Description

A mouth-watering home run of a beach read, this lighthearted romantic comedy featuring a newly widowed fortysomething takes the reader on a joyful romp through-out some of Chicago’s finest eateries—with a dash of Cubs baseball on the side.

In the heart of Chicago, forty-five-year-old Angie Sortino finds herself at a crossroads. Recently widowed, she discovers that her deceased husband, Vinnie, has left her penniless. Until his City pension can be cleared up, she’s on her own.

Angie has just taken a job at Chicago City Hall as a cleaning woman when her spirited twenty-two-year-old niece, Gina, and Gina’s best friend, Kim, approach her with the idea of starting a catering company targeting funeral parlors. Seeing a chance to reawaken her own culinary aspirations, Angie gets on board. As the three women embark on this new venture, they face the challenges of the catering business, from securing clients to perfecting their menu. Angie and Gina’s love for the Chicago Cubs adds a playful twist to their journey; they often find inspiration in the vibrant atmosphere of Wrigley Field. Gina’s youthful enthusiasm, meanwhile, contrasts with Angie’s cautious nature, leading to hilarious mishaps, unexpected romantic encounters, and heartfelt moments.

Through late-night brainstorming sessions and spontaneous cooking experiments, Angie begins to find her voice, both in the kitchen and in her life—and ultimately, with the support of a respected funeral director, Gina and Kim, and an unexpected new love interest, she learns to embrace her worth and pursue happiness.

Last Bite is exactly the kind of lighthearted, refreshing read I look for in a romantic comedy. It delivers a perfect blend of genuine heart, laugh-out-loud humor and most importantly truly mouth-watering food descriptions. Angie's journey to reclaim her life and her voice, spurred on by her enthusiastic niece Gina and their unique catering venture (catering to funeral parlors!), is pure gold. The chemistry between the three women is the beating heart of the story, contrasting Angie's cautious nature with Gina's vibrant youthful energy, which sets the stage for hilarious mishaps and heartwarming breakthroughs. The Chicago backdrop is beautifully rendered, especially the descriptions of the city's eateries and the dash of Cubs baseball fandom, which adds a charming local flavor. While the romance with the funeral director is a delightful slow burn, the real draw is watching Angie find her culinary aspirations and personal confidence again.Perfect for fans of food-centric novels and those who love a witty, uplifting story about finding joy and connection later in life. Highly recommended as a perfect beach or weekend read!

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this arc!Last Bite by Amy S. Peele was such a fun and clever read with a really cute premise. I especially enjoyed the playful references to Bill Murray—they added such a quirky, lighthearted touch that made me grin throughout the story.

One of the highlights for me was seeing Angie gain her confidence and independence back. Watching her growth added a heartwarming layer that balanced nicely with the mystery.

That said, I do wish the ending had wrapped things up a little more fully. I was left wondering what really happened with Mario and the missing bank documents—those loose ends felt like they could have given the conclusion more impact.

Even so, this was an engaging and entertaining mystery that felt fresh, fun, and memorable. A great pick if you’re looking for something different with both charm and heart.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this book! I will say I am pleasantly surprised at how much i enjoyed this book, as it is out of my usual category.

In this feel-good novel, Angie is forced to reinvent her life after her husband’s death. Along with many friends and family members, she is able to help others do the same. You watch her transform from a meek lady to someone who can stand her ground. I found all the characters (minus a few of course) very endearing which added to the story. Also, the catering business is so clever and even comical. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy a feel-good book and need a comforting story.

This book has it all! Food, baseball and a mid-life trip all in one package. Angie is a recently widowed 45-year-old who joins up with her besties to form a catering business. The way the author weaves in baseball and food along with female relationships, really was a homerun!

This is a good comeback story about reinventing yourself and reconnecting with yourself after a tragedy. Angie is feeling stuck after her husband dies. But when her niece asks her to help with her new catering company she takes the chance. She realizes how much she loves to cook and finds herself thriving.
This was a good look at finding yourself again. And a fun look at Chicago too.

Thanks NetGalley for this ARC.
