Description
Calling all explorers of God’s great stories! Join Peter, Mary, and their dog, Hank, in a new series of adventures from M. J. Thomas, author of the beloved The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls series, as they follow an ancient map to travel back in time to key moments in Biblical history. The Mystery of the Ancient Map: Book #2 The Big Fish is perfect for both new readers and current fans of the Hidden Scrolls books.
Through fast-paced and edge-of-your-seat action, The Mystery of the Ancient Map books teach children Biblical literacy and how to understand and appreciate God and his word through the stories of the Bible. The Big Fish is the second book in the new Mystery of the Ancient Map series that expands the world of The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls, but it can be thoroughly enjoyed by readers not familiar with Peter, Mary, and Hank’s previous adventures.
Great Uncle Solomon takes Peter, Mary, and Hank on a train trip to investigate a new red X on their ancient map. It leads them to the sea, where they discover a new hidden scroll that takes them back in time, and they stowaway on a ship. When a huge storm comes up, they meet Jonah and end up being swallowed with him by a giant fish! It’s an adventure unlike any other as they journey to Nineveh, encounter the Enemy, and try to solve the secret of the scroll.
The Big Fish:
- Follows the events of Jonah: 1-3.
- Reminds readers that, like Jonah, in times of trouble they can pray to God.
- Is the second book in a chapter book series perfect for emerging readers ages 6-9.
- Includes illustrations throughout, bringing all the action and adventure to life.
- Great gifts for readers who love The Magic Tree House and I Survived series.

This book was a lovely read for my child. This is a book in a series that uses a treasure map of crosses to allow two children to travel in biblical time using hidden scrolls. This book is all, about Jonah and whilst trying to evade the Collector, who want to take the scroll for himself, the children and family travel to the sea where the wind gets up and then onward to Nineveh. The story is well told with the smell of the sea, the strong stormy winds whipping across the surface of the water and creating foamy waves. The children get on the boat and it is all made exciting and drew my child into the story and to understanding more. The children even follow Jonah into the belly of the fish and that was something of a big discussion in our house as to what that would be like!
The Big Fish is the second book in the Mystery of the Ancient Map series. The first book, The Brave Queen focuses on Esther and this one is of course is about Jonah.
In this series, Peter, Mary, and their dog, Hank, follow an ancient map to travel back in time to key moments in Biblical history.
The writing is fast-paced and action packed. Besides an edge of your seat story, the focus is to teach children Biblical literacy and how to understand and appreciate God and his word through the stories of the Bible.
This time, Great Uncle Solomon takes Peter, Mary, and Hank on a train trip to investigate a new red X on their ancient map. It leads them to the sea, where they discover a new hidden scroll that takes them back in time.
They stowaway on a ship, something children should never do, but that’s part of the intrigue for young chapter book readers. The huge storm comes up, where Jonah is found sleeping. This time Peter, Mary, Hank AND Jonah are swallowed by the big fish. Three days later they are spit out which is described pretty disgustingly as it should be. They journey on to Nineveh, encounter the Enemy, ( Satan, who us portrayed quite well) and begin to solve the secret of the scroll.
Be sure to pair this with Jonah: 1-3. You want to ensure children understand the story of Jonah truly happened in history Readers are reminded that like Jonah, in times of trouble, they can pray to God and he always hears us.
Recommended for readers ages 6-9.
Black and white illustrations are scattered through the story adding to the action and adventure.
These stories are much like the hit series entitled The Magic Tree House that bring historical events to life for young readers.
This is like Magic Tree House but with Bible stories. I love the two books I received ARCs for. My 6-and 9-year old boys also enjoyed these books. I hope to see more from this series! I could see this series being a great edition to our homeschool.

In The Big Fish, the second book in the Hidden Scrolls: The Mystery of the Ancient Map series, Peter, Mary, and their loyal pup Hank once again find themselves drawn into a biblical adventure—this time centered around the story of Jonah and the big fish. The series continues its blend of approachable storytelling and faith-based themes, making it a gentle and engaging read for young audiences.
This installment adds color and life to the story of Jonah in a way that feels accessible and inviting for kids. The familiar characters help anchor the narrative, bringing warmth and curiosity to an ancient tale. While the retelling avoids some of the tougher elements of the Jonah story, it creates space for parents and caregivers to go deeper with their children after reading. The result is a thoughtful, family-friendly retelling that encourages conversation about obedience, mercy, and compassion without overwhelming younger readers.
Overall, this book offers a creative, kid-centric exploration of a classic Bible story and stands well on its own as a wholesome adventure with spiritual roots.
