*What Happens When I Have Anxiety and Depression?* by Emiliya King is a thoughtful and gentle guide that addresses the symptoms of both anxiety and depression. The book explains that these feelings may or may not have an obvious trigger and can affect both the mind and body. It encourages children to reach out to their parents if their feelings persist for two weeks or longer and emphasizes that if they are told they are "fine" but continue to feel unwell, they should insist that something is wrong. The book also covers the diagnosis process with a doctor and discusses both medicinal and therapeutic treatments, explaining their potential effects.
One of the standout features of this book is the inclusion of several full-color photos showing children expressing various emotions, along with caring adults offering comfort and support. These images are a wonderful addition that make the content even more relatable and comforting for young readers. The book wraps up with coping strategies and reinforces the important message that there is nothing wrong with the child experiencing these emotions, they are not alone and can work through the tough times.
As someone who has dealt with mental health struggles since childhood, I truly believe that resources like this could have been incredibly helpful to me during my younger years. It is wonderful to see that children today have more opportunities to learn about and discuss their feelings openly. I would give this book 5 out of 5 stars, and I consider it a vital addition to any school library or pediatric waiting room. I received an advanced reader copy from NetGalley and Rosen Publishing Group.

I loved this book for a 3-5 classroom. The information was accessible and the glossary was perfect. This went over the basics of anxiety and depression for students. I can see this helping students understand themselves and their peers better because of this book.

I'm happy to see more works like this available for children, especially as part of a series of books about mental health. This is a subject that can sometimes be difficult to broach with children, yet that is necessary due to the increase in the number of youth with mental health diagnoses. The language is clear and age appropriate without being simplistic, breaking down depression and anxiety into simple terms that explain how they work and affect both the mind and the body. There is a reassuring and gentle tone throughout the book; children are reminded that they are important and that their conditions don't make them any less lovable or worthy. I appreciated the emphasis on using positive words and reframing their thinking to help keep negative intrusive thoughts at bay. The book also does a very good job of making the distinction between general worry or sadness and depression, stressing that the latter is categorized by persistent feelings. This book works well as one that children can read on their own as well as with a trusted adult. I could also see it used in a child therapist's office as a resource, where they can expand on techniques used to help center and calm them. And I can see it as a good addition to a library's nonfiction section, used in conjunction with similarly themed books.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher, Power Kids Press (Rosen Publishing Group) for this DRC in exchange for a fair and honest review. The thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
What Happens When I Have Anxiety and Depression? is a non-fiction book for children, which explains in a sensitive and reassuring way what anxiety and depression are, the symptoms and signs, and who and where to turn to for help.
This is an encouraging book for anyone who suffers with either/both anxiety and depression and for others to understand and be more mindful of what both terms are and mean. There's full colour photographs on each page, making it more understandable and reassuring and a glossary at the back to explain the meaning of words and terms used within the book.
This would be a great book to broach going to see a doctor, therapist, etc, with your child as well as help them feel less confusion, more understood, seen, and heard.
.
As a parent of a child who suffers with anxiety and have anxiety and depression myself too, this book is perfect for my child and I will be getting a physical copy to share with her that she can keep and refer back to whenever she wants or needs to. So many children suffer with both anxiety and depression these days due to many factors and more support, awareness and understanding is definitely needed.
