Perfect for small babies and bigger builders alike, Home Builder Hazel follows the basic construction process from beginning to end in rhyming detail. Hazel is strong, smart, and a great problem solver- something all young minds should aspire to be! I loved the use of specific, but not overwhelming, vocabulary and inclusion of both various tools and sounds (onomatopoeia!) from the job site.

At the end of the book, there's an information page for bigger kids with fun facts and a glossary!

Home Builder Hazel is a warm, engaging picture book that introduces young readers to the many people, skills, and steps involved in building a home. Through Hazel’s leadership and the teamwork of her construction crew, children learn how a house comes together while seeing problem-solving, perseverance, and collaboration in action.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is how naturally it handles representation. Hazel is a capable construction supervisor from the very first page, and her role is never treated as unusual or turned into the lesson itself. Instead, the story focuses on the work, the crew, and the shared goal of creating a home for a family. The illustrations do much more than accompany the text—they help explain the construction process, bring the job site to life, and frequently carry the story forward in ways that will keep young readers engaged.

While the text is more substantial than many picture books for this age range, I viewed that as a reflection of its purpose rather than a weakness. This shines brightest as an adult-led read-aloud for families, classrooms, and libraries, where children can ask questions and explore each stage of construction alongside the illustrations. The informative back matter, glossary, and additional construction facts make it an even stronger resource for curious kids.

If you’re looking for a picture book that celebrates teamwork, introduces STEM and construction concepts in an approachable way, and features a confident female leader without making that the entire story, Home Builder Hazel is an excellent choice.

Recommended for: Families, preschool through early elementary classrooms, libraries, and any child fascinated by trucks, tools, building, or how things work.

This informative, girl-friendly children's book is perfect for teaching little ones what it takes to build a house, and that anyone can do it, regardless of gender. The author and illustrator show the reader what teamwork looks like, how mistakes can happen but they can be overcome, and that doing a good job takes time and dedication. There is a helpful glossary at the end of the book for unfamiliar terms, along with a description of what it takes to work in construction. I highly recommend this book for little ones!

I loved this book so much! The artwork was beautiful. The story itself was sooo well written. I was not expecting the rhyming pattern and i loved it. Definitely one to add to the library.
