Description

From award-winning author Cadwell Turnbull comes a brilliant collection of short stories, including old favorites and brand-new adventures.

Eighteen stories. Unseen places that lie just within, beneath, beyond our reality.

A father and daughter traverse postapocalyptic America seeking safe haven and the truth about why the world ended. Three siblings write intimate letters as their society slips ever deeper into dystopia.

On an island where locals use cooperative AI to survive hurricanes, a journalist returns home to cover their story and reconnect with her past. A wayward god sets out to find the source of all gods. But can they survive to tell the tale?

After a whimsical attempt to teleport proves successful, a couple finds that their conflicting feelings about the event are threatening their marriage. In a world where multiple souls can inhabit the same body, a recovering addict confronts his family about a terrible secret.

A monster who lives on human blood finds her undoing in the loneliness she carries within her heart.

In his debut collection, acclaimed novelist Cadwell Turnbull takes readers across an omniverse of monsters, gods, and people, all trying to make peace with the parts of themselves they don’t want others to see. Until they are forced to face all their hidden places.

I was mesmerized by this collection of eighteen speculative stories. Moving from post-apocalyptic safe havens to cooperative AI island societies, Turnbull explores the margins of our reality with an incredible amount of emotional depth and striking imagination.

An excellent collection of Cadwell Turnbull's fiction, this anthology showcases his talents and fresh approach to science fiction. His work, at times, especially in "Soul Jars," reminds me of Octavia Butler. Impressive work!

As an award-winning author (known in part for his horror novels), Turnbull is an unsurprisingly talented short fiction writer. Initially, I had worried that this collection would lean a little too deeply into horror for my taste, but the first story, "Wandering Devil" (which does have horror leanings), is weirder than it is scary, and the second, "Mediation," is a tale of deep grief, where help healing is found in a very unlikely technology. (It is, perhaps, what we could hope for as the best incarnation of AI.) The collection mixes previously published and original stories, so it's a great introduction to Turnbull's work for newcomers, as well as a collection for fans who have read some of these tales before.
