Description
A runaway bestseller in Japan, The Neverending Book is both a standout illustrated fable and a love letter to books.
An aged, near-blind, book-loving king sends two of his subjects out into the world to learn about unusual and magical books. One year later, they return to tell the whimsical, tender, and touching stories they’ve learned.
Among them are: a book that runs faster than a cheetah, a pair of books that are identical twins, a diary shared by two children with painful secrets, a photo album left by a dying father for when his daughter gets married, and the most romantic story in the world . . .
From the comically irreverent to the heartrending to the heartwarming, The Neverending Book delves into all that a book can be, forming an enchanting compendium that reveals the ways in which we interact with books and the importance they hold in our hearts. Imaginative and playful, The Neverending Book is an unforgettable love letter to literature.

A nostalgic and heartwarming mix of graphic novel and book, written about books. I loved the stories within stories within stories, and found myself captivated even at these quite simple tales. The story of the two friends and their diary was by far my favorite, and I hope one day Haru gets to read the story of how her friend never forgot about her.
Thank you W.W. Norton & Company and NetGalley for the arc.

This is a short, charming read that takes you on a playful and imaginative tour through all kinds of books. Some of the books we meet are dangerous, some are sad, and some get only a moment while others have more to say. The author introduces them with a repeated “this one book…” style that makes each one feel like its own little story.
The story with Haru and Shin'ichi starts with a light, playful energy in their drawing rivalry. The shared diary then takes things into a more serious place once her entries start hinting that something else is happening in her life. When she disappears from the diary, he keeps making entries, which creates a sadness that sits apart from the rest of the story.
The ending shifts the perspective on the whole journey and ties it all together.
