Description
Latin Grammy–nominated singer/songwriter Sonia De Los Santos’s debut picture book is a hopeful and lyrical ode to family, home, and the journeys we make to create them.
Based on Sonia De Los Santos’s popular song “La Golondrina,” this joyful story captures a young girl’s fascination with the migratory swallow that sings in the trees outside her grandmother’s home in Mexico. With dreamlike wistfulness, she speaks to the bird about the long journey northward that it is about to undertake to find food and a new home—much like the one her own father is making, and the one she will someday make too.
La Golondrina captures Sonia De Los Santos’s signature spirit and joy and celebrates love, family, migration, and belonging. Bilingual English–Spanish text is complemented by Teresa Martínez’s vibrant and accessible artwork to create an unforgettable celebration of the journeys that shape our lives and our communities.

this was so stinking cute!!!!! I loved that it was bilingual, and I'm sure the song that accompanies it is gorgeous. The art and poetry were top notch.
An absolutely stunning book with a beautiful message. The illustrations are lovely, colorful and eyes catching very engaging images for children that clearly represent the story. The images also are diverse and represent people of different skin tones as well as buildings and decor from a different culture.
The text is lovely and lyrical. I enjoyed the mixture of Spanish and English and the bilingualism of the book. The analogy and message of a migraine bird being similar to a family moving was beautifully done and child friendly and appropriate.
In this beautifully illustrated (by Teresa Martinez) children's book we follow Sonia María, a little girl in Mexico who enjoys spending time at her grandma's house talking to the golondrinas(swallows) who migrate through her home country. Sonia María dreams of one day going on an adventure like the golondrina. She longs to rejoin her Papa in the U.S. This is a very timely and relevant story for young readers. The story of how the golondrinas migrate throughout North and South America is a great way to start a conversation with younger readers about how some travel from far away places to find what feels like home. The illustrations were so vivid and winsome, they really elevated the story and added to the beauty of the musicality of the story.
highly recommend this one for starting conversations with younger readers. I also recommend for those trying to raise bilingual kiddos, this story is told in English and Spanish!
Thank you to NetGalley and W.W. Norton and Company for the eARC in return for an honest review!
A beautiful book about a girl who loves golondrinas, their songs and their migration paths. The girl compares the migration the golondrina does to her father's path and her own. They all come back home to grandma in the end. This book is based on a song by the same name from the author.
It is a wonderful bilingual book that needs to be read several times (once in English, once in Spanish). Don't forget to "read it" through the illustrations as those tell a beautiful story as well.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Based on the gorgeous Sonia De Los Santos song by the same name, this is a bilingual picture book about a young girl who finds a kindred spirit in a swallow. The girl stays with her abuela while her father and many others migrate to a new and different land, just like her beloved bird. Alongside gorgeous illustrations, the story follows the young girl as she, too, comes to a new land of opportunity, all the while remembering and honoring where she came from.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me with a free eARC in exchange for an honest review.

La Golondrina is enchanting! I found myself reading it a few times through, once in English and then Spanish, and then once to simply enjoy the artwork. It is illustrated with a personal touch that conveys the emotion of the song and the little girl very well. It’s gentle, universal, and full of feeling. I can’t wait to purchase the book to read to my little ones when the time comes! The message is clear and reads well in both languages. La Golondrina will be a favorite dual-language book for sure.
