Description
A gentle, empowering story that helps children understand and talk about grief — and reminds them that healing begins with curiosity and kindness.
Josie loves dinosaurs, digging for fossils, and playing "Lava Monster" with her dad. But when an accident turns her world upside down, a heavy feeling follows her everywhere — a creature she can't seem to escape.
With Grandpa's gentle guidance, Josie learns her monster's name: Griefosaurus. Together, they discover that grief isn't something to hide or chase away. It's something to understand, listen to, and care for — like a friend who needs a little space and kindness.
Through this tender and hopeful story, Griefosaurus helps kids and families:
- Put words to big feelings like sadness, anger, and confusion
- See that grief changes shape but doesn't have to stay scary
- Understand that healing happens when we stay curious and connected
Perfect for parents, educators, school counselors, and therapists supporting children, this picture book opens doors to meaningful conversations about love, loss, and resilience.

Thank you to NetGalley and the National Center for Youth Issues for an early digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely adored this book and I wish that they had this book (or more books just like this one, back when I was a kid). I think that the author did an amazing job with discussing grief and how it can manifest in our daily lives in a way that children of all ages will be able to understand.
I also think that the art style for this book was absolutely gorgeous and the Griefosaurus character designs were all perfection. (Slight spoiler: but I also really enjoyed how each Griefosaurus was different and how each of them reflected the character that they were there for).
Overall, this book was such a great read and I highly recommend this book not only for children, but for anyone who has dealt with grief at any point in their lives. This book really moved me and I hope it does the same for you! :)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️😭
Oh my. I pre-read this one before showing my littles. Our son passed away last year and I am always looking for books to help my daughter understand more about her grief and what it can look like, what it doesn’t have to look like, etc. I loved that the dinosaurs helped connect with her as something she recognizes and loves. Grief can feel like a monster and i loved how Josie started with being unable to identify her feelings because that is truly what it’s like for kids. They don’t necessarily know how to process but know is there. My favorite part was how grief doesn’t need to go away for her, it just shows how much she loved someone!!!!! I was crying reading this tbh. It definitely helped my daughter in being able to keep talking about her feelings.
Such a beautiful and meaningful read. I shared this with my grandkids after we recently lost a family member, and it really helped open up those first conversations about grief.
It’s well written, the illustrations are so thoughtfully done, and the message is powerful but gentle for little ones.
5 stars — truly well done.
Don't mind me just sobbing while I read this book.
What a great way to talk to children about grief. I loved the illustrations, the explanations, and the relatability of this story. Overall it was lovely.
It is one I will absolutely be requesting my libraries to order. I also fully intend on sharing it with friends I know that have their own griefosaurus's in their own lives.

What a wonderful story. I don't usually review children's books, but my family has recently experienced several losses, so I imagined talking to my kids about their grief with this story. I love that it suggests how to face, feel, and include grief instead of hiding from it and trying to push it away. Adults could benefit from this approach as well!
