Description
Join Kayla, Mommy, and Granny as they get ready for Carnival, the biggest party of the year!
It’s Carnival day, and Kayla is SO excited! She helps Granny cook, and she waits patiently as Mommy puts colorful beads in her hair. But when Kayla gets dressed in her glittery, colorful costume and starts to dance around the house, she accidentally rips the material. Mommy and Granny try to fix it, but it’s still not quite right. At the celebration, Kayla asks for help from the other mas bands (celebrants in elaborate costumes). This colorful, inspiring celebration of carnival includes back matter on carnival celebrations in different parts of the world.
A joyful celebration of community, courage, ancestry, and the most vibrant event of the year! With back matter introducing traditional holiday celebrations all around the world.

A joyous, vibrant, and heartfelt celebration of Carnival and the power that comes from working together! Kayla can't wait to dance with her team for the judges at Carnival. But when her beautiful outfit accidentally rips, the stress begins: how can she fix it in time? What will happen if she can't?
This is a great introduction to Carnival and an awesome way to show the impact that helping others can have in a community. The illustrations are adorably engaging and vivid! Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me with a free eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Carnival Queen by Donet Williams-Harry and illustrated by Amelie-Anne Calmo
The illustrations in this book are sure to delight any child as it is colorful and vibrant.
This is the story of Kayla who is so excited to go to Carnival in her pretty dress and beaded hair. But while twirling and dancing she rips the dress. Her family tries to fix it but it is not as good as new. Kayla goes to the Carnival anyway and finds out that her community can band together and help.
I like that the book goes into what the Carnival is and some of the traditions. Traditions and celebrations are important to pass down to children.
I recommend this book for story time and family libraries.

Kayla and her family are preparing for Carnival by cooking traditional foods and changing into their holiday clothing.
While practicing her dance for the mas band performance, her costume becomes ripped, and her confidence deflates. Not to worry, though, because the community comes together to repair her dress, and it ends up even better! With encouragement from her family, Kayla finds her footing again and dances her heart out to the soca music.
Community is powerful. When everyone steps up to help each other out, the result is more amazing than anything done alone. Different points of view, styles, talents, and beliefs make the world a beautiful place. This book shows that there is still good in the world, people lifting each other up, and using teamwork to reach a common goal. Everyone deserves to shine.
