There's a sense the book puts the race issues and adult language on to be controversial, to goad the passing reader away. What's more successfully off-putting is the unattributed dialogue, and the similarity in character (certainly the passage of time since the first issue came out means I have less than the ideal idea of who's who and how and why). But the thing looks like ending up a great story, and the mystery of the titular prison inmate is one to make this a mature and gutsy adult comic.
