Description
In a siege, there are no winners.
Mark Howard brings military fantasy to the next level in his second installment is an epic coming-of-age fantasy tale of tactics, war, battles, mythical creatures, sorcery, and magic. As the battle continues to rage in a mysterious world that echoes J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth, the chosen one, Godfrey de Bastogne, must learn that the trials of political leadership in the kingdom require more than courage, duty, and honor.
The imminent threat to Azgald has been thwarted and the prophecy fulfilled. With the crusade’s conclusion at hand, Godfrey is left to defend the strategically important Olso Fortress from dark forces as his soldiers and knights yearn to return home. The young knight is faced with another crucial choice – raise his sword and return to reclaim his birthright, or begin a new life in Azgald with his betrothed, Madeline.
Victory may be at hand, but the battle for survival is just starting.
Danger still lurks beyond the castle walls. The High Warlord Alvir has neither forgiven nor forgotten his bitter defeat at Godfrey’s hands. With wounds serving as constant reminders of the humiliation at the hands of the crusaders, he decides to settle this once and for all and musters his forces to lay siege to Olso Fortress.
Will Madeline hone her magical abilities or continue to be thwarted by the castle’s new librarian? Can she forgive Godfrey for his failings, or will bitterness spell an end to their relationship before they come to their senses to prevent a traitor from throwing open the gates to the enemy and spelling their doom?

I got into this pretty quickly. It’s easy to follow and keeps things moving, which I liked. There’s always something happening so it never really drags. Just a solid, enjoyable read.

In Godfrey Under Siege, Mark Howard successfully transitions his epic series from the sprawling, introductory adventure of the first book into a much more focused and intense military thriller.
By centering the narrative on the desperate defense of Olso Fortress, the story gains a sense of urgency that keeps the pages turning. The shift from broad world-building to a claustrophobic siege allows for a deeper exploration of Godfrey de Bastogne’s internal conflict. He is no longer just a knight on a mission; he is a leader forced to balance the morale of his homesick men against the tactical necessity of holding the line against High Warlord Alvir’s overwhelming forces.
The military sequences remain the strongest part of the book, as Howard’s writing excels when describing the grit and strategy of medieval-style warfare. The action is easy to follow and grounded in a realism that makes the stakes feel genuine, even when mythical creatures like cyclopes join the fray.
Ultimately, this sequel feels more mature and human than its predecessor. The inclusion of a traitor within the walls adds a layer of suspense that complements the external threat, ensuring the tension never truly lets up. It is a satisfying middle chapter for fans of traditional high fantasy who appreciate a story rooted in duty, sacrifice, and the heavy burden of command.
How long before the next please?! Thank you very much for the arc!
