This book is an absolute must-have for anyone who dreams of starting a flower garden. It truly transforms what can feel like an overwhelming project into an accessible and welcoming experience. The author's guidance makes the process feel so encouraging and even therapeutic, turning gardening into a peaceful, mindful practice rather than a chore. The Beginner’s Cut Flower Garden
by Elizabeth Brown really impressed me. It’s about more than just growing cut flowers, it’s inspiration. The quotes woven throughout the book from An Island Garden by Celia Thaxter make it unique. And of course, now I need to go find that book and read it! Thank you to the author for writing a book I truly wanted to read!

Elizabeth Brown explains things in a way that feels easy and encouraging, with helpful seasonal tips and gorgeous photos for inspiration. I especially loved the ideas for year-round color and companion planting. The High Season Observations are particularly useful for any gardener..
This is a great starting point for beginners and a beautiful resource for any gardener.

This is a very useful book for all kinds of gardeners, not only those who are strictly growing cut flowers. I think it's so helpful to consider the size and scope of a garden, how much sun and water a plant needs, and how to rotate crops throughout the seasons. I was inspired to think differently about native plants in cut flowers, and have been enjoying adding false aster and goldenrod to my bouquets. I also was inspired to try some of the more practical tips such as getting a soil sample.

The pictures are clear, bright, and beautiful to look at. The text is insightful and provides good guidance. I highly recommend this book for libraries, garden clubs, and university extension programs.

This book is beautiful - lushly photographed with thorough, practical advice. Information is presented in an easy to understand manner. Even dividing and storing dahlia tubers is demonstrated in a way a beginner (or advanced!) gardener could easily follow. I loved the inclusion of native plant varieties, how to incorporate them and appreciate their beauty in the flower garden.

Elizabeth Brown has written an original gardening guide that combines her experience as a gardener and a practitioner of therapeutic horticulture. With striking, high quality photos and calming yet informative prose, "The Beginner's Cut Flower Garden" leads the beginning (and experienced) gardener to plan a cutting garden that matches the space, time, growing conditions, and knowledge they have available. Brown's instructions follow the seasons: Winter planning leads to Spring planting followed by Summer harvesting and closing with Autumn reflection. Reflection, however, isn't limited to the Autumn, and Brown suggests taking the time to reflect and be present while doing all gardening tasks. The garden and gardening activities become a meditation of the beauty and rhythms of nature.

Even though I've been gardening for decades, I found myself making lists of flowers I want to grow, planning a new cutting bed, and taking notes for creating flower arrangements.

Brown's book is an excellent resource for people who are just beginning to think about planting a garden and for those who want to add a cutting garden to an existing space.

Thank you to Timber Press for providing an ARC via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Guide to growing flowers for cutting and displaying in vases, bouquets, etc with some tips for living well sprinkled in. If you just want a guide to flowers, skip this book. If you will appreciate a conversation woven throughout the chapters about gardening with intention, trying to be present, and mental health, this is your book.

I got so many ideas for my garden, I think I might feel brave enough to try putting in some bulbs for spring!! One thing I would have liked is if the filler photos (transitions, chapter divides, etc) labeled the flowers shown.

Thanks to NetGalley for the free copy, all opinions are my own.

This is a beautiful book with incredible photos. Even though the photos are beautiful the book is still giving this relatable feeling and inspiring the possibility to create the garden and the flowers yourself.

The book is what the title say, a beginners book, that covers all steps you need to know to create a cut flower garden and how you take care of the harvest without going in too much depth at every step.

If you like me are a little more experienced gardener this might be a too much beginners book. But I still find som tips and tricks to take with me. I especially liked the tips on how you can plan your seedlings, succession planting and the constent reminders to be present and mindful in the garden and follow the seasons also mentally!

This book was so informative and beautiful! The photography was stunning and a treat to look at. The author was so thorough in describing which steps to take in each season to prepare, plant, and tend the garden, with the added treat at the end of the book of teaching many different things that can be done with the flowers besides making bouquets. I learned so much and I’m excited to start my own flower gardens in the spring. I definitely would like to own a hard copy of this book.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ebook in return for my opinion.

Elizabeth Brown's Thee Beginner's Cut Flower Garden is full of inspirational yet obtainable goals and information. This book is an excellent guide for novices looking for a dreamy confidence boost. This book provides readers with the space to imagine, plan, and prepare a first garden with an eye toward the journey being as rewarding as the giftable bouquets at the end. In fact it prepares the reader for the cyclical bounty of seasons in harvesting flowers as well as seeds.

The Beginner's Cut Flower Garden is absolutely splendid! I am a flower farmer, also fruit and vegetables but flower farming is my jam so I have a lot of experience and when I opened this book I knew it wasn't going to be basic. I love the format, font, writing and especially the thoughtful personal reflections by Elizabeth Brown.

What is lovely about this book is the format, how it's laid out in way that is great for beginners but truly it's for everyone interested in having a flower garden because Elizabeth gets into the weeds of the joy of where having a flower garden can lead to the many joys of what to do with cut flowers and how to be successful.

It's a great journey in opening up a lot of great information that will help the gardener not just in growing flowers but in growing great soil. She also teaches the importance of growing organically, building soil health and sustainability all the things that put this book over the top for me.
Absolutely five stars.

Timber Press has become such a favorite in bringing such great books into the world of home and garden. Their eye for finding the varied interests and making high quality books makes me search them out time and time again.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Timer Press and Elizabeth Brown for the opportunity to read and review The Beginner's Cut Flower Garden.
An absolute joy.

I love everything about this book. The photography is beautiful, as are the illustrations and everything else about this.

I like that it’s set up by season so you know what to do when with tips for in ground gardens and various containers as well. It covers supplies needed, how to source bottle and things for display, and where to get plants.

I also love that we get kitchen uses for some things, warnings on toxicity, and projects like using flowers to dye fabric. There are also suggestions for really being present in your garden and prompts to note observations as it grows.

I don’t have the space for gardening much right now but I would love to have a beautiful extensive flower garden someday and would absolutely use this as a resource for getting started.

The Beginner”s Cut Flower Garden is both beautiful and comprehensive. If you know someone who gardens, especially someone starting out, this is the book to get them. I agree with another reviewer who noted that this is a great book for gardeners, whether they’re into cut flowers or not. There are so many wise tips in here. Clearly well-tested too. I loved the crafting ideas (pressed flowers are so lovely) and the kitchen ones too (edible decoration).

My favorite section was when to pick your flowers. Next year, a few of my tulips are coming inside with me now that I know I can cut them early. I also appreciated the planning part of this book. Sketching your space is such a smart move, as is identifying the directions. Oh, and the easy timelines she sets out. You can have a job and garden too. So many other books overlook this.

I found it interesting that the author doesn’t have a long history of gardening. Instead, she turned to gardening during COVID. She discovered the “practice of therapeutic horticulture” and the healing benefits of being outside in the garden and actually earned a certificate in the practice. It is her hope that the reader uses this as a “friendly guide to get yourself growing flowers and increasing joy and happiness in your life.”

In her Winter Gardening chapter she explains how to find your inspiration for your garden. Look at photos of flowers, create a wish list and plan. Explore your growing space. Think about the desired esthetics of your garden. What types of flowers, what color palette…? She provides photos of some flowers to consider and descriptions of commonly found garden flowers. Annuals? Perennials? Herbs? The discussion of starting flowers from seed takes several pages to provide you with some good ideas and guidance. Then she talks about designing your garden with some great tips.

In the Spring Gardening chapter, the author discusses tools, including some special ones needed if you plan to have a cutting garden. You can start small with containers or pots, raised beds, and elevated beds. She also discusses her favorite spring bulbs, shrubs, and planting seedlings.

In the Summer Gardening section, she covers cutting flowers and has a beginner’s guide to floral design. And the hard part of gardening, tending the garden, including dealing with pests. This can be the most rewarding time in gardening, but also frustrating. Saving seeds – one of the things I like to do, even though my garden is quite small these days. She describes using your garden bounty in the kitchen and using the garden to make dyes. This is also the season to observe and decide what works for you and what doesn’t.

And the Autumn – closing your garden, digging up tender bulbs, pressed flowers, forcing bulbs, etc.

This book is a great guide for beginners and for experienced gardeners who want to look at their gardens in a different way.

I received an early version of this book from the publisher and NetGalley.
