Description

Adventures and mysteries await a young lop-eared rabbit when he accidentally falls through a hole in an old white fence.

With no way back to his shady, comfortable yard, Montgomery sets out to explore the world beyond. Along the way, he meets a field rabbit named Bentley, and the two are off in search of a legendary raspberry patch. Their mission is a treacherous one, and Montgomery will come face-to-face with predators he's never known before-coyotes, hawks, and even a rattlesnake! But the two rabbits find that by helping each other, and by accepting the help of a few new friends, they just might reach their treasure: a patch of juicy red raspberries!

Kirkus Reviews on Montgomery Rabbit:

“A debut children’s book that features an inquisitive animal and his colorful circle of friends … Little’s quaint tale, augmented by Wenzel’s naturalistic paintings, calls to mind the exploits of Peter Rabbit and Winnie-the-Pooh.”

“Montgomery and his friends speak to one another and express human emotions, they look and behave like real , reach-out-and-pet animals. {Little] enlivens the sights, sounds, and scents of the lovely rural setting captured by Wenzel’s gorgeous, masterly illustrations … every character adds charm.”

A highly entertaining story for animal lovers and adventurists which would appeal most to age 6-11. As I read this I recalled my own memories of reading and enjoying Watership Down as a child. The story focusses on Montgomery, pet rabbit of the sandy haired girl and his adventures after he heads through the fence of his home, fascinated by the meadow beyond. Once outside he is befriended by Bentley, a wild rabbit and they head off together to look for the elusive raspberry patch. Along the way they meet a variety of animals, some friendly, some not; and have a close call with a rattlesnake and a bird of prey. The story has a lovely but emotional ending exploring saying farewell to old lives and moving on. The ending also provided a perfect starting point for a series of adventures between Bentley and Montgomery which I am sure would go down well with younger readers. I read the story over two sittings to a small group of girls and boys aged 7-11. They loved the illustrations and were excited by the various animals included in the adventure, as they were so different from what we have in our English wildlife stories. One 11 year old boy spends most of his time normally reading football stories and I was pleased and surprised when his Mum came to tell me after the first reading how much her son had enjoyed it and was looking forward to hearing the conclusion. This was obvious when he turned up for the conclusion bringing along another friend advising me, 'I knew he would enjoy it as much as me so we've got an extra listener this week!'

I don’t know of a better accolade for a book then to tell other readers that my preschool grandson couldn’t wait to hear more of Montgomery Rabbit by Sandy Little. This short chapter book caught his interest and held it. While it is not an extremely long chapter book, it is longer than I wanted to read to him in one setting. Still he did not want me to stop so it definitely holds a 5-year old’s attention. Then when he returned to visit, he would quickly ask to hear more of Montgomery’s adventures.

The illustrations are exquisite, pleasing to both young and old. They are the drawing point since the cover caught our eye. However, it is the story itself that kept our interest. Montgomery Rabbit has enough suspense and danger for children without being overly scary. Then there is just the right amount of twist to keep the story from being too predictable. We both found the ending to be bittersweet, wishing for Montgomery not to have to made a choice, but then life is full of choices.

Also like Montgomery Rabbit, our world is a big scary place but full of wonderful surprises too. Don’t be afraid to explore and try new things while making friends along the way; a wonderful lesson learned from Montgomery.

A floppy eared rabbit and a straight eared rabbit meet, become friends and have many adventures together. With all the rabbit tracks in my yard every morning, I imagine this is what is going on under the cover of darkness. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and the story is delightful!
