Description
Now you see her.. Now she's dead
When Angel, the wife of magician Dex Devereaux, mysteriously vanishes on a live TV talent show, journalist and wannabe investigator Clare Deyes cannot resist trying to work out what happened. But a week later, when Angel reappears dead during the show’s next round, Clare is certain she is out of her depth.
Clare soon realises only one person can help: the brilliant, brittle Mara Knight - magic consultant, psychologist and wife of the world famous illusionist Travers - whose husband’s disappearance is still unexplained.
Can Clare and Mara together solve the puzzle of Angel’s death before the talent show’s live final, when they are sure someone close to Angel has something even more extreme planned?
---
The Sherlock Holmes stories meet Jonathan Creek in this fast-paced, twisty mystery with a generous peppering of pathos and humour. Perfect for fans of Richard Osman and Elly Griffiths, The Magician’s Wife is the first in a brand new series from internationally published author (and real-life magician’s wife) Lora Jones.
Advance Praise
"slickly worked, just like a brilliant magic trick ...a refreshingly new perspective on the illusionist-turned-investigator-style mystery"
Jamie West, author of Death on the Pier
“This is a wonderful magical mystery. The way the magic is intertwined into this gripping story is superb and it’s such a fun read. It kept me guessing the solution all the way through and I didn’t see the ending coming at all. I can’t wait to see what impossible crimes Mara and Clare try to solve in the future.”
Kat Hudson, professional magician (Britain’s Got Talent and Penn & Teller: Fool Us)

A brilliant new mystery series touted as Sherlock Holmes meets Jonathan Creek and that’s not too far off the mark.
Mara Knight is an outstanding, if spiky, genius whose husband was a world-class illusionist right up until he disappeared without trace. Now she is a magic consultant to the police and a psychologist as well as being incredibly dogged and plain rude at times. She reels in down at heel journalist Clare Deyes to work with her to investigate the disappearance of a talent show magician’s assistant.
I absolutely loved the quick wit and the pace of this novel, not to mention the twisty, clever plotting. I cannot wait for further books from the author, who herself is the wife of a magician. Brilliant and highly enjoyable.
My thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley. This review was written voluntarily and is entirely my own unbiased opinion.
Terrific characters and a knack for witty dialogue make for an immersive read. The mystery itself is a fun one to try and solve and following its resolution was very satisfying. The characters are really engaging so I am thrilled to hear this is one of a series.
