Description
Every year, campground manager Kate sends out a pamphlet titled “How to Survive Your Camping Experience.” It includes a list of rules to help campers have an enjoyable experience and hopefully survive any encounters with the campgrounds other…inhabitants.
With the campground in the throes of a bad year, it will take more than a list of rules to keep everyone safe. Monsters that were previously lying dormant are starting to stir and they’re waking up hungry. Among them is the Lady in Chains, a creature feared by both human and inhuman things alike.
Her reappearance creates an upheaval in the balance of power in the campground by renewing an old grudge with the harvesters, who are willing to sacrifice anyone they get their hands on in order to gain an advantage. On top of all this, the man with the skull cap has started taking an unusual interest in Kate. But with the harvesters on the prowl, the Lady in Chains hunting her down, and a sinister spider infestation, Kate is going to need all the allies she can get, even if those allies aren’t actually…human.

WARNING: THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR THE ARACHNOPHOBIC!
"HOW TO SURVIVE CAMPING: THE MAN WITH NO SHADOW is the best cozy horror I've read in years. Corpses? Sure. Gore? Yeah. But the vibe is convivial and welcoming, and the setting is glad you're here.... This book is what Gravity Falls would have been if it had been produced for Shudder, rather than the Disney Channel. It's the JOHN DIES AT THE END of pretty straightforward campground horror. It's the bonfire "on a night like this" book you've been waiting for." –Seanan MacGuire, New York Times bestselling author of The Wayward Children series

This series is so fantastic, I’m going to be collecting physical copies of all of them despite having already read them here. Sequels tend to suffer compared to the first book, and that is not the case here. If anything, this surpassed the expectations set by book 1! I’m very anxiously awaiting the rest of the series, fingers crossed it’s published soon!!!
A fantastic second installment in the How to Survive Camping series! Kate, her coworkers, and the inhuman inhabitants of the Goat Valley Campground are back in this cozy, funny, thrilling, and downright terrifying novel. While this one has the same signature writing style and compelling folklore of The Man With No Shadow, The Lady in Chains is a more cohesive narrative overall, with a stronger overarching story across the various inhuman encounters. I enjoyed the twists and turns, as well as the ever-present tension with the Man With the Skull Cup, and I can’t wait to see where this story goes in the third installment. Please note that this book may not be a good choice for those with severe arachnophobia; spiders play a significant role in this one.

I didn't realize this was the second in a series, but it didn't affect my reading of it much at all. This was a fun read! I enjoyed the pace of it and the enjoyed the ride, overall.
I didn’t realize there was a book before this one until after I had requested this. No matter, I still was curious to read it. I was immediately drawn into the book, and I really couldn’t tell this is the second in a series, so that was great. And, this book is so very interesting, too. The universe is unique, the characters are unique, and how everything plays out is unique. So, guess what?!? I thought this book was unique. LOL! Even though this book isn’t perfect, I really was fascinated by it and the characters in it. I’m hoping there will be more books in the series. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
i absolutely love this series!!! i had to drop everything once i got the approval for this book — i was so looking forward to it, and i tried (and failed) to savor it as long as possible. i’m already sad that it’s over, but i’m really looking forward to the fact that the next one in the series will also be out this year!
kate is an absolute delight to read about. i love the fact that there’s this ongoing battle within her between the fact that she wants to look after her campground while also having a good amount of disregard for the lives of stupid people. she spends all this time writing rules about how to stay alive when camping among all these monsters and dangers in the woods — but when people ultimately ignore her rules, half the time she’s much more worried about the fact that she has to clean this up than the fact that this person died. and i’m on her side! she warned them!
it was fun to see more of the campground’s lore come to the surface in the second book, as well as some of kate’s personal family lore. i feel like this series really excels at having centralized, “monster of the week” style bad guys within each book while also consistently developing overarching plots that take us through the series as a whole. i can’t wait to see where it takes us next!
