Description
"Chris Vanjonack's Out of Body is its own singularity. A dazzling collection where characters aren’t bound to a single story, let alone a single universe. Teeming with haunts and heartbreak, this book will leave you breathless." — Gus Moreno, author of This Thing Between Us
A wildly inventive collection of interconnected speculative stories—spanning the multiverse, demonic attachment, and life after death—from an electrifying new voice in fiction.
An aimless ghost haunts his ex-girlfriend for evidence that she’s actually upset about his death.
A group of teens discovers a machine that purports to predict the best day of its users’ lives.
A young woman is horrified to discover that an aggressive stranger she met on a night of bar-hopping now manifests in every photo that is taken of her.
A drunken posse descends into the woods in search of clowns that have been terrorizing their small town.
Chris Vanjonack’s fiction is haunted not only by specters of death, but by the elusive questions of life, and above all, the wonder and horror of the infinite. Uncanny, surreal, and infectiously clever, the stories in this linked collection contain horrors great and small, fueled as much by the fantastic as by longing, dread, and all-too-human frailties.
Morbidly funny and brilliantly observed, Out of Body is an atmospheric, dead original feast for the senses.

Thank you to NetGalley for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This collection of short stories is not for the faint of heart. Ranging from love to loss and everything in between, each story was engaging and beautifully poetic. I could see myself in the main characters, and really enjoyed experiencing life with them, even with all of the quirky additives.
Honestly this book feels really jumbled and discordant until you get into it, and realize that the overlapping theme is life and attempting to make different choices, different outcomes that might have led you to being your happiest version.
It was hard to choose my favorite quotes but below I have compiled a list that I think best envelop the overlapping themes:
"How can you be so sure that nothing happens when we die? That there are no such things as soulmates?"
"I am not my worst impulses."
"Sometimes I go days without speaking to anyone. Sometimes I blink and I don't know where I am."
"Drugs and poetry have this in common: they alter what you pay attention to."
"Your life began right here in this hospital room, but there's lots of ways it might have ended."
"Believing in something that you know will bring about great pain--isnt that all love is? Isn't that all life is?"
I viscerally loved Elizabeth, every version of her, and the ending made me cry and want to call my mom. I will recommend for anyone, and looking forward to a reread in the future.
I loved the alternate reality premise these collections short story gave off! It was weird but in such a cool way!
I loved the haunting each story had, there was dread, grief, sadness, feeling like you’re going out of your mind. All of these stories were particularly crafted and memorable!

All stunners. But when you reference the film Heat in the first story and 3 of my favorite bands in the next, you might has well have made these stories in a lab for me. Reminiscent of some of the genre bending from ten to a dozen years ago that got popular, but executed on a very high level.
