This was such a cute children's book. It showed how people are different and might be judged because of it but that everyone can fit in without changing who they are.
Would be a great book to read to your kids :)

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC of this adorable book!

My daughter and I read this together, and she really enjoyed the rhyming and flow of the story. The illustrations are very cute - we read this through the kindle app on my phone so we were able to zoom in on the pictures (my daughter was trying to guess the ice cream flavours in each scoop made by the crocodile named Elvis).

Initially the ringleader of the circus (a penguin named Sydney) kept the crocodiles and other scaled/spiked animals behind the scenes, popping popcorn, running the lights, etc. - and wouldn’t allow them to be in the actual show. Of course our crocodile hero, Elvis, changes Sydney’s view on this by the end of the book.

Sydney favoured fluffy coats
And plumage on parade.
But anyone with scales or spikes,
Was kept well in the shade

”I’ll stay for one more show”, said Croc
“But you must change your ways -
Choose your stars on talent, Sid.
That should be how it stays”

I was given the opportunity to read and review an ARC from Netgalley.

As a teacher-librarian at a public school that has all reading levels --from emerging readers to university bound students--I am constantly looking for appropriate content that will interest my readers. I am especially interested in children’s books that have a moral and are visually engaging. This book is a great example of that. I like how Elvis, the crocodile main character, handles his disappointments, but does not give up. I like how his family helps him deal with the disappointment. I also like that the penguin ringleader, Sydney, changes his mind and becomes more inclusive.

I plan to purchase this for my library collection.

What a fun little book with a great "tail" of how how important it is to not only be true to yourself but also to give people chances based on merit and not presumptions.

Thank you so much to Netgalley, Faber & Faber Children's and the author for giving me the opportunity to read this as an arc!

The Ice Cream Crocodile is Elvis' story, a crocodile who dreams to perform fro the circus is works for. Elvis he is really talented, but Sydney, the ringmaster, has a rule. "No spikes or scales on stage".

This was a wonderful story, heartwarming and with important messages. Elvis shows the reader you should never stop dreaming, even if things don't go as you want, even if people get in the way and try to stop you. But also, Elvis shows that the difference between one or another shouldn't be a reason to judge or discriminate others.

The illustrations were really cute, I loved all the ice cream we got to see thanks to Elvis' number.

Don't forget to let you stardust shine!

The Ice Cream Crocodile is a delightful story about a talented crocodile, Elvis, who works for a circus act and yearns to be part of the show and secretly trains to learn new tricks. Unfortunately, crocodiles aren’t allowed to be part of the act. When Elvis finally gets his big break, he’s disheartened to learn it’s as an ice cream seller and not a trapeze artist. However, with his newfound talents, Elvis proves himself and is given a chance. The story has a message of hope, dedication and inclusion. The illustrations are high quality, colourful and full of movement and whimsey. This book would be a great addition for any children’s collection.

The book teaches children about the importance of inclusion through Elvis the crocodile, who wants to perform at the circus but is not allowed to because he’s a crocodile. He comes up with an idea of doing tricks while serving ice cream, in order to show the circus leader, who’s a penguin, that he would make a good performer. In the end everyone is allowed to preform thanks to Elvis’ clever thinking. This book would make a great read-aloud for classrooms and families alike, and I especially loved the author’s rhyming style throughout the story. Some other things to look forward to in this book: the beautiful illustrations on every page, hidden details for kids to spot, a few French words, and a tiny bit of counting. Overall this is a highly engaging book great for read alouds, sure to delight readers young and old.
