Description

The boy's grandfather had long told him about the barred owl that lives in the oldest part of the forest near his home. Determined to meet Owl, the boy visits the forest everyday and gently calls to her. But owls sleep during the day and are awake at night when children are sound asleep. Will the boy ever see Owl from the old forest? This heartfelt story about a child's search for an elusive owl illustrates that when we connect with nature, we are surrounded by love, though we might not always see it.

Told with gentle text and naturalistic artwork, young readers will discover a boy's tender bond with an owl, and they too will learn how to make the barred owl's call, fostering a lifelong love and relationship with nature.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this copy of Owl.

The illustrations are my favourite part of the book - absolutely beautiful artwork! That kept me turning the pages just to see the next pictures! The story is factual until the point of interaction between the boy and owl, which was slightly jarring for me, and the plot could be a little more intriguing to keep your attention. The additional facts about the barred owl at the end were a nice touch.

I thought that this was a lovely book to read!

The story was well written and it was easy to read and understand and I really loved the story.
When I was younger I used to go our birdwatching with my dad and one of the highlights was always looking for Owls in the winter season when we knew they would be hunting the local nature reserve. I now do this with my daughter after losing my dad suddenly.

We have recently moved house to a more rural area and my daughter is delighted that we have a pair of Tawny Owls nesting in the local area and we can hear them calling at night to each other so we were really able to link in with the story.

The illustrations in the book were wonderful and they brought the story to life too.
My daughter enjoyed the book and I loved the message as a parent too.

It is 5 stars from me for this one - very highly recommended!

You should have seen the look on my 9-year-old's face while I was reading this to him-- mouth slightly open in anticipation. I enjoyed that facial expression a lot. It's rare to find a book that successfully competes with the other things a nine-year-old wants to be doing. I thought the pictures of barred owls in the book were very good. I'd give the non-owl pictures 4 stars out of 5.

The watercolor pictures were nice. The story was cute. I liked that there was information at the back about the owls.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this eARC.

Being from the UK I had never heard of a barred owl before and was grateful for the facts that were in addition to this story.

The illustrations were lovely and really added to the story, almost becoming part of the story itself.

The story was also lovely! I can imagine youngsters trying to explain to the person who is reading to them all about how owls are nocturnal and that’s why they weren’t meeting up. With repeated retellings the noises would also be repeated and enjoyed by the children I’m quite sure!

This book was a short story about the magic of connecting with owls. It included a few facts, but mostly was a fanciful story about a boy trying unsuccessfully to see an owl. They ended up connecting, but not in person.

Wow what a story! This gave me all the nostalgia feels thats I remember growing up in the 90s/00s from the library books I use to check out. The illustrations were gorgeous as well! My daughter is 2 and she was glued to the story and kept wondering if we were going to meet the Owl then screamed Owl every time we saw it. This will for sure be on our rotation of books. We can't wait to read it again tonight!

Owl transports it's readers right into the cold woods and my kids and I were there for it! Owl tells the story of a sweet little boy searching the woods in hopes of meeting an elusive Owl. The illustrations beautifully depict the woods around the boys home, the animals, and even a few little surprises. My children especially loved learning the Owl call (they are still calling out randomly as they play). It also left plenty of discussion open for us to talk about nocturnal animals, animal habitats, and hiking safety.
This book would be great for lessons on any of those topics. It would also be great for nature based or outdoor learning programs.
