Description

Read by the author.

They've come for a birthday celebration . . . but they'll leave celebrating themselves.

Moira Allyson is going all out for her 50th birthday. The planning part is easy--in her big, beautiful mansion set on Savannah's waterfront, perfect parties practically plan themselves. She'll serve the region's finest cuisine, offer delicious drinks, book the best entertainment, and set up luxurious spa treatments for a small group of the most important women in her life--from childhood best friends to the woman who cleans her house.

She may be focused on her friends, but Moira's focus has a purpose--distracting herself from the lonely reality of her life as a widow and empty nester. Her twentysomething sons don't really come back to visit anymore, and her husband, the love of her life, is gone forever. Moira may appear to have it all on the outside, but there's way too much room in her home . . . and way too many memories. She's spared no expense for this weekend, and everything's perfect--until it's not.

Each woman who arrives at the party comes with her own birthday well wishes--and her own secret sorrow, which she's determined not to unwrap. But weekends spent with friends have a way of bringing things that have been kept hidden to the surface. Late into the evening, when the stars come out and everyone gets comfortable, one friend opens her heart . . . and then others join in. Allyson Island is like summer camp for 50-year-olds--and, just like at summer camp, it's a place where friendships are strengthened, deep emotions are shared, and hope and healing happen.

A Weekend on Allyson Island is a warm, emotionally resonant novel that celebrates female friendship, vulnerability, and the healing power of shared stories. Susannah B. Lewis crafts an intimate, character-driven narrative centered on Moira Allyson, a wealthy widow who plans an extravagant 50th birthday weekend as much to honor her friends as to distract herself from her own quiet loneliness.

Set against the elegant backdrop of a waterfront mansion near Savannah, the novel quickly moves beyond surface-level luxury to explore the private griefs each woman carries with her to the celebration. Lewis excels at showing the contrast between outward success and inner sorrow, reminding readers that pain does not discriminate by age, status, or circumstance. As the weekend unfolds, guarded conversations give way to honest confession, and long-standing friendships deepen through empathy and understanding.

The strength of the story lies in its emotional authenticity rather than dramatic plot twists. The island gathering feels less like a party and more like a retreat—a safe space where women are finally allowed to be seen, heard, and supported. The metaphor of “summer camp for 50-year-olds” is particularly effective, capturing the blend of nostalgia, laughter, and late-night truth-telling that defines the weekend.

Ultimately, A Weekend on Allyson Island is a comforting, hopeful read for anyone navigating midlife transitions, loss, or change. It affirms that healing often begins when we stop pretending we’re fine and allow friendship to do its quiet, transformative work.

I listened to this as an audiobook, narrated by the author. They usually say that an author should not narrate their book, and at first I thought this was only too true. The narrator (author) had a very strong Southern accent which, at first, grated on my nerves. But then I thought, “this is a Southern story and all the characters are Southern ladies, so go with it”.

After I got used to the narrator’s accent and started to get all the characters straightened out in my mind, I began to enjoy the story. The is a strong thread of religion running through the story, but it is not preachy or overwhelming. It is just the way some Southern people live and believe, and I respect that while not being too religious myself.

As in life, everyone has their secret sorrows and preoccupations and each woman gradually revealed their worries and burdens. All in all, I enjoyed the story. It was well-written, good character development and the story moved at a good pace. Being in my 60s, I could related to these middle-aged women, and I always enjoy stories about female companionship and support. All in all, it is a good, solid female-centered novel.

Weekend on Allyson Island is a warm, engaging novel that invites readers into a reflective and emotionally rich escape. Set against the backdrop of Allyson Island, Susannah B. Lewis crafts a story that feels both intimate and relatable, focusing on relationships, personal growth, and the power of slowing down.

The novel centers on a group of characters brought together for a single weekend, each carrying their own worries, regrets, and unspoken truths. As the short span of time unfolds, Lewis skillfully explores how honest conversations, unexpected connections, and shared experiences can lead to meaningful change. I was able to identify with all of the characters in some way The dynamics in the group felt realistic and I could really relate to that too. I think we all attend the coming together of such groups at some stage and Lewis has encapsulated the experience.

The island setting enhances the story beautifully, providing a sense of isolation that encourages introspection while also offering moments of comfort and charm. I loved (vicariously) visiting Mo's for the weekend.

Lewis’ writing is heartfelt and accessible, with a strong emphasis on emotional authenticity. The characters interactions strike a balance between lighthearted moments and deeper, more thought-provoking themes. Friendship, self-discovery, forgiveness, and the importance of presence are woven naturally into the narrative.

A Weekend on Allyson Island is a thoughtful, feel-good read that reminds how even a brief pause from everyday life can offer clarity and renewal. It's perfect for fans of contemporary fiction that focuses on character-driven storytelling, this novel is an inviting escape with a lasting emotional impression.

A Weekend on Allyson Island tells the story of an eclectic group of authentic women who have very relatable struggles. While gathering to celebrate Moira Allyson’s 50th birthday at the Allyson’s picturesque family home, the women share both breakdowns and breakthroughs as they discover the meaningful and freeing bond of their friendship.

I loved the whole cast of dimensional characters and I appreciated the variety in their personalities, situations, strengths, and struggles. From crippling anxiety to eating disorders, from alcohol overuse to emotional and physical abuse, from hyper-control to debilitating worry, the women represent some really difficult struggles that can be common to many women. The story reveals what it looks like to try and conquer these difficulties apart from Christ and community, but also the beauty and freedom that is ushered in through the forgiveness of Jesus and the love of His people. I just loved seeing the realness of Christ’s power to overcome sin pictured in such an authentic way.

Though all of these themes can sound very heavy, Susannah writes the story with a skillful balance of humor. I also loved all the mouth-watering descriptions of classic southern dishes the women were enjoying during the weekend.

This story centers on a group of women gathering together. Unfortunately, this often results in female gossip which was definitely an element of this book. Though it was authentic, I would have liked to see less. There is a fair amount of alcohol consumed, but it is portrayed for the difficulties it causes and not as a positive thing.

I loved listening to this story read in the author’s own voice. Her smooth southern accent really elevated the experience of the story. As I listened, it felt like I was transported to Georgia and got to be a fly-on-the-wall for this girl’s weekend.

I have enjoyed all of Susannah’s past books, so I was so excited to dive into her newest release. Her books have a unique balance of southern charm, complex characters, & tough situations with just the right amount of humor. This story was no different. If you’re looking for a story with more depth than a rom-com and a beautiful representation of Christian community, this is the one!

⛔️ Content Warning: alcohol abuse, processing grief, loss of spouse, discussion of toxic relationships & physical abuse

Five women come together for a 5oth birthday celebration for one. Some are lifelong friends, others have never met each other, but they each have a reason for attending the party. I loved the interaction of the women and how each of them had their own private issues that they were dealing with. Being a "fly on the wall" to listen to conversations between friends and watching how each one was encouraged and lifted up, but also called out (in love) when needed.
I think every woman who reads the book (especially those in midlife) will be able to see herself in these women and will come away from the book with a greater grace for herself and others. I loved that the faith part was inserted naturally throughout their conversations, but the truths were spoken honestly and from the heart.

I’m from the South, and hearing the author narrate added such an authentic, charming touch to this story. Moira Allyson’s 50th birthday weekend is a perfect mix of glamour, friendship, and heartfelt emotion. While the party is extravagant on the surface, the weekend quickly becomes a journey of self-discovery, honesty, and healing for everyone involved. Each woman brings her own joys and sorrows, and the story beautifully shows how connection and shared vulnerability can transform even the loneliest hearts. Allyson Island is like summer camp for grown-ups—warm, emotional, and utterly satisfying.
