Description

Calling all explorers of God’s great stories! Join Peter, Mary, and their dog, Hank, in a new series of adventures from M. J. Thomas, author of the beloved The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls series, as they follow an ancient map to travel back in time to key moments in Biblical history. The Mystery of the Ancient Map: Book #1 The Brave Queen is the perfect starting point for both new readers and current fans of the Hidden Scrolls books.

Through fast-paced and edge-of-your-seat action, The Mystery of the Ancient Map books teach children Biblical literacy and how to understand and appreciate God and his word through the stories of the Bible. The Brave Queen is the first book in the new Mystery of the Ancient Map series that expands the world of The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls, but it can be thoroughly enjoyed by readers not familiar with Peter, Mary, and Hank’s previous adventures.

Peter and Mary are getting ready for a new school year after a summer of time travelling with Great Uncle Solomon’s hidden scrolls, but life seems very boring after all their adventures. Then they get an invitation to go to Israel where Great Uncle Solomon is getting a Lifetime Achievement Award in Archaeology. During Great Uncle Solomon’s acceptance speech, a mysterious woman slips Peter an ancient map with red Xs marking different locations. When they investigate the map, the kids discover a new hidden scroll that takes them to Persia, back to the time of Queen Esther, where they meet Mordecai, the evil Haman, and Queen Esther, and try to solve the secret of the scroll.

The Brave Queen:

  • Follows the events of Esther: 1-10.
  • Reminds readers that, like Esther, God has a plan for their lives.
  • Is the first book in a chapter book series perfect for emerging readers ages 6-9.
  • Includes illustrations throughout, bringing all the action and adventure to life.
  • Great gift for readers who love The Magic Tree House and I Survived series.

A lovely read that my middle child read on their own, it is great for a 10 year old. A good intro to going to Israel and then a treasure map of ancient Israel is introduced. The children explore the map looking at areas like the Dead Sea and Masada, each area of the map is explained with interesting details and a story woven into it if the children visiting the area as well as the biblical links. The story of Esther is given along with Mordecai. The children learn about leaving things to God and trusting him, they help Esther find her voice and speak for her people.
An interactive book that got my child interested in hearing more and learning about the taste, touch and smell of the Bible as well as the stories.

Cute kids book teaching them some of the history of Queen Esther and the Jewish people under King Xerxes. I read this with my 6 year old and she enjoyed the simpleness of the story and the excitement of the trip to Israel and back into the past. This is not a very in depth look at Esther's story and is more of a surface read but it introduces kids to her character and can allow for deeper conversation. Many parts of the book feel rushed and there's "magic" that brings the kids back in time through the secret scrolls but overall this is a fun adventure for young readers on their own or read to them by parents.

This was a really fun children’s fiction! I love time travel stories in general, but I really appreciated how this one taught kids more about the Bible.
The kids in this story felt like real kids, and I think elementary schoolers will be able to relate to them. They were a little bit impatient at times and argued with each other, but you could tell that they still cared for one another. I really liked how they learned with the reader about the importance of trusting God especially with this story of Esther. Also, Thomas did a great job of showing how God is the hero of the story even though the kids are the main characters.
While this story is a spin off of another series, I was still able to follow what was happening. I think some readers may prefer to read the first book and then this one though. The kids are thrust into the story of Esther as they learn about the importance of trusting God. Thomas did a great job of showing the severity of Esther’s situation in a child appropriate manner. I would definitely recommend this children’s fiction to elementary schoolers! It is a short chapter with some pictures included.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher through Netgalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, a positive review was not required.

This is the perfect book for a young reader! I loved that it had some mystery, some adventure, and a well loved Bible story as the foundation. It felt like a mix between the Magic Treehouse and a SuperBook Episode. I can't wait to read the next one in this series and add it to my list for gifting once it releases. My kiddo will love it!

The Brave Queen is an engaging adventure story that serves as a great introduction for young readers into the Book of Esther. The story references previous books in the series, but can be thoroughly enjoyed as a stand-alone.

This title would be well suited for younger readers, as well as less confident older school-age readers. The story is fast paced and utilizes easy vocabulary so readers are not likely to become frustrated. Additionally, the book employs illustrations that help readers to visualize important moments in the story, but there are not so many that they would be used as a crutch to reading the text.

This is like Magic Tree House but with Bible stories. I love the two books I received ARCs for. My 6-and 9-year old boys also enjoyed these books. I hope to see more from this series! I could see this series being a great edition to our homeschool.

Thank you to NetGallery and Zonderkidz-Books for an advanced copy of this ebook in exchange for my honest review.

What an enjoyable read! The Brave Queen positions Mary, Hank, and Peter in a unique position to experience events from the Bible. Namely, the story follows the trio as they try to solve the scroll and encounter Mordecai and even Queen Esther! It was a brief book that remained respectful to the Biblical story.
