Description

Wally Fresh, a young layabout living in Brooklyn, has hit a rough patch recently. After the current economic fallout left Wally out of work, he has been struggling to pay his rent and get his life back in order. As a result, he has taken on a new roommate, Barry (a spirit animal from the Spirit World). Together with their next-door neighbor with a deadly past, Valerie, the three now get into just about any trouble they can find.
Cupid’s Arrow finds Wally attempting to relieve his romantic woes by turning to the world of internet dating. He quickly finds the woman who might just be “The One.” However, Valerie has her suspicions. She warns Barry that a serial killer is on the loose, a deadly beauty targeting men in the tri-state area through online dating. Afraid that Wally might be next, Valerie and Barry race against time as they try to solve the mystery of the Marmalade Mangler.

It takes its time to show its qualities, but eventually this first issue gives itself a raison d'etre – a totally OTT fight scene with the lead character's friends' well-meaning intentions to save him from a lethal Internet hook-up. Before then you don't really know why the guy is living with a spirit beaver and a punky junky, or why we should be interested. Give us a little bravura (if confusingly drawn) action and a lot of cojones in the script and we're satisfied, though – and probably on for the other three parts.

Weird as frak, but interesting. The arc I received was just sketches, so I'm sure it would be more entertaining in colour. Major gender problems, but I'm going to give the series one more issue before letting that piss me off enough to stop. I like the plot, and I love the craziness of the beaver and his girl-y going all kinds of cray in Wally's defense.
