John Cage is such an innovative musician, and I've been intrigued by him since learning about him in a music appreciation class. I love how the author makes his work accessible to readers of all ages, and illustrates a visual element to the unpredictable musical elements. I learned more about what interested John Cage as a student and as a human, and really enjoyed this picture book biography. I highly recommend this book to schools and libraries.

How does one begin to write about John Cage? Delightful poetry, art, design are all in sync here, coming as close to representing Cage as I can imagine. The book illustrates for kids wide-open possibility and boundless imagination, and includes backmatter for detail, elucidation, sources (“John trusted his audience, rather than telling them how to think and feel…”). I’ll definitely be purchasing this one for my own shelves.
