Description
A powerful lesson in the rewards of nurturing nature together. (Picture book. 5-9) - Kirkus Reviews
Baori lives in a village in the Maowusu Desert. Very little grows there, and so young people often move away. When Baori hears that the land wasn’t always this dry and that there used to be lots of trees and plants, she wants to do something: she wants to make the desert smaller and the green land bigger. She convinces her neighbors to work together . . .
An inspiring story based on true events about persevering and living in nature. For children ages 5 years and up.

A powerful lesson in the rewards of nurturing nature together. (Picture book. 5-9) - Kirkus Reviews
This inspiring environmental story, based on true events, shows how ordinary people can have a significant impact on their surroundings through perseverance. Full-bleed paintings capture the colors of the changing landscapes, dramatically portraying the vast hills of sand, the multiple planting attempts, and eventually a successful village nestled on green, rolling land. — Lucinda Whitehurst, Booklist

What a heartwarming story full of so much hope! I really loved the feeling of this book, how Baori continued to try new things until she was successful. It took time and perseverance....and a whole lot of teamwork, but it all worked out in the end. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful! I read that this was a true story in the description, but I needed to know more, so I did some googling. This story almost seems impossible, but it's true and amazing. I could see reading this book and having my students wonder and ask questions. Then we could link this book to our study on erosion and how the earth changes. I will be purchasing this book for my classroom library. It really is so beautiful and such a strong message of keeping hope alive. Even after so many disappointments and the odds seeming impossible - one person really can make a difference!
