Godfrey’s Crusade is a gripping and heartfelt epic fantasy that immediately reminded me of the immersive, Nordic‑inspired storytelling found in John Gwynne’s work. Mark Howard builds a world shaped by honor, loyalty, and the weight of destiny, and he does it with a confidence that makes the setting feel both mythic and grounded.

Godfrey is an easy character to root for. He is earnest, brave, and still learning how to balance his ideals with the harsh realities of conflict. His growth throughout the story is one of its strongest elements, and the supporting cast adds depth and emotional resonance. The relationships feel genuine, and the moments of camaraderie and tension are handled with care.

The action scenes are clear and engaging, with a sense of physicality that keeps the stakes high without overwhelming the character work. Howard has a talent for writing battles that feel purposeful and emotionally connected to the larger narrative. The magic and supernatural elements are woven in with restraint, adding texture without overshadowing the human core of the story.

The pacing is steady and satisfying. The plot blends adventure, personal struggle, and rising danger in a way that keeps the pages turning. It feels like the opening chapter of a much larger saga, and the world is rich enough to support that ambition.

Godfrey's Crusade is a quick and pacey epic fantasy, and a solid start to the series. Since the book is so short (for epic fantasy!) and the plot was so fast paced, it was a quick read and kept me engaged the entire time.

The main things that kept this book from being any higher rated for me was the lack of character work and world building. All of our characters were very two dimensional, so I never felt truly invested in what happened to any of them. As for the world building, it was evident from the acknowledgements that the author had put a lot of thought into the world, but failed to actually explain any of it to the reader, instead just throwing place names out and letting the map at the start do the rest of the work (which is an especially unhelpful strategy for an e-book!)

I am excited to continue the series, since finding a fast paced epic fantasy is a rarity, and I'm curious to see what Godfrey does next.

Godfrey’s Crusade by Mark Howard is a refreshing throwback to the roots of heroic fantasy, blending the noble spirit of Arthurian legend with the gritty reality of medieval warfare.

The story follows Godfrey de Bastogne, a young and idealistic knight whose journey into the Northlands to defend a kingdom serves as a gripping coming-of-age tale. What sets this debut apart is Howard’s ability to balance high-stakes action with a protagonist who genuinely strives for honor in a world that often rewards cynicism. I can see it being very popular among the men, due to this.

The narrative moves at a relentless pace, which is fantastic, pulling you through a landscape filled with both traditional fantasy threats, like orcs, and more nuanced political dangers (my favorite). One of the book's greatest strengths lies in its military focus; the battle scenes are choreographed with a clarity and tactical depth that makes the reader feel the weight of every shield wall and the chaos of every charge. Big pet peeve of mine if the fighting makes no sense, so huge point here!

While the worldbuilding introduces familiar elements, Howard presents them with a grounded, matter-of-fact tone that makes the magic and monsters feel like a natural part of the environment.

While the (mild) romance and the final chapters move quite quickly, the sheer momentum of the prose keeps you turning pages. It is a story about duty, leadership, and the high cost of maintaining one's principles when surrounded by internal corruption and external enemies.

This novel offers a satisfying and immersive experience that marks a strong start to The Griffin Legends series, so you will excuse me while I dive right in the second book!
