totally a book I would come back to again.

Wow! Just wow!
This 1818 Regency-era romance is so well-written. It's a love story of heartbreak due to circumstances and society's expectations, along with growing pains and the antics of children, which always enhance a storyline. Emme and Simon have much to overcome, and each has so much depth of character.
QUOTABLE:
☆"How on earth was she going to survive an entire season with the possibility of seeing Simon Reeves at any moment?"
☆"Two thoughts wove through her mind at the same time. First, this was a thoroughly mortifying way to die. Second, but what a marvelous scene it would make in a novel."
Very well done.

For those who are looking for a period drama that is a mix of Jane Austen's works and Julia Quinn's Bridgerton series. This book was fantastic! It features realistic characters struggling with real problems that don't just magically solve themselves. There is discussion of redemption and forgiveness, and looking beyond rumors and what you think you may see at the surface. This novel is a great example of the modern feminist themes explored in period romance novels that are currently published, without the spiciness, and perhaps with a little more substance. This is a well-done transition from Basham's previous series.

I love the world of Jane Austen and its romance. So I was so happy when I was accepted for this ARC. And it did not disappoint. It had the perfect blend of everything Jane Austen. From the banter, the social restrictions and etiquette. And most importantly the perfect amount of caring about each other and yearning.
Simon Reeves disappeared two years ago when he was supposed to meet with Emmeline Lockhart or Emme for short. But now he is back. With a title, his estate in ruins and a wild bunch of siblings under his care. But what will happen when they meet again.
I thought the writing style was very good. A perfect mix of pacing, characters and joy. What really stood out to me is that all the secondary characters really had a purpose and were really three dimensional. They really brought to the story with their personalities, wishes and mischief. The main characters were very good as well. They had a lot of depth and I love Simon and Emme's relation and friendship. I think my favourite thing was that they had multiple sides and surprising ways of seeing things or dealing with them.
I really adored this books. It is perfect for fans of Jane Austen or Historical Romance or even fans of Romance. This was my first book by this author, but I will definitely look into reading more. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
"This is Pepper Basham's first foray into the Regency genre and she has done a masterful job of it. The story is lively, with snappy main characters and delightful little side characters ages 5 and 8. Add in an occasional frog and you will wish the book never ended.
There are no swears only 1 time period swear, brief mention of alcohol, and level 1.5 Kisses only. First person, present tense dual POV.
I listened to the audiobook and the dual narration was great and easy to listen to.

Another great story by Pepper Basham!
I love how she always pulls me into wanting to know
More about her characters. . The cover of Sense and Suitability is perfectly charming.
I enjoyed the romance and I always enjoy a story with family dynamics in it. You can never go wrong with a Pepper Basham novel. Thank you to netgalley for an early copy.
Pepper Basham has done it again, bringing her signature humor and swoony romance to the Regency era. Her first foray into Regency is adorable and entertaining from the very first page. Emmeline is immediately relatable and lovable, and I instantly wanted her to find her happily ever after. Simon's dire circumstances make his initial reaction understandable, even while I hated it for Emme. His siblings are absolutely adorable, and I loved every single scene they were in! They definitely stole the show with their sheer cuteness, especially little Sofia.
Of course, Simon and Emme's chemistry is swoon-worthy, and reels in the reader from the very beginning. I loved that Simon tried so hard to figure out how to make sure his siblings were taken care of while still being able to be with Emme. Their HEA is so sweet and poignant.

I love Pepper Basham's writing style and have been enchanted by each book of hers that I have read, so I jumped at the chance to read her first foray into Regency romance, and I'm so glad I did!
Sense and Suitability is witty, romantic, and (as with all of this author's books) chock full of endearing characters. I enjoyed the nods to Jane Austen and her books as well as the parallels that were drawn.
I highly recommend this charming and delightful book!

Fans of Becky St. Amant, Karen Witemeyer, and Jan Turano will absolutely love Pepper Basham's newest regency era romance. The perfect blend of romance, truth found in scripture, and the humor that we have all come to love and expect from Pepper Basham. In this historical fiction rom-com, Pepper Basham brings two characters together, that on paper do not make sense, but God, as the author of their story has an even better plan for them. Readers will love the genuine and complex characters throughout and fans of Jane Austin will love all of her references to Sense and Sensibility. The perfect book to cozy up with on a Saturday afternoon and journey into another time and place.

What a delightful second chance regency read! I give it 5 stars. The main characters went through growth and a lot to see their HEA. The MMC siblings were loveable. Overall it was engaging and witty. (Trigger:grief)

What a good read it was! I believe everyone who love regency historical romance that will make you smile with the sweetness of the characters and the most beautiful slow burn, would thoroughly enjoy this book!
We have Emme, our strong, witted, and sweet heroine. With her failed seasons and hiding her profession as an author of gothic novels, she had to deal with seeing Simon again after he broke her heart. She is determined to not let herself be weak in front of him again.
Simon, our hero, has been through a lot, trying to take care of his siblings, trying to figure out a way of how to fix the messes that his father and cousin left. He needs his match to figure out how to keep everything standing and what better way than a rich bride to pop up, right?
Well, jokes on both of them. This is really such a sweet book. You cannot not love the characters, from the main characters, to the supporting ones, they are all so nice and lovely to read about.
Thank you NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the arc! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

From the first interaction between these characters, I screamed: "OMG, what chemistry they have!" The whole thing about her falling in love with Simon made the story even more juicy. Plus, I loved how the plot and romance unfolded so naturally. Best couple of 2025? Absolutely.

My favorite pepper basham novel to date. A taste of Austen’s world with our plucky heroine Emme (who is an undercover gothic author in her own right) and her cinnamon roll Lord Simon, kept from loving her because of family obligations. Featuring feisty aunts with their own vendettas, runaway pet frogs and more - this one was fun.
My goodness I adored this book! 💐
I was originally expecting a Lady Whistledown type situation, but this is so much better!
In this Austen era historical fiction, Emme is an author who publishs anonymously, like Jane Austen (a double pun for the title), keeping her secret from all but her Rector cousin out of concern of bringing shame to herself and her family.
Slighted in her first season by the man she loves, Emme is not thrilled to find out that two years later he has returned to St. Groves. Society is small, and running into Simon is unavoidable, however Emme isn't expecting to realise that all in not as it seems and the rumours following Simon's hasty departure may have little truth to them. Spurred on by compassion for Simon and his young siblings, who are equally sweet and mischievous, Emme is resolute to help Simon find a suitable bride. If only spending time with him didn't remind her of why she'd loved him in the first place.
Like with Pepper's other works, the characters are Christian and Faith is subtly interwoven or spoken about throughout, with loveable main and side characters. Sense and Suitability is free of language and spice, and is perfect for any fan of Austen, historical fiction or romance.
Thankyou to @netgalley and @thomasnelson for an ARC of this book for an honest review.

Sense and Suitability is a well crafted regency era book that had me hooked right from the start. From the first page I wanted, no needed, to read this as I became invested in the lives of Simon and Emme.
One of the things I loved was how well the tension between desires and doing what is right or expected played out. I was torn about how I wanted the story to play out as I read it, even though I was pretty confident there would be a Happily Ever After! I thought the title suited the book really well and loved the nod to Jane Austen.
The lovely side characters of Fia, Lottie, Will and Aster were delightful and rather creative in their schemes and mischief. I loved Blast and all the havoc caused! And cringed through Aunt Bean and her lectures ...
I thoroughly enjoyed this read and wholeheartedly recommend it as a perfect read to escape into for a few hours. I received a complimentary copy of this book thanks to Thomas Nelson Fiction and Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I know I have to stop squealing in utter delight so you can hear yourself think to read my reactions. Pepper Basham did it again, this time as Regency (a tad faith-based; slight mentions of prayer) romance! Oh and, the audiobook eARC I obtained was fantastic! Emmy and Simon are a marvelous "second-chance" couple who discuss the anonymously-published Sense and Sensibility during the course of her trying to help him find a suitable wife so his younger siblings can have a true home and he can use his aunt's allowance to save his crumbling estate since his inherited title came with debts. *takes deep breath and grins* I love the world the dual narrators masterfully painted as we saw (read as listened to) Emmy and Simon rediscover they still care for one another yet are duty-bound to part once her matchmaking for him since she is a country gentleman's daughter with a small dowery.
Meanwhile, Emmy hasn't let anyone, even her family aside from one cousin who handles her business affairs, in on the little secret that she is an authoress who pens Gothic novels (think the literary content of Northanger Abbey); yet, she finds inspiration in Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice and begins a novel more like her lived experiences. Will Simon be the hero in Emmy's own personal love story or will they be parted by societal expectations and family obligations?
"Sense and Suitability" has genuinely been one of the most heartwarming stories I've read in a while. Not only were the characters extremely endearing, but the vast array of human emotions and complexities of love made the story relatable. Pepper Basham used this novel to explore feelings of grief, love, loss, regret, forgiveness, and duty to one's family vs. duty of one's heart. Emmeline Lockhart is a strong-willed yet kind character with a love of reading and writing. She quickly became one of my favorite FMC's this year. I truly hope that Pepper Basham continues her Regency Romance career by writing another story in this series about Emmeline's sister Aster. I highly recommend this story to anyone who has a love for clean Regency Romance and Jane Austen.
This book was everything that I hoped it would be! Some second chance romances are not done well, but this one was done extremely well. I loved that every single character had depth to them and that they all felt like real people. Simon, SWOON, was such a good MMC. I love that he acknowledged his mistakes and worked tirelessly to fix them. The tension in this book was chefs kiss. Give me tension and angst all day every day over smut. I liked that we got more than just stolen glances,- some regency romances are a little too chaste, I love a good kiss in the book!
I loved the pond scene and all of his siblings- actually all the siblings in the book were a lot of fun. I definitely want to read any other regency books by this author. Overall, 5 stars.
Thank you Thomas Nelson Fiction and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this.
Oh my stars! I can’t express how sweet and lovely this new regency romance from Pepper is! Even more wonderful than I expected.
Just when Emmeline thinks her seems to be falling into place perfectly it falls apart terribly. Expecting a proposal from the dashing and attentive Simon Reeves, her hopes are dashed when he leaves her without so much as a by-your-leave. Heartbroken and with little prospects, she immerses herself in her secret life of writing and publishing novels.
Simon had every intention of proposing to Emmeline until his life changed in the blink of an eye. Left with crippling debt and the care of his family, he wouldn’t shackle Emmeline to a life of hardship. But when their paths cross again unexpectedly, the flame that had been banked soon sparks to life. He can’t deny his adoration and esteem, yet marriage must be financially advantageous and that is not a possibility with Emmeline.
Emmeline is shocked and angered to see Simon again. But when more information comes to light about his abrupt departure from her life she takes it upon herself to find him a bride while helping him care for his siblings. Setting aside her hurt and embarrassment, she takes on the role of friend, teacher, confidant, and matchmaker.
This was such an endearing and heartfelt story. Essentially lovers to enemies to friends, second chance, and hidden identity this book was full of everything I love. Side characters that steal the show, longing and slow burn, selflessness, and forgiveness. It’s wonderful from the first page to the last. .
Thank you NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.

Emme and Simon should have been engaged by now, but some dire circumstances in his family has prevented that. Simon has been thrust into a position he never imagined at a young age and the pressure is on with a crumbling mansion and out of control younger siblings. Propriety is everything in the Regency era and pleasing the ton is of utmost importance and if word got out about Emme’s scandalous career, she would be ruined. This is Pepper Basham’s first foray into the Regency era, and I think she’s killing it! It’s low spice, with lots of amusing antics by Simon’s younger siblings and some surprising concessions that Emme makes. I loved Emme’s solution to the problem, so read on and enjoy the antics of a bygone era.
Pepper Basham is a very versatile novelist who writes her beloved historical Appalachian stories, rom coms, historical, contemporary romance and now Regency era. Hope Between the Pages and The Mistletoe Countess are among my favorites, but she has a generous backlist to recommend.

I had a wonderful time reading this book.
A Regency rom-com that I highly recommend!
This is the first time I've read this author, and I loved it.
I laughed so much with this story; there are many funny moments, but this story isn't just humor; there's emotion, depth of feeling, redemption, forgiveness, and a beautiful arc for the main characters.
The secondary characters also contribute well to the story.
I loved Emme and her witty and intelligent sense of humor. Her big heart and kindness.
I loved Simon and his courageous efforts for his family.
When I finished reading this book, I had a big smile on my face.
Emmeline Lockhart is starting her third season when she encounters the man who broke her heart two years ago.
She is determined to avoid him and hate him for all the suffering he caused her without giving any explanation. But seeing him as an enemy is not as easy as she thought it would be.
Simon Reeves' life took a complete turn two years ago when he inherited a title, a mountain of debt, and a dilapidated property.
Now he must do whatever it takes to save his home and family from ruin, and that means marrying an heiress.
There's just one problem: the only woman he can imagine as his wife is Emmeline, who doesn't fit his needs.
Although these two tragic lovers make an effort to stay away from each other and remain just friends, the connection and love that once united them is not easily broken.
With secret and scandalous professions, unsupervised young children, and other calamities, will Emme and Simon be able to find a future together?
You will find:
💘 Dual POV
💘 Love vs. Duty
💘 Accidental encounters
💘 Second chance at love
💘 Secret writer
💘 Adorable and wild children
💘 Enraged chickens
💘 Longing and laughter
This book will be released on October 14.

Pepper Basham did it again! Every time I pick up one of her books, I know I’m in for witty banter, laugh-out-loud moments, and characters who completely steal my heart. Sense and Suitability was no exception.
The premise hooked me right away: Emmeline, secretly a successful (and anonymous) author, wants nothing to do with marriage after being burned by Simon Reeves. Until he comes crashing back into her life, desperate to restore his family’s ruined estate and reputation. Emmeline agrees to help him find a “suitable” bride, but of course, their lingering chemistry complicates everything.
I loved how the author balanced humor with heart. The banter between Emmeline and Simon was top tier—sharp, playful, and so full of tension that I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. Emmeline as a strong, independent heroine who refuses to settle was perfection, and Simon’s journey from a careless charmer to a man of sincerity and regret felt so satisfying.
This book had me grinning one minute, swooning the next, and fully invested in their story from beginning to end. The romance was messy, inconvenient, and utterly delightful—the exact kind of love story Emmeline herself might have written.
Sense and Suitability by Pepper Basham is a charming modern Austen retelling that beautifully blends romance, humor, and family bonds. With characters who leap off the page and a storyline that balances heart-tugging emotions with laugh-out-loud moments, this book is the kind of cozy, swoony read you don’t want to put down.

Sense and Suitability by Pepper Basham
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Sense and Suitability by Pepper Basham was an absolute delight! This Regency romance had everything I love—rich characters, a heartfelt storyline, laugh-out-loud moments, and a satisfying happily-ever-after.
The story follows Simon, a man whose life is turned upside down after a series of family tragedies leaves him as Viscount and guardian of his siblings. Because of his new responsibilities, he breaks off his intended marriage to Emmaline—the woman he deeply loved. Two years later, their paths cross again. Simon is under pressure to find a wealthy wife, while Emmaline, still carrying a tender heart, shows incredible grace, support, and forgiveness toward him.
Emmaline herself was such a joy to follow. She’s secretly an author—a dangerous pursuit in the Regency era for a woman, especially one connected to Simon, who already faces scandal in the wake of his family’s troubles. This extra layer of tension added so much depth and made me root for her even more.
The writing was beautifully paced, the characters felt relatable and real, and the late summer/early fall setting created the perfect cozy Regency atmosphere. I especially appreciated the Christian elements woven naturally into the story—Pepper Basham did a wonderful job showcasing faith, love, and redemption.
This book made me laugh, swoon, and smile all the way to the sweet ending. I truly enjoyed every moment.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the ARC in exchange for my honest review—all opinions are my own.
⚠️ Content/Trigger Warnings:
• Death of Mothers from both main characters
• Death of MMC Father and other family members
• MMC has a sister that ran away and does not speak to the family anymore
*nothing death-wise is graphic in this book, nor explained in explicit detail. You see some grief regarding the loss of parents.
In this Regency era setting, Emmeline is struggling in the social seasons, having been left high and dry by Simon. While her family still has hope, Emmeline wishes to remain single and focus on her anonymous author side gig. Meanwhile, Simon's family money is gone, and he has no way to fix up his crumbling estate or reign in his younger siblings. Emmeline agrees to help him find a suitable match and keep up his public persona, but she does register that he is sincere in his apologies regarding his actions toward her - and she also registers that there is still chemistry between them.
This was such a delightful read. Both Emmeline and Simon were written well, as genuinely good people, and the writing between the characters had a lot of zest to it. There are also a variety of side characters that were equally as endearing. Overall, if you're looking for a funny book with sweet moments, and one set within the Regency era, this is a great choice for you.

Loved this book! Sense and Suitability is a CLEAN regency romance. The couple gets a second chance after a breakup that took them both by surprise a few years ago. Filled with overbearing family members (with their true motives revealed, which I love!), adorable siblings, and a secret occupation by the female main character, this book was such a fun read.
The romance is kept to kissing only. And while there is plenty of scandal involved, none of it is sexual in nature. I would recommend this to teenagers and older who are looking for a delightly regency romance to enjoy. I was given the opportunity by the publisher and NetGalley to read an advance copy of this book. A review was not required.
I LOVED this clean regency romance! It had quick wit, and I fell in love with the characters. The banter was top notch - Kept me engaged the whole time. I devoured it!
Emmeline Lockheart has had a difficult time getting beyond her first failed season in London. Simon Reeves seemed like her perfect match until he disappears with only an ambiguous apology written on a calling card. What Emme doesn’t know is that Simon was unexpectedly thrown into the role of the head of the family and trying to save his family’s estate.
The story was delightful, and it was so gratifying to see Emme and Simon have a second chance at a HEA. I loved how Simon and Emme discuss Sense and Sensibility. If I didn’t know better, I would think that Emme and Simon were real people instead of characters themselves that are in a book. This speaks to the gifted writing that it takes to make characters come alive as they did in this story.
There are so many thing to love in this book, but here are some of them:
second chances
humor
writer
Aunt Bean, Aunt Agatha
feral children
husband catching lessons
chicken thievery
pond rescue
Blast-It-All
Miss Hemston
language of flowers
forgiveness
For this being Ms. Basham’s first book written in the Regency era, I say, “Well done!” I wholeheartedly recommend this book for readers of all ages. You’ll not only love Emme and Simon but also the secondary characters; the family and friends add lightheartedness and wisdom to the story. There is also one particular antagonist that was so well written that I just wanted to throw my book across the room. (However, I didn’t.) I truly would love to see this story made into a movie. I eagerly await the next book in the series.

Wow what a beautiful story which had me hooked from start to finish. The references to Jane Austen, a favourite author and the book Sense and Sensibility was wonderfully written and at times it felt like the stories were intertwined. Emme and Simon had to weather many storms to get their happily ever after which was often difficult in that time period. But seeing the development of their characters the sharing of their struggles showed that love really does conqur all. The antics of Simons siblings reminded me of antics in my own childhood which pulled me further into the story and that Emme had a profession that is dear to me also added another layer of depth. A wonderful story beautifully written would love to see more that reference Jane Austens work so well. Thank you to NetGalley and Pepper Basham for an advanced reader copy all thoughts are my own.

Absolutely delightful!! This first foray into Regency, by author Pepper Basham is extraordinary! I was captivated from the first page to the last in this highly entertaining nod to Sense and Sensibility.
Witty, romantic, and self-sacrificing, the hero and the heroine are trying to do the right thing, even if it means no foreseeable future for them. Emmeline Lockhart is willing to sacrifice her future with Simon Reeves for his benefit, as he is saddled with a new title, a debt ridden estate, (adorable) siblings to take care of and an aunt to please. You don't want to miss this charming story. I could not put it down, and I cannot wait for the next story in this series.
Thank you to Thomas Nelson and Net Galley for allowing me to read an early copy. All opinions are my own. This is a book I want for my keeper shelf.
This was everything I could want in a regency book.
There were meddling family members, dancing at balls, gossiping town members, and, of course, love across class lines.
I loved watching Emmeline and Simon work through their history (I love a second-chance romance), and tackle their personal problems together along with their families.
If you love sweet romance, regency era books, or Jane Austen inspired stories, you HAVE to read this book!

I've admired Pepper Basham's writing style, wit and the wide range of emotions evoked from her stories. As a truly gifted author, her words stir vivid imagery while robust characters charm readers with descriptions and dialogue so realistic, readers cheer for the good guys and hope that right triumphs over wrong. This book, which I believe is her best yet, is no exception. Have tissues nearby and prepare for a side-eye or two when you suddenly laugh in public.

It's been a long while since I enjoyed a Regency Romance as much as I loved Pepper Basham's newest novel, Sense and Suitability. I loved how elements of ALL of my favorite Jane Austen novels found their way into this book, so it felt familiar while also being completely original. I was prepared to hate Simon (see...prejudice, right there) after the first two chapters, but then I found that I just...couldn't. He's one of my favorite male main characters that I've read this year, and he's going to be hard to top for Best Book Boyfriend of 2025.
I was blessed to read an early copy thanks to the Publisher and NetGalley. All opinions are purely my own, and I was not required to give a positive review.

I was thrilled to receive an ARC of Pepper's latest book. When I heard she was writing a Regency novel and it had Jane Austen vibes, I was all in! This was such a delightful story full of compelling characters, witty banter, and beautiful romance.
Pepper has quickly become one of my favorite auto-read authors. I love her witty storytelling and heartfelt stories. Pepper's characteristic charm and wit are on full display in this lovely second chance romance.
I loved Emme's character and admired her confidence and kindness. She just exudes light and genuine concern even after experiencing grief and heartbreak. I loved seeing her connect with SImon's younger siblings and how easily she befriends them. Her relationships with her cousin and sister were also lovely. I could see how genuinely they care for each other. Her clandestine role as an authoress was so fun! I loved how she writes from her heart and experiences, especially in her newest novel. And her wit and humor were so much fun. I loved her witty replies to Aunt Bean's husband catching lessons and her clever retorts to Simon throughout the novel. Certainly, her relationship with Simon is central to the story and I loved seeing how perfectly suited they are together.
Simon has more depth and devotion than I expected and I loved seeing him defend the people he loves most. He has also experienced harrowing difficulties with the untimely deaths of his father and cousin leaving him with a title, mounds of debt, and a crumbling family. He doesn't always know what to do and he makes some big mistakes (like with Emme 2 years prior) but he is learning and trying to make things right. I loved seeing him connect with his younger siblings and really get to know them. And I loved how he finally realizes that love is more important than money. The ways he fights for Emme and their future together were so beautiful!
The love story is witty, charming, and so beautiful! I think Jane Austen herself would be impressed by subtlety and depth of their love. And I love the references to Sense and Sensibility throughout the book! Simon and Emme are reunited after a courtship that almost ended in a proposal years ago. But everything is different now. Or so it would seem. I loved how easily they fall back into their friendship and how they tease each other. I loved how Emme brings light and laughter back into Simon's family and how she fits so well with them. I love the moment Simon realizes that money is not happiness and love is worth fighting for. And wow do they have some truly swoony kisses! The ending is absolutely beautiful. I love how it all comes together and how beautiful their happily ever after finally becomes.
Pepper just announced the next book in the series and I can't wait to read more in this world!!
Pepper Basham has done it again with another delightful story that kept me turning pages. I stayed up way too late reading this one. Sense and Suitability delivers everything I've come to love about her writing.
The characters really made this book shine. Those two aunts were hilarious and genuinely scary at the same time. I never knew what to expect from them. Cousin Thomas was absolutely formidable, and I loved how Basham showed the strong bonds between the siblings. You could feel how their shared struggles brought them closer together.
The romance felt real and satisfying. Both the hero and heroine were well-developed characters who genuinely cared about each other and the people around them. Their selflessness drove the story forward and made me root for them from the start. These two earned their happy ending.
Basham knows how to balance a good plot with solid character development. The pacing kept me engaged without feeling rushed, and I appreciated how every character served a purpose in the story. The writing itself is polished and engaging.
If you're a fan of Pepper Basham's previous work, this one won't disappoint. If you're new to her books, this is a great place to start discovering what makes her stories so consistently enjoyable.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to Pepper Basham, Thomas Nelson, and NetGalley for the ALC! I was accepted for the ebook months ago, but can never resist a wholesome, well-done audiobook. :) I always appreciate dual-POV romances, and it becomes evermore real when the characters are so beautifully portrayed by voice actors who do their job well.
I loved this story so much! I used to think that I didn't like historical fiction/romance very much(I thought they were boring), but Pepper Basham is proving to me that I've simply not read the RIGHT historical romances. This is only my third book from Basham, but she is very quickly becoming one of my auto-read/auto-buy authors. The wit of the characters, the internal dilemmas, and the gripping romance had me hooked from the very start.
I have long been a sucker for second-chance romance, and I LOVED Emmeline and Simon's desperation surrounding their own second chance at love, paired with the well-loved forbidden romance trope. I can't recall too many of the details as I finished this a couple weeks ago(silly me procrastinating sitting down and writing my review), but this book was simply delightful and I cannot wait to read more from one of my new favorite authors.
5⭐️ Another fabulous book from @pepperbasham! This is the perfect Bridgerton vibe to help us through the long wait for the new season. If you love Bridgerton but want a no spice story, look no further. You can never go wrong with her characters. One of the things I always love in her books is the side characters. They are always just as entertaining to read about. 5⭐️ narration by Fiona Hardingham and Christopher Ashman. I loved these two for Em and Simon. They reeled me into these characters lives from the very start. The narrations of the kids were so good. So many good chuckle moments.
Emmeline has two failed seasons under her belt. Honestly, she hopes they continue to fail. Emme hasn’t wanted anyone since the man she thought would propose never showed up. She has a plan though. Her writing dream has become a reality with three novels published. Even though Emme has found success writing, she must keep it a secret to prevent further scandal.
Simon knows a bit about scandal in his family. Now Lord Ravenscross, he must try to salvage what little good reputation his family has. The money is running out and Simon must marry soon and well. But there’s one person he ever considered marrying, and he left her the night he meant to propose.
When the season begins, Emme and Simon will come face to face again. Will their spark still be there? Will Emme be able to forgive Simon? Will Simon choose love or money?
Thank you to @netgalley @thomasnelson and @pepperbasham for the advance reader and listener copies. Sense and Suitability will be available October 14th!

I loved this story so much! The book was so sweet and funny and I adored all the characters. Emme was such a gentle, supportive FMC and I really liked her. I loved seeing her interactions with everyone, especially her relationship with Thomas and her family. I was rooting for her and Simon the whole time and am so happy with how this ended. Simon was a solid MC too and I appreciated his devotion to his family and Emme. Their romance was a super slow burn but it was worth the wait. The tropes in this were so good and I really enjoyed the book overall!
Read this if you like regency era slow burns, single guardian, and second chance romances.

🧁📚A sweet regency romance📚🧁
Sense and Suitability by Pepper Basham is a sweet historical romance. Set in Regency England, it is a cute and cozy second chance romance between an unconventional (yet reasonably proper) gentleman’s daughter and a sweet but struggling Viscount. He needs a wealthy wife to save his crumbling estate and support his young siblings and she needs to get over him… but first she’s going to save him.
As far as spice goes this book is a cupcake— super sweet but definitely follows regency social rules (though there is a scandalous kiss or two!)
I really enjoyed reading this book, it was funny and sweet. The main characters were easy to route for and so hopeless over each other. If you’re looking for something light and cute— this might be the book for you!

It is rare that I finish a book by a new to me author and then immediately order another book by that author because I loved it so much. All this to say I have a few
more Pepper Basham books headed my way.
What an absolute delight of a story!!! The writing walked the delicate balance of an Austen homage and original voice so perfectly. I could hear Basham’s unique voice instead of being a copycat of the inspiration.
Emmeline and Simon are so wonderful, both of them! I was crying at the end because I was so happy. I loved the way their characters grew on their own and together. The side characters, particularly the children, warmed my heart and made me laugh.
The pacing was perfection, moving along smoothly. The romance sweet and gentle. One of my favorite books of the year!
Thank you to Thomas Nelson Fiction for the ARC

A wonderful, touching story filled with emotion and wit! Emmeline is such a giving character. Her heart is amazing. Simon works so hard to save his family. While he feels inadequate, he is also able to learn how to grow and change. The depth and heart of their love story is truly amazing!
Thank you to Uplit Tours and Thomas Nelson for the ARC, ALC, and finished copy of Sense and Suitability by Pepper Basham. All opinions are my own.
I had been wanting to read a book by Pepper Basham for a while because I had heard such good things about her books. I am so glad that I got the opportunity to read Sense and Suitability early because it is such a fun and entertaining book. I will definitely read more from this author in the future.
While I haven’t read Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen yet, it did not take away from my enjoyment of this book at all. The story was entertaining, the romance was swoony, and the cast of characters were so endearing and funny.
I loved the yearning in this book with the back and forth between Simon and Emmeline. They had great romantic chemistry, and I was rooting for them the whole time.
The side characters in this story were such a great addition. I absolutely loved Simon’s siblings, and I found them to be one of my favorite parts of the story. I also enjoyed Emmeline’s relationship with her cousin and how he encouraged her in her writing.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who loves closed door historical romances that are sweet, funny, and just an overall good time.
This book is everything you could hope for in a contemporary rendition of a regency era novel. Readers will benefit from a familiarity with Jane Ausen's Sense and Sensibility, but watching the movie will do the trick if reading the book isn't feasible. It's not necessary but it will certainly help with many of the references. This was a joy to read. I alternated between the e-book and audio book narrated by Fiona Hardingham and Christopher Ashman. The audio narration was excellent. Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for providing e- and audio- arc copies in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Being an avid admirer of Jane Austen's books and having recently started the Emma M. Lion series, reading Sense and Suitability felt like an extension of those worlds. With vivid writing, charming and witty characters, and moments full of humor, it had me enchanted within the first few pages.
Emme is now one of my favorite characters. She is a force of nature, and such a strong character. She had so much wit and charm, and her humor was brilliant. But beyond that she exuded such compassion, kindness, and love towards Simon and his siblings.
Simon endeared himself to me from the start. His determination to turn around the fate of a crumbling estate and ensure his siblings were well cared for showed his true character. Despite the pressure he put on himself, he showed leadership, authority and kindness. He was always toeing the line between his heart and his duty. But when the man picks up and reads Emme's favorite book, which happens to be Sense and Sensibility, and then proceeds to discuss it with her? Well, that just made me swoon.
The chemistry, and yearning between Emme and Simon was palpable. Their road to a happily ever after was full of twists and turns, but well-earned. I absolutely loved the ending, and these characters, so much.
I should also mention a few of the side characters who stole the spotlight a time or two. First, Simon's siblings Will, Charlotte, and Sophia. These kids had to grow up too fast for their own good, but their moments and antics were so fun. Then there was Thomas, Emme's cousin. He had helped, guided, and protected her through all her ideas and heartache.
Overall, I highly recommend Sense and Suitability!! It's utter perfection, with charm, wit, and deeply heartfelt characters.
Thank you to Thomas Nelson, Pepper Basham and NetGalley for the eARC. All opinions expressed are my own.

Obsessed! 5⭐️/5
Pepper Basham + regency romance = perfection
I loved this book! I haven’t read many starcrossed lovers in regency and it just worked with these characters! Man, these characters were put through the ringer 😅
Emme she’s a country gentleman’s daughter and a secret author. She’s brave and unsuspecting. She doesn’t have much to offer as far as wealth to a match but she more than makes up for it with her wit, intelligence, compassion and heart. She was slighted two years ago and is recovering and trying to move forward.
Simon is the new viscount of ravenscross. He inherited after his father and cousin both suddenly died. They left the estate and finances in shambles. He is trying to pick up the pieces and pave a way forward with his family and also his reputation. He must choose between duty and his heart.
This is an epic emotional and jarring story about two people who deeply care for one another; where life, station, and society keep tearing them apart. By the end I was deeply invested in all the characters and their outcomes. The side characters - Thomas, Fia, Will, Lottie, Aster and the meddling aunts were amazing additions to the story. I swooned, got swept away, was so irritated, and absolutely fell in love with this story. Pepper is an amazing writer and an auto buy author for me!

Pepper Basham has brought forth another humorous, engaging, thoughtful novel into the world, this time set in Regency era England. I am relatively familiar with the Regency marriage mart scene so it was easy to slip right into Simon and Emme's lives in St. Groves. I enjoyed the references to Sense and Sensibility throughout the story and loved that Emme was an author making headway into becoming financially independent. Emme's resilience, compassion, tenderness, and wit made her an excellent heroine. Simon was a tortured hero, caught between his sense of duty and responsibility and his heart wanting what society states he cannot have. His humility and kindness really made him stand out as a hero. The banter between all the characters was quite delightful and clever. The expectations set out by Emme's aunt of a young woman seeking matrimony were simply ridiculous and over the top but made for some good fun and laughs.
If you enjoy charming Regency rom-com, Pepper Basham's newest book will absolutely thrill you. I hope there's another book coming with Emme's younger sister as the heroine!

Two years ago Emme Lockhart’s heart was broken by the Simon Reeves. She knew his status was way above hers, but he had given her reason to believe they had a future together. And then he called the whole thing off, with no explanation. Now Emme’s aunt is forcing her back into the social scene, determined to have Emme married well. And by well she means with good social standing and plenty of money, love plays no part in her matchmaking. Things become complicated for Emme when Simon returns to the area. Just being near him is still difficult. Yet when she finds out his family’s estate is in trouble, she wants to help him. Even if that means helping him find a bride who is not her.
A few of my favorite things…
The fact that Emme is an author, even though that was scandalous for women back then
The Jane Austen references and overall Austen feel to the story
Sweet, caring and mischievous little kid characters, they always brighten a story!
Aunt Bean. Even though her matchmaking skills were terrible she made me laugh!
Emme and Simon’s caring and playful friendship
Emme’s sweet relationship with her dad
Simon’s care for his younger siblings
Ballroom social scenes
Know that…
There’s a little bit of kissing, but nothing over the top
The book ends with a newly married couple kissing and stepping into their bedroom. Nothing else is described.
Perfect for…
Any woman looking for a cozy Jane Austen-like read!
Another amazing book from one of my all time favorite authors. This book is full of swoony kisses, delightful characters, chance encounters, and extremely funny banter that will make you laugh out loud. Emmy is such a kind person who is willing to help others even if it means she doesn't get the happily ever after she has dreamed of. Simon is so wonderful with his young siblings and wants to do everything he can to make sure they get the life and happiness he thinks they deserve.

5 stars – Sense and Suitability by Pepper Basham is a must read if you enjoy Regency romance. I absolutely loved this book! The story is a page turner, and the characters are so charming. Emmeline Lockhart has had two failed social seasons but not without a bit of gossip. She met and fell in love with Simon Reeves in season one. But the night he was to propose, he learns of some devastating family news that changes his life circumstances. Two years later, Simon returns looking for a wealthy bride but falls in love with Emme all over again. Unfortunately, Emme does not possess a fortune and is also being forced to find a husband this season. But don’t worry - love will find a way.
This sweet, clean romance is full of wonderful family moments that will have you smiling, and lessons from an aunt that will have you outright laughing. This is my first book by this author, and I look forward to reading more of her work.
A huge thank you to NetGalley, the author and Thomas Nelson Fiction for allowing me to read an ARC. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.

A longtime fan of Pepper Basham’s Freddie and Grace mystery series, I knew I was in for a treat with her newest historical fiction novel, Sense and Suitability. While this book is more down-to-earth (without the fantastical scenarios that the aforementioned hero and heroine cannot seem to escape), it has equally as lovable and memorable characters—that I hope we get to spend more time with in future novels.
Lovers of Jane Austen will appreciate the tidbits of and references to Sense & Sensibility that are peppered throughout Basham’s tale, which tells the story of Emmeline Lockhart and Simon Reeves. This erstwhile couple, who most decidedly do not suit if their former history is anything to go by, must decide once and for all if they belong together or are better off remaining friends.
Readers will not only be drawn in by the witty dialogue and delightful descriptions, but they will also enjoy the novel’s exploration of forgiveness, duty, and sacrificial love. How many of us are willing to do the right thing (what we must) regardless of the cost (or our wants)? But, as Emme and Simon learn, there is always a reason to hope.
Some of my favorite quotes include:
“Think with your head, not your hurt.”
“My mother often said humility was the best soil for wisdom to take root.”
“Reputations are slippery things, often shaped by the tongues that spread them.”
“Why, he wondered, did the deepest lessons always come through the harshest trials?”
“Rescues usually work better with more hands.”
“Every small, sound decision matters.”
Sense and Suitability is not a book I will forget anytime soon—largely due to the endearing characters. I truly do hope that Basham has future stories planned for Emme’s sister, Aster, and the sisters’ cousin, Thomas, with cameo appearances of Simon’s charming siblings.

DELIGHTFUL LOVE STORY
Pepper Basham has a remarkable talent for bringing heartfelt characters to life. In her captivating novel, Sense and Suitability, you'll be instantly drawn in by Emmaline and Simon—their story unfolding from the very first pages with irresistible charm and intrigue. Just as they’re about to be engaged, Simon vanishes without a trace—leaving Emmaline heartbroken and perplexed. He’s her dream man, and his sudden absence leaves her devastated.
Set against the enchanting backdrop of Regency England, Basham introduces a lively world where Emmaline’s aunt is determined to see her and her younger sister find suitable husbands—though her advice is often humorous and downright disastrous! From awkward social outings to foolish matchmaking, the story is filled with delightful moments and sharp wit. Emmaline, a fiercely independent woman and secretly a best-selling author, isn’t worried about marriage—her heart remains with Simon. Unbeknownst to her, Simon is also haunted by love, now burdened by a new title and overwhelming debt after inheriting it due to family tragedies. His hope lies in finding a wealthy wife, one who can rescue him financially.
Basham expertly weaves a heartwarming tale of two star-crossed lovers—their paths crossing again as they navigate societal expectations, personal sacrifices, and the hope of true happiness. Emmaline’s generous spirit and unwavering loyalty shine through, even when it means risking her own happiness. This story celebrates the power of goodness, perseverance, and love overcoming all odds. I wholeheartedly recommend this charming read!

Sense and Suitability is a Regency romance that is a delightful blend of humor, heart, and a touch of mystery, reminiscent of Jane Austen's wit with a modern sensibility. The story follows Emmeline Lockhart, a woman with a scandalous past and an even more scandalous secret. After two failed social seasons, her family insists that the third time will be the charm. However, Emme just wants to survive with her dignity and singleness intact. She thought she'd found her perfect match in Simon Reeves, a charming, handsome man who vanished from her life without a word. Now, Emme has sworn off love, focusing instead on her secret career as a successful author. But fate has other plans. Simon's estate is in disarray, his family fortune lost, and his younger siblings are causing chaos. In desperate need of a wealthy, prestigious bride and a friend, Simon seeks Emme's help. She agrees to assist him in finding a suitable match, keeping things strictly platonic. Yet, the undeniable chemistry between them complicates matters. Basham's writing shines with lively banter and swoony kisses. The characters are well-developed, and the chemistry between Emme and Simon is palpable. The story is filled with moments that will make you smile, laugh, and perhaps even tear up.

Sense and Suitability is a charming Regency romance full of wit, heart, and second chances. Emme and Simon’s chemistry is undeniable in this sweet, slow-burn love story with delightful side characters and Austen-inspired flair. It's definitely a clean historical romance, but it works for this story.

I absolutely loved this book. Emmeline Lockhart and Simon (Lord Ravenscross) are characters that are so loveable, I couldn't help but root for them. I loved how the book references Sense and Sensibility and the author A Lady. I loved that the characters are complex and interesting. I loved the families of each of the characters as well. Even Aunt Bean had her funny moments (not on purpose). This book is a beautiful romance with all the heartache, love, friendship, sacrifice and forgiveness a great love story must have. I HIGHLY recommend it.
Going to actually give the full five stars to this one! Mind you, it’s a slooow burn so make sure you’re ready for that. It also has no spice.
Personally, idc about either of those and I’m just a regency fan and on that, it delivered.
I thought it was cute and funny while being true to original ‘S&S’
A delightful read for historical romance fans

Pepper Basham's first regency is outstanding! This enchanting novel is a delightful nod to Austen's Sense and Sensibility with all of the characteristics I have come to treasure in a Pepper Basham novel. Outstanding storytelling, heartwarming characters, wit and humor. With an authentic faith thread that is woven throughout, not preachy or forced, just a natural element one has come to expect in a Basham novel.
Emme and Simon are a match made in heaven. It was so much fun to read the story of their romance, wondering how the happy ever after would overcome all of the obstacles in their path. Simon inherited an estate that is falling apart, with younger siblings that are needing his love and direction. Emme was truly amazing, willing to forgive past offenses and help find a solution for Simon, even if it means sacrificing her own happiness. Can I just say, Ms. Basham has penned a couple of my favorite romantic scenes EVER.
In addition, I love Simon's siblings. And Aunt Agatha. There are so many laugh out loud moments. And so many heartwarming moments. I absolutely loved the Reeves and Lockhart families and hope visit them again in a future story.

My Thoughts:
This was my first Pepper Basham book and it surely will not be my last! I didn't realize that this was her first Regency book and she totally knocked it out of the park with this book! I enjoyed every second of this book! I was able to receive both an ARC and ALC of this book and could not put it down!
The set up of Emmeline waiting to be engaged and to then be spurned is a compelling start that pulls you right into the story where you feel so much sympathy for our misfortunate FMC who has had two failing season since her failed first relationship. In comes a meddling Aunt whose goal it is to help her find a marriage by the end of the season and cure her of her hopelessness in this regard. Luckily her cousin Thomas helps to balance out the absurdity of his mother's determination.
Then there's Simon who has been facing absolute ruin because of decisions his predecessors made. He's been left to clean up a mess he inherited and has had to make so many sacrifices in order to try and save his family from ruin. He is back after a failed attempt to college his sister who ran away and has neglected his other siblings who are now running a muck trying to deal with the same blows that Simon has been recovering from. Add in a friend Ben who has as much whit and humor as he does wisdom and an Aunt with demands that come along with an allowance that will help save him from ruin and you have the perfect storm.
Emmeline and Simons first reintroduction to one another after two years is absolutely one for the books 🤣 It's all the chaotic emotions reemerge and coming to understand that everything was not as it seemed. These two truly struggle through what it means to be just friends as they try and help support one another.
There's such wonderful banter, absurdity from meddling aunts and wonderful family bonds and friendships in this story. If you love a closed door regency this one is for you. There are many sweet moments as well as moments of reconciliation, forgiveness and growth. This book truly had me in its grips the whole time. It was truly utterly delightful and I hope there will be more to come of these delightful character in Pepper Basham's future books!
There are Sense and Sesabailty spoilers in this book which I've not read that book but didn't feel like I had to know the book to enjoy the references to it (it definitely will enhance your experience if you have read it though)
The audiobook was well done and so enjoyable to listen to! It is Dual narrated with the narrator reading and doing the voice of everyone when it is in each characters respective POV. It was well done and a great listen!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC and ALC of this wonderful book, all thoughts and opinions are my own!

I found myself completely engrossed in this story, enjoying it immensely whether I was reading the text or listening to the audiobook. The portrayal of the enemies-to-lovers trope was absolutely outstanding, and I was particularly captivated by the depth of the character development and the engaging interactions between them. The audiobook narrators played a crucial role in bringing the narrative to vivid life, enhancing the overall reading experience significantly.

I enjoyed reading Sense and Suitability, a charming Jane Austen inspired romantic comedy set in Regency England. Emme is a published gothic romance author who’s hiding her identity to avoid the scandal associated with being a female fiction author.
Two years earlier, Enme’s eligible suitor from her first season abandoned her at the ball on the evening he’d promised to propose. Emme has tried to forget about Simon and she’s dealing the hilarious antics of her matchmaking aunt who’s determined to find Emme a suitable husband.
Simon left Emme behind at the ball when his life took a drastic turn that led to him inheriting the viscount title and lands from his cousin. Simon’s financial situation is challenging and his aunt has a proposed a solution. A suitable marriage would provide the finances to help Simon restore the family estate and provide for his orphaned and wayward younger siblings.
Simon returns to his ancestral home in Emme’s town. They’re drawn to each other, despite their disastrous relationship history and the impossibility of marriage and a future together. A delightful romance unfolds that includes many LOL moments, often involving the schemes of Simon’s younger siblings.
I loved the quirky side characters and how ‘Sense and Sensibility’ novel, being a contemporary romance written by an anonymous author at that time, played an integral role in the story that includes forgiveness themes. I recommend Sense and Suitability to regency romance readers who like second chances and enemies to love romcoms with matchmaking aunts, adorable children, Jane Austen inspired story elements, and relevant faith threads in the story.
Many thanks to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy. All opinions expressed are completely my own.

Basham's latest book, and first foray into Regency England, is a delightful story filled with the whimsy of romance and the heartache of reality with the quaint backdrop of a small English town. Emmy and Simon are heartwarming main characters, and their sacrificial love for each other and their families is particularly inspiring.
Through the intrigues and humorous events, the beauty and strength of healthy, supportive family relationships shines, endearing the supporting cast of characters to the reader as much as Emmy and Simon. The wealth of wisdom, encouragement, humor, and annoyances (all familial relationships are subject to them, even when they're good relationships) provided by their siblings, cousin, and aunts enrich the story, and make me hopeful more stories from St. Groves featuring Aster, Thomas, and Ben at the very least, with cameos from Emmy and Simon, of course.

Simon needs a wealthy wife to put his viscountcy to rights—but he can’t stop thinking about his lost love, squire’s daughter Emmeline. When their undeniable chemistry reawakens, can their impossible love story find a happy ending?
Oh, I loved this! It’s fun and romantic with a found family feel. Even though this is the author’s first Regency romance, the historical details are well done.
Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Pepper Basham’s writing plus Regency romance equals a perfectly delightful read worthy of more than 5 stars! Her sense of humor totally vibes with mine, so her books are must-reads for me. I completely adored Sense and Suitability!
Sense and Suitability’s characters leap off of the page, and some will leap right into your heart. Simon makes the perfect, swoon-worthy hero; he’s charming, handsome, and there’s more to him than meets the eye. I loved his siblings: William, Charlotte, and Fia. Fia really steals the scenes she stars in! This five year old little girl loves to be outdoors finding frogs and bugs, so she’s always a mess! Emme is a strong, independent woman of 20, so she’s in her third season. Of course, a fourth would be unacceptable, so her Aunt Albina descends upon the household to make sure Emme doesn’t end up a spinster! The remaining characters are just as well-developed. Some you love; some you love to despise!
I adored the romantic tension in this sweet, clean (only kisses) second-chance romance. Simon must put duty before love, and Emme, being his “friend,” decides to find him a suitable match. This leads to many humorous moments! One of my favorite moments occurs at the theatre, so be sure to look for that scene as you read! The banter between Simon and Emme is so entertaining because they’re perfectly matched!
I highly recommend Sense and Suitability for its wonderful characters, humor, complicated romance, and happily ever after! It’s a page-turning must-read for fans of the genre.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Pepper Basham has become an instant read for me, and Sense and Suitability did not disappoint. If you love Regency-era books and rom-coms, this is the book for you. It is a nod to Sense and Sensibility, which made it such a joy to read.
Emmeline is such a fun, loving character with a big heart. She is secretly an author of Gothic novels. Which could ruin her if her secret comes out. Simon is the gentleman who got away and disappeared, but has now returned for the social season. Little does society know, but Simon has been left with an estate in shambles, with no money to take care of it. Simon has younger siblings whom he is in charge of now that his parents have died. When Emmeline comes across Simon’s sister stealing chickens (this scene is hilarious), she sees that there might be more to Simon and why he vanished. When Emmeline overhears a conversation, she comes up with a plan to help save the Reeves family.
This second-chance romance was perfect, clean, and a kisses-only romance. Pepper Basham loves to write swoony, worthy kisses, so just a heads up for those who do not prefer detailed swoony kisses.

Oh, this is a good one! It got me at the title and just kept going! The characters are well crafted, the story line well thought out. The side characters are adorable!
I loved the little siblings of the main characters, they were funny, insightful and adorable. I loved their background manipulation of the relationship that was growing. Maybe they need their own story. Hint hint
Emme is a very deep soul, very kind and forgiving. Simon had a lot to learn and his growth was good to see.

i adored this book and just couldn't put it down. i didn't want to leave its warm and lightened glow until id soaked it all in. what a joy to find books like this. arent we just so lucky?
Simon was meant to be her match. or so Emme thought. that is until he vanished leaving just a note.what happened? they were such good friends who then fell in love. it was all so right. until it wasn't. but now hes back and is in trouble. Emme doesn't want a man. not now. not after so much failure. and after all she has her own success in many ways not least how to sustain her way of life with her very secret author role.
but she can be a friend. she can help her friend find a wife. because with his trouble and his family running his estate amok he thinks a wife is exactly the key.
but can these two just be friends. can these two with this obvious chemistry and so much more be just friends. and might they find that the real answer to love, future and peace could be within each others love for one another?
Emme was such a brilliant character. such a fun and ferocious human but also a gentle and kind one too. she had it all and deserved it all too.
at first when Simon came back on the scene i was like "no Emmy dont take him, how dare he" but then slowly but surely he redeemed himself.
he also bought along some other great characters in his family members. they were fab and added to the whole feeling you get whilst reading this book which is pure joy.
Pepper has given us a true gem of a book and i cant wait to read more from this author!
Regency rom-com, full of chemistry, with strong themes of family and second chances.
Emmeline Lockhart is not looking for embarking on another season after the failure of the previous two to produce the desired result, and one of which resulted in scandal. Emmeline is witty, with a big heart, always ready to help. I loved the close bond she shares with her sister, and how they endure their aunt's coaching on how to secure a husband. I also enjoyed her exchanges with cousin Thomas, who is a brotherly friend and a source of a good portion of humor. I liked how she is challenged to see things differently as the facts are revealed.
Simon is a good brother and is doing what he can to provide for them the best that he can, though it is an uphill battle. He knows he must marry for money, but there is only one woman that his heart desires. I admired his dedication to taking care of his family.
Well written regency romance, full of romance, heart, humor, and wit, with strong likable protagonists. Engaging, with a well paced plot and great character interaction that brought a smile to my face. Wonderful read, clean content, with an adorable plot. Highly recommend!

Sense and Suitability was absolutely delightful. Pepper Basham captured everything I love about Regency romance, wit, longing, and characters with real depth. Emmeline and Simon’s story felt tender, emotional, and full of heart. Their chemistry was effortless, and the way their relationship unfolded kept me smiling the entire time.
This book felt like comfort and hope wrapped in elegant prose. I adored every page and didn’t want it to end.
Delightfully charming in every way!!
After two failed seasons, Emmeline Lockhart is determined to stay single and focus on her secret success as a popular (and anonymous) author. She once fell for the charming Simon Reeves, but he ghosted her without explanation.
Now he has reappeared, desperate to restore his family's ruined estate and reputation. Emmeline offers to help him find a wealthy bride, knowing they can never be together, despite the undeniable spark still between them. As old feelings resurface, Emmeline must decide if some love stories, especially the messy, inconvenient kind, deserve a second chance.
What you'll love:
second chance romance
dual pov
Regency era
duty vs. desire
Simon’s siblings
Aunt Bean's advice
Sooo much angst and longing!
THAT KISS!!
Secret identity
Perfect ending
Oh, my heart, I adored this book!! This swoony Regency romance sparkled with heart, wit, and all the anxious longing that comes with a second chance between two people trying (and failing) to put duty before desire. The story gave me ALL THE FEELS, and I was hooked from beginning to end!
Emmeline is a strong, independent heroine with a lively sense of adventure and a secret identity, and she’s exactly the kind of trouble Simon never knew he needed. Watching her navigate his chaotic household full of younger siblings and emotional landmines while trying to keep her own heart in check was pure magic. The chemistry between them practically crackled off the page and oh my, that kiss!! Someone pass my smelling salts!
I also couldn’t get enough of the side characters, from Simon’s spirited siblings to the always opinionated (and hilarious) Aunt Bean. Truly hoping we’ll get more stories from these characters. (hint, hint)
If you love books with swoony second chances, slow-burn tension, and irresistible Regency charm, you’ll want this one on your shelf ASAP...like today! Read it now, thank me later. So much love for this book!

Such a delightful read, and wow, the emotions flowed in this story; I haven’t had so many tears slide down my face while reading in a long time. Simon and Emme displayed such loyalty, selflessness, and kindness in spades, and I was on pins and needles wondering how they were going to work out their impossible situation. I can think of few main characters more deserving of their happily ever after than these two. Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction, I received a complimentary copy of this book. "Sense and Suitability" by Pepper Basham is a delightful clean Regency romance centered on Emmeline Lockhart, a woman with a scandalous past who has sworn off love after heartbreak.
When Simon Reeves the charming man who vanished from her life needs her help to save his crumbling estate and reputation, Emmeline reluctantly steps in as a friend and matchmaker.
Their undeniable chemistry rekindles old feelings, creating a sweet second-chance romance filled with fun witty banter.
Basham’s novel skillfully blends humor and emotional depth while staying true to Regency social norms, emphasizing emotional intimacy and growth over physical passion.
This story is perfect for readers who enjoy spirited, wholesome romances with complex characters and a satisfying enemies-to-lovers story.
Sense and Suitability by Pepper Basham is a joyful, sweet, swoony, second chance romance with plenty of regency wit and charm.
This story is everything I hoped for as a Jane Austen fan.
Thank you Thomas Nelson & NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Sigh....😍this book gives all the feels! If you love Regency novels and star crossed lovers you will eat this book up. I've been on a Pepper Basham kick lately and if you love her other books, this book will be no different!
Emme and Simon were moments away from being engaged when life changed everything for the pair. Simon leaves town and gains status while Emme was ridiculed. Fast forward two years and Simon is back in town and Emme is keeping a secret. They both still care for each other but due to circumstances Simon can't pursue her even though he wants to. Emme is determined to help Simon's family and Simon find a wife so everyone can move on. But the heart wants what the heart wants. It just needs to find a way.
I loved the inner struggle with Simon and how much he truly loves Emme. I also loved how much Emme loved not only Simon but also cared for his family. It was just a beautiful Basham book that left me with a book hangover. 😍
If you love Regency romance with all the charm, wit, and heart—this one’s for you! 💕 With a secret author, second chances, witty banter, and just the right amount of yearning, this story is everything a feel-good read should be.
After two failed seasons, Emmaline is determined to protect her dignity—and her heart. She’s secretly found success as an anonymous author, and she’s sworn off men… especially Simon, the man who once seemed perfect before he disappeared without a word. When Simon returns to England broke, scandal-ridden, and desperate to rebuild his family’s fortune, he’s also hoping for redemption—and maybe another chance with the woman he left behind.
Told in dual POV and sprinkled with light faith themes, Sense and Suitability is a charming, closed-door Regency romance full of meddling families, old feelings, and the sweetest happily ever after. ✨

Sense and Suitability is everything I hoped for as a Jane Austen fan. Filled with wit, charm, and heart, Pepper Basham once again delivers a story that perfectly balances humor and heartfelt emotion.
Emme and Simon’s journey is a beautiful second-chance romance that immediately drew me in. Their first courtship may have ended in heartbreak, but watching them find their way back to each other was both tender and deeply satisfying. I loved Emme from the start, she’s relatable, warm, and the kind of woman you’d love to have as a best friend. Simon, on the other hand, carries the weight of responsibility and regret, and seeing him grow and learn to open his heart again was so rewarding.
One of my favorite aspects of this story was how much laughter it brought me. Pepper Basham’s humor shines through, the chicken scene had me laughing out loud! The side characters as always were a great addition. Unique, sometimes frustrating, but always entertaining.
This book isn’t just a sweet romance; it’s also a reminder of grace, forgiveness, and the kind of love that truly sees you and helps you become your best self. It’s the perfect blend of Regency elegance, Austen-esque banter, and heartfelt inspiration.
If you enjoy Jane Austen novels , swoony and sincere second chances, and stories that make you both laugh and sigh in contentment, Sense and Suitability is one you shouldn’t miss.

Emmeline Lockhart is giving it another try in search of love and a husband. She has found a perfect match in Simon Reeves. However, on the day that he is supposed to propose, he sends her a note; "Everything has changed, please forgive me."
After two years she finds out Simon is back and she continues to have a pleasant frienship until she over hears Simon's wealthy aunt telling him that she will help him restore his estate as long as he finds a governess for his siblings, finds a wife ( though it can't be Emme) and remains free of scandal. Emme will help Simon reach his goal so that he can save the manor and his siblings can have a comfortable life. Even though she still has feelings for Simon.
There were several serious moments, but I enjoyed the funny ones the most. Emme's Aunt Albina Bridges and her views on marriage and how to cuff a husband were hilarious. Simon's little sister Fia was too cute and sweet trying to find "diamonds" to help out their monetary problems. And when Emme chased Lottie for stealing chickens because they didn't have eggs, it was hilarious. Her cousin Thomas was a great supporter of Emme, always being positive, understanding, and helping Emme with her secret. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book from beginning to end. Never a dull moment!
Thank you, Netgalley and Thomas Nelson-Fiction, for this eARC. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Emme has sworn off love after having her heart broken, but her aunt is determined to marry her off by the season’s end. She is different than most ladies of the ton as she is a published author and therefore believes she is in no need of a husband.
Simon is definitely reckless with matters of the heart and his family was reckless with the matters of their estate. When Simon is unexpectedly thrust into nobility, he has to take care of his younger siblings and their family’s crumbling estate.
I love how vulnerable and real the characters felt as I read their complex relationship. Emme constantly had her heart broken but never gave up on her passion of writing. Simon was so torn with doing what was right for his family and was ready to do whatever it took to care for his siblings. The writing was excellent, the plot amazing and I love how Pepper wove the details of Jane Austen’s writing into the storyline.
I was SO excited to read this book, it has been one of my most anticipated books of the year. The chemistry and yearning are perfect. Pepper Basham is a queen of closed door romance and this book did not disappoint.

After two unsuccessful seasons, Emmeline Lockhart’s family is certain the third will finally bring her triumph. Emme, however, would be perfectly content simply to emerge with her pride—and her independence—intact. Once, she thought she had found the ideal match in Simon Reeves: handsome, charming, the very picture of a storybook hero. But when he vanished without a word of farewell or even the smallest apology, she learned her lesson well—never trust a man celebrated for his charm.
Unlike many young ladies of the ton, Emme has no need of a husband. She has already secured her own success in a daring (and entirely anonymous) career as a novelist. Why marry when she can shape her own destiny—and create heroes exactly to her liking—on the page?
Fate, however, has other plans. Simon’s once-grand estate is in disarray, his family’s fortune squandered, and his younger siblings left to run wild. Now Simon is in desperate need of both a respectable marriage and a steadfast ally.
Emmeline may not be an heiress, but she can be his friend. Just a friend. She will help him find a suitable bride, protect his reputation, and—above all—keep her heart from entangling with his once more.
Yet the spark between them proves difficult to ignore. Can Emme truly guide Simon toward another woman while guarding her own feelings? Or could it be that some love stories—especially the difficult, imperfect, and unexpected ones—deserve to be written anew?
I like this story! A perfect second chance romance. Well written, funny and with great main characters and seconds ones too. Love Simon's sibblings, Aunt Bean, the soowny moments, witty Emme and her energy and charisma and Simon's redemption and his way back to Emme's heart.

This lovely story was exactly what I was hoping for when I picked up a Pepper Basham title. Full of her signature wit, hijinks and hysterics, and a swoon worthy romance, I adored this clean, regency romance that is definitely one of my favorite reads of the year.
In Sense and Suitability, we follow our lovely heroine Emmeline Lockhart, who was expecting a proposal from the man who stole her heart, and instead she's left devastated when he chooses a different direction, and leaves her on the path to spinster hood. When her bossy aunt decides to push her back into society at the hopes of making a match, Emmeline is stunned when Simon, the once object of her love and affection, is also suddenly reappearing in society in her small village. While it would have been tempting to see Simon as a scoundrel, the reader learns right along with Emmeline that there's so much more to him than meets the eye, and she soon finds herself volunteering to help him make the perfect match.
What follows is a brilliant Jane Austen inspired story that showcases the author's talent for penning romances, and pulling readers into the heart of the story. Simon and Emmeline were truly adorable, and I adored watching their romance regrow into something real that could stand the test of time. Although, I have to admit that while I loved the romance and the comedic bits of the plot, my favorite part of the story ended up being Simon's adorable siblings, especially Sophia who was such a card with her pet frog named Blast.
I can't possibly recommend this heartwarming romance enough, and I can't wait to read it again in the future. If you're a fan of clean, regency novels, then this is one you are definitely not going to want to miss.
Final Rating: 5/5.

Well, I thought this was just an adorable read! The characters are charming. Simon has been handed more responsibility than he was prepared for. I loved watching him grow and.refine his life into a loving guardian, dutiful land owner and man of honor. Emmeline is strong willed, intelligent and caring. Being devastated when the man she thought she would marry, left without a word. She picks up her pen and began her passion, being a secret author, writing gothic novels. The story is charming, witty, engaging, and sweet. I was fully invested their love story. I loved the references to Sense and Sensibility. I received a complimentary copy of this book. It’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed a Regency romance as much as I did Sense and Suitability. This novel has it all: emotion, humor, chaos, and love. Talk about entertaining!! This novel is positively wonderful!
From the beginning, my heart hurt for Emmeline. It wasn’t a virtue to be a strong and independent woman in this era, and marriages felt more like business transactions than love. It’s truly heartbreaking as it’s clear that Emmeline wants to write her own story, and she has the tenacity and gumption to do it. I gave her so much credit for not letting heartbreak get her down, and how she kept her wit and heart of gold despite her circumstances was admirable.
Emmeline and Simon are truly some of my favorite leading characters, as it’s a joy to witness their interactions. The multiple meet-cutes that Emmeline shares with Simon, the supposed rake that broke her heart, kept this story engaging and entertaining. I also loved the supporting cast, particularly Simon’s siblings. Talk about cuteness overload! They each bring a richness to the narrative that I feel would’ve been lacking without them.
Just when I thought I couldn’t fall more in love with Pepper Basham, she comes out with something like this that makes my heart swoon all the more. I was constantly entertained and felt all the feels while I was reading Sense and Suitability. I wish all Regency romances could be this wonderful.

I found this story to be quite delightful. I was drawn to it by the title since I love all things Jane Austen. Part way in I didn't think it was mirroring Sense and Sensibility very well and wondered if I'd misunderstood about that title but it did become clear. While the story pays homage to Austen's work, it isn't a retelling or a variation of the original story. However, there appears to be some likenesses in characters' behaviors between the two stories as characters compare themselves or others to Austens'. I loved all the references to S&S. Very fun.
There was a bit of repetition and I felt a slowing in the pace of the story in the middle somewhere but it didn't really take away from my enjoyment of the story. I thought it was fun read.
I liked the characters and their strengths and weaknesses. They both had both. And I loved the siblings in both families. The aunts were an aquired taste. Ha ha.
Aww, this was too precious! I certainly hope Pepper Basham writes more Regencies because this one was loads of fun. I loved the characters and their clear attraction to each other, and I especially loved the hero’s sprightly family of younger siblings! Oh dear, did this man ever have his hands full with them, especially his two little sisters…
The descriptions were really well done also, to the point that I felt present in the scenes and not just some spectator overhearing the conversations. I was in the library, in the ballroom, in the garden, and even in the pond! Haha…what a fun scene that was.

Sense & Suitability by Pepper Basham is a delightful Regency Romance that will keep you up until the wee hours of the night.
Emmeline Lockhart believed that Simon Reeves loved her. In fact, he had arranged a rendezvous with her at a ball they were both attending, with the express intention of asking her to marry him. So Emme (as she was called) waited in the garden for her beloved. Only to be handed a calling card from a butler, which indicated he would not be coming. What Emme didn’t know were the circumstances behind Simon’s disappearance and his decision not to marry her.
I enjoyed this book so very much as Emme slowly came to grips with Simon’s decision. Simon, for his part, regrets his decision, and for the rest of the novel, we get to see if these two can find their way back to each other. The odds are not in their favour.
I loved how the author included the Jane Austen story of Sense & Sensibility and how it played out with this couple. The faith element was present and well done so as not to be preachy.
If you enjoy clean Regency Romance with a Jane Austen vibe, you will love Sense & Suitability.

Sense and Suitability is a lovely start to a new Regency series that is entertaining with great characters in a small town setting. Emmeline and Simon courted two years ago before he left without an explanation. Now, they have a second chance but theirs is not a match that is possible. He, now a viscount, needs a wealthy bride to restore his family estate: she doesn't have a large dowry and she has a secret that the Ton would not approve of. This story has humor with a variety of secondary characters, some adorable young siblings, well meaning but strict aunts, and a sweet ending about what is important in life with a touch of faith that s sure to put a smile on your face.
I’ll never tire of a Jane Austen retelling and this author weaves in all the delight and wit to a beloved tale. Everything is just so…scandalous…and I adored this second chance, no spice story with an enemies-to-love feeling.
Emmeline has a secret and a past connection to Simon, who suddenly makes a reappearance back into her life. The themes of love and duty prevail, while matters of the heart creep in to twist things up. These two are such alluring characters and I love them together, but I really enjoyed the side characters: Aunt Bean and the siblings, and especially Blast It All, are fantastic!
All the chance encounters, longing, chemistry-laden undercurrents, swoony kisses, and shenanigans had me laughing and swooning. I love a sweet story that sweeps me away and this one is so amusing and fun. Great characters, an interesting plot, and outstanding writing make Sense and Suitability a winner.

Pepper Basham’s writing is a breath of fresh air! I cannot get enough of her historical fiction romances. She has a fun, clean, but not boring, way of developing her characters love story’s. When I first began the story, I was concerned it was going to be a bit overly predictable, but it wasn’t! The story had some delightful twists that kept the story moving forward. I enjoyed the references to Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, so much so that I am now tempted to try the classic myself!
I enjoyed Emmeline’s pure and noble spirit and appreciated Simon’s ‘mostly’ unwavering disposition. Their characters complimented each other perfectly in the turmoil that was tradition, necessity and even honor.
Highly recommended, 5 out of 5 stars! Thank you Netgalley for this ARC copy in exchange for my honest review. Is it too soon to ask for a sequel??
Sense and Suitability by Pepper Basham
This was a wonderful story of sacrificial love and personal growth. Perfect for fans of regency romance and banter. The story was well paced with complex characters and situations, as well as endearing and funny side characters to round out the reading experience. It was such a delightful and engaging read.
I loved the nods to the wet shirt scene in the Pride and Prejudice movie, the hand flex from the other movie, and the characters' discussion of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility.
I also appreciated the positive view of Christianity, faith and the clergy in this book. It was refreshing for a recency novel. This, along with how well crafted and witty the writing was means I'll definitely be reading more from Pepper Basham.

This was such an engaging story.
I was swept away within the pages. Feeling every frustration, anguish, desperation, joy, laughter, and every other emotion these characters felt.
This second chance romance was sprinkled with a little enemy (on Emme’s part) to lovers, a heaping of yearning, and a whole lot of hilarity that made this story an absolutely captivating page turner.
Emme and Simon faced many hurdles that threatened to keep them apart for good. Confronted by Society’s expectations: choose duty, social standing, and money or choose love and happiness.
Their journey is a beautiful one filled with reconnection, forgiveness, realization, hope, and love.
So many hilarious moments were seamlessly woven throughout that I had a perpetual smile on my face. I couldn’t get enough of Fia!!
I adore Pepper’s style of writing that blends touching life lessons and humor.
Beautiful, funny, refreshing, and delightful.
An utter joy!!
Thank you to NetGalley, Thomas Nelson Publishing, and Pepper Basham for the copy. All opinions are my own.
Swooning, weak-kneed, faint, in a delirium induced by pure joy and utter happiness…and any other word that would indicate the need for one’s smelling salts. Where exactly does one buy smelling salts? Anyway…What. A. Book. I don’t usually love second chance romances, but this may have changed that for me. I kind of loved how their connection and past were already established and how everything moved on from that point. This had everything you could ever want: sweet sibling relationships, vibrant side characters that absolutely need their own stories, and a hand holding scene on par with THE hand scene in Pride & Prejudice, circa 2005. Just a pure delight!
I’ve read my fair share of Regency books, and this is an absolute standout in the genre. With her signature humor, quip-filled characters, effortless writing style, and the gentlest of romances, Pepper Basham completely knocked it out of the park in her first Regency romance.
SIMON. REEVES. Viscount of Ravenscross,
unintentional raven-haired rogue, best big brother/guardian, and the most besotted fool for Emmeline Lockhart. Ugh, what a man. I ADORE him. He made plenty of mistakes, but was always humbled by them and consistently had a heart to do the right thing. His love for Emme was so pure😭
EMMELINE. LOCKHART. Bespectacled authoress, genuine sweetheart, and the most precious of souls. I LOVE her. She had such a capacity for forgiveness and understanding even, at times, when it was a detriment to her own heart. Though she had a soft heart, I loved that she could hold her own. In the face of ridicule and criticism, she stood up for herself and never wavered.
WHEN THEY WERE TOGETHER! 🫠🫠 One of my favorite couples. The angst. Their chemistry. Their wounded hearts healing with each other😭 LOVE THEM.
A few things I loved♥️
-Thomas!!
-The flowers and their meanings
-Ben’s advice🥹
-Light faith themes
-Sophia and her “diamonds”
-The kisses🫠

Sweet, clean Regency rom-com. I really enjoyed this novel- and am now adding the rest of Pepper Basham’s books to my TBR list!
Emmeline Lockhart has sworn off love, not an easy feat in those times. But Emme has secretly been publishing gothic novels, a scandalous profession for a woman (gasp) in those days. So she is hoping to be able to remain single, and to guard her heart after having it broken two years earlier by Simon Reeves, who had vanished without a word after claiming to be ready to propose marriage. Now Simon is back- with a title this time, and a struggling estate and struggling younger siblings to care for. Emme and Simon keep crossing paths, much to both of their dismays. Emme realizes there was more to Simon’s disappearance- and while she can’t provide the wealth Simon requires, she decides to help him find a suitable (aka wealthy and nice) bride for both his sake and for his young siblings.
I recently started reading historical romances again, and the ridiculous rules of propriety of old were very annoying to read about- but I guess that is what they were! The sweet romance, cast of characters, and witty banter more than made up for it. Highly recommend!
Thank you to Ballantine Books and to NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advanced copy. Truly a delight!
I adored this book!! Such a wonderful and sweet story by Pepper! It had all the sweetness with some hilarious characters! The MMC is one who yearns! I didn’t wanna stop reading! I love the second chance romance and enemies to lovers trope! You’ve gotta read this one!

Emmeline Lockhart had a glorious season that almost ended in a proposal, but instead fell apart. She has moved on, pouring out stories onto the page and publishing anonymously several novels. Her blustering Aunt has arrived to oversee Emme’s third season, give husband-hunting lessons, and help Emme and her sister Aster find husbands.
The only problem? The man who broke her heart that first season has returned home, and Emme is about to learn the reasons he abandoned her. Simon Reeves was the younger son, who lost his cousin and father and gained a title, all on the night he had planned to propose to Emme. In the months that followed, Simon learned how deeply in debt the estate was, lost his mother, became guardian for his five younger siblings, and had one sibling run away for an unwise marriage. Struggling to keep things afloat, Simon is running out of time. He needs to marry well, meaning a woman who brings wealth to rescue the failing estate.
This was a wonderful story with warmth, humor, and strong relationships of family and friendships. I loved it!

I love a good nod to Austen and this was just that. It's a cute story about two people who belong together; they just don't know it. As we all have come to expect from a Basham novel, there is plenty of witty banter and quirkiness but you also find characters who care about what is best for others and are willing to sacrifice for it. If you are looking for a regency novel that feels modern without being modern, this one was a treat to both the heart and the funny bone.

"Sense and Suitability" by Pepper Basham is an enchanting sweet historical romance that captured my heart. The plot is excellently crafted, weaving a story that's both engaging and heartwarming. The characters are wonderfully interesting, each bringing their unique charm to the narrative, making it easy to connect with them.
What I loved most was the delightful blend of humor peppered throughout the story, adding a lightness that made reading even more enjoyable. The writing is smooth and easy to follow, perfect for immersing yourself without feeling weighed down.
Best of all, it has a satisfying, happy ending that leaves you with a smile. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves historical romances with a sweet twist, engaging characters, and a feel-good conclusion. A truly delightful read!
Simon and Emme simply stole my heart! This story is absolutely amazing.
Beautiful themes of forgiveness, obligation, expectation, and of course—love that triumphs over all. The nods to Jane Austen and her works, the sacrifice and duty to family, the banter, the tension, longing, and desire to do right by those you love at any cost make this a brilliant story that I will for sure be reading again. An absolute must-read that brings all the feels and the very best kind of HEA.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! From the regency era setting to the characters to the enemies to lovers trope, every part of this story was a delight.
Emmeline Lockhart was left without explanation, alone in a garden on the night that she was supposed to be proposed to. Now two years later, Simon, once the man who broke Emme’s heart, returns to St. Groves in need of a wealthy bride to help pull his family from ruin. After trying to avoid Simon for the beginning of the season, Emme has an encounter with Simon that leaves her wanting to help him, but strictly as a friend. Will she be able to help him without losing her heart to him again?
In addition to the main characters, the supporting characters help to bring the story to life. Both Emme’s and Simon’s siblings are full of personality. They are all unique in character and each one adds something special to the story. I also loved the aunts! Aunt Bean, while not always the most lovable character, is filled with lessons in “husband catching” made me laugh out loud at times. Aunt Agatha is an endearing woman who seems stern at the onset of the story but has a depth to her that is shown throughout the story.
Pepper Basham quickly became one of my favorite authors and this book is no exception! I loved every moment I spent with this story and couldn’t wait to come back to it every time I had to put it down.

A Regency rom-com? Yes, please!!
When Simon Reeves left without a word—or a marriage proposal—Emmeline Lockhart’s season was ruined. Now her family is convinced she’ll be a spinster for sure if she doesn’t marry this season. But Emmeline has other plans. Plans that don’t include the return of Simon Reeves.
This is Pepper Basham at her best! Laugh-out-louds, perfectly imperfect characters, witty banter, and swoon-worthy (but clean!), tenderhearted romance. And the many nods to Jane Austen only added to the fun. An absolutely irresistible delight to read!

An absolutely fabulous second chance Regency romance...
Wow, how I loved Emme and Simon's story. 😍 Pepper Basham has such a way with words, weaving a tale of genuine heartache and hope.
I liked Emme in all her innocence and naivety the moment she appeared on the page, and enjoyed her journey through anger and heartache, softening into the understanding and compassionate heroine she was destined to be.
Despite my initial thoughts regarding Simon (how could I form a true opinion from the point of view of his former, crushed beau?), I liked him once I heard directly from him (and not just about him 😉). While happy to fault himself, he went to extraordinary lengths to fix his mistakes and right the wrongs of his father and cousin. Simon was the stuff of heroes and the epitome of a beloved "Book Boyfriend".
A fabulous, sweet, yet witty, and fun romance worthy of any romance lover, but especially one who enjoys Jane Austen and Regency romances.

Regency rom-com is not a genre I would ever have imagined enjoying but I love Pepper Basham's historical fiction and know her writing will not disappoint and it certainly did not. Sense and Suitability is delightful, charming and fun. The story, with nods to Jane Austin, has engaging characters and enjoyably witty dialogue that makes this book an absolute joy to read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the opportunity to read for my honest review.
Pepper Basham does it again, this time with regency romance! What a fun book! I loved all of the references to Sense and Sensibility as the mmc was reading it per the recommendation of the fmc. This book had everything one could hope for in a clean regency romance, and I'm so glad I was able to read it. I hope there will be more in this series about some of the other characters we were introduced to in this one. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the advanced copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
Sense and Suitability is Pepper Basham’s latest clean romantic comedy set in the Regency era. There is no profanity or sex scenes, but plenty of witty banter and chemistry between the main characters.
Emmeline “Emme” Lockhart lives in the small village of St. Groves, England, with her widowed father and two younger siblings. She has secretly published three action-adventure novels under a pseudonym with the help of her beloved cousin, Thomas. During her first Season, Emme fell in love with a charming rake, Simon Reeves, who was a no-show when they were supposed to meet in a garden during a ball. His disappearance created a minor scandal and tarnished her reputation, so she hasn’t found a suitable husband after two Seasons. She’s okay with remaining a spinster and hopes to sponsor her younger sister, Aster, for a Season with her publishing earnings. Then her pushy Aunt Albina “Bean” interferes and appoints herself as Emme’s matchmaker for her third Season.
Simon Reeves was content as the cousin of Lord Ravenscross and had planned to propose marriage to Emme until he received notice of multiple deaths in his family. He learned that his cousin had bankrupted the family lands and his father had incurred gambling debts. His mother died from the stress of Simon’s brother, Theodore “Teddy”, going to war. Simon’s sister, Arianna, ran off with her lover, leaving the three youngest Reeves children at home. Their Aunt Agatha had enough, so Simon had to return home to care for the young ones, who basically ran wild. Now that he’s the Viscount of Ravenscross, he needs to marry quickly in order to infuse cash into the estate.
To complicate matters, Simon had a dalliance in the past with Selena, a neighbor whose property borders the Ravenscross lands. Selena’s father wants the land and Selena is willing to restart a relationship with Simon in order to make that happen. So Simon enlists Emme to play matchmaker to help find him a suitable, wealthy wife. Emme and Simon still have feelings for each other, but he is unaware of her secret career and wealth, which would make her an unsuitable match if discovered.
Sense and Suitability is an enjoyable Regency romance that contains many hilarious scenes. While this plotline has been used by other authors, it feels fresh with these compelling characters who readers will love. Readers will absolutely feel the chemistry between Emme and Simon and cheer for them to find their happily ever after. All of the characters are colorful, especially the younger siblings, and the scenes are so clearly depicted. Sense and Suitability feels like a Hallmark version of Bridgerton.
I received an Advance Review Copy (ARC) from NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Emmeline (Emme) Lockhart is attending a ball in St. Groves at the home of Lord and Lady Ruthton. Emme is an anonymous published author and enjoys her secret work. Tonight she is expecting to get a marriage proposal from Simon Reeves, heir to the Viscount of Ravencross. Just as she goes to step outside she is given a note from a a footman. It is from Simon saying everything has changed.
Two years later, and Emme’s Aunt Bean and cousin, Thomas, a rector, are visiting her. Her aunt is determined that Emme will get out into the balls and find a husband. She has researched the available men and tells her that she must meet these men and marry.
Simon has now become the Viscount of Ravencross after a tragedy that left him the only heir. The previous Viscount had spent lots of money and has left his home in shambles and in need of repair. There is little money and Simon is also responsible for caring for his 3 younger siblings. His friend, Ben, tells him he must find a rich wife but all he can think about is Emme whom he loved.
Simon and Emme are drawn to one other when they meet at balls. However, Emme is still hurt by Simon’s defection and he knows that he must marry a woman with money. However, the women with money are not at all appealing to him. When Emme learns of Simon’s financial situation, she takes it upon herself to help him solve his problems and even to help him find a suitable wife.
Very rarely does a reader find a book that they wish they could award with 10 stars. In my opinion, this is one of those rare finds. I loved the angst and heartbreak portrayed in the story, and the selflessness of Emme grabbed my heart. Her character is just beautiful. Her family is so cute as is Simon’s family. However, bitter Aunt Bean could take a hike. Do not miss this lovely story. It’s delightful!

In her first foray into Regency historical romance, Pepper Basham has crafted a delightful, delicious tale of second chances. A re-telling of Jane Austen’s Sense and Suitability, there are many nods to Austen and her writing which will delight Austen fans.
Basham is a master at creating endearing, realistic, and flawed characters and wrapping them up in a story that brings them out the other side much better than they were. Emmeline has sworn off men after a couple of failed seasons and a suitor who disappeared without a word. She is content to be an anonymous, but successful, author. When Simon Reeves, her former suitor, reappears in her life in need of a wealthy bride to repair his inherited estate, Emme agrees to help him find a match.
The addition of some quirky secondary characters added fun to the story—a couple of interfering aunts, Simon’s siblings, and a frog named Blast-It-All.
I love Pepper Basham’s writing. It flows naturally, and her delightful sense of humor shines through her stories. The dialogue is witty and amusing, and she scatters the tale with inspirational messages so seamlessly that they aren’t preachy or overbearing.
“Why, he wondered, did the deepest lessons always come through the harshest trials?”
Brimming with wit and charm and full of Basham’s signature sense of humor and beautiful prose, this book is one for the keeper shelf. Themes of faith, forgiveness, family, and the power of love are woven seamlessly throughout the book and add to the journey into this intriguing world.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
This sweet but sizzling Regency romance is a delight! I am so thrilled that Pepper Basham has entered the Regency world with her unique writing style of swoony romance, heartfelt messages, and hilarious moments— this time offering a clean romance in a Bridgerton-esque way! Emmeline and Simon are destined to be with each other— they just don’t realize it right away because of the age-old encumbrances of familial duty, societal expectations, and scandal. I love that these two find their way to each other by staying true to themselves while risking it all for each other. This story, although not a mystery or a suspense, will keep you riveted until the very last page as you eagerly await a happily ever after! I loved this book so much, and I am so excited for future regency romcoms by Pepper Basham!
I received a copy of this book for review purposes. My thoughts are my own— I really did adore it!
Firstly thank you for the opportunity to read a copy of this wonderful book!
To me this book was a great read, I found the characters were quite funny, and had the right amount of irritating at times! I did find that this book was repetitive with its storyline at times but it was manageable. I love how we follow both Simon and Emme and can see from both side, how heart broken they are/were and how utterly in love they are.
I love the fact this is written in old style, it was very enjoyable.
I hope this book does well for the Author, I shall be recommending this to my family and friends.
Happy reading.
This was a splendid read. A delight in the world of Regency romance.
From a complex cast of characters Pepper Basham weaves the complexity of human hearts with the rigors and restraints of society expectations.
This is a second chance romance with warmth and hope that works it's way into your heart. One of my top historical reads this year!
Filled with nods to Jane Austen and brimming with a light that made this book a joy to read.
Highly recommend for fans of humor and historical romance.
This is a delightful and charming regency story! I loved the characters, and I thought the story was sweet and fun. The forbidden romance between Simon and Emme gave the right amount of tension to the story, and Aunt Bean’s “lessons” added humor, along with Simon’s siblings and their escapades.
I haven’t read Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen, and I haven’t seen any movies for it. But I still enjoyed the references in this story to Sense and Sensibility and the characters of that book! I think it would be fun to read Sense and Sensibility and then reread this book, because I’m sure there were references that I didn’t understand, but this book can be read and enjoyed by people who aren’t previously familiar with Sense and Sensibility! I appreciated how this book was written to appeal to both Jane Austen readers and people who haven’t read that specific book by her yet.
I have been a longtime reader of Pepper Basham’s books, and it was fun to see her branch into a new genre! I hope she writes more regency books, because I would love to read them!

After two unsuccessful social seasons, Emmeline Lockhart would rather keep her freedom and her secret career as a successful, anonymous novelist than marry for convenience. She’s sworn off charming men, especially after Simon Reeves, the one man she thought perfect, disappeared from her life without a word. Now, years later, Simon returns, burdened by a family in disarray and desperate to restore both his estate and his reputation. He needs a wealthy bride. Emmeline is certainly not that, but she tries to convince herself that she can be his friend and assist him with finding a suitable bride. Yet neither Simon nor Emmie is able to put their feelings aside, and the line between friendship and rekindled affection blurs.
What truly sets this author apart is her ability to focus in on the most vital characters and explore each of them so that the reader not only understands them but also their frailties and strengths. Simon’s siblings are beautifully drawn, each with a distinct voice and purpose. I loved their relationship with Simon and how, despite their sadness, it was evident that together they could weather any storm. Equally touching is the dynamic between Emmeline and her cousin Thomas as well as that of her father, which gave the novel a rare depth and tenderness. 5+ stars.
Sense and Suitability is everything we love and expect from Pepper Basham — but in a regency setting. There's a lively heroine and a reluctant (even slightly rakish!) hero, a faithful friend of a cousin as a side character, and a precocious child to bring comic relief. And in this particular book, there are opinionated aunts enough to make even P.G. Wodehouse proud.
“‘So we are to be simultaneously captivating, complimentary, and incomprehensible?’” (to summarize the advice of one aunt).
While there are many references by the characters themselves to Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, it's not a retelling, but more of a tribute set in the same era. (Though fans of Little Women may see a bit of Jo March in Emmeline Lockhart, as well.)
“Taking a woman’s book recommendation to heart might be one of the most romantic things in all the world.”
I always love the way Pepper Basham writes sibling and cousin relationships, and Sense and Suitability is no exception. In fact, I'm hoping there are future titles featuring our heroine’s travel-hungry sister Aster and their kindly curate cousin Thomas—not to mention the hero’s best friend Benjamin.
“‘What would it look like to have a wife who would stand beside you—not just in the ballroom, but here, in the work?’” (quoth Benjamin).

** “Reputations are slippery things, often shaped by the tongues that spread them.” **
Pepper Basham takes on a Jane Austen tone with her latest novel, “Sense & Suitability,” a story of overcoming reputation, offering forgiveness and finding hope.
Emme Lockhart is dealing with a broken heart. Two years ago she thought she was going to become engaged to the love of her life, Simon Reeves. When he was suddenly called away and broke off their courtship with no explanation, she was left reeling. But taking on a secret, and what some would consider scandalous, career helps her through the heartbreak.
So when Simon returns in a higher social position due to deaths in his family, she knows all hope is lost. But as their paths keep crossing, will the flame reignite? And will she be able to help his family?
Basham does an incredible job of creating an Austenian story reminiscent of “Pride and Prejudice” and “Sense and Sensibility,” which is oft quoted throughout the story. She develops a great cast of characters, including some “helpful” aunts, not-so-nice fortune hunters, some adorable children, and a frog named Blast. She also fills “Sense & Suitability” with several great themes, like finding one’s purpose; showing grace to others; unchecked imaginations can ruin both reputation and friendship; stories are everywhere; find joy in other’s happiness, even sometimes at the cost of your own heart; we don’t always know a person’s full story; kindness is better than vengeance; and there is always a reason to hope.
Fans of Jane Austen will obviously love this story, as well as authors like Joanna Davidson Politano, Sarah E. Ladd and Abigail Wilson.
Five stars out of five.

I would recommend Sense and Suitability to anyone who enjoys historical romance filled with witty banter, charming characters, and heartfelt second chances. I’m a relatively new fan of Pepper Basham, but I continue to be impressed by her storytelling—whether contemporary or historical—and this Regency gem is another shining example of her talent.
In this clean, cleverly written romance, Emmeline Lockhart has sworn off love after heartbreak and scandal. Once smitten with the ever-charming Simon Reeves, she’s now focused on her secret career as a successful author—until Simon unexpectedly reappears in need of help. What follows is a delightful mix of humor, heart, and undeniable chemistry as Emmeline tries to help Simon find a suitable bride while resisting her own rekindled feelings.
Pepper Basham delivers everything readers love about the Regency era—adorable children, sparkling dialogue, and swoon-worthy moments—while adding her signature warmth and humor. Sense and Suitability is a thoroughly enjoyable second-chance romance that proves some love stories truly deserve a rewrite.
I just finished this cute regency second chance romance book and I really enjoyed it. It is a dual POV which moves the story line well. It was a fun closed door romance with witty dialogue and I would love to see a book for Emmeline's sister Aster.
Emmeline Lockhart has gone through two seasons and is still unwed. After a failure and broken heart the first season, will she be able to find her true love this season? They do say the third time's the charm after all. Unfortunately the one who broke her heart, Simon Reeves, the new Viscount of Ravencross, is back in town. And he is in search of a wealthy and proper wife which means Emmeline is completely out of the running.
I recommend you give this a read if you are looking for a sweet regency romance with Jane Austen vibes.

This book may be my new favorite from this author. We have Emme, a secret author, and Simon, a man with a crumbling estate. He jilted her two years earlier, and now both of them are looking for marriages of convenience. She is expected to marry so she isn’t an old spinster (at something like 22 years old…), and he has to marry someone with a healthy dowry so he can save his family’s legacy. Neither is suited for the other. But that’s what Sense and Suitability is all about.
I hate miscommunication in novels. How hard would it have been for Simon to be honest with Emme about why he left her? It would have cleared up so much. I liked her so much and wanted for her to find peace. His character grew, and I ended up liking him, too.
The plot is sweet and fun, and I always love a good clean romance. This author has a gift that keeps me coming back every single time. The covers don’t hurt either because they’re stunning.
I received this ARC from NetGalley for my honest review.

With her signature wit, Pepper Basham has written another winner in a new genre for her: Sense and Suitability is patterned after the beloved Jane Austen tome.
Emmeline Lockhart is a secret authoress and has not found a suitor since Simon Reeves disappeared at a ball two years ago. Tragedy struck Simon and subsequently he inherits not only a title but plenty of problems and sizable debt. In true Austen and Regency fashion, hero Simon must find a wealthy lady to save his estate, when his heart yearns for respectable but not so wealthy heroine Emme.
The story is peopled with familiar characters such as clergyman cousins, interfering but well meaning aunts, jealous conniving female rivals, loveable but unruly siblings and bothersome unsuitable suitors.
And who can resist the romantic scenes with kisses to make you swoon, not to mention an unexpected splash in a pond and a Darcy-like hero emerging from said pond.
Loads of fun, romance, angst, and good spiritual lessons. It will be hard to wait for the next Regency from this author. I know it will be just as captivating.

Synopsis: England 1813 - After a disastrous flirtation with the notorious rake Simon Reeves leaves Miss Emmeline "Emme" Lockhart heartbroken and scandalised, her imposing Aunt steps in as matchmaker to push Emme into a suitable marriage and restore the family's reputation. To her horror Simon is also entering the marriage mart on the hunt for a wealthy heiress to absolve the crippling debt and tarnished reputation he inherited with his new title as Lord Ravenscross - criteria Emme's small dowry and shameful authoress secret could never fulfil. As their paths wind around each other, will Emme and Simon listen to their hearts or bend to duty?
Review: I adored this book! Witty characters, redemption of a rake, a wild family, and a second chance romance made for an entertaining and emotional story. I particularly liked the fun banter between Emme and her cousin Thomas. The romance was soft and slow, with real emotions that made this such a sweet story. The way Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility was woven into the story was very clever and really strengthened the story and character motivations.

I was beyond thrilled with this Regency romance from Pepper Basham! And I loved all of the nods to Jane Austen and her book, Sense and Sensibility, throughout the book. So much fun!
As the book opened, I was so excited for Emme and her excitement over an upcoming proposal and engagement with Simon. Only to have my heart plummet for her with what followed. But Emme is full of pluck and determination to find joy and power through the hard moments of her life. I just adored her character so much. I think most readers will have a hard time not adoring her character. I loved all of the writing nods and so much more about this book.
Simon has secrets and reasons for why he left Emme and didn't propose like they'd planned. But none of them will help him in his current family predicament. He's just trying to keep everything running and make sure that all of his siblings are being take care of, loved and happy. But he's falling apart at the seams. And in every good rom-com the two leads have to be brought back together again so they can fix the wrongs. And let me just tell you that I loved every moment of these two together. They are adorable. And are definitely meant to be! Your heart is going to love their story.
And Simon's siblings will win your heart over! Especially one with a pet frog named "Blast!" Hahaha! Oh my heavens, I laughed and giggled over all of his siblings' antics. Hold onto your hat Simon because you are in for one wild ride. The most amazing ride ever as you'll come to know your siblings even more and you'll have an adorably amazing young lady by your side. Yep, you're going to want this book in your life!!!
I did a combination of reading the digital book and listening to the audiobook. Fiona Hardingham and Christopher Ashman were delightful narrators. I loved their accents. And I loved the joy and laughter and all of the emotions that they conveyed through their narration. They were truly delightful to listen to! You'll be sucked into this story and won't want it to end. And can I just say I can't wait for the next book!!!!!!!! Pepper Basham, you rock and are amazing!!! Thank you for this incredible book!!!
Content: Clean. Sweet kisses and nothing further. Some Christian elements but just sweetly added to the story. I loved it!

Oh. My. Soul!! Pepper Basham has released her first regency novel and it is a must read!!! Feeling parts Emma, part Persuasion, part Sense and Sensibility, this novel is a masterpiece. Fia, Lottie, and Will are my favourite characters, and the remaining supporting cast is also fantastic! I love how Simon and Emme grow throughout the story, and like always, the HEA is well deserved and masterfully delivered!

An absolutely charming regency-era love story!
Emme is a kind, strong, loyal, and compassionate young woman dealing with the aftereffects of a failed courtship two years prior.
After a whirlwind romance brought Emme and Simon together, they were on the cusp of an engagement when Simon unexpectedly left her alone in a garden, with no word of explanation. Two years later, he’s back as the new Lord Ravenscross after inheriting his family title after the unexpected loss of his father and cousin. Over those two years Simon was faced with an avalanche of problems left to him by late his father and cousin and the unfortunate choice of his sister.
Now in need of a large dowry in order to save his estate, Simon is faced with a choice, and an ultimatum from his aunt, the only family member left who has finances that can support his estate until he can remedy their financial situation. Simon must marry by the end of the season and the woman must be suitable to his situation, in both reputation and character.
Emme is a country gentleman’s daughter with a modest dowry and secret authoress, a scandalous secret to have for a woman in the regency era.
As these two grow back together and work to overcome their past heartache, they struggle with duty and love. The two years apart has done nothing to dampen their feelings, but the weight of expectations from members of both of their families as well as the pressure for Simon to make the best choice for himself, his family, and his estate threaten to separate them forever.
This is a truly enchanting and emotional story of love and loss and how two people can grow back together after being hurt. They show sacrifice, loyalty, love, and compassion and stand up for what they know it right.
There is so much humor and wit within all of the characters and it was such a joy to meet the little Fia and her beloved Blast (read the book, you’ll love it as much as I did!).
The incorporation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility was also delightful! I loved the connections that were made between the two stories and getting to learn about Emme as a writer.
This was such a delightful story to read and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys love stories, regency, Jane Austen, or historical fiction!

I’ve loved Pepper Basham’s books in so many different genres through the years. Her relatable characters, humor, heartfelt and often witty dialogue always combine to tell a great story with twists and turns to keep me on the edge of my seat to see how it is going to turn out. I wondered if I would feel the same with the author’s debut novel in the Regency genre. I did! The main characters were Simon aka Lord Ravenscross, a charming, impossibly handsome, slightly rakish hero who had both caused and experienced heartbreak and Emmaline, a beautiful, kind, brilliant young woman with a secret whose reputation was compromised by disappointed expectations. They were unexpectedly torn apart by circumstances beyond their control and now, despite their love, they cannot be together due to family duty and finances. The amazing thing is that Emme responds with understanding and places the needs of her beloved ahead of her own when she offers to help him find a good wife. No spoilers here but trust me, you will want to see how this all works out. There were only a few kisses in this book but oh what kisses they were; this lady knows how to write kissing scenes—and the many longing, sometimes searing, glances made me appreciate why women were so dependent on their fans in Regency times. I hope this is just book one in a new series because there are a number of secondary characters I would love to see get their own stories beginning with Thomas, Emme’s cousin, or Ben, Simon’s somewhat jaded best friend. Highly recommend! I received an ARC from the publisher. All opinions expressed are strictly my own.

Loved this one! Pepper Basham is a great author,, writing historical fiction extremely well.
I enjoyed the “slow burn” romance in this story. Very descriptive of what was going on between our two main characters, both of whom I admired. And tied up with a sweet bow of conclusion!
I received this book from the publisher via net galley in exchange for an honest review. Five stars!
Emmeline Lockhart lived a quiet, sensible life as a gentleman’s daughter. Well, mostly sensible. In her free time, Emme writes swashbuckling tales of adventure, derring-do, and true love. Tales her beloved cousin, Thomas, convinced her to entrust to him so he could find a publisher. Not even her father, sister, or brother knew about her secret writing life. After all, novel writing could ruin a woman’s reputation faster than accepting an illicit kiss from a gentleman during a ball.
And Emme had once entrusted her heart to the wrong man—the nephew of a local viscount. The calm, imperturbable Emme had lost her heart to Simon Reeves, a confirmed flirt. Her shattered heart still mourns the relationship she thought she had. And, like any good novelist, Emme wrote Simon into the villain of her novels. It did little to assuage her hurt.
Three seasons later, her Aunt Bean arrives on the scene, determined to marry off Emme before the end of the season.
Simon Reeves, Lord Ravenscross, has returned to St. Grove. From the state of the estate he inherited from his uncle, Simon’s only recourse is to marry a wealthy woman. He no longer has the option of marrying a gentleman’s daughter. Even if Emme didn’t hate him for the way he’d acted the cad when he abandoned her on the night they were to announce their betrothal.
When his wealthy aunt arrives on the scene and offers a monthly stipend to keep his family solvent, Simon agrees—despite her caveat. By the end of the season, Simon must marry a ‘suitable’ woman. After a chance encounter with Emme, Simon realizes marrying just anyone would go against everything he believes in. Despite their history and Emme’s hostility, Simon knows he will never love another woman.
What I Loved About This Book
Instead of writing a Jane Austen knock-off (involving zombies or Austen’s characters later in life), Pepper Basham has written a beautiful Regency novel that parallels Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. Emme admires Austen’s books and discovers similarities between Austen’s characters and her own life. Basham bakes in lighthearted rom-com scenes, and the result is a tasty read for those who love Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer.
“How on earth was she going to survive an entire season with the possibility of seeing Simon Reeves at any moment?”
INSTANT HOOK, right?? This line perfectly sets the stage for the witty, swoony, second-chance romance that is Sense and Suitability by Pepper Basham!
In this clean Regency romance, a woman with a scandalous past (and an even more scandalous secret) swears off love—until the man who broke her heart needs her help. What could possibly go wrong? Filled with sharp banter, clever nods to Austen, adorable children, and yes, even a frog named 'Blast' (short for "Blast-It-All" lol)—this story delivers all the feels.
CAPS MY FRIENDS! THEY ARE A MUST FOR THIS BOOK. Is this one of my favorite reads of 2025? YES, IT IS!!! I started it during one of the busiest weeks ever and was so sad I couldn’t devour it in one sitting. IT’S THAT GOOD. By the time I finally sat down to read… let’s just say I stayed up way too late and finished it early the next morning. I am NOT one to sacrifice sleep—but this book? A TOTAL SLEEP STEALER, and completely worth it.
The romance is amazing. The family and side characters? ABSOLUTE PERFECTION. The banter, the swoony tension, the laugh-out-loud moments—it had it all. Pepper Basham’s books never fail me, but this one? EXCELLENT IN EVERY WAY.
This gem is available now!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
YOU NEED THIS BOOK IN YOUR LIFE. If you love historical romance with a fresh, contemporary feel—sweet, swoony, and utterly charming—Sense and Suitability will be your next favorite read.
Content/Trigger: a few religious exclamations, death of loved ones (off page), family relationships/ultimatums, romance–kisses only.
A heartfelt thank you to @pepperbasham @tnzfiction and @thomasnelson for the #gifted e-book, as well as the amazing #gifted audiobook.
This historical romance, elegantly set in the Regency era, captivates with its blend of heartfelt romance and sharp humor.
Emmeline and Simon's love story is simply enchanting. Their playful banter is not only delightful but adds a layer of depth to their connection. I particularly adored Aunt Bean and her entertaining etiquette lessons, as well as Aunt Agatha, whose gruff demeanor provided a delightful contrast. Simon's siblings brought an irresistible mix of charm, courage, and insight, enriching the narrative significantly.
Emmeline emerges as a fiercely independent character striving to navigate the stringent expectations placed on women of her time. Her unyielding love for Simon is heartwarming, yet her willingness to assist him and his family in finding the right governess and wife showcases her selflessness and strength.
The dual perspectives of Emmeline and Simon allow readers to intimately experience their struggles and triumphs as they navigate their relationship. The writing is truly exquisite.
The narrators excel in breathing life into each character, making us feel their emotions and longings profoundly.
If you cherish Regency-era romances filled with unforgettable characters and witty dialogue, this book is a must-read.

Is There Any Genre Basham CAN’T Write?
Not a super-strict regency romance, so if that is important to you, just know that going in. However, it was much more “regency-esque” than I expected. The overall practicalities, dependence on wealth and social rules governing suitability, that prevent a love match to marry, were paramount in this story. Although its plot is its own telling, the longing of lost love as depicted in Austen’s S&S was expertly captured and evident throughout this story.
The whole band of characters have their own unique place in the storyline. Some you will love, some you will loathe and some will eventually grow on you. It is here that Basham continues to shine! Such differing personalities from young to old, yet they are all essential to the tale and, all but a few, bring their own endearments. (Every story needs some villains). The introduction of a chicken, a horse and a frog had me laughing so much I could barely read on! You will love those scenes!
And, yes, there is kissing. In Basham’s novels there is always kissing. Oh, my!
And nothing further.
Thank you.
All that being said—I am “all in” for the sequel!
The audiobook brings this novel to life using a male and female narrator for the Simon and Emme first person POVs. I believe this is my first introduction to these narrators and I thoroughly enjoyed listening.
This book is suitable for teens and older with no inappropriate intimate scenes and no bad language. I received this book from the author/publisher free of charge, with no expectation of a positive review. I also purchased the audiobook.
A Regency-era rom-com for fans of Jane Austen! Emme is a captivating protagonist, and the lovers to enemies to lovers storyline with Simon is perfectly delightful. The witty banter is spot-on, and the family dynamics seem realistic.
My only minor complaint is that the pacing would be improved if the novel were shorter.
Overall this is a fun read with lots of heart and laughs.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance e-galley; all opinions in my review are 100% my own.
This was such a sweet regency-era romance! It follows Emmeline, or Emme, and Simon, who almost ended up engaged two years prior to the beginning of the book. That all changed when Simon disappeared without a word to Emme, leaving her wondering what happened. When the story opens, Simon has returned and Emme now wants nothing to do with him. However, it's clear that both of them still have feelings for each other. As the story progresses, Emme learns the truth about why Simon disappeared two years prior and wants to help him when she learns he is in financial trouble with his family estate, even though it means helping him find a different bride. At the same time, she's hiding a secret of her own which, if discovered, could ruin any chance she has of finding a suitable husband for herself.
I loved the pacing of this story. It kept me guessing whether or not she and Simon would end up together or not. Plus, they're relationship was so sweet! And their banter was fantastic; Pepper does an amazing job with character banter. Both Emme and Simon felt real and complex.. Even the side characters were well written! If you're looking for a clean, regency-era rom-com, pick up this book! You will definitely enjoy it!

Sense and Suitability was such an entertaining story and was absolutely delightful to read! I greatly enjoyed the characters as well as the historical aspects of the story.
Sense and Suitability demonstrates a time when women were still under the control of men but were beginning to be recognized for the views and their thoughts were being considered. I really liked Emmeline’s humor and strength throughout the story. We find out that Emmeline is an author but has to write under a pen name and the related business aspects are overseen by her cousin. While we learn that her writing would most likely be viewed poorly by society, this knowledge allows readers to have further insight about the main character.
While harboring her secret career as an author, Emmeline must also contend with what is viewed as a somewhat damaged reputation along with the fact that she still remains unmarried. To further add to Emmeline’s situation, her aunt comes for a visit with one goal in mind: to find Emmeline a suitable husband. Emmeline never imagined that the man who broke her heart would return and completely change every view she had held of him since he left her. It is soon clear that their love for each other remains and they will have to carefully navigate the social and family challenges each faces. Is it possible that the challenges that tore them apart could be the very ones that bring them back together?
Sense and Suitability is entertaining, captivating, and overall enchanting. The characters are great, the story line is well-developed, and the humor will capture your attention. This is truly a wonderful story and one that I would highly recommend!
Thank you so much UpLit Reads, Pepper Basham, Thomas Nelson Fiction, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of Sense and Suitability.

I received an arc from NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
A forbidden love and miscommunication are big themes in this historical romance which I absolutely loved.
Emme and Simon were set to be engaged but at the last minute Simon backs out and breaks Emme’s heart. When Simon returns home and runs into Emme again both of them still have feelings for one another but their circumstances have changed and their love is forbidden. Can true love prevail in this case or will duty of position be imposed.
Loved Simon’s siblings and Emme’s sister and hope to hear their stories one day.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an audiobook copy.
This was so super cute! Definitely a play off of Sense and Sensibility (and I dare say a little Persuasion). It's not always my favorite when books are written with a dual point-of-view, but the narrators were different. I definitely preferred the female narrator--she was excellent!
If you're looking for a Jane Austen-esque cozy read, this is a great one!

Sense and Suitability, like all books by Pepper Basham, is full of wit and humor. I loved the setting of a Regency English countryside. Throw in a misguided Viscount with a crumbling inheritance, family problems and the need for a wealthy wife and you have the makings of a great story. Along comes Emmeline a country gentleman's daughter with little wealth, grand ideas and a scandolous secret to create havoc in the Viscounts already turbulant world. Just for fun add a villianess debutant, a friend with advice, a demanding aunt and the village vicar for a well written delightful story.
I highly recommend Pepper Basham's Sense and Suitability! So brew up a poot of tea, grab some biscuits and curl up for a delightful afternoon of pleasurable reading.
I was given a copy of Sense and Suitability with no expectations. All thoughts are my own.
This book was such a delight to read! I loved this Regency romance book and I really enjoyed the characters! I enjoyed seeing Simon’s growth and Emmeline’s strength and the side characters were fun. I appreciated the nods to Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, I feel like a lot of books use Pride and Prejudice as their inspiration so it was great to see another one of her books used.
This book focuses on forgiveness and choosing heart over duty and it’s filed with sweet/swoon worthy moments. If you love regency sweet romance books than I definitely recommend.
Thank you NetGalley, Pepper Basham, and Thomas Nelson fiction for sending me an eARC for a honest review.
Pepper Basham's humor has me reading fiction that I would normally pass up. Regency Sense and Suitability had me wishing for more romcoms in this era!
Secret author Emmaline is entering her 3rd social season after being left by a promised suitor two years prior. She does not have enthusiasm about the prospect of finding a husband, she only wished her promised one Simon had married her as promised. If not him, she is happy penning novels under a male pseudonym and making her own income. When Simon shows up at balls still needing a wife and her attempts to ignore him do not work, she finds way to help him find his match.
While I enjoyed Emmaline and Simon, it was the secondary characters of his siblings and both their aunts that had me laughing. The book gives the reader all the feels of a good romcom. Basham's followers won't be disappointed.
I had received a complimentary copy thanks to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley, but listened as an audible when published. Audiobook brought story alive more for me!
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 A Delightful Regency Romance!
I absolutely loved this book! A cute, witty, and a genuinely funny clean Regency romance. What more could a girl ask for?? 🌹
Emmaline and Simon’s relationship is just the sweetest! They both have their own personal issues they are trying to work through, which made the story feel more realistic. The side characters also add to the story in such a great way! Specifically the kids, they were absolutely adorable!❤️
I really enjoyed Basham’s writing style. Her use of time-appropriate language and references to Jane Austin really anchor you into the time period. 📖
I will say the one thing I disagree with is people calling this enemies-to-lovers. I think it’s hard to really have true enemies in a romance. At the start of the book, Emme and Simon definitely aren’t on good terms. However, I wouldn’t wouldn’t consider them enemies!
I would definitely recommend this book and will happily read more by Ms. Pepper Basham ✨
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I think I want to travel back in time to the regency era and attend a fancy ball as Emme's friend. She is so witty, so kind, so sure of herself and so gifted. I found pieces of myself in her throughout the entire story but especially in her struggle to use the gifts God gave her fully when society at large was so against her. And yet! She continued to do it with grace and poise. What an incredible journey woven into her story.
And dear misunderstood Lord Ravenscross. So much character. So much swoony scowls. So many siblings. 😂
The messy history, the unrequited love, the forbidden letters, and the deep, heartfelt "knowing" of finding the one that you belong with.
I could keep going but I feel like you should just read it and find out if you haven't read it yet. Sense and Suitability is well well worth staying up past bedtime and indulging in the sweet, humorous and perfectly wonderful journey of two very different people who somehow keep coming back to eachother.
Seriously, you need this book in your life.

I just discovered that I actually like Regency romances! Which is funny because one of my favorite series is The Infernal Devices and that was set in the early days too, so no wonder I loved this! This book was more a proper romance than a romcom actually, but I was giggling and kicking my feet the entire time! The story made me laugh, cry, and swoon all at once🤣🥹🥰 The two main characters have such incredible chemistry! I was rooting for them so much and their personalities were just so good. Especially Emme, she's just so charismatic, personable, kind and authentic. No wonder Simon fell for her. Both MCs were very admirable people, but I also want to shout out Emme's cousin, Thomas. I love him so much! The story's pacing was really good, it kept me interested all throughout, and the minor characters were also very likeable especially their siblings! Overall I'm so happy to have read this and I have this genre to add to my most fave list now.
However, I probably should have read Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility before reading this, there were a lot of references here that I probably didn't get. But I still was able to enjoy it despite that 😊
Pepper is always such a good writer! I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I always enjoy every one of Pepper’s books. I loved both of the MCs, and it was so beautifully written that it made me desire to go back and read Sense & Sensibility as well as Pride & Prejudice. It highlighted how romance isn’t heightened just during the kisses, but in small touches and words.
Lighthearted wit and humor with depth and a romance that was super swoony ♥️
Beautiful!
I love Pepper Basham’s books and this is no exception. A sweet regency, enemies to lovers, and so much more.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction | Thomas Nelson for this book. ~I was given this book and made no commitments to leave my opinions, favorable or otherwise~
All the stars for this darling story! Pepper Basham constantly wows me. Any genre she writes in is amazing. I was absolutely thrilled she wrote a Regency romcom. This book is such a love letter to Jane Austen & had me smiling, laughing, & swooning at the witty dialogue, heartfelt romance, lovely family dynamics, & the intriguing predicament the main characters find themselves in.
Emmeline Lockhart’s embarking on her third season with not much hope in sight, until Simon Reeves, the man who broke her heart & left without a word, returns. Emmeline, though, has a scandalous secret. She’s become a successful author which would ruin her reputation if discovered. So while she’s participating in the Season, she’s determined she doesn’t need a husband. While her feelings for Simon are still simmering beneath the surface, she does not want to get her heart broken again. But, the charming man appears at every turn. His circumstances have changed greatly & though he now has a title, he’s in desperate need of funds, & a wife with a sterling reputation.
Though Simon’s still in love with Emmeline, he has to think of his young siblings & crumbling estate. Emmeline offers friendship, but can he be satisfied with only that when she seems to fit him & his family so well. Torn between duty & love, will he be the Willoughby, Edward, or Colonel Brandon of the story, or his own special brand of hero?
I loved this book! I loved how it had elements of Sense and Sensibility, but was also completely unique. Emmeline & Simon are both such honorable characters, each trying to do what’s right in a difficult situation. I adored Emmeline’s interactions with Simon’s siblings who tend to run wild across the estate, stealing chickens, capturing frogs, & finding all manner of mischief. Simon definitely has his hands full, but is such a loving big brother.
The romance was a rollercoaster of emotion. I couldn’t wait to see how everything’d work out. The witty dialogue, charming characters, & sweet romance captured my heart. Loved every moment! Can’t wait for more!
I received an advanced copy from the publisher with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are my own & provided voluntarily.

I don’t usually read romance stories anymore, but I decided to give this one a go, and what a pleasure it was to read. It had humour, sadness that almost brought me to tears, romance and family. The characters were all wonderfully written with warmth, heart and some very sad lost people. I found it very hard to put down, wanting to know how they were going to work it all out. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to the next one. There was no sex or talk of it, which made this book even more enjoyable for me. I received this as an ARC from Netgally and freely give my review.
This was such a fun yet heartfelt regency romance. Emmeline is strong, witty, and not afraid to bend the rules for a woman in her time. I loved her secret life as an author and how she stood her ground even when everyone around her had other plans. Simon broke her heart once, but he had his reasons and now he’s doing everything he can to hold his family together.
They both still have feelings for each other, but money, reputation, and expectations make things complicated. Will he follow his heart or his duty? 👀
It had just the right mix of charm, humor, and emotion and I absolutely loved every page!
Sense and Suitability is a fun, easy to read regency novel, with a nod to Sense and Sensibility. The characters are sweet...well, most of them, anyway. Basham always does an excellent job of adding a bit of wit and humor to the near-chaos.
It's fun to watch the interchanges between Emme and Simon. The siblings add a lot of interest to the story, too.
If you enjoy clean regency romance on a rom-com level, then you will certainly want to read Sense and Suitability.

The main plot in this clean (no smut) Regency Era book is that a woman has her heart broken by a man 2 years prior and then he comes back into her life and needs help and she decides that she can help him out without stirring old feelings. This was the perfect Jane Austen-style novel. It had humor, pining, quirky characters, difficulties to surpass, and the ending that you wish for from the very start. I loved these characters and just felt a smile on my face while reading this book. If you love Jane Austen novels you will love this book! If I had one criticism it would be that I do think it could have been a tad shorter and edited down a smidge. Sometimes the story felt a bit repetitive but overall I truly loved my time with this book and highly recommend it! Thanks so much to NetGalley for my advanced digital copy!
Love lost!
Only Emmeline Lockhart, Gentleman’s daughter with no dowry to speak of, could turn heartache into something else.
When she waited in the garden for Simon Reeves to propose, nephew to the Viscount of Ravenscross, little did she know that he’d left her after penning a short note.
Emme is devastated and retreats to her home in St Groves to heal and write. Would that the healing would happen! The writing certainly is.
Stranger things do happen, especially whilst she’s visiting a distraught widow on behalf of her cousin Thomas, the local vicar.
Emme certainly didn’t expect to meet Simon, now Viscount Ravenscross, after she’d chased a young child on a rather fast horse. A girl she’d spied dragging a sack onto the back of her horse replete with the widow’s stolen chickens.
Nor did she expect to be precipitously thrown over her own horse’s head into a pond only to be rescued by said Viscount.
Simon has inherited not only the title, but guardianship of his three wild, younger siblings. Simon must marry—someone with an impressive dowry. His estates are near bankruptcy.
A second chance romance, witty and endearing that brings laughter, angst and joy!

"Emmeline Lockhart's life teemed with secrets. Too many secrets for a country gentleman's daughter, but at least it made her parochial life a little more exciting. Her smile tipped. Very well--a lot more exciting" (location 85). I thought this was a great way to start the novel...the promise of secrets just waiting to be revealed.
I enjoy takeoff stories so you know generally where things are heading. This one was well written and enjoyable. Like Austen, Basham is great with witty writing and dialogue. I loved the conversations between Simon and Emme...even when they were somewhat estranged, their personalities shown through. It was delightful.
The lessons on how to catch a husband were hysterical. I laughed right along with Aster and Emme. I've always been interested in the Regency era and find the customs fascinating. I'm glad not to have an overbearing aunt though!
This is a fun read. I'd highly recommend it. Thank you to Thomas Nelson for providing me with a free e-copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Sense and Suitability by Pepper Basham was an absolute joy from beginning to end. The audiobook swept me right into the story with its charming narration and vivid characters. Basham has such a gift for blending humor, heart, and faith in a way that feels both timeless and fresh. I loved the witty banter, the warmth of the family dynamics, and the beautifully developed romance that honors Jane Austen’s classic spirit while standing confidently on its own.
The narrator’s performance truly brought the characters to life and made the story sparkle even more — it was the perfect companion for long drives and quiet evenings alike.
Huge thanks to NetGalley, the author Pepper Basham, and the publisher for the opportunity to enjoy this wonderful audiobook. I adored every minute of it and can’t wait to listen to more from this talented author!

I can't believe I'm just now writing this review! I read it in July on my way to Europe for the first time (highly recommend reading a regency book on the way to Europe by the way!) and I LOVED it. I originally was going to give it four stars - just because of the slightly old-fashioned verbiage that made it a little bit harder to follow, but did feel fitting to a regency book - but I have regularly thought about how much I loved the book since reading it, so I decided to give it a 5 star rating instead.
I had never read a Pepper Basham book or a regency book, but I loved both and plan to read both again! I originally was interested in this book because I heard good things about Pepper Basham and I thought the cover was soooo pretty. I definitely judge books by their covers! So, when I got the advanced copy and was headed to England, it seemed like the perfect time to read it!
I thought the book was so entertaining, engaging, sweet, and attention keeping. I enjoyed Emme and Simon's relationship/dynamic. The fact that they both wanted to be together so much, but didn't think that they could/should, was so good! Not in the sense that they were both mistaken, but in the tension and storytelling that it brought. I just wanted them to be together so badly! And, you know, happy ever after and all - they get to be in the end. I wanted to read chapter after chapter though to see what happened. It helped my 8+ hour flight to Europe go by much more quickly and when I arrived, honestly, I just wanted to keep reading!
Highly recommend if you like clean reads, regency (or want to give it a try - like me!), second chance romance, sweet romantic tension, wanting them to end up together on every page, loving both characters, and a happily ever after. Extremely recommend if you are headed to Europe and need a book to get you in the England vibes and kill time on the flight!
Thank you NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the opportunity to read this book in advance! It made my vacation that much sweeter. AND I am excited to buy my own paper back copy!

Thank you to NetGalley, Thomas Nelson Fiction and Pepper Basham for sharing this ARC with me, in exchange for my honest review.
Sense & Suitability has bewitched me heart and soul. This book is such a cozy/comfy, sweet read. Simon and Emme's friendship and relationship is swoon-worthy. Their chemistry is undeniable. I instantly fell in love with Emme. The way Ms. Pepper wove together this story and Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility is so delicious.
If y'all love Regency Romance mixed with just the right amount of chaos, then this is the book for y'all.
I truly recommend this book to all y'all.
Pepper Basham has another hit with this book! The banter, the wit, the natural human response to pressure and love, the setting: everything breathes life into this wonderful story. Delightful from beginniing to end, I was sad when the book finished and I had to "say goodbye".
The characters bring a depth to this story that have them walking off the pages and into your room for a chat and advice. The regency era setting lends backbone to this amazing tale. A storng and independent female main character during this etting is so fun to read. Keeping everyone (even readers) on their toes, what will happen next? The romance was heart warming and the perfect amount to match the story.
Pepper Basham has again demonstrated her prowess as a master storyteller, with clean romance and characters that stay with the reader well after the book is done. I highly recommend this book. The late nights to get through this delightful tale are very worth it! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Sense and Suitability was an absolutely delightful regency read. I just fell in love with Emme right away and truly enjoyed her character. I wasn’t sure about that Simon, much like Emme herself, but he grew on me more and more throughout the story and I came to appreciate him, I think, far better gradually than if I had loved him instantaneously. The entire secondary cast are absolute gems- except that horrid Serena- and everyone from sweet little Fia to blunt Aunt Agatha made this story shine on each page.
This is a romcom, yes, but a bit more subdued than Basham’s other romcom from 2025, Some Like it Scot, which had me literally snorting and laughing out loud. But the humor in Sense and Suitability was perfection in a different way. Aunt Bean is positively, over-the-top awful in the best of ways. Her “lessons” definitely had me sputtering in laughter. Fia and Lottie’s antics were unquestionably one of my favorite parts of this story. While we all showed up for the laughs, Basham also brings the angst because Emme and Simon’s situation seems truly impossible. I had no idea exactly how things were going to turn around to bring us our happily ever after.
Trademark swoony kisses, delightful side characters, and a hero and heroine worth rooting for make this a story I’d certainly read again. I flew through the pages and really enjoyed my excursion to Ravenscross.
Do not be concerned about reading this if you’ve never read Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. I’ve read a lot of Austen’s novels, but Sense and Sensibility is one of those I just never got to. And while I’m sure I missed some references, my limited knowledge of Sense and Sensibility was no hardship during my read. I never felt like I was missing anything.
Do yourself a favor and grab Sense and Suitability if you like…

I received a complementary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. I was not asked to leave a positive review. My opinions are my own.
Sense and Suitability has banter and swoon, yet we get depth into the characters' struggles, too. The angst of characters who love each other, yet society dictates they can't be together, just broke my heart. Tears were shed.
There are characters to love and a few you won't. Family relationships, friendship, forgiveness, and growth made this end with a happy sigh from me.
I listened to the audio, and it is well done!
I re-read the book and got so much more from it! It's a wonderful story and improved upon re-reading!
I received an early copy from NetGalley and the publisher. Opinions are my own.
I love me a good “retelling”, and Pepper Basham has knocked this one out of the proverbial park with her usual grace and charm. Emmeline once held hope that Simon would be her forever, but instead she was left alone at their rendezvous with no explanation. Years later, he returns to a tarnished title and a crumbling estate with siblings to support. The only resolution is that he must marry well. Emmeline has put her heartbreak to good use and is essentially self-sufficient, but Simon needs a substantial dowry to make his home fit for habitation. It’s clear that she is not the kind of wife he needs to seek—if only someone could tell that to his heart! Sense & Sensibility lovers will marvel at the parallels where familiar characters, themes, and settings will emerge, but all wit a fresh new perspective. Never read the original? You won’t miss a beat! The banter (OH, THE BANTER!), hilarious antics (especially of Simon’s littlest sister Fia) and a sweeping romance will keep you coming back for more. The audiobook version is impeccable, and I loved every second of it! I received an advance copy from the publisher & was under no obligation to provide a positive review.

I love love love Emme and Simon! This was such a fun read. Dual POV which I think made this book so good. Both loved the other person so much they were willing to sacrifice their own happiness for the other person. Emme wanted to protect her heart and her writing. Simon wanted to protect his family and estate. Simon's younger siblings made me laugh out loud so many times. I would love Will's story and Charlotte's ... crossing fingers for this to become a series.
Hard to believe this is Pepper's first time to write a regency novel. Great read!

Summary:
This novel centers on Emmeline Lockhart, a young woman who, after a heart-wrenching rejection, resolves to remain single and pursue her secret career as a successful, yet unnamed, novelist. Two years later, the man who shattered her heart, Simon Reeves, returns as a viscount, burdened with debt and in desperate need of a wealthy bride. Despite her lingering feelings for Simon, she agrees to help him find a suitable heiress who could stabilize his family’s finances and rescue his siblings. As Simon and Emmeline spend more time together, their suppressed love for each other resurfaces, creating a romantic tension that threatens to disrupt Emmeline's matchmaking plans. This novel beautifully portrays the theme of love and redemption, suggesting that no matter how tumultuous and intricate a love story may be, it is always worth the risk of rewriting, leaving Simon torn between financial necessity and genuine affection.
Review:
This novel has proved to be a genuinely great second-chance romance, hooking me from the opening pages. Pepper Basham masterfully navigates the tension of revisiting a past heartbreak while introducing the story with charm and depth. The Regency setting is not simply the background; it's not the engine of the central conflict. The story exquisitely captures the era's harsh economic realities, particularly how title and status depended on wealth and suitability.
Simon Reeves needs a wealthy, reputable bride due to inheriting a title, an estate in disrepair, and overwhelming debt. This social pressure is what drives him to ponder sacrificing love for financial survival. On the other hand, Emmeline Lockhart faces a ton of scrutiny for being a woman entering the third social season without a husband, despite her family's wishes. Her career as an accomplished anonymous author is presented as a scandalous secret, shedding light on women's independence and financial success, which were seen as a threat to conventional suitability—the stakes of their romance intensify as the era's heartless demands for both fortune and propriety.
I wasn't a fan of Simon Reeves at first; the beginning portrayed him as a rake whose selfish actions caused significant pain. The journey of redemption is one of the book's highlights. His character growth was compelling, specifically when he took genuine accountability for his past mistakes, transforming him into a hero worth rooting for. Emmeline Lockhart was such a well-crafted character. Her secret life as a writer gave her an intriguing layer of independence and ambition that contrasted sharply with the social expectations of the Regency era. I admired her personality, specifically the endearing sprinkle of quirkiness that made her relatable and memorable. The romance between Emmeline and Simon wasn't simply beautiful; it was a genuine testament to the power of love to heal old wounds and motivate change.
Basham doesn't rush this romance, allowing the relationship to evolve from strained familiarity to deep affection. Besides Simon and Emmeline, I appreciated the portrayal of the founding family. The bond between Simon and his siblings was lovely and heartfelt. This novel is written in an engaging way that blends the classic charm of historical romance with emotional depth. Honestly deserves more recognition and is a must-read for those seeking a clean, compelling historical romance that emphasizes both healing and love.
Sense and Suitability is a heartwarming Regency romance. I loved meeting Emmeline and Simon, as well as all of their respective sibling. This book is sweet and funny with enjoyable characters and the little bit of chaos thrown in makes it even better.
I was provided a copy of the book from the author/publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

Although I had heard a lot about Pepper Basham, I hadn’t read her work until I picked up Sense and Suitability. A five-star read, this wonderful novel put her on my short list of favorite authors. This book was the perfect choice for me, hitting so many personal chords that my heart could not help but swoon from the intimacy. Basham’s talent in handling the exquisite homage to Jane Austen’s novel, Sense and Sensibility, instantly brought to mind all the delightful details of the beloved book, illuminating similarities without overshadowing the story she was telling.
The main characters in this book, Simon and Emmeline, were worthy of an Austen romance. Clever humor and witty banter, along with the constraints of society, beautifully weave together the story’s literary tapestry. Romantic frustration, manipulative propriety, and financial strain also thread the plot with tension that renders the narrative unpredictable.
I adored all the layered characters, from hero Simon with his need for maturity to Emmeline and her secretive writing endeavors, to all the antics of side characters like the siblings and meddling aunts. Flavorful, fun, and deliciously sweet, this story had the power to draw me into its world from the opening pages. Any fan of Regency romance will truly enjoy this book.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher but was not required to leave a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Thank you to Pepper Basham, Thomas Nelson Fiction, and NetGalley; I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I loved this story between Emmeline and Simon! I enjoyed their banter, and how Emmeline was always getting into some "trouble"! It's a second chance, family antics, and of course the Know-it-all aunt Bean who gave lady lessons to Emmeline and her sister. It was definitely entertaining.
I was able to read this and listen to it as well. The narrators did well. While the way narration is set up, where they speak each other's lines within their own chapters, aren't my super favorite, they still did a great job and I would recommend this audiobook.
I was listening to this while gardening as I imagined myself peering into the soul of this book and it was a nice escape into the regency era.
It was a funny, heartwarming, cozy regency romance... I couldn't ask for more from a clean read. Perfect as a palette cleanser between heavy or dark reads.
Sense and Suitability was a wonderful story that I had to slow myself down reading because I didn’t want it to end. Emme was so witty having me laughing out loud. The story warmed my heart with love and doing what’s best for family. Recommend read. I received a complimentary copy of this book and the opinions are my own. Thank you #netgalley and #pepperbasham for the honor to read and review.
Sense and Suitability was exactly the cozy Regency rom-com I needed. It’s sweet, funny, a little chaotic in the best way, and full of characters I genuinely didn’t want to let go of.
Emmeline and Simon have an adorable second-chance, slow burn chemistry going on after he disappeared years ago, he’s now suddenly back as a newly minted viscount with too many problems and not nearly enough money. Emmie helps him search for a wealthy bride even though the two of them are very much not over each other. Cue the swoony moments, sharp banter, awkward longing, and lots of cute familial interactions.
I loved Emmie she’s witty and so kind and Simon’s redemption really worked for me. His siblings, Aunt Bean’s unhinged lessons, and even the grumpy Aunt Agatha had me smiling constantly. The side characters were so charming I’d honestly read books about all of them.
This was my first Pepper Basham novel, and I’m officially hooked. It’s super charming, and perfect if you love Regency romance with humor, banter, and second chances.
I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book is an adorable Regency romance that can be read in one go. The story starts with Emmeline Lockhart entering her third social season determined to avoid romance, especially after Simon Reeves vanished from her life without explanation. Now a secretly successful author with no interest in marriage, Emme agrees to help Simon when he returns with his estate in ruins and his siblings out of control, seeking not only a suitable bride but also her friendship. But as old chemistry sparks, she begins to wonder if some love stories are worth a second chance.
The characters are developed wonderfully, and the author has masterfully infused them with all the right emotions and humour. The chemistry between the two main characters is heartwarming, and despite being a slow-burn romance, the story remains engaging throughout. I also loved the references to Jane Austen, which added charm without distracting from the main plot.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sweet, heartfelt, Austen-inspired romances.
